March PUG - Apology
It seems I've overlooked submissions from Rick & Bill. I'm not sure what happened. I have a system whereby submissions are redirected to my personal email account but those two didn't show up there. On checking the Komkon server, I see that they are indeed there. Give me half & hour or so and I'll add them to the gallery. Apology
I was just looking over some older posts and I noticed my PESO, At the Outlet Mall. I read the thread and I realize that, in my misguided attempt to be funny I actually insulted my common law wife, Judy. Calling her the missus is patronizing and demeaning. I don't think of her that way and it was wrong of me to refer to her that fashion. Despite what I said in the thread, I quite enjoyed my day. Although outlet malls are scary places to be, we went at my behest not hers, and I did indeed encourage to buy the bag I mentioned, not because I was trying to appease or manipulate her, but because I really liked it and knew she did too. Although I was tired at the time I took the photo, the day was not one of boredom; rather, I had fun despite the location. We always have fun when we're with each other, no matter where we are. I apologize publically to Judy and this list for saying those things about her and our day. cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

ot, but still pentax-related: an apology
No, it's not about the joke on Boris... I have just finished a tough project, and the last few days I simply skimmed the PDML daily looking for specific bits that would allow me to get the most out of my current photo gear in the photographic part of said project. The interesting part is the best way to complete the job is keeping 35mm cameras and some rolls of high iso film nearby. And that includes an old camera capable of 72 low quality shots per roll, something most unusual in working condition but already procured. ;-) Special thanks for all who posted samples, experiences, ideas and even biased theories about the possible or impossible use of DA lenses in 35mm. After the first and hasty question I found a large and precious amount of information, needed fast because I had a strict deadline to present my project. I won't lie - the project I submitted will not be performed with Pentax gear. Not because the other brand is better, but because it's cheaper and quicker to buy the rest of the needed gadgets from the other brand. Wich is also easier to sell after the project is completed - assuming of course the cameras will survive a hot, dusty, isolated environment. Possible. All needed parts are currently available here, some are already home. Buying Pentax would allow me to use some items I already own, and keep the extras at the end of the service. But that would mean yet more tangle with BR customs, shipping rates, actual availability of the lens - and still face the possible wear due to harsh conditions. I would not save something in the buying phase, and would not be selling after. Buying, using and than selling the other brand looks strange, but I'll possibly lose close to nothing as I already own the film camera and will not be keeping it after the job is done. I'll be still watching for the best 35mm coverage in my new Pentax lenses, as I'm still keeping some 35mm cameras nearby. But this job - assuming I get the green light, there are others trying and mine is unusual for sure - is going to be a dark side job. The apology?? Almost forgot... :-) I simply didn't try to keep up with your galleries and photos - and I'm not happy bout it. Too much stress, too little free time. That's changing from now on, hopefully. Your photos (and videos) are very important for me - for some dark time they helped to keep what (little, but some) sanity I have. Thanks, friends. That's all, folks. I just felt you should know a little more about the quest for the 35mm lens coverage, and why I didn't comment - and watched - your photos as usual, lately. Do keep some fingers crossed for my project... :-) LF -- Luiz Felipe luiz.felipe at techmit.com.br http://techmit.com.br/luizfelipe/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Marnie wrote: Hmmm, I have an nVida card. :-( How do you run the Spyder startup routine manually, Jostein? On your Start menu in Windows, move the mouse to all programs, and then to startup. There you will find an icon for the Spyder (possibly called OptiCal, depending on your Spyder version). Press down the CTRL key while dragging the icon (with the mouse) onto the desktop. Then you have an easily accessible shortcut which you can double-click at will. Note that not all nVidia cards are affected. I have a card sporting the 7600-series chipset in my old computer, and that works just fine. It's just the 8600-series, afaik. Shouldn't be a problem with the driver overriding the colour profile set by the system, I think. We have two different series of recent (G550-based) Matrox cards at work, and neither mess up colour profiles. I think that doing as you suggest could be the right thing to do; to insert the calibrated profile as default. From your first post I assume you have recently made a switch from CRT to LCD screen. This AM I finally became convinced that my computer's LED screen was too dark. I dug out my Huey and set about its re-calibration. When finished, I saw a much lighter screen image. I went back and pulled up First Snow which was posted by Francis, I believe, and saw what I consider a beautifully exposed image. All my saved files (the ones I checked) are now lighter, to the point where I set about doing some re-works. It hadn't been that long since last using Huey, so am surprised. Bill, Jack, Just out of curiosity; which chipset are your video cards based on? I ask because I'm annoyed with my nVidia 8600 -based card. It's made by Asus, but brand doesn't matter since nVidia provides the drivers. What strikes me as odd is that the perceived quality is higher for a 1024x768 pixel digital image than for a slide with much higher resolution. It's simply a lot more pleasing to look at. Re: Apology and review (of Sandisk photoviewer).
