Re: PESO - Looking for the Perfect Wave
G'day all Thanks for all the feedback on this shot, particularly on alternative positioning of the wave and surfer suggested by Ken and Bruce. I hadn't really considered alternative compositions but I can see their potential - something to keep in mind next time I'm on the coast. The focus of the shot was intended to be the surfer with the wave just providing some secondary interest. Jack's second comment adds a bit of ambiguity to the shot that I hadn't realised. The surfer is actually heading out, not in, and the small wave is inbound. It's interesting how interpretations can vary. (As an aside, this kind of feedback is one of the reasons that this list is so valuable). Re: PESO - Looking for the Perfect Wave
Well, all the elements are there and I can see what you are trying to do. I guess one issue is what is the subject - the wave or the surfer? As it stands they seem to compete a bit. If it is the wave, then the surfer needs to be less dominant - almost out of frame or upper right corner or something. If it is the surfer then he is leading my eyes out of the frame. He is 3/4s out of the frame and on his way out. He needs to be much further to the left side of frame. -- Bruce Tuesday, June 15, 2010, 5:52:50 AM, you wrote: BW I was trying for a very simple composition here. Re: PESO - Looking for the Perfect Wave
I previously commented, but let me add that I agree with you, Christine. The surfer is leaving the ocean and is separated sufficiently from the small outbound wave so as not to conflict or distract. I prefer, as is true in this case, that the exiting figure be positioned nearer to the approaching frame edge. Re: Anyone looking into doing the webcam video from Chicago?
I have done a little Google research on this. Note that so far I was assuming use of my Mac, have not delved into what may be available on the Windows side. 1. Skype allows conference calls but I suspect this is an expensive and cumbersome way to go. 2. There are many programs that support video upload, e.g. to your own web site or to YouTube. 3. Streaming video is a problem though. Most solutions for the Mac build on OS-X Server tools. 4. I skipped by a couple of high-dollar commercial solutions. 5.. This may be a likely cross-platform solution, but my initial impression is that it requires a higher geek factor than I am able to bring to bear. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ stan On Apr 27, 2010, at 6:48 AM, m...@robertstech.com wrote: Is anyone seriously investigating this? From: Ken Waller Questioning the need for this at all ? Do you have internal HDs laying around that you're using as external HDs? Seems better to outright buy an external HD from the start - no need for this device. What am I missing? Seems to be for hot swapping multiple hard drives. I just ran into a use for them yesterday. Went back to my old school to apply for readmission; planning to reenter for summer semester. School now has a requirement that every student have a 100GB or larger hard-drive. Must be formatted FAT so it will work on both PC and Mac. All the workstations have these docks. You keep your work on the drive until you upload it to the instructor. Finishing and correction is heavily digital workflow. Other interesting changes - When I started in 2005 every student was required to have a medium format camera. With this academic year, every student has to have a DSLR, and the students are assigned a medium format camera from the school's inventory. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Mark, There are similar units from other manufacturers as well. You can choose by type of connectivity. Also, what is important is how well the HDD is cooled. Some of such toaster type devices are reported to heat up considerably. I heard good recommendations about Voyager from NewerTech: This one supports eSATA and Firewire connection, but not USB3 (only USB2 so far): http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/FWU2ES2HDK/ If you don't care for Firewire, this model supports USB2 + eSATA: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2ES2HDK/ USB3 is not widely supported yet (AFAIK). The manufacturer of iNeo also has eSATA and other models: http://www.neo2tech.com/index-product.html#usb30 HTH, Igor On Mar 21, 2010, at 12:32 PM, Mark Roberts wrote: http://news.cnet.com/2300-1041_3-10002863-7.html I might have to get one of these things. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It looks like Sigma announced some interesting looking lenses
