I have to say, Mark, this is very good news indeed. I have to say I didn’t
realize this kind of thing could happen, though I am not a tech sophisticate,
so no surprise there.

Happy you were able to troubleshoot and solve your problem.
Cheers, Christine

Re: OT - My blog is dead!

2014-10-02 Thread Mark C
I heard back from both the B2Evolution forums and also from my webhost.
Someone at B2E looked at the error message and sent me a suggested hack
to the install script. That advanced the install a short way forward
but it crashed later on.

My webhost will restore the SQL backup for free. However, they said that
it looks like the updated version of b2e is not comparable with some
server settings so their recommendation is to restore the old database
and old version of the blog and roll with that. I have asked them if
they could be a little more specific.

They said that nothing on the server had changed recently, so the
question remains as to why the blog stopped working. In digging through
the B2E forums I found a couple of others who had the same problem that
I had with their blogs and the one person who posted on the resolution
ascribed the issue to a change in settings in Apache.

I may restore the old database and blog software and either move to a
new host or try an incremental update. I'd like to hear back from the
B2E since they seem pretty responsive.

OT - My blog is dead!

2014-10-01 Thread Mark C
Last night I tried to post a couple of new images and found that new
posts would no longer display on my blog - the content was in the posts
when opened for editing but the published pages came up with just the
titles and no content in the body of the post. Since the version of
B2Evoluiton that I was using was over 5 years old, I tried upgrading as
a hopeful solution - but the upgrade process crashed partway through. It
did update the mySQL database enough to make it incompatible with older
versions of B2E, though!

Ug - I do have backups of the database and the rest of the site from
Friday, yesterday and today, so hopefully I can restore it and try
again. This would probably be a good time to rethink what platform to
use to share images, though at any rate I'd hate to lose almost 10 years
worth of blogging!

I hate dealing with this stuff because I have no idea of the
technicalities involved. HOpefully the forums on b2evolution.net will
have a useful solution.

My advice with backups is to never trust a hosting provider to do them for you,

Attila's advice about the upgrade is good, maybe you can upgrade incrementally

Re: OT - My blog is dead!

2014-10-01 Thread Darren Addy
I've learned, through administering some company wordpress sites that
one really needs to stay on top of upgrading to the latest releases
(of everything: Wordpress, themes, plug-ins, etc.) I imagine the same
is true of just about any software out there (Drupal, Joomla,
b2evolution, etc.)There are vulnerabilities that open up and bots are
written to look for those vulnerable versions and exploit them.

Checking the Changelog of your software will often be informative on
what improvements have been made and sometimes what vulnerabilities
have been patched:
http://www.longtermfix.com/test/blog/doc/changes.html

Googling: b2evolution [your version number] vulnerability
will also give some insights into what might have happened. It looks
like b2evolution has been vulnerable to SQL injections and so that
would be my first guess. In some cases the vulnerability results in
your site being used to spam which ends up getting your site
blacklisted by your web host or Google or other sites.

That being said, you will surely find more knowledgeable people on the
b2evolution forums.

2014-10-01 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting Mark C pdml-m...@charter.net:

Last night I tried to post a couple of new images and found that new
posts would no longer display on my blog - the content was in the
posts when opened for editing but the published pages came up with
just the titles and no content in the body of the post. Since the
version of B2Evoluiton that I was using was over 5 years old, I
tried upgrading as a hopeful solution - but the upgrade process
crashed partway through. It did update the mySQL database enough to
make it incompatible with older versions of B2E, though!

Ug - I do have backups of the database and the rest of the site from
Friday, yesterday and today, so hopefully I can restore it and try
again. This would probably be a good time to rethink what platform
to use to share images, though at any rate I'd hate to lose almost
10 years worth of blogging!

I hate dealing with this stuff because I have no idea of the
technicalities involved. HOpefully the forums on b2evolution.net
will have a useful solution.

So that's why I'm getting an XML Parse Error on the RSS feed. hope
you can get it back up soon.

I think the Blogspot servers are not fully integrated in the Google

transferred as-is when Google bought Blogspot.

BobW, I suspect your antivirus software. If you have all the
preemptive scanning functionality enabled for your web browser, it
means that all linked-in content is scrutinised. In cases of ad
servers gathering statistics without really giving content back I
think you will end up waiting for connection timeouts, which are
fairly short as such, but quite annoying nonetheless.

My fundamental tool for ad blocking is the hosts file. Redirects
unwanted domains to local host 127.0.0.1

Blocked ads leave a frame with a box that says Unable to connect.
Firefox can't establish a connection with whatever domain, so you know
what ad site has been blocked.

You can edit the hosts file to unblock that site if you want to.

The only time it has ever given me any trouble was some BBC videos that
started out by redirecting to a commercial hosted on doubleclick. They'd
give that endless arrow chasing around in a circle with a message
waiting for so and so down in the lower left corner of the browser.

I ended up giving those videos a pass.

There are some sites essentially unreachable because they redirect to a
pass through ad that's on one of the blocked hosts. But if the site is
going to resort to that kind of deceptive action, I don't want to go
there anyway.

It won't block ads that are actually hosted on the site if the site
itself is not on the list - like NYTimes has most of their web
advertising actually on the NYTimes server.

It's easy to update and add in new SPAM sites.

I use Chrome too but mainly FF, with as others have said Adblock plus
and Flash block installed, it's really low maintenance. The ads block
lists are updated by subscription automatically and flash block
creates a little play icon over the blocked page element. If you want
to white list a page to flash block I think it involves a right click
and selection, I don't really remember as it's almost a thoughtless
process. So many pages look so cluttered on browsers without any ad
blocking tools active.

i generally tune out static ads so well that i'm surprised when they
catch the attention of someone looking at the same page; i use RSS a lot
too, which avoids ads for the majority of blogs unless or until i load
specific articles; it also avoids that interminable loading of the last
6 months of images that some photo blogs (not Frank's) do by default

active ads i handle with ClickToFlash in Safari, a very simple and
effective tool that makes viewing Flash an elective process and also
facilitates access to H.264 rather than Flash versions of YouTube content

http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash/

sometimes i turn off JavaScript temporarily too, because with 60 tabs
open in my browser, i don't always want to have to hunt for the page
that is soaking up CPU cycles (and draining my battery)

Bob W has mentioned that lately my blog is ~very~ slow, to the point
that today he couldn't get on.

I certainly have no problems.

How is it for others?

http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/

I'm not sure what I can do about it, other than post somewhere else?

Thanks for your help.

Fine for me (UK 22.40 BT Broadband).

  Cotty

its almost instant for me as a single and one of the first to finish
loading when I open my photo blog tabs. so no problems here on my dsl

you could cut down on the number of posts on each page.

took about 40 seconds to finish loading just now; everything above the
fold rendered very quickly, then it stalled with zero network activity
for most of that time; i wonder if Bob's browser doesn't render until
everything is loaded? (i used Safari)

i usually view individual posts via RSS, though, and never see a
significant lag there

there seems to be zero color info in the black whites, so it might
load a little faster if you used grayscale instead of RGB (or does JPG
moot that point?); but i don't think downloading the images is the problem

Not everything that gets posted to the blog ends up a PESO. Sometimes
after I look at it on the blog I decide that for whatever reason it
just doesn't make the grade for this august list.

;-)

Thanks, Ann!

No problems from work or home. Frank, recently Google introduced Buzz
which might have put certain load on their servers. But generally, I
don't find your blog to be any slower than other sites I frequent.
