Is there an analog only Pentax list?

Just joined the list, so I apologize if this has been asked a million times.

Is there some kind of Pentax discussion list that is just for analog

Thanks.

Welcome to that list! The PDML goes both ways, so to speak...

There's just been some news for owners of the ist-D digital SLR so the
traffic on the list is leaning towards the digital side today.

There's also a YahooGroups Spotmatic list. Again, not quite so active as
this one.

So, Rob, what older Pentax gear are do you have/are you interested in
talking about? I've got Spotmatics, an LX and an MX. There are many here
with those cameras, and many other beloved older Pentaxes. As someone
already mentioned, today's a high traffic digi-day, with the release of some
new firmwear (whatever the hell that is) only a few hours old. They'll calm
down, and you'll see a bit of film talk again.

I've got an MX. Mostly I'm interested in just seeing what people have
to say about lenses. I've found some lens review sites around on the
web and many of them are compilations of comments from this list so I
figured I'd go right to the source and see what was going on.

Just started shooting with the MX again after a year of shooting
exclusively with a Rolleicord V and wanted to get a coupla lenses to
compliment the 50/1.4. Probably something shorter and something
longer with the same build quality and a similiar look and feel to
photos (good bokeh, mostly shooting at or near wide open). Something
that goes well with Tri-X for handheld, available light, street and
travel photography. Maybe the 24/2.8 and one of the 85's or 100's.
Three seems like the perfect number. Can bring them all without much
overlap. Though the K 35/2 is also appealing...

Maybe add an LX sometime in the distant future.

I'd venture to say that most lists tend to discuss the new stuff. This list
has a much higher discussion of old equipment than most other lists have.
Of course, the solution is to ask the questions and get the answers. Nobody
should just hang around lurking and waiting for someone else to ask their
question for them.

I agree with your assessment of the K35/2.0. On the other hand, the

frequently used lenses.

Re: Is there an analog only Pentax list?

There are a number of highly regarded lenses out there at reasonable prices,
especially if you don't need fast glass. I have a kit of a K 28/3.5, K
35/3.5 (almost flare proof), M 50/1.4, M 100/4.0 macro, M 135/3.5, M
200/4.0, and an FA 300/4.5 (another legendary lens, very sharp). Bodies are
a K 1000 and a Z-1p. Everything listed cost me less then $1000, actually
between $800-$900 IIRC. KEH has a very good reputation on the list as does
B&H.

Which 50/1.4 do you have?
The M. Just developed some pictures taken with it and am very pleased.

I'm not crazy about the K35/2.0 ... oh, it's a fine optic when stopped
down a bit, and i even like it wide open, but it's a little large for my
taste. Much prefer the smaller size of the K35/3.5. If you can find
one, the K30/2.8 is a great compromise between size and weight and
aperture, and, IMO, a better lens all around than the K35/2.0 ... since
I've gotten the 30mm I rarely use the 28 or either of the 35's.
I had read somewhere that the K 35/2 was one of the best of the 35's
and that the M wasn't as good. I've never seen one so I don't know
the size/weight difference. Not sure if I'd like the 30/2.8 as I
don't really like 28's and I'd like something faster and less rare.

The K24/2.8 is another fine lens, although methinks it's a bit wide for
good "street photography," but I guess that depends on your definition of
the practice and your shooting style.
I had a 28mm 3.5 and just didn't really like it very much. Not the
lens quality so much as the perspective, sorta too wide or not wide
enough. Total personal preference. So I thought the 24 might be more
fun. I was just flipping through some photos I'd cut from the paper,
sort of documentary style stuff and many of them were pretty wide
angle. Also might be nice for indoor stuff like churches etc while
traveling.

I'm going to keep my eye out for the 85 1.8.

Thanks for all the info.

There are a few here that carry this combination; mine lives in a coat
pocket.
I just picked up one of these (a week too early it seems as there are
like 10 on Ebay right now). Haven't shot much with it yet so am
withholding judgement.