I was poking around in the silly hope that the various colors of K-x announced for Europe would be coming to the states. As most people expected, there weren't really any announcements from Pentax, though Sigma seems to have announced some lenses that could be rather interesting if they have good image quality for the cost. Fast glass is always appealing to me. My 20/1.8 is back from Sigma and the nasty bumpiness in the focus may be gone. Time will tell, and I've been happy with the optics on it. 85/1.4 http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022015sigma85mm.asp I've been surprised at how often the 2/3 stop of 1.4 over 1.8 comes in handy. The little bit of extra reach and especially speed of this over my 77/1.8 could be handy. I'm sure the optics would be better than the Korean 85/1.4. Though I love my 77/1.8 so much that it's hard to imagine my using anything else in it's range when I didn't absolutely need the little extra bit of speed. 70-200/2.8 http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022016sigma70mm200mm.asp I doubt it would be nearly as nice as the Pentax 80-200/2.8, but it'd probably be a lot more affordable. 17-50 / 2.8 http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022014sigma17mm50mm.asp Same as above but with the 16-50. 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 rectilinear http://www.dpreview.com/news/1002/10022011sigma8mm16mm.asp If you're going to go wide, this could be very interesting. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: It looks like Sigma announced some interesting looking lenses
Larry, I also have the 77 Ltd, but sometimes I just need that extra 2/3 stop (for example when shooting live music). I'm waiting to see what the price on this Sigma 85mm is going to be, but I suspect it won't be cheap. This from DPR talking to Sigma Chief Operating Officer, Kazuto Yamaki, at the PMA 2010: FLD elements are also used in the [Sigma] 85mm F1.4, which has been attracting a lot of attention at the show. 'It's similar in concept to the 50mm F1.4 - it's bigger, heavier and more expensive than OEM lenses but achieves higher performance,' says Yamaki. 'We've made this for professional and advance amateur photographers,' he explained: 'we've tried to achieve better performance [than the OEM equivalents], particularly when using fully open apertures on the latest DSLRs.' So, on the one hand I'm expecting a very good lens, on the other hand I'm expecting to have my kidney to send over to BH. I am thinking that likes of DA 21 and DA 15 might be good options for you though they are not as fast. Or you can try DA 14. I hadn't realized that there was a DA 14/2.8 until I started poking around today. I thought that they were 4.0, but looking at my shots from the pdml gathering I guess that it was a 15mm. If you want a single lens solution then Sigma 17-70 is an option. Thanks to Jaume I had a chance of using it and mechanically it is ok. Given the darkness outdoors I cannot say too much about its optical performance though it seemed ok. It may not be as fast as I like at the long end, but I'm mostly looking for speed at the wide end, as I have primes for 30 on up. Can anyone tell me how fast it is at 30mm? There is also Tamron 17-35/2.8-4.0 that rivals similar Sigma lens that is an option too. Both Sigma and Tamron are full frame lenses which may prove useful later on or if you shoot film. Yet another option is Tamron 17-50/2.8 which I often recommend due to its price/performance ratio. Those all seem interesting. It seems that the wealth of possibilities may spare my pocketbook just through the mechanism of indecision. Last year at Dickens Fair (which starts again next weekend), I was thinking about the lens I needed for it, and pretty much came up with 16-50 f/2.8, without knowing that the lens already existed. -- The first step is learning to take great photos, the second step is learning to throw away ones that are merely good. Re: Looking for something wide and fast
