Could be. But someone would have to make an APS-C sensor that didn't
need any mechanical shutter. Does any such animal exist?

Ah, never mind. It's a mockup from 1997. I should have read the text:

a 'headless' K mount body with no viewfinder and a live view LCD."

Interesting.

I'm trying to get a real life look at the camera. My dealer told me
yesterday that the rep isn't expecting the camera much before mid
November now.
This may mean that some other market is being used for beta testing this
time, so it may be alright.

Pretty much, although some companies don't announce things the first
day. If you go to that site daily, you can read that day's news.
What you see on the site is the daily newspaper Cygnus publishes and
distributes for free at photokina. Today's edition, the first one,
is made up mostly from pre-release announcements. Tomorrow's may be
more interesting.

Old news - this was first announced (and discussed) several days ago.
You might check the archives before posting these "announcements".

Was reading about this one on DPReview. It looks quite good. Fuji's

Why I would need a camera to detect faces remains a question mark for
me. On the other hand, I'm very happy with the Fuji F30 as a
pocketable digicam with decent sensitivity and image quality. I hate

Youknows, or youhopes? I read strong claims that Pentax will release
a
Samsungnised DS/DL replacement at PMA, and that the -D replacement
would
have to wait until Photokina in September...

Interesting question. Possibly some announcements but nothing yet in
mock-up stage, would be my guess. We can be certain of a couple of
things: Neither Pentax nor Samsung rushed into their business
arrangement. And Samsung must have had a sensor and perhaps some other
technology almost ready to go when they started inquiring about a
partnership.
Samsung is big leagues and they're accustomed to very short
design-to-production cycles. It wouldn't surprise me if we saw nothing
at all at PMA in February and then had working prototypes at Photokina
in September.

Probably the same or just a few less, Pentax don't compress the RAW files plus
in all their wisdom they pad the 12 bits per pixel to 16 bits. If you check out

The baby DSLR is a safe bet and rumors say something is happening in the lens

Otherwise one can hope for that Pentax will show their 645 based DSLR although it is
perhaps more likely for PMA in february next year.

This ain't gonna happen in 100 years, but I wish Pentax brings a
rangefinder camera with exchangeable lens mount. How about
starting with the three limited edition lenses? Wait, the 43mm
already comes with the LTM mount, doesn't it? It will be fun to
have a rangefinder with three built-in frames, 31, 43 and 77,
maybe adding 92 and 129 later:-)

It's a little more complicated than this I suspect, for instance the sensor
in
the Kodak 14n was spec'd by Kodak, designed by FillFacory (Belgium) and
fabricated at X-FAB (Plymouth -UK).

http://www.fillfactory.com/htm/news/news.htm
http://www.xfab.com/xfab/frontend/index.php4

So making your own sensor doesn't necessarily mean importing designers or
building a fab plant.

Mitsubishi fabs alpha processors. They were one of the outsources that the US
government insisted upon before the breakup of DEC. Intel and Samsung were the
others. Intel loved it they actually got the DEC fab and the use of alpha
technology which allowed their current processors to be made. I have not been
keeping up with this stuff, so do not know what is in the works for the next
generation which should be beyond the old DEC technology.

The fact they chose to sell not quite junk consumer stuff under their name does
not mean they do not have the capabiliy to produce highend electronics. After
all they are (or at least were) the largest conglomerate in Japan.

Pentax is missing a 6-8 MP gun shaped pro-sumer DSLR with a fixed zoom lens.
Most other brands offer such a camera (Nikon, Minolta, Olympus etc.). This
seems to me to be the right step for Pentax, who will not really compete on
high end/pro DSRL market, which requires a whole new camera/lens line up
(like Olympus E-1). I'm actually suprised Pentax didn't make this instead of
the *ist D. But I guess maybe they targeted the *ist D at the many owners of
35mm Pentax lenses. My bet is that's what we'll se from Pentax at Photokina.
I don't really believe in a new full frame 8-14MP Pentax DSLR - it appears
to be years too late.

A DMZ-S would still be nice, though. Or they could buy a camera body from
someone else (Epson, HP?) and concentrate on what they are really good at -
lens making and reseach/developing (I recall someone said Pentax owns
patents for IS-tecnology).

Unfortunatley, I think most of Pentax's customers are the "Give me what
I can have for under $2000." vairety. I would be very surprised to see
Pentax release a $5000 DSLR, unless it were somehow aimed at their MF
market.

OTOH, 10 MP might be no big deal in a short time, although the FF
sensor might be. I have a feeling that the APS sensor might be here for
along time. I think more folks want teles not WA's so the FF sensor
is not a big point for them.

This is the key point. Since Pentax doesn't make chips, they will sell
what's available. They'll have a 10 MP FF snesor when everyone else
does. If you want chip innovaiton, you'll have to switch to Canon.
Even if Nikon does start to make their own sensors (there is a rumor
