Because VueScan is a free trial download (www.hamrick.com) you might want to at least try it to see if it works. With the door shut, turn it on and then start up Vuescan. Vuescan will initialize the scanner and then be ready for use. After initialization you can open the door and load your film. OK, I just tried running the Minolta software scanning utility and twain driver from Picture Window. Both ran fine. Are you sure that the USB driver was loaded properly? Re: Lens fungus questions..
Hello, I was in Brazil last january and found a very old 70-300 F4.5-5.6 lens I used to have a long time ago. I stopped using this lens because it is a U42 and at that time I didn't have an adapter to K-mount. So, I found the lens and it was completely full of fungus. So I gave up the lens and my brother started playing around with it and one of the things he tried to kill the fungus was: First he put the lens in the fridge and fungus got worse. Than he tried the microwave and fungus completely disappeared (by eye, at least). As I was coming back to USA I didn't have time to test if the optics is still good. I am waiting to come back next summer and see if the lens is still ok. Re: Is the New LX Going to Be a Digital Camera
It is amazing how many comparisons is made from film to digital. One question I make myself many times is how do we define the amount of data the regular film has? In the digital world it is simple because the information is sampled (bits). So, we know exactly the amount of data the ccd generates. Say a 6 Mpixel camera that can do 24 bits of color per pixel has about 6M * 24 bits = 6M *8bytes ~ 48MB of data/photo in raw format. And about film? how do we define it? Answer: it is near impossible. Why? because it is not digital, it is statistical. How many grains do we have on a iso 100 film? It could vary from frame to frame. The density could vary in different positions of the same frame. I read once that a typical film has about 17M grains/layer on it. If a film has only three color layers with 17M grains on each, it is about 17M * 3layers ~ 51 M bits (each grain is only one bit, exposed or not). In this case, it is about 6.3 Mbyte equivalent to digital data only. If it is correct, digital have much more data inside one frame. But it does not mean more quality, of course. Because the grains are statistically spread over the film, the result is much more realistic for our eyes. And, I think the color rendition is much better than digital because of dark noise, response curve, etc etc etc. Alex [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 7/25/01 12:49:57 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I'd like to know how you work that one out... But Dr. Digi ought to know! How many MB of data in a small format CCD or CMOS-3? 6? Even interpolated, it only works out to 12 MB or so. Some 1 pass medium format digital backs can do up to 20 MB (raw). In any case, a 24 x 36 negative/slide has gobs more data than a small format CCD/CMOS. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Flash to PZ1-P
Hello guys/girls, I am looking for a replacement of my AF500FTZ flash for my pentax PZ1-P. The flash was dropped and died :( I am considering buying the new sigam EF-500 or EF-500 super. They are cheaper than a new AF500FTZ and have about the same GN. Does anybody use them? The main difference seemed that the super has strobe, second curtain sync, exposure compensation. The questions I have is: 1. Pz1-P has second curtain sync option on body, exposure compensation on body, red-eye reduction on body, etc. If I set one of those options on body, does the flash, even in the case they don't have this feature, work on that mode? If I set, say, a flash compensation of -1EV, will the flash shoot with this configuration, even if they don't have this feature? The same for second curtain sync and red eye. I am always on a look out for pictures in my area now, Chicago area. Anyway, I digress, I have a question. In a book I own, I believe a Kodak book on photograhy, it says to increase up to a couple stops when using a circular polarizer. My question is that I did a little test with and without the circular polarizer on the lens. The meter on the camera did take into consideration when using the circular polarizer on the lens and the meter provided about two more stops vs. when the polarizer was off. I used the same scene to judge this. Later, I also did this with various sites at the show and did the same thing. Now I hope that I did not over exposure when I took a lot of pictures manually over exposing from +.5 to 2 stops. Re: Ewa Marine housing
