I bought it when I bought my K-1, because to me the main technical advantage of

Aside from nerding out about the gear, I think I have gotten a few decent

Thank you, that is Thor’s Well just south of Yachats Oregon. Here are my other
posted photos of it, some from an outlook several miles away so you can look
down and see it in context. It’s definitely worth a stop.
https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00=date-taken-desc=thor%20well_all=1

Do be careful, on one of my visits I got knocked over by a particularly large
flood of water, both cameras went into the drink and my 15-30 stopped focusing.
I sent it to Precision, they said it had water damage and could not be
repaired and didn’t charge me, but it was working just fine. I think that
banging the lens cap against the rocks might have just knocked a connector
loose.

It’s a hole in the rocks that connects to a cave and at tides over about +4
feet waves will push water up the hole, it will spout or flow onto the rocks
and then flow back down the hole. On one of my trips I had gone to Devil’s
punch bowl about half a mile North of there, and within a month or two, two
different friends posted photos of Thor’s well.

to take the photo I’m trying for.

I bought it when I bought my K-1, because to me the main technical advantage of
the K-1 was faster lenses at wider angle of view than I could get with an APS
body. I.e. there wasn’t a 10-20 that was f/2.8 or faster in APS.

Aside from nerding out about the gear, I think I have gotten a few decent
images with this lens.

Gallery of 15-30 photos

2022-03-27 Thread Larry Colen
On facebook someone was asking about the 15-30. It turned out that I had
already made an album of some photos I had taken with the 15-30 at night, and I
added a few more stretching the definition of night to duskish. It turns out
that most of my reasons for the 15-30 are more about versatility (zoom,
reasonably fast, reasonably wide, and weather sealing) rather than absolute
technical ability. It doesn’t matter how sharp the lens is if I can’t use it
to take the photo I’m trying for.

I bought it when I bought my K-1, because to me the main technical advantage of
the K-1 was faster lenses at wider angle of view than I could get with an APS

John -

I think jAlbum is probably hands down the best gallery software
available for a reasonable price.  It comes in two flavors - Standard
and Pro - with the difference being the Pro allows you to use it for
sales and have a shopping cart.  Otherwise, the features are the same.
There is a wide variety of skins available or you can customize your own
and, unlike some others, you can have your own site rather than
uploading to the "company" site. The Standard is $49 and includes a year
of updates.  After a year the software is still yours to use but you get
no further updates without an annual purchase.

There's nothing obvious listed in my Ubuntu repository. I don't have GIMP
installed on this machine but will see if it has any gallery creation options
on the desktop later today. There must be at least dozens of Windows options

But have we seen the end of the PDML Annual?

The PPG is certainly not perfect, but it is the best we have at this point.
I agree about your comment on the PPG favoring images with "pop" and
"sizzle." I submitted one of my favorite images, a study of the texture of
tree bark. It was rejected. I submitted it again, and it was rejected
again. I submitted it a third time, in a different category, and it was
approved -- and placed in the Premiere Gallery. It was a matter of getting
the right people to look at it.

Many years back I submitted a few photos to the PPG, and quickly
realized that the photos that got voted in were not the ones I
considered my best work but rather the ones that had the most "pop" and
"sizzle".

My other experience with "juried" work has been the PDML annual. If the
PPG were judged by those standards I think that the photos would be
chosen for a more "educated palette" and more interesting to me. I
think that I've just been spoiled by what I see on PDML.

I am just curious as to who else is submitting and voting on images in the
PPG, now that it is reactivated, and what kind of experiences you are
having there.

Overall, the "new" gallery is very nice, but I don't understand how Ricoh
is handling the submissions process.

Since the gallery was reactivated, I have had 3 submissions approved, and
none declined.

I had about 60 images in the "Pending Photos" queue, all submitted between
March and June of 2018, and none of those has been processed. I submitted
two on Sep 23, and both were approved in about a week. I submitted 13 on
Sep 25, none of which has been processed. I submitted one on October 11,
which was approved in less than two days. I submitted two more on Oct.
16,

neither of which have yet been processed.

It appears they are ignoring submissions from 2018, although they all
still

appear in the "Pending Photos" folder. The process for approving recent
submissions seems almost random.

Quite curious.

The two images I submitted on Sep 23 have been approved and moved to the

My "Pending Photos" collection includes another 50 or o that were submitted

Just a SWAG, but maybe they won't let you delete a lens from your gear list if
that lens was used on one of the photos that are already in your gallery. You
still "own" it as long as an image made with it is in your gallery.

Can you delete images from your own gallery?

Re: Pentax Photo Gallery

2019-09-27 Thread John
If I remember, the approval process required a certain number of "members" to
vote the images in. How is that affected by the Gallery having been down for so
long and probably most "members" having moved on and are not aware the Gallery
is back in operation?

Do you think enough "members" are back to viewing new submissions to constitute
a voting quorum?

They never recognized my user ID or password until I asked to reset my

and that let me "update" my user name and password.
After that, everything worked fine.

Re: Pentax Photo Gallery - Revived?

2019-09-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
In general, the new gallery seems to function well, perhaps better than the
old gallery.
A few quirks I find a bit inconvenient:

1. When you log in and look at your own gallery, you can see the image
titles, but not if you are not logged in or are looking at someone else's
gallery. (I like the titles; sometimes they explain the image.)

2. The old galleries had the newest images at the top, and the oldest at
the end. This starts with the oldest images (except for some unknown
reason, they put 3 random images from 2011 ahead of my 2009 images, which
are nicer!) This means I have to scroll all the way to the bottom to see if
anything has changed.

3. In the "All" gallery view, there is no indication if an image is
approved, Pending or rejected.

4. No new entries in the Premiere Collection. If they add to that, that
would be an indication that someone from Ricoh is actually looking at the
images and evaluating them.

All in all, I am just glad it is back.

It's in the upper right of the GREY area, just above the 3rd artist on the top
row (I see three across when I click on Artists).

It's just a small banding box the same color as the background - Grey on Grey.

You come up when I search for you, but a search for "Dan Matyola" returns
"Sorry, No Artists Found".

The coming week is filled with out-of-towners coming to visit.

One thing for sure: You're going to need earplugs to drive it. That thin little
wall and clear glass dividing you from that engine is not going to keep
interior noise under 150db... :)

Hopefully it is built on a frame with a bit better suspension than the VW
Transporter had. Or it's just a blaster for drag racing...

True enough. In fact, conventional dragsters are engineered to break just in
front of the engine in a collision. Plus, weight transfer is accomplished via
the chassis bowing. This guy is riding on the wrong and very dangerous end of
the machine.
