Re: How to see all exif data in lightroom?
Thanks a bunch, that was the one I was trying to find, but couldn't remember the name. It didn't do what I wanted with regards to exif data, but it pointed me to this plug-in https://johnrellis.com/lightroom/anyfilter.htm which Jeff recommended as being more powerful than his. In the process it pointed me to Exiftool https://exiftool.org/index.html Which I ended up using, and found out that Pentax does not record which version of astrotracer was used on the image. So, I'll need to actually record time and frame numbers at some time comparing the different versions. How to see all exif data in lightroom?
Last week I was experimenting with the different astrotracer modes on my cameras. I expect that the mode is recorded in the exif data. I know that there are programs that will print out all of the exif data based on the file, but it would be very handy to sort the photos, in lightroom, based on this. astro test
I found some dark skies a little less than an hour and a half away. The type 3 astrotracer unequivocally works better than the GPS based. I do wish that it didn't need to do a test frame for every shot. If the camera had an accelerometer and could read focal length it would be able to tell if you changed anything between shots. Anyways, the K3-III with the 70-200 got better shots than the K-1 with the sigma 50-500, even though I just did the type three astro upgrade to the K-1. Very rough benchmark 2013 vs 2019 mac pro
I did a quick, very sloppy, benchmark comparing my old 2013 trashcan mac with my new to me cheese grater 2019. I've got a huge panorama of McWay falls at moonset. It took the trashcan about 7 minutes to process it, and the 2019 2.5-3 minutes to stitch it together. The trashcan was maxed out, so it has the big OWC 2TB SSD and IIRC 12 cores with 64G of memory, but LR no longer supports the GPU. The cheesegrater is 16 cores and 96G of ram. I haven't figured out what to do with the trashcan, I ought to find someone who can make use of it while it's still usable. It hasn't crashed since I blew most of the dust out, so it might have just been overheating. Unfortunately the error reports didn't really say anything helpful like what was going on. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from ret13est -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
mac pro ordered
Long story short, the best bang for the buck I was able to find was a 16 core 2019 mac pro with 2TB SSD and 96GB ram for $1400, it was cometically "class C", class B would have been another $100. They do seem to have a few more left in case anyone else is limping along with 2013 era or older mac hardware. I'll try to get a benchmark comparing against my 2013 mac pro trashcan.
Used mac pro questions
I've been having some issues with my trashcan mac. I'd been hoping to put off replacing it until I could get something much better, but it looks like I need to go for something stopgap. It seems like the biggest bang for the buck right now is in the 2019 mac pros. With all of my backup drives etc. a bunch of external ports seems to be an important issue, and one nice thing about the 2019 mac pros is that I can put in internal SSD cards, or increase the ram if I need. I found some on ebay with 96GB memory and 2TB SSD for about $1400, I think it has a radion 580 gpu. What features make the biggest difference in real world performance on lightroom? Are there any t-bolt 3/usb C dongles that do a much better job of giving me a bunch of USB 3 ports? -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from ret13est -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Return of the prodigal K-3 III
My K-3 III was delivered today after being repaired by Precision. It took just over a month from my sending it in, they had to wait a couple of weeks for a replacement top plate. One might think that if service were their goal, they'd keep a better stock of spare parts on hand. sigh. It seems to work, as does the $75(with shipping)Tamron 18-250 I got to replace the broken Pentax 18-270, which I got to replace the broken 18-250. Sigh, I sent the original 18-250 off for repair just before I ended up getting my K-1, and only did a perfunctory test on it, and didn't notice that it no longer focused at full zoom. When I did eventually notice the problem, Tamron informed me that they no longer worked on that lens, and wouldn't even fix it, even if it was just a factory misadjustment. sigh. I'm going to need to go back and re-RTFM on the K-3III, they've changed so much in the UI since the K-1, I could barely find anything, like turning off the focus beep, or setting it to shoot in raw. For some reason the filesave type is showing as RAW+DNG In any case, it's nice to have it back. There are a lot of aspects of its UI that I've definitely been missing, both when using the K-1 and especially on the OM-5 -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from ret13est -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I've found there to be a tremendous range in both quality and price of K-mount back caps for lenses. I have not found there to be consistent correlation between quality and price though. K-3 repair update
I just heard from Precision, my K-3III has been repaired and shipped, it should arrive back here on Monday. As to the superzoom, I just ordered an 18-250 off of Ebay for about $85 with shipping and tax. Despite the WR of the 18-270 I never really liked it as much as the 18-250 it replaced, and that would have been a lot more. Re: Motherboard upgrade: Seeking advice from all (but it's probably gonna be mostly from Larry)
