PESO - Three

2009-03-25 Thread frank theriault
Which is half of six:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/three.html

I showed these two (who I now know to be Earl and White Feather) a
while ago, but now I like this one a bit better. I like that one can
see (for instance) the fact that White Feather is sitting in her
walker, and one can see a scratch on Earl's nose a bit better in this
one. Not that I want his nose to be scratched, but it's what was
there that day.

For reference, here's the "original":

http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2009/02/six.html

If you have a preference, I'd be interested to know which you might
prefer. Comments on Three are most appreciated.

cheers,
frank

Six of one and half a dozen of the other.

I prefer Three by a long way - the composition is better, it's clearer, the
people look less like caricatures - there's more dignity about it. In Six it
looks as though he's gurning.

It is much more natural this way.

Tough decision. I like the latter one of his face and body, but his
arm leads out of frame and is distracting. And her expression is more
muted. And it is showing only three.

The earlier one his arm is better positioned, and his face has more

PESO - Three Tracks

2009-04-02 Thread Eactivist
Also shot at the Duck Club.

This is what you see looking the other direction when no train is there --
the "moth ball fleet." Ships, believe it or not, left over from WWII. They
were parked there and left to rot. Used to be a lot more when I was a kid
(rows
and rows). Over time they were taken apart for the metal and started to
disappear.

Then about 10 years ago concerns were raised about all the rust and that
demolishing them was polluting the water even more than just letting them sit.
So they stopped.

However, recently they got approval to start taking them apart again.
Evidentially they came up with new and better ways to do it and it was
approved.

So they are disappearing again, and I suppose, one day may no longer be
there.

Well, all that is just back story.

Wandering around through the archives, I came across this one from 2006.

I've always liked the symmetry of the old gate posts here with the three
trees behind. At the time I was playing around with an old Mayer-Optik

cheaply on EBay (not sure why I bought the Praktica but I liked the way
the lens handled this scene.)

PESO -- Three Egrets

2007-08-12 Thread P. J. Alling
I decided to drag my Vivitar solid cat out for some big bird shots.
Unfortunately the big birds weren't cooperating. The only ones I saw
were a couple of Cormorants, (not all that big and this group of
Egrets). They took off just after this and flew into full sunlight. In
those exposures they were totally blown out, (got to work on exposure
compensation some more),. As a second aside, the solid cat is pretty
good, but I really need a stove pipe for a hood when I use it on an
digital body.

PESO Three Amigos

2013-07-02 Thread Bruce Walker
Had a really fun practice shoot this past Sunday evening with my wife
and our artist friends, very informal and arranged so I could get some
air time with location lighting gear.

I'm newly enabled with a Westcott Apollo Medium (28") softbox, picked
up Saturday, and I can now heartily endorse that kit after two
two-hour shoots and various playing about in my office studio. It
folds and mounts like an umbrella, is very light weight, and is an
amazingly efficient light source. It does act like a sail though and
very nearly blew over despite a 20 or 30 pound weight on its stand. I
need to refine my sandbagging technique.

I concentrated on individual portraiture with varying mixes of ambient
light, but I also did a few quick (meaning not well posed) group shots
just to see how that'd work. This one really grabbed me ...

Hi Paul,

I like this shot, even though it's somewhat of an awkward pose. It looks
very real and homey, if you know what I mean.

The pic looks a bit flat here. Try duplicating the layer, set the duped
layer to luminosity, use USM set amount to 15%, radius to 250, and
threshold to 0, and see if the slight boost in contrast looks a little
better to you.

Others have posted their own shots of this guy. It might be interesting to
see everyone's interpretations together in one gallery. I wish I'd shot
more of him.

Someone else posted a shot of this ally. This is my interpretation.

Oddly enough, these photos are from my 6x7. I've got tons of digital stuff,
but haven't really bothered to mess with them yet. It's as if I don't take
digital seriously anymore when compared to what I get out of medium format.

Beautiful shot. I wouldn't change the composition or cropping at all. The
only change I might consider would be brightening the left-hand distant clump
of trees a bit, so that it looks less like a giant cow patty.

Wow! Great shot!

The pines definitely ~need~ to be there. Terrific light!

Re: PESO - Three Pines

2008-12-31 Thread Bruce Dayton
Well, without the trees, the sky would be way overpowering. It might
have been nicer to have fewer trees, as this feels much more
minimalist. But the choice between no trees or these trees, I would
go with the trees. I agree with Ken, that the sky is still pretty
strong. Cropping it down a bit might help.