First impression is that it's damn small though a bit tough to focus
the small focusing ring. Also looks significantly dimmer in the
viewfinder than the 50 1.4 (only other lens I have for comparison).

Gonna shoot some film with it and see how it looks.

It is with its hood on. What's needed for it is a metal lens cap. It's my favourite
lens for leaving on the MZ-S, once you get used to the silver on black combination.

Right now, today, my *ist-D two lens solution would be
20/2.8 and 43/1.9. My three lens solution would be 20/2.8,
31/1.8, 77/1.8. but I feel uncomfortable about not having a
100mm macro with me, so three becomes four... My one-lens
solution would be the 31/1.8. Or, if a zoom, the 20-35/4.0.

Note that all of the above is very tentative and may change
by tomorrow morning. Like Rob, I have not settled on the
"kit" that I should carry for different circumstances.

I think that "modern" cameras wouldn't work well with "ERC's". Their bodies
are have irregular shapes. Not like slab-sided Spotties and the like.
Besides, with all the control surfaces sticking out from every surface of
the bodies these days, designing a workable one that would not destroy the
usability of those interfaces would be near impossible.

Yeah, I agree. I tried a M50 1.7 on the *istD (which acts like a 75)
and it's a very small lens. That makes a very small "walk around"
package without the grip. A slow "60" just isn't much use.

Probably, although an ERC came with my first SLR, a Ricoh XR1, and as most people
seemed to be using one on those days I assumed they came with all. They're great for
when you want to go out with just the camera and one lens, and provide protection
against the elements and knocks.
I have one for the MX with two different front parts, one that snugly fits the 40mm
pancake, and one that fits the 50mm f1.7 M or the 28mm f2.8 M.
I also have one for the MZ-S with two front sections, one that 'fits' the 43mm f1.9
ltd or my 19mm f3.5 Vivitar, and one that 'fits' the 24-90mm or the 90mm Tamron macro.
These don't fit anywhere near as well as the MX one though.

Nick.

There is no M 50mm f/1.2.
There is a K version, which is highly regarded, and an A version, which is
quite nice.

Dear Curmudgeon,

Of course I could have googled it. I know that!

But it's ever so much more fun asking on-list, don't you think?

BTW (and this isn't directed at you, Tom, just at "TLA's" in general), ERC,
TLA, BTW and all those other alleged TLA's aren't acronyms. They're
initialisms. A true acronym spells another (usually unrelated) word. So
PUG, for instance, is an acronym.

Now, I have a feeling that someone's going to tell me I'm wrong. But I'm
not.

cheers,

Ok, so TLA isn't really a three letter acronym, then.
But it is a three letter abbreviation.

Not according to AH3:

abúbreúviúaútion P Pronunciation Key (-brv-shn)
n.
1. The act or product of shortening.

2. A shortened form of a word or phrase used chiefly in writing to
represent the complete form, such as Mass. for Massachusetts or USMC
for United States Marine Corps.

3. Mus. Any of various symbols used in notation to indicate that a
series of notes is to be repeated.

dictionary.com omits the last one.

Common usage has evolved away from your dictionary definition.

By the way (BTW), anyone ever wonder why all these alphabet soup intials
on the

internet? Well, the old time Unix hackers couldn't tough type so spelling
out

words was a pain. Bandwidth was very limited, anyone remember 110baud?
And,

mostly, making things criptic to outsiders seemed cute to those, mostly,
college

kids. So, that leaves the question, why do we do it?

2004-01-11 Thread Rebekah Gonzalez
Actually, I think the term "alphabet soup" originated in the Great
Depression in America, when a lot of government programs were initiated to
help people out . Since almost all of them went by an acronym, the common
people started calling the government alphabet soup. At least that's what I
heard; I'm kind of a history nut. I think that it's interesting, sorry if
you don't!
