Since several list members are steering you toward a 135, in that focal length I recommend a Vivitar Close Focus: 17 ounces, 3.5 inches long, 62mm filter), will shoot 1:2 at 20 inches. Very solid, built in the 70s. Another good candidate: Sears Macro. Tom Wannenburg wrote: It is quite good for the price. My focus ring wobbles a little but it is otherwise solid. As a macro it is so - so, you need to stop down. It is quite sharp and very nice for portraits in the non - - macro range even wide open. One thing, you cannot use it on a ZX5n, or probably any of the new autofocus bodies: There is a screw that gets stuck in the AF drive hole. It works great on my Program Plus though. Re: Advice Needed For Student
Hi Ed ... From the replies I've read everyone seems to be suggesting another lens of one sort or another. I'd suggest not getting another lens, at least right away. One suggestion that's often made when it comes to learning about photography is to learn to use one lens well, to be able to exploit it's character and focal length to the fullest capacity. The 50mm is a great starter lens, and many wonderful photos can be made using just it. I'd suggest that she stay with the 28mm/50mm combination for a while, see how she develops creatively, and let her decide what she wants as the next lens. She may decide she wants to go with a wide lens, or a longer lens than something in the 85mm - 135mm range. That said, if you feel you must get her another lens, I'd suggest something like the 100mm /2.8, and to stick with a Pentax lens. First, all the lenses would operate the same way, they'd turn in the same direction for focusing, and have similar feel to them. Let her concentrate on photography rather than the mechanics of the lenses. The Pentax 100/2.8 is also relatively small and light, which makes for a better, easier handling package on the camera she has. Some of the other lenses mentioned are bigger and heavier, and even the Pentax 135mm is starting to get a little bulky. I'd not suggest a zoom at all. What is it with these people who say they should have bought a second hand K100 or a Spotmatic? Good grief. Party poopers. I know what I'd rather have. Sounds like an excellent starting kit. I'd like to second the suggestions for a 135mm. I only have experience with the M-series 135/3.5 but I think it would fit nicely with the camera, gives good results, nice and compact and could be got for a song. Also there is the 75-150 (again, M-series, I don't have much experience with A lenses) which might be worth considering. Sorry, not selling mine I'm afraid. Re: Advice Needed For Student
I recently started with photography... I bought a Spotmatic in excellent condition and three lenses: 28mm, 50mm and 90-190mm... I've really enjoyed shooting with all of them and learned from using all three lenses. My best shots have come from the normal and the 28mm. I think the fact of using a fully manual camera has taught me a lot about light, exposure and depth of field (I definitely would agree about the K1000). About the lens... it depends on her interests. If she likes to shoot people (I do), she'll enjoy a zoom... I've also felt the need of a macro, but it can be worked out with close-up filters. In conclusion, if you have the money, get her a good zoom lens... 130mm is a little short for my personal needs... maybe an 80-200mm would work fine. Ed - My NSHO: 1. If you get two lenses, I would go a. 50/1.4 or 1.7 b. 100/2.8 3. If you go to three lenses, I would go: a. 50/1.4 or 1.7 b1. 100/2.8 b2. 100/4.0 macro b3. 135/3.5 c. 35/3.5 or, maybe, a 28/whatever In other words, I would go longer with the second lens rather than shorter, I would consider the very capable not too expensive 100/4 macro. And only then would I go wide, and even then I wouldn't go too wide. 35 is plenty. One additional thought. Buy one really well written book. Like one of the Shaw landscape or macro books. Or a well written book on lighting for portraiture . . . Something to stimulate the imagination and to start one thinking about the techniques of getting your vision onto film. Now that someone mentions books... I just bought a couple and I (as a total newbie in need of expanations) would recommend both... Les Meehan's Creative Exposure Control Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure. I've had trouble with exposure and these two have certainly helped a lot. The first one has a really good approach to understanding the zone system... very clear and with excellent tips on callibrating the meter, the film, the developing process... it's somewhat more technical than the other, but very good. The second never mentions the zone system and the author is not a fan of handheld meters, but his ideas on getting correct exposures using the built in meters are excellent. He gives tips for all kinds of lighting situations, and excellent ideas on creative use of shutter speeds, appertures and film speeds. His explanations as clear as I could ever ask for. I'd say a good book is a great gift... always. Fernando, the newbie - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. I probably should have mentioned that I had the 50mm and 28mm in my backup bag so I didn't have to spend any additional cash. Lessons learned from this thread: 1. Don't involuntarily start a zoom vs. prime debate. (Though it is fun to read from the sidelines!) 2. Buy her film! Duh. 3. She is going to visit for a week late in the summer. (Just found that out.) I'll try to gauge her interest/progression then. 4. I had considered a used body but wanted her to have something new for her birthday. The ZX-M met the requirement nicely. 5. I think it was Fernando that recommended a good book/guide. Again, something we can do later this summer. 6. Someone commented about staying with the SMC-A lenses so they focus in the same direction. I had forgotten when I had my Super Program that I hardly used a non-Pentax lens that I had because it focused backwards. Good tip. 7. Another comment was made regarding letting her decide what, if any, next lens she'd like. Would she like a super wide-angle, macro, etc. I like that approach. This way she can follow her own path of discovery. 8. I was kind of surprised that nobody mentioned a flash. The one thing I think the ZX-M lacks is TTL flash. I almost went with a Super Program for this reason. Thank you one and all!