Larry, Sigma produces 20,24 and 28mm 'macro' Full frame lenses. All are all f/1.8 and have an aperture ring :) I can post some pictures if you want, taken with the 28/1.8. The nice things about those is the very very close focussing distance (hence 'macro') which combined with the f/1.8 renders some very interesting DOF effects. I wouldn't call those sharpest lenses ever produced wide open tough. 2009/11/24 Larry Colen l...@red4est.com: Pentax 16-50 seems to go for $750-800 How do folks feel about these various lenses? The 16-50 is nice if you have money to burn. The 18-55 WR is also OK, weather sealed and el mucho cheapo. Have no experience with any of the others as I am still struggling what to sell and what to get next... Hi! On Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 10:02 AM, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote: This sounds very interesting. It seems to be a lens that some people love, others loathe. There also seems to be a 24/1.8. Larry, Sigma produces 28/1.8, 24/1.8 and 20/1.8 lenses. Due to significant sample variation, the reviews range from very contained all the way to ecstatic. Personally, I decided for now to not buy 20/1.8 or 24/1.8 though it does look tempting. The reasons being that I am not exactly happy with the way Sigma lenses render color. Also where I live, it will be virtually impossible to arrange proper cherry picking. And these lenses are rather big in size and heavy in weight. Thus, my decision to go look for FA* 24/2 which is argued to be better optically and smaller physically. There is another Sigma lens, one which I would buy in an instant if I find a good sample - AF 24/2.8 Macro II. I had this one borrowed from a friend. Wonderful optic. Read somewhere that it was either co-developed or co-produced or co-something with Leica. As sharp as A 24/2.8, slightly more prone to flare, good bokeh and AF. Just as small and light (52 mm filter diameter). On digital it would make close to ideal street shooter's autofocus lens of angle of view of 36 mm with DOF of 24 mm lens. -- Boris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

All are all f/1.8 and have an aperture ring :) I can post some pictures if you want, taken with the 28/1.8. The nice things about those is the very very close focussing distance (hence 'macro') which combined with the f/1.8 renders some very interesting DOF effects. Very interesting, as in paper thin? I wouldn't call those sharpest lenses ever produced wide open tough. I see myself having two uses for the 20/1.8. The first is indoor dance photography. The lighting tends to be very challenging, i.e. ISO 3200, 1/6 - 1/20 second at f/1.8, with the subjects moving. I suspect that in those conditions a little softness in the lens may not be noticed. I've also been doing some landscape work, particularly nightscapes. Exposures tend to be ISO 400, f/1.8 and 10-30 seconds. My 18-250 simply isn't fast enough to get much good shots, especially at ISO 400 (cue snickering by Dave Savage). Would you guess that the lens would not be the significant weak link in those situations? How sharp is it at f/2.8 or 3.5? At 3.5 is it noticably worse than the 18-55 AL or the 18-250 at 20mm? At times like this, I envy the Canikon crowd, because one of them could probably find someone locally that had the lenses and try them out. -- The first step is learning to take great photos, the second step is learning to throw away ones that are merely good. I have one of those and your words describe it very accurately. It is a gem of a lens, pity it doesn't have the improved anti reflection coatings of the EX series lenses. I had a Pentax FA* 24 mm. 2.0 which I liked a lot on film, less on the digital bodies and finally sold it. The FA* has many virtues: it is fast, well built, focuses fast and it is very contrasty. On the other hand, it shows red-green CA, easily correctable in post processing though. I also have a Sigma EX 28 mm. 1.8 which I like a lot, except for its weight and bulk. Re: Looking for something wide and fast
I have the Zenitar and the DA 14/2.8. I prefer primes in general, but especially at the focal lengths that would be considered the wide and narrow ranges of a given zoom. The Zenitar is worth it's money, but tends to be easily susceptible to flare/reduced contrast in the center of the image circle. I much prefer the DA 14 for it's flare resistance, large lens hood, and of course AF. I love my DA* 16-50. It's plenty fast and very sharp and contrasty throughout the range. But I also like the DA 12-24. Not as fast at f4 wide open, but very good performance, and that extra chunk of angle of view comes in handy now and then. I frequently use it to shoot automobile and home interiors. You give up QSF, but get a lens which is as fast or faster throughout its range than the DA 16-45 and is better built, is a very good performer optically, offers 1:2.3 magnification and has a zoom lock which locks it at 17mm I generally used it as a 17mm prime with reach when I needed it, mostly left it locked at 17mm.