Nice shot, otherwise.

RE: PESO - Three Pines

2009-01-01 Thread Brian Walters
Thanks for all of the comments on this - much appreciated.

Some specific replies..

Bob W said: "Bit of a Michael Busselle in Tuscany influence going on
there."

Thanks - I have a couple of Busselle's books. I like his work.

Ken, Frank, Christine and Bruce suggested that the sky be cropped -
about half of the sky above the tallest tree.

I hadn't considered that. It does seem to improve the composition
without losing any of the slanting clouds. Thanks for the suggestion.

Subash, Ann, Bruce, Marnie and Dave commented on my statement that I
wasn't sure "if the Norfolk Island Pines add to or detract from the
composition" and indicated that the trees added to the composition of
the image.

I didn't express myself very well. I should have said "the arrangement
of the Norfolk Island Pines"

I didn't mean to suggest that the image would be better without them. I
was just wondering whether a different shooting position, that made the
left hand pine less central in the image and clumped the three trees
closer together, would have resulted in a better composition.

Rick suggested (and Marnie and Luiz agreed) that the left-hand distant
clump of trees be brightened a bit, "so that it looks less like a giant
cow patty"

Hmmm - that would be one very large cow Point accepted, however!

The original works the best for me. Version b just has the sign hanging

I can't help thinking "You have a fleet of rusting ships over there, and
you've photographed the road sign - why?". The sign dominates both pictures,
and the ships would be unnoticeable if you hadn't pointed them out. They
must be what interests you, otherwise your email would be about the road
sign, not the ships, so I have to say, I don't understand why you have taken
these pictures. You need to get close to the ships, they are fascinating and
could make a superb photo essay, somewhat along the lines of Salgado's
famous essay about the ship scrapyards in the Bay of Bengal.

I might, someday, although actually they are very hard to get close to. Very
hard. No permitted access. They are in the straights much, much further away

And, no, I am not interested in the ships that much. I am more interested in
the trains and tracks. I just liked the juxtaposition of duck marsh, train

I prefer the closer crop.

However, I'm not entirely sure it works. It's well composed and the
light is good but the problem (for me) is that the sign doesn't have any
relationship with the rest of the scene.

I'm not sure where Hunter's point came in. The Glomar was parked in
the Mothball fleet for many years, until it was scrapped. The Glomar,
in itself is an interesting story.

My friend, Charlie Stross, wrote a book called "The Jennifer Morgue"
that the Glomar plays a part in. I hadn't realized where the name came
from until I read that article about "Project Jennifer".

Okay, rerread article, well rescanned. It was taken to Hunter's Point for
modifications. That's where I got that from.

You're right it was mothballed with the others.

According to article the mothball fleet is the Naval Reserve Fleet in Suisun
Bay (i.e. not a shipyard per se). Reserve, heh. Very, very, very reserve.

Well, your sig got it right.

The Glomar Explorer hasn't been scrapped. Still active on the USN ship
list: USNS Glomar Explorer (T-AG-193)

Currently on lease to GlobalSantaFe Corporation as a dynamically
positioned deep sea drilling platform operating as the GSF Explorer.

Originally leased in 1997 to Global Marine Drilling which merged with
Santa Fe International Corporation in 2001 to become GlobalSantaFe
Corporation, which then merged with Transocean in November 2007.

There's a starkness and simplicity about this one that I love. The
bare trees, old gate posts and low winter light contribute to this
starkness, I suppose, as do the hills in the distance, but your
composition is what makes this.

It just has this feel to it that "civilization was here once, but now
it's gone".

Love it.

G'day all

Wandering around through the archives, I came across this one from 2006.

I've always liked the symmetry of the old gate posts here with the three
trees behind. At the time I was playing around with an old Mayer-Optik
Oreston 1:1.8 50 mm that had come attached to a Praktica I picked up
cheaply on EBay (not sure why I bought the Praktica but I liked the way
the lens handled this scene.)

Excellent shot! The lighting is wonderful, and the irregularity of the trees
breaks up the symmetry of the composition nicely.

Nice one, Shel!

Love the way two are pecking, with their heads down, and one with the head up.

Terrific (and appropriate for the day) shot!

Unfortunately, I was driving at the time.

Brave beasts.

I had my first ever Thanskgiving today, went out for dinner with an
American friend and a few others. All the places that served the full
Turkey experience were booked weeks ago, apparently, so we went to a
diner and had burgers and malts. Good fun.