Yeah, I would expect that a new GPU would give you the most bang for your buck. If you can upgrade the CPU without upgrading your MOBO, that would give a good boost with less risk of finding out that your new mobo doesn't support some bus that one of your old cards needs, or suchlike. It would be very interesting if you could do some sort of benchmark before and after each upgrade. Have lightroom build a 12 frame HDR pano, and then do a denoise on it. Then do the same thing on the same files, each time you upgrade. I suspect that more memory would make more difference without the GPU, since they often have their own memory. > On Jun 18, 2024, at 1:59 PM, Toine wrote: > > Any major brand is ok (MSI, Asus, Asrock). Re: Motherboard upgrade: Seeking advice from all (but it's probably gonna be mostly from Larry)
I wish I could help, but I haven't been keeping up. I've just been buying used mac gear from a friend with a shop in Santa Cruz (Pacific Macs). A couple other people on the list have built up new machines in the past year and would know better than me what to look for. A while back the mobo in my home Linux box fried, I bought a used mobo from a friend, and then it wouldn't boot off the drives I had or something crazy like that. So what I've mostly learned is weird and unexpected things lose compatibility and you're likely to need to replace half your system for more than the cost of just buying a new system. In a related note, I recently put together a RAID NAS with "renewed" drives off Amazon. I'm glad that it's RAID, and second level of backup, because last night one of the drives already crapped out. For primary storage it would probably be worth paying $310/drive rather than $170. > On Jun 18, 2024, at 9:08 AM, Mark Roberts wrote: > > I've been having computer problems that I've traced to the motherboard > (to about 99% certainty) and, as I'm long overdue for an upgrade, I'm > thinking it's time to go for a new motherboard. equipment update, QNAP NAS
I had posted a while back that I had been having issues with my OWC thunderbolt drivebay and was looking to upgrade. A friend offered me a good deal on his QNAP 458a 4-bay NAS. I loaded it up with four 16T WD drives as RAID 5 and 16G of RAM, which gives me something like 43T of storage. I copied my photo files over, pointed lightroom at it rather than the OWC and found all the missing images in my backup and everything catalogs . TLDR; Using it as my primary storage doesn't work. It might be possible to get it to work, but with Macos losing connection to it, the slower speeds and related, it was just too painful. It does seem to work very well as first level backup and gives me a NAS for up here. My old synology 4bay is in Felton as offsite storage of everything up to about a year ago. I also have other drives to use as second and third level backup down here. It would be really nice if it also had a way of connecting to the computer directly as an external drive rather than only a NAS. I'm luke warm on it as a NAS, it has a lot of features that I don't need, and I haven't really spent the time and effort to learn my way around it. It is also quite a few years old, but I think it may have the current UI. By plugging into the OWC via USB 3 rather than TB my computer doesn't crash nearly as often. I had previously solved this problem by disabling something about sleep, but with the latest version of Monterey the problem has returned. Hopefully I won't run out of space on the OWC until I have the resources to replace both it and the trashcan mac I'm using to process photos. The longer I can put that off the more processing power I'll be able to get for my dineros. I may be forced to do something before too long because I'm running up against end of life of LR running on a version of Macos that will run on the trashcan.

I see a couple of options. You could use the PUG as an excuse to grab the K-5 and give it some exercise. I know that the 16-50 doesn't like to be left fallow too long, the K-5 probably prefers to get a bit of exercise now and then too. You could put the PK adapter on the OM-1 and get some shots using Pentax glass. You could start an APUG, alternative PUG. Perhaps one with a simplified user interface that required less moderation, but some sort of password (could be the monthly topic) to keep spammers out. You could just enjoy the photos that other people do post, that were taken with Pentax gear. I kind of feel guilty that I never get around to even looking for something to post in the PUG, even though I often look at it and realize I already have a very topical image in my collection. Is there a list anyplace of all of the historical PUG topics? Status Update K-3 repairs and OT photos
I decided that since the OM-5 works OK for carrying on my bike, I was better off getting the K-3III repaired while I'm in a photographic lull, lest I find something else critical that is wrong when I absolutely need it, and then find out that it'll take weeks or months to get it repaired. So, I sent it to Precision, their estimate is now up to $683, and it turns out that the parts are on back order for a week or two. So, yeah. I've had a few chances to go on bike rides and am becoming more familiar with the OM-5. It really does make me appreciate the Pentax UI. A few years back I commented that when processing photos, comparing my APS Pentax with a friend's full frame Nikon, I could get similar quality with the Pentax, but that the files "felt more brittle". I'm running into the same thing with the OM-5, only more so, it feels like I have very little extra dynamic range to work with. On my bike ride Monday, I found a place of Reche canyon where someone has collected a bunch of old dead tractors and just has them sitting around, and rather than a No Trespassing sign, his signs simply say that if you get hurt, you can't blame him. I had just photographed this yellow tractor when a bright pink "honey bucket" truck was driving past, so I had to grab another shot: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/53755809787/in/album-72177720317430356/ In other news, I needed to upgrade my local storage and a friend offered me a QNAP 435A 4-bay NAS. I bought it, and some refurb/returned 16T drives off Amazon. With RAID 5 it gives me almost 43 TB, which is nice, about twice my current photo library. I'm trying to point my Lightroom Library at it, and I dunno if it is the QNAP, my trashcan mac, or whether using a NAS over a 1G net but while things seem to work, they aren't, as yet, working well. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com. sent from Mirkwood -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

