But I prefered not to, because too many people who think of themselves as photographers are anything but, having only a pocket full of bad habits and an indifferent attitude toward learning useful techniques. It was usually too difficult and time-consuming to retrain the bad habits out of them, but sometimes it was worth it, if I could see some willingness to accept instruction. I think you're both missing a couple of key points. 1. This company essentially has a monopoly dealing with school SYSTEMS & the in-store studios. My only alternative is to set up my own studio as an independent, with all the investment involved in order to compete with an established franchise. Note, I'm talking school SYSTEMS - 156 public schools under one contract in just one county. And likely an equal number of private schools, although they're not consolidated under one contract. That's at the low dollar end, where that original "Portrait software" would let you make those annual "school photo" packages. I can also attempt to break into the market against the established high end independents, but that's a different thread - "seniors" is more akin to wedding photography; in fact, it's kind of the intro to wedding photography, because that's who they're going to think of first when it's time to start looking; whoever took their "seniors". So, anyway, there's pretty low probability I'm going to break into the annual school photo market with my two camera bodies, various equipment and $90 software package for creating various photo packages. And as to working for the franchise ... 2. There simply is no retraining involved. Period. I already understand the fundamentals; they only have to tell me once "this is how we do it", and I would do it THAT WAY - no argument. But their company policy is not to even consider me. So I'm back to square one. I did get an answer back from the six-pack photo or whoever it was ... on saving the layouts. The template basically creates an Internet Explorer web-page you can export to the printer, but after you've dropped the images into the template, you can save the finished layout as an MS Word document with embedded images. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

William Robb Speaking as veteran of the portrait mills, and a guy who used to make his living training these people, I did hire "photographers." But I prefered not to, because too many people who think of themselves as photographers are anything but, having only a pocket full of bad habits and an indifferent attitude toward learning useful techniques. It was usually too difficult and time-consuming to retrain the bad habits out of them, but sometimes it was worth it, if I could see some willingness to accept instruction. It's not just the volume people who have this attitude; I applied at a couple independent studios back in the day, and was given the same line, that they only hired people who knew nothing about photography so they wouldn't have to deal with all the retraining. I know it's very fashionable to mock the volume photo people, and like any other industry it has its faults, but it's also a great way to get a solid grounding in the basics of studio photography, not to mention having access to piles of equipment that you don't have to go out and purchase yourself, and if you are motivated enough to grasp the fundamentals and apply them, you can create some truly exceptional work. But only if you have the balls to stand up to a parade of toddlers and their mothers/grandmothers. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Seriously, these places aren't in the business of churning out high art, they really are there for the people who are in the market for what they are selling. In order for them to be able to do what they do, every studio needs to be as close to the same as possible with regards to lighing intensity and ratio. This is the photographic equivalent of flipping burgers at McDonald's, and the reasons for them doing what they do are exactly the same as the reasons for why McD does it the way they do. It's all about consistency of product. William Robb I understand their business model, and with my experience, there's no problem doing it their way ... there's no need for them to explain it, just tell me how far you want the light & what power setting you want me to use. It's not rocket surgery - put this light over here 10' away at full power using this soft box, that light at 12' 2/3 power, put the stool 8 feet in front of the backdrop, use this camera, that f/stop, at whatever shutter speed. Boom, boom, boom ... all done; "How about some additional 5x7 prints? They'd make a lovely gift for the grandparents." Upselling. I understand it. I can follow the script. BTDT - GTTS. They provide the equipment; they only have to tell me once how they want me to shoot it. I understand what they want me to do, and I can do it faster and churn out higher production than that untrained kid. No problem. And, I'm willing to work for what they claim to be paying (at least in the portrait studio). And, I'm more likely to show up for work every day. BUT ... they *DO NOT* hire photographers. Experience is a disqualification. From: "Jens" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thanks again, John, Cotty and others. I played around with the Pickture Package thing in Photoshop CS (7) and found out: 1. I can make a Picture Pacage from all images in an image folder automatically. 2. I can change/customize the layout I wnat to use (combination of image sizes in each package). This is actually what I want. And I think it works great. My only concern is, that the final package sizes seem to be unchangeable (?). That's a pity, since I want to use the very same paper sizes, that my photo dealer offers. I'll get my new EPSON printer next week (just a small, cheep one). Perhaps I can find the rigt sizes for this. The Photoshop tutorial that led me to Picture Packages was on how to create additional custom packages if the default ones wouldn't fit what you needed. The package layouts are stored in text files. RE: Portrait software
Actually that's not true. You can change the paper size as well as the sizes, position etc of each simgle image in the package. You can even add text, copyright information etc. I't sreally a very versatile tool. Regards Jens Thanks again, John, Cotty and others. Regards Jens Thanks John, Great tip. I used your search and found this: http://www.pixalo.com/articles/Using-automated-picture-package-in-Photoshop.php I'm sure there's a lot more somewhere. :-) Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. Re: Re: RE: Portrait software
Hello again I should also mention, that I found software, that can make templates for printing and publishing images in a package. It's called PrintSix. It's not very expensive (60-160 USD) and comes in different versions. http://www.sixdigitalphotos.com/templates.htm Unfortunately I don't think this software can save your work as one JPG or TIF file for later use. - Original Message - From: "John Sessoms" Subject: RE: Portrait software I'm pretty sure you can set up an action in PhotoShop that will do that; replicate the photo several times on a single sheet. I had a class on how to do it once, but I've forgotten how since I haven't used it. In fact, I did a quick web search and found a tutorial that pointed me toward Photoshop>File>Automate>Picture Package and there's pre-defined packages in there. Someplace around here I have the Photoshop actions that I wrote for our school photography for last year. Everything from one 8x10 to 16 subwallets on an 8x10 sheet. You just put the files you want actioed into a directory, tell it to run that directory and walk away. The computer sits there quietly making packages. The File>Automate>Picture Package is also vary elastic, and can be told to do many wonderful things, including partake in actions. Re: Portrait software
Too bad you're on Capture 1. Lightroom does a really good job of this. Much easier to use than the Photoshop tools. I think CS supports the Picture Package automation, I know CS2 does and CS3.
