Hi Frank.
Now that i have been able to view the cropped and uncropped versions,i think,to me
anyway,the
uncropped is the better. The cropped one seemed to be to muchinyour face were as the
uncropped
seems farther back and gives a more subtle motion to it.

I find tilting morally reprehensible. If I have 'issues about cropping,
then I have to say that tilting is just plain wrong.

That being said, your treatment improves the image immensely, Jostein!
vbg

Huge difference. The tilt just makes the picture sing. Kind of like what
Boris said, in a way.

Thanks for the help, Jostein!! I appreciate it.

Frank,

As usual, I am going to be honest here...

The elements are here. The car, the motion blur, the tones... But it
does not click together in my head/eye/mind/etc...

May be it is too tight or may be the pattern on the bottom left
contradicts the overall direction of motion... I don't know. I cannot
put my finger at something that does not work for me...

Sorry, if I don't make much sense here...

Hi, Boris,

Thanks for your candor, and your thoughtful comments.

If everyone liked the same stuff, it wouldn't be a very interesting world,
would it? Besides, I know you didn't say you didn't like it, just that it
didn't work for you. I know what you mean. Sometimes it's hard to
articulate something emotional, or how something makes us feel.

I would have preferred the crop to be not so tight, too. But, I didn't have
much space below the bike to work with. On the neg, the bike is dead
centre, which I didn't like, so I took out dead space on the right to make
it more pleasing to my eye, but to me it's still not perfect.

Here's the full frame:

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2241649

If you want to take a shot at cropping it, go ahead. Same thing for
everyone else. Sort of a mini-WOW. I'd be interested to see what other
people come up with. I don't think I'm very good at it, myself - I do try
to crop in the viewfinder, and I think I'm not bad at that, but if I'm
forced to do it after the fact, I always have misgivings.

Thanks again for your comments, Boris. I'm always very interested to hear
what you say.

cheers,
frank

I can relate to your reluctance to crop after the fact...

Nonetheless, the uncropped image is much better than the tight one.

I don't think that I have a crop of my own though comparing directly
the Jostein's version and the original uncropped one it clicked in my
head.

You know, among other things I am reading a book about NLP g...

Now, the original makes it look like the guy is driving uphill. The
car is behind him. The uphill is of course difficult and the backpack
on his back is pulling him backwards... So, everything is not easy.

Now, Jostein-the-wise g turned it a little so that now he is rolling
just a little tiny bit downhill. And now everything is cool. The guy's

Frank, you should bill yourself as the Master of the Creative Blur, this
evokes a feeling of movement and speed. I like it and I don't
care what anyone else says.

I like the perspective and framing, and the tonality is more
than OK. Yeah, very nice.
BTW, were you aware that your lens filter was smeared.
Fried chicken grease?
Well, it gives a nice sense of motion, iac.

Re: PAW #7 - Courier Bph

2004-03-26 Thread frank theriault
Thanks, Steve,

Like you, I thought of the aspect ratio. For that reason I did try cropping
a bit off the top, but it didn't look right to me. The bike didn't have
enough room in the frame. It dominated too much, and that's not what I
wanted.

If I had to shoot it over? Well, I've shot that shot lots of times already!
This one is the one I've been most satisfied with.

How would I change it? I'd like the bike to have a bit more room below it.
I'd like a bit more car in the frame. Even better, I'd like the car closer
to the cyclist. Or maybe more cars in the frame. I'd like the cyclist to
be looking straight ahead, or at the camera, or at least be able to see his
face. I'd like the cyclist's head to be the sharpest part of the image, not
his courier bag as is the case now.

I'll keep shooting these guys and girls as they go by, and we'll see what
comes of it.

I haven't taken many bike portraits lately - shots of bike owners standing
next to their steeds. Must concentrate on that tomorrow. It's supposed to
be sunny and mild (+10C), so it should be a good day for it.

Thanks again,
frank

That's cool. It's very Frank :-) If it were mine, I'd crop off the top a
bit, but that's probably my aspect-ratio issues getting the better of me.
;-) If you were shooting it again, how would you do it differently?

2004-03-26 Thread frank theriault
As you know, Peter, I was just joking with Shel. It's not chicken grease on
the lens causing that darned blur, it's those damned slow shutter speeds.

What I'm going to do in the future, is shoot that one with Neopan 1600,
pushed one stop. That way if I open up the aperture a bit, I should be able
to shoot at around 1/500, and ~freeze~ the action a bit! vbg I'd like to
try fill flash with rear curtain synch (is that what it's called?) but I
don't think my Leica will do that. g
