I was just looking over some older posts and I noticed my PESO, At the
Outlet Mall.  I read the thread and I realize that, in my misguided
attempt to be funny I actually insulted my common law wife, Judy.

Calling her "the missus" is patronizing and demeaning.  I don't think
of her that way and it was wrong of me to refer to her that fashion.

Despite what I said in the thread, I quite enjoyed my day.  Although
outlet malls are scary places to be, we went at my behest not hers,
and I did indeed encourage to buy the bag I mentioned, not because I
was trying to appease or manipulate her, but because I really liked it
and knew she did too.

Although I was tired at the time I took the photo, the day was not one
of boredom; rather, I had fun despite the location. We always have fun
when we're with each other, no matter where we are.

I apologize publically to Judy and this list for saying those things
about her and our day.

cheers,
frank

In a local photo club we have done projections of both 35mm slides
(leica projector) and digital (Epson LCD) on the same canvas. What
strikes me as odd is that the perceived quality is higher for a
1024x768 pixel digital image than for a slide with much higher
resolution. It's simply a lot more pleasing to look at.

Granted, it was a PITA to get the colour adjustments right, but once
worked out the viewing experience was really stunning.

2005-01-30 Thread mike wilson
Stan Halpin wrote:
I did a slide show for family at Christmas time via the Sandisk viewer.
Not "straight from the camera"; rather, I assembled a set of images on
my computer, downloaded to a CF card and went from there.

Some observations:
1. The viewer has a slow processor. Smaller images process faster. Next
time I will downsize the images I use in such a show.
2. My computer stored the files in Name order on the CF card. I could
have forced a Date order but that would have been a mishmash because the
"date" on the files is when they are created on the card, the original
creation date isn't inherited. In either case, you have a linear show,
no easy capability to sort like images together.
3. I tried to solve the linearity problem by creating a series of
folders. I hoped that the viewer would progress folder-by-folder (with
linearity within folders). Instead it pulled the top image from each
folder in succession, then the second image from each folder, etc.

Conclusion: if you want to use the Sandisk as an alternative for a slide
projector, and you are used to sorting your slides into a story line
which is not the same as the order of image capture and you want to
control the duration of viewing for an individual image from very brief
to longer times, then:
- reduce the file sizes
- rename all of the images using a sequence number reflecting the
desired ordering of images.
Mine had an intersting foible: if you were looking at a preview page of
images, there was one large image in the top left corner, surrounded by
about 8 smaller images on the right and bottom sides. A
poorly-highlighted box showed which of the images was being "viewed" at
larger size. Once you got to the last of the images, another screenfull
(screenful? screen full?) loaded. Which took ages. Most irritating.

I was using full size images, fresh from the camera. Smaller ones would
speed up loading for sure. Wonder how the "quality" fares when you do that?

It's no alternative for a slide projector...

Re: Apology and review (of Sandisk photoviewer).

2005-01-30 Thread Stan Halpin
I did a slide show for family at Christmas time via the Sandisk viewer.
Not "straight from the camera"; rather, I assembled a set of images on
my computer, downloaded to a CF card and went from there.

Some observations:
1. The viewer has a slow processor. Smaller images process faster. Next
time I will downsize the images I use in such a show.
2. My computer stored the files in Name order on the CF card. I could
have forced a Date order but that would have been a mishmash because
the "date" on the files is when they are created on the card, the
original creation date isn't inherited. In either case, you have a
linear show, no easy capability to sort like images together.
3. I tried to solve the linearity problem by creating a series of
folders. I hoped that the viewer would progress folder-by-folder (with
linearity within folders). Instead it pulled the top image from each
folder in succession, then the second image from each folder, etc.

Conclusion: if you want to use the Sandisk as an alternative for a
slide projector, and you are used to sorting your slides into a story
line which is not the same as the order of image capture and you want
to control the duration of viewing for an individual image from very
brief to longer times, then:
- reduce the file sizes
- rename all of the images using a sequence number reflecting the
desired ordering of images.

Note that I have not commented on image quality. Those interested in
quality projection are encouraged to explore something called "film".
Certain films are suited for projection via a process that involves
shining a light through the film onto a piece of stretched material
called a "screen." Check the oldies-but-goodies section of your local
store.

Hi Stan,
"Re" is a preposition, just as "to," "from" and "with" are.
Which is to say, it's a stand-alone word, not an abbreviation.
It means "concerning," "in reference to" or "in the case of."
It comes from (is an ablative of) the Latin word "res" which means "thing."
With regard to usage, would you put a colon after "concerning?" I
wouldn't, but that does seem to be how common usage has presented it...
Since it is a preposition, I'd use it bare, as it was originally
intended: "Re your letter of the 5th..." No colon.

well, not quite. 're' is Latin for 'about' and is a complete word in

Placing 're' in the subject line for replies is an unfortunate
grammatical error that has been cast in digital concrete.

Bob,

Yes, indeed. I had forgotten all about that, but your
little rambling must have fired off a few dusty,
little used lately, neurons in my brain.

Reference cases (that would be, IIRC, cases that
aren't necessarily adversarial, but ask the court a
question on a point of law), are prefaced in the court
reports with in re.

So, rather than a case being named "Cottrell vs.
Metamoros", a reference case may be called "In re:
Halpin".

Ah, memories...

cheers,

Bob, On this side of the pond, using what is oxymoronically known as
American English, there is a businesspersons' phrase which is used as
follows: "Dear Mr. Jones: In re: your letter of the 5th,..." with the
apparent presumption being that 're' is short for 'reference'. I have

Could it be that 're:' is in fact proper usage, that it is a shorthand
reference to 'reference'?