Thanks for the suggestion. I will look more carefully. BTW, I will attend a scuba diving school this summer... I think I will have some fun... Thanks again Alex Peifer, William [OCDUS] wrote: Alex wrote: I am considering to attend diving school this summer. The first though I had was: I want to take pictures and don't want to spend a lot of money buying underwater gear. I know that ewa marine makes SLR camera housing for underwater photography. They have a generic house that goes up to 60 feet deep for about $150-200 @ BHPhoto. Does anybody used something like this? Is it good enough to house my PZ-1P and a FA28-70 F4? I intend to go no much deep (20-40 feet). So, can I trust this kind of equipment? Hi Alex, Sounds like you'll be having some fun this summer -- good luck! What kind of diving will you be doing mostly? It's been a long time (15 years?) since I've been scuba diving, and my diving has been in Northern California, primarily off sandy beaches and rocky coastlines rather than off of boats. I mention this because it will influence your choice of gear. I always needed something that could withstand hard accidental contact with sharp rocks, sea urchin spines, dorsal spines of fish, and so forth. Thus, flexible housings like those of Ewa Marine would not have been a good choice as they might tear or puncture easily. Another thing to consider is this -- if you put on a pair of neoprene gloves (a must-have in Northern California waters) and a facemask, how well will you be able to manipulate the controls of your camera? I suspect you'd have a hard time pressing the controls and seeing through the viewfinder of your PZ-1P in a flexible Ewa housing. Finally, I always followed the rule of never bringing anything into the water that I'd be upset about leaving there. I lost a small boat motor entering through the surf off Carmel, and a weight belt (and almost a tank and regulator) coming back in through rough surf in Fort Bragg. If an unexpected situation comes up, how bad would you feel about losing a PZ-1P and an FA28-70/4? Yikes!! I'd suggest an alternative for underwater photography. First, you might want to take a look at the Ikelite line of camera cases. BH carries a few, and your local dive shop may carry some as well. They're thick plexiglas with o-ring seals, they have large external controls which are easy to manipulate with gloved hands, and they have big square rangefinder sites on the outside of the cases to facilitate framing your subjects while wearing a facemask. I've still got an Ikelite case and a 110 camera in the bottom of my dive bag -- it actually takes pretty reasonable 4 x 6 snapshots. Second, instead of your PZ-1P, consider using a 35-mm single-use camera. Ikelite makes a case for these disposable cameras, and one version has a diopter on a moveable pivot at the front of the case to allow you to take close-up macro shots. Hope this helps. Re: State of Science -- more interesting but OT stuff...
Hello all, I lost the beginning of the thread but I can imagine it is about how much we can trust the science magazines. In my opinion the answer is: it depends. I am a scientist for more than 10 years and I've read many good stuff and a lot of junk. If you are reading popular science magazines read it carefully because the articles were written for general public and they don't care a lot if they have consistency. They are very biased and it gives the impression science can discover everything in the universe in a few days. Science is a very expensive job. To have an idea, the actual experiment I work costs to the government 10 years of development and almost 2 billion dollars. The scientists have to push hard the congress and the public to justify this cost. This is the reason the general articles and reports to the public are extremely biased. We need to get the money to continue working. BTW, if you read articles in specialized magazines (in physics, say, Physical review letters, physical review, nuclear physics, etc) were the scientific community referees the articles before publication, about 99.9% of what you read is very serious stuff and it is a result for years of scientific work. But, these magazines are very expensive and you don't find them everywhere. But, sometimes, these articles are very difficult to understand even for the specialized audience because of the amount of details they have... I read a lot popular science magazines. they are funny and can give you general idea about other fields of scientific investigation. If this is not the main subject, sorry. Alex aimcompute wrote: Well we only have so much time in our lives John. When the quotation marks end then I read it in a different light. I didn't intend to broadly paint the scientific community as a whole in a bad light, even though I used the phrase scientific community. I am not anti-science at all, it's one of my favorite subjects. My poor choice of words has unfortunately led to that appearance. I mean, buy a digital back "should" be much cheaper than buy a digital body This is the main reason My wife doesn't like me to spend so much money on photography. :) Alex Chris Brogden wrote: On Thu, 8 Mar 2001, Alexandre A. I there is any reason to believe (not faith, please) please tell me. BTW, I don't want