From: Godfrey DiGiorgi BTW: What value is there in ".docx" files vs .doc files? or even vs .rtf files? I've never seen one. I'd be curious to know. Pages '09 reads .DOCX files too, how they differ from .DOC files and what advantage they pose seems invisible. Opening .docx files requires M$ Office 2007 or later. The "advantage" is a file format that can't be opened by earlier versions of Word. You have to buy an upgrade to at least Office 2007 if you are required to work with .docx files. .docx indicates the file is compliant with Micro$oft's proprietary Office Open XML "standard" (not to be confused with XML, Office XML, Open Office XML or Open XML). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Microsoft can change RTF at anytime and not bother to notify anyone. It is essentially an uncompilable DOC file. It's major advantage is that it's Human readable though it's not nearly as structured as HTML, and by human readable I mean just barely. You can hand code RTF documents that while following all the rules of RTF such as they are, will crash pretty much every RTF reader including Word, with nary an error message. It was ancient history in 2002 when it was renamed AppleWorks from ClarisWorks. It never exported Word .DOC files very well, but it could output usable .RTF files. I wouldn't recommend using AppleWorks at all on Mac OS X v10.6 "Snow Leopard" ... It was buggy even half a decade ago. I converted all my ClarisWorks/AppleWorks word processing documents to .RTF and imported them into Pages, then output them as Pages documents. Only a few documents created with mixed module combinations (CW/AW word-paint-vector graphics) caused me any grief ... and none of those were needed in an editable form, so I just output them as PDFs and tossed the originals. I detest Office. I'll use it when needed ... I have an alternative boot disk that I can run it from if it's absolutely necessary ... but it's so buggy and loads so much crap onto a system that unless I was dependent on it I'd rather not have it installed. I have no need of Word ... PowerPoint, Excel, or Entourage neither ... so why should I waste the disk space on this crap? -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Paul, Pages imports and exports Word .DOC files or .RTF files. They work perfectly in Word. The technical writing I'm doing now requires either the company's home-grown editing suite or plain text. I distribute articles and other collateral produced for pay with Acrobat PDF files (exported from Pages). I have no need of Word. Re: OT Mac migration application
Dave, you can run Migration Assistant later on if you like. It's in /Applications/Utilities . PS CS1 should run on your newer Intel Mac OS X, but it will run under emulation (called Rosetta) so it's a bit sluggish. OTOH, your new Mac will fly compared to your older iBook so the net result should be faster PS. If you have Mac OS X 10.6 (aka Snow Leopard) installed, you may have to install Rosetta as its an optional component during installation of the OS. It will be found on the OS DVD. -bmw On 10-12-31 8:40 AM, David J Brooks wrote: Paul. -should the iBook be plugged in prior to the iMac start up or does it matter. -Is this a one time thing, or can i do it anytime. -Any idea if PSCS will work on the newest Mac OS's. The iMac will ask you on startup if you want to do a migration. You can use the firewire or a wireless network, but the firewire is highly recommended. OT Mac migration application
Happy New Year all. Looks like my iMac will be ordered in a day or so with projected delivery on the week of the 7th. I have been told by a friend of mine, who has a graphics business and uses Mac, as well as 1-2 lister, that i will be able to hook up my iBook to the new iMac and transfer files and programs over. My friend tells me to hook up at start up of the iMac but what I see on the Apple site it does not suggest that. I know i need a firewire adaptor from 400 to 800 but what are the thoughts on migration. I don't want to screw this up. Hopefully programs like PSCS1 and Toast 6 will run on the new OS.