fall down followup
I mentioned that a few weeks ago I helped a woman catch her dog, in the process, with the heavy camera in the handlebar bag the bike fell over. Shortly thereafter I noticed some issues with the lens focusing, but they seemed to correlate with low contrast situations, the camera wouldn't solidly lock focus on mountains through the haze. A couple days later I noticed the smart function dial on the K-3 III was broken. I took the camera and lens to the local repair shop today, I hadn't noticed that the barrel of the lens was actually broken: https://photos.app.goo.gl/rW86kLCAo8vWTRKa9 The estimates were something like $450 for the lens (which I can buy used for half of that), and $700 (even more than precision) for the camera body. Sigh. I think that for now I'll replace the lens with an 18-135, much less expensive, water resistant, smaller, and I think sharper at least within its range. When I have some time, I may try taking the lens apart and doing a kluge fix myself. In any case, if anyone has either an 18-135 or 18-270 they're looking to offload, let me know. I'm also beginning to think that I should just pony up the dineros and send the K-3 III to precision in case there is anything else I missed.

Re: OT. OM-5 first impressions
Another weird thing about the camera I noticed on my hike is that if you're shooting in "non-silent" mode, it doesn't just make the shutter sound with a speaker, there's some haptic bump to the camera. I guess if what you care about is whether it feels like a film camera that's nice, if however you care about image sharpness, then something that bumps the camera around while you're taking photos can't be good. > On May 13, 2024, at 3:57 PM, supera1000 wrote: > > I'd be interested in your opinion if you use the hand-held hi res mode. If you like the OM-1, then I suspect the OM-5 would be just fine for you. I also suspect that a lot of things that take the shine off for me aren’t things that come up for you as often. My shooting needs are generally very different from yours. If you don’t do a lot of bracketing of raw files, then my complaints there are totally irrelevant, and even so may not be something that bothers you. > > I'll be interested to see how you feel about it after a week or two. This afternoon/evening we bopped by the Getty to play with cameras. As things got darker I ended up needing to lean on the ISO a bit harder, it’ll be interesting to see how the images turn out. On a quick look on my laptop, they seem to be usable at 6400. I was shooting with the 25/0.95 I bought from Boris and focus peaking went away in Manual Focus mode. I put one of the autofocus lenses on, and focus peaking worked fine. So, for some reason, manual focus assist does not work on manual focus only lenses. As we were leaving, I saw someone else waiting for the tram with a small retro looking camera, thinking that it might be another Oly I took a closer look, it was a Pentax MX! I did tell him about PDML, he found the camera in his dad’s attic and is interested in learning more about photography in general and the camera in particular. > -- > %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List > To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow > the directions.

OT. OM-5 first impressions
After the weight of my new (13 months) K3III in my handlebar bag caused my bike to fall over and but the Smart Function knob, I looked into OM-5s again. The price had dropped below my pain point, and since thanks to online shopping there aren’t any convenient camera stores to look at them, I bought on on Amazon, and if I don’t like it I’ll feel no guilt over returning it. My one word review: Adequate My basic review of the Lumix GH3 was that I loved the size, was unimpressed by the sensor/image quality and hated the UI. The OM-5 is the same size, seems to have a substantially better sensor, and the UI is better but really makes me appreciate my Pentax cameras. I would not want one as my primary camera, but for something light and convenient to carry, if not use, it’ll work. One example of something that I do on my pentax bodies that I can’t quite do on the OM 5 is my nominal shooting modes are two stop bracketing, either nominal and -2, or three stops shot in order of -2, nominal and +2. First of all, with the OM, I get at most one stop per frame, it also always shoots nominal first. Another difference is that with the Pentax, one press of the shutter shoots all of the bracket frames at once. In daylight, the EVF, frankly, looks like shit. It is little better than giving me the shape of the objects in the frame. I recognize that there are advantages of EVF, particularly in low light, for manual focusing, focus peaking is nice to have, and other info, but for the experience of photography, not ready for prime, or even zoom, time. Also the camera’s biggest strength is also a weakness, the small size makes it awkward to shoot with, even with my tiny hands. Battery life seems mediocre, I’m used to running on Pentax batteries for hours, and this seems to be running low fairly quickly, but batteries are light and can be bought cheaply.