I did a slide show for family at Christmas time via the Sandisk viewer. Not straight from the camera; rather, I assembled a set of images on my computer, downloaded to a CF card and went from there. Some observations: 1. The viewer has a slow processor. Smaller images process faster. Next time I will downsize the images I use in such a show. 2. My computer stored the files in Name order on the CF card. I could have forced a Date order but that would have been a mishmash because the date on the files is when they are created on the card, the original creation date isn't inherited. In either case, you have a linear show, no easy capability to sort like images together. 3. I tried to solve the linearity problem by creating a series of folders. I hoped that the viewer would progress folder-by-folder (with linearity within folders). Instead it pulled the top image from each folder in succession, then the second image from each folder, etc. Conclusion: if you want to use the Sandisk as an alternative for a slide projector, and you are used to sorting your slides into a story line which is not the same as the order of image capture and you want to control the duration of viewing for an individual image from very brief to longer times, then: - reduce the file sizes - rename all of the images using a sequence number reflecting the desired ordering of images. Note that I have not commented on image quality. Those interested in quality projection are encouraged to explore something called film. Certain films are suited for projection via a process that involves shining a light through the film onto a piece of stretched material called a screen. Check the oldies-but-goodies section of your local store. Stan On Jan 29, 2005, at 10:52 AM, mike wilson wrote: Hi, It appears I was entirely incorrect about Godfrey. Mine had an intersting foible: if you were looking at a preview page of images, there was one large image in the top left corner, surrounded by about 8 smaller images on the right and bottom sides. I'm not so sure I agree with that, after thinking about this post for a while I started thinking about a Pentax K 28mm F3.5 for $22.50 'cause it was mis-listed as an SLR, a like new *ist body for $105.00 in the wrong catagory and several pieces found by creatively trying lots of different mis-spellings (or alternate spellings such as ZX5N instead of with the hyphen) for items. I think deals can still be unearthed by those who spend A LOT of time looking. I know I'd be miffed if one of those hard found listings showed up here for someone to grab out from under me without having worked for it. (Just my HO) Now the question: Nowhere can I find any guidelines covering this (eBay Listings), or for FS items, or what's allowed for OT subjects, or for that matter what AW stands for! I am a newcomer to this list, but from experience I KNOW there are rules, and do my best to figure 'em out. But I am not going to lurk for 5 years just to do so, I'd rather be hollered at than not participate. SO hows about a little FAQ with dos and don'ts and definitions so us newbies don't have to rub quite so much fur the wrong way? There used to be one when the list was at Pentax but it didn't cover some of the above topics, and now it appears to be gone altogether. This is violated often, until someone goes off the deep end and then most of us shut up. Guns/Cat Photos: A former popular list participant swore he would leave the list if anyone mentioned them. He left anyway which shows that you might as will ignore such stuff. However, many consider Guns/Abortion/Etc as part of Politics and Religion, so generally they should be avoided. Although Cat Photos are now seemingly OK again. Flames/Trolls: People who can not keep from continually attacking others, or who insist on trying to incite folks to anger should be totally ignored, these are the only folks I filter out of my mail stream, and I would suggest everyone else do the same. For they will, if they have their way, destroy the nicest mailing list on the Internet. Note: losing your cool now and then is not the same thing at all, or I would have to killfile my own posts (embarrassed grin). PAW-- Photo A Week (also PESO-- Photo Every So Often), a thing introduced to the list a while back by Shel Belinkof where you can put up a photo you want commented on and folks will tell you how you should have done it (grin). WOW-- Work Over a Week, similar to the above where you post a photo somewhere that folks can download it, and they run it through Photo Shop or whatever to show you how they would have done it. Seems like a good learning tool, but I have not seen any lately. Those are the only ones I can think of that have mass general agreement, though common courtesy is always appreciated here. Some folks do not like the off topic stuff, but we who engage in it are usually the old timers here, and are not going to pay much attention to them (grin). 99.9% of the people on this list are great wonderful terrific (add 16 more superlatives of your choice here) people who anyone would be glad to have as friends. I especially know this because many have gone out of their way to help me from time to time. We talk about doing this about twice a year, but it never seems to go very far. So, if anyone has additions, changes, or corrections let me know and I will edit this and put it up somewhere it can be accessed at anytime. -- Don Sanderson wrote: SO hows about a little FAQ with dos and don'ts and definitions so us newbies don't have to rub quite so much fur the wrong way? There used to be one when the list was at Pentax but it didn't cover some of the above topics, and now it appears to be gone altogether. I am more than willing to follow the rules, IF I know what they are! (Kinda reminds me of my boss, I know you don't know how to do this, but do it anyway. And do it RIGHT!) Well, seriously, Tom, that's a pretty good, relatively comprehensive (without being heavyhanded or overly longish) PDMLFAQ you've got there. You were right in your intro: it's all common sense, really, isn't it? My only addendum (other that the don't believe frank thing) is that I always thought that the prohibition re: ongoing eBay auctions was for Pentax stuff, not other photographic stuff. Except, as you said, joke or novelty things, like that giant Pentax body and the clear Pentax body (both promotional items). Mind you, every time the eBay thing comes up, it turns into a fairly contentious thing, so maybe I should just leave well enough alone... vbg cheers, frank = The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds.