to give up Pentax. Ok, that makes sense. The digital SLR that Pentax announced is nice in that it will at least accept our lenses, even if we have to carry around a spare body as well. Much cheaper to get a spare body than to duplicate all of our lenses. I imagine that Pentax will have to release a hybrid body if the technology shifts that way, especially since they pride themselves on their compatibility (and rightly so). My question is: would having a hybrid body really be useful right now? If you're shooting both film and digital in the same shoot, then you should probably have a separate body for each so you don't have to change backs all the time. If you shoot one or the other, but not both at the same time, then it might come in handy. chris - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. You "really" don't need to have a body who talks to the digital back. Does your camera bodies talk to the film Someone can make a digital back that works the same way as film. You set shutter speed and aperture in the camera, click, the curtain opens, the CCD gets some light because of the curtain, it is triggered by the light level and it send the digital information to a memory stick. Don't need to much to go to digital But, if you want a LCD display to see the picture, do gamma correction, crop the image, and send it by e-mail to you address list that is saved hundred miles away from you That is a different point Alex John Francis wrote: "Alexandre A. P. Suaide" wrote: If the guys are smart enough we can make a digital back for pz-1p. the ccd can be triggered by some light level. It occurs when the curtain opens because there is light arriving in the CCD. We don't need to have electronic connections between the body and the CCD. We do a lot of this in Nuclear Physics with cosmic rays It is not so complicated Not complicated, perhaps. But it doesn't do very much. If you want to be able to see what your digital camera is doing without taking your eye away from the viewfinder it starts getting considerably more complex. A dedicated digital body that doesn't have to worry about mirror boxes, electro-mechanicval shutters, film transport, and optical viewfinders will, I assert, be cheaper than a digital back (especially since you have to take into account the cost of the modifications to the film-based body to talk to the digital back). -- John Francis [EMAIL PROTECTED] Silicon Graphics, Inc. The old F70 used to meter with MF lenses, and the F90x still does, but the F80 does not. That's why it should be called F69 (or whatever number between 69 and 66) in the first place. regards, Alan Chan I have taken an, admittedly, quick look at the Nikon USA website. It says that the N80 (F80) has three metering modes, "10 segment 3D Matrix Metering, Center-Weighted Metering and Spot Metering" so that would tend to make me think that you shouldn't lose all metering ability with AI-S, manual lenses. But, it does specifically state that the lens mount is "AF-D" so that *could* mean that only AF-D lenses (or newer) can be used. I guess it would be possible to limit an economy model autofocus camera this way. At least I guess it's an economy model since BH sells the body for under US$450, and the cost of the F100, and F5, are so much greater. I am going to have to ask a Nikon dealer friend of mine some questions about the N80. Hello The term yankee in Brazil is related to all North American people. This is not a official portuguese word but as many north american people think that the brazilian capital is buenos Aires, many brazilian people think that yankee means north american citizen The word yankee has this mean in Brazil since the world war II. In the war there were some North American Military bases in the NorthEast of Brazil and some stupid North American military person (we used to say in Brazil that military people does not have brain) said the "the yankees are coming to stop the nazists in the south atlantic...". So blame yourselves for the uncorrected terminology Actually, I moved from Brazil to USA one year ago and I like to live here as much as I like to live in Brazil. There are many differences but the people is as kind as in Brazil and the lifestyle is almost the same Alex Robert Harris wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: [Most of diatribe snipped and sent to the rubbish bin] That's something I hate about yankees. Most (North) Americans do not view themselves as Yankees despite the sloppy usa of the term in other countries. As the Oxford English Dictionary notes, the US usage is generally: U.S. A nickname for a native or inhabitant of New England, or, more widely, of the northern States generally; during the War of Secession applied by the Confederates to the soldiers of the Federal army. So some of us would view being called a Yankee as a serious insult, folks from our Southern states in particular, since many still remember that war with some bitterness.