The good news is that the focusing trouble might have just been my finger blocking the manual focus ring at the end of the lens. The bad news is that no good deed goes unpunished. On my ride a woman was having trouble catching her dog, so I rode past where the dog was, parked my bike, and it promptly fell over. The smart function knob on my K-3 III broke off, and what remains no longer turns. About two months after the warranty expired. I can't tell whether this is a case of Ricoh cluelessly trying to be cool, my being clueless at what actually is cool, or both. There is a lot to be said in favor of the not just being a 'me too' company and trying new things. I personally would prefer a K-1 III, and I'd also prefer a UI that put less effort into being a large heavy expensive point and shoot, and more into making it easier to get the best possible raw file. minor shitstorm
I've been dealing all weekend with not being able to upload a picture to flickr. It turns out that it is only the latest version that won't upload, and is some sort of pathological interaction between lightroom and flickr, such that the jpeg lightroom produces won't even upload. FWIW, it's an old HDR panorama that I just reprocessed using the much more capable latest version of lightroom: https://photos.app.goo.gl/V4gw9KhEzr284AJd8 I had been getting some feedback on processing it from my photo email list. While I was out at the milonga last night I got an email from flickr customer support about that, and also a text from my landlord that he had replaced my thermostat (as I had asked) but didn't have batteries and would return. I told Bing, no problem, I had batteries and could do it myself. So, of course things didn't just work. At least not until I dropped it on the floor, and also fiddled with the batteries and scraped the connector pins. Not a critical problem, but a pain in the but after 10PM when I wanted to get ready for bed. After that, I went into the office to try to debug the flickr problem, and also send a file off to bay photo to get a print made. While I was dealing with that I got a text from Zab of water in the glasses cupboard in Felton. We had had some minor issues with water coming in from the outside roof, and running down the inside roof (Santa Cruz mountains house) and coming out over the outside stairs. Now water was coming into the house. That is a problem that I couldn't just postpone dealing with. I finally got all of those issues sufficiently dealt with that I could go to bed, much later than I intended, and after much searching etc. realized that I had left my tablet at the diner after lunch. I suspect that when they cleaned up while I was in the loo, they thought I left and had just put it under the counter. I was able to get it back today at lunch, but it was just another item on the pile of peeves last night. I'll add to that the peeve that this is the second time my tablet has been left at a restaurant, and nobody noticed the sticker on the back with my name and phone number. I've spent all day dealing with the roof leak from 400 miles away, it could possibly just be duff that had piled up behind the skylight. I'll find out later I suppose. I really don't need shit like this while on a big crunch at work.

Re: Another lightroom redo
Interesting. Thank you people. I had felt that in general the first version was a bit "over spiced". I'm trying to find the right balance between making the image pop, and overdoing it. If you look at other photos in the collection, there is a lot of light pollution close to the horizon, and when saturation and vibrance are dialed up a lot of swatches of green and magenta noise in the sky in general. The new version of lightroom does make it easier for me to duplicate and modify masks, so when I get a chance, I can try a version with more saturation, contrast and clarity in the milky way. Is there consensus that I should also bring up the exposure on the foreground? I did create a mask for the snow on mount Shasta, which I had dialed down a bit from the previous print. Another lightroom redo
I decided to have a go at another one of my photos, trying to take advantage of new features in lightroom. It is an HDR panorama (at 15 and 20 seconds). For the new version I did a lightroom noise reduction of each of the frames before doing an HDR pano stitch. Sometimes my sense of humor amuses me https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/53521668513/in/album-72177720314703860/ For folks that like to poke around in the whole album, I rode my bike up Mt Rubideaux today, basically looking for a decent hill to ride. It does provide a good view of the area so I took a bunch of photos just for reference as I learn the local area. Some of those didn't totally suck, so I threw them into the album from both camera and phone. I found it interesting to compare the phone JPEGs with the phone DNGs, processed in Lightroom. After last week's storms, there's a fair bit of snow on nearby mountains making them rather picturesque. https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/53521740123/in/album-72177720314703860/ This place must have been quite pretty 60 years ago before it got all built up. Thanks Alan. There aren't a lot of places for both dinner and dancing, they're done consecutively these days. I'm very happy with the lens. I got it more for photographing musicians, where I always want a bit more reach and a bit more speed. For these I could have used my 77, especially since I had the 85 stopped down to 2.2, but it was fun to play with it. Most of my shooting lately has been with the K-3II. It's a lot easier to carry on bike rides, and it works well with the 18-270. It was interesting to compare things like focus speed, buffer speed, and focusing with the joystick vs the toggles. While we're on the subject of making use of sensors ...
One of the things I wish that lightroom could do is make use of the accelerometer data to level the images in post processing. Yeah, it works pretty well when there's a visible horizon just using the image, but the accelerometers would get it so much faster. In a similar vein, they'd also be really helpful for stitching panoramas, particularly with compass data as well.