'in re' is Latin meaning 'in the matter of'. It is a rather fusty,
legalistic term - it cam into general use from the law. I personally
would discourage it. It serves no useful purpose and just sounds archaic
and bureaucratic, if not pompous.

For Sale (and Want To Buy): Pentax stuff anytime. Although many only

well.

Ebay: It is all right to mention things "YOU" have up for sale. Do not
mention other stuff until it is over. An exception is obviously funny
and BS stuff like the 11 million dollar Canon 1Ds digitals, or
non-photographic stuff like the wedding dress that was the basis of a
long thread here a while back/

Politics/Religion: Since some of us, me up toward the top of the list,
can not seem to remain civil in these kinds of discussions we very
much prefer not to have threads about them on the list. This is
violated often, until someone goes off the deep end and then most of
us shut up.

Guns/Cat Photos: A former popular list participant swore he would
leave the list if anyone mentioned them. He left anyway which shows
that you might as will ignore such stuff. However, many consider
Guns/Abortion/Etc as part of Politics and Religion, so generally they
should be avoided. Although Cat Photos are now seemingly OK again.

Flames/Trolls: People who can not keep from continually attacking
others, or who insist on trying to incite folks to anger should be
totally ignored, these are the only folks I filter out of my mail
stream, and I would suggest everyone else do the same. For they will,
if they have their way, destroy the nicest mailing list on the
Internet. Note: losing your cool now and then is not the same thing at
all, or I would have to killfile my own posts (embarrassed grin).

PAW-- Photo A Week (also PESO-- Photo Every So Often), a thing
introduced to the list a while back by Shel Belinkof where you can put
up a photo you want commented on and folks will tell you how you
should have done it (grin).

WOW-- Work Over a Week, similar to the above where you post a photo
somewhere that folks can download it, and they run it through Photo
Shop or whatever to show you how they would have done it. Seems like a
good learning tool, but I have not seen any lately.

Those are the only ones I can think of that have mass general
agreement, though common courtesy is always appreciated here. Some
folks do not like the off topic stuff, but we who engage in it are
usually the old timers here, and are not going to pay much attention
to them (grin).

99.9% of the people on this list are great wonderful terrific (add 16
more superlatives of your choice here) people who anyone would be glad
to have as friends. I especially know this because many have gone out
of their way to help me from time to time.

We talk about doing this about twice a year, but it never seems to go
very far. So, if anyone has additions, changes, or corrections let me
know and I will edit this and put it up somewhere it can be accessed
at anytime.

We talk about doing this about twice a year, but it never seems to go
very far. So, if anyone has additions, changes, or corrections let me

well, not quite. 're' is Latin for 'about' and is a complete word in

Placing 're' in the subject line for replies is an unfortunate

Thanks guys, I think this'll help.
So far I've felt pretty welcome, only been snapped at a couple of times. (My
ex would be amazed!)
The times I got rebuked it was because I engaged my mouth (OK, Send button)
before my brain.
I'm really trying to get back into the craft and it's been quite a while,
need all the help I can get.
I figure staying on peoples good side is better for everybody.

One note the FAQ might have is: "Remember that the people here are from all
over the world.
Customs, languages, beliefs, religions, values and most of all their SENSE
OF HUMOR may vary!"

In the short time I've been here I've decided:
1.) To stay with film for a while.
2.) Worry more about the photo than how "fancy" the gear is.
3.) I need to go shoot some B&W again.
4.) In direct contradiction to #2, I need a better scanner!
5.) DOF is in the eye of the beholder.

The best saying I've picked up: "It's all about the image."

And I'm glad cat pics are OK again, my Bassett Hound is tired of having his
picture taken.
He's figured out that licking the lens puts a quick stop to it.
Biting the photographer works too!

Thanks All

Well, seriously, Tom, that's a pretty good, relatively
comprehensive (without being heavyhanded or overly
longish) PDMLFAQ you've got there.

You were right in your intro: it's all common sense,
really, isn't it?

My only addendum (other that the "don't believe frank"
thing) is that I always thought that the prohibition
re: ongoing eBay auctions was for Pentax stuff, not
other photographic stuff. Except, as you said, joke
or novelty things, like that giant Pentax body and the
clear Pentax body (both promotional items).

Mind you, every time the eBay thing comes up, it turns
into a fairly contentious thing, so maybe I should
just leave well enough alone...

I'm not so sure I agree with that, after thinking about this post for a
while I started thinking about a Pentax K 28mm F3.5 for $22.50 'cause it was
mis-listed as an SLR, a like new *ist body for $105.00 in the wrong catagory
and several pieces found by creatively trying lots of different
mis-spellings (or alternate spellings such as ZX5N instead of with the
hyphen) for items.
I think deals can still be unearthed by those who spend A LOT of time
looking.
I know I'd be miffed if one of those hard found listings showed up here for
someone to grab out from under me without having worked for it. (Just my HO)

Now the question:
Nowhere can I find any guidelines covering this (eBay Listings), or for FS
items, or what's allowed for OT subjects, or for that matter what "AW"
stands for!
I am a newcomer to this list, but from experience I KNOW there are rules,
and do my best to figure 'em out.
But I am not going to lurk for 5 years just to do so, I'd rather be hollered
at than not participate.

SO hows about a little FAQ with dos and don'ts and definitions so us

I'm sure no one would get upset if the information was shared post auction. You
do have to consider that there are far more lurkers here than participants so
theoretically any particularly attractive auction could be introduced to
another 900+ potential bidders. If only one of these potentials bid then it
could mean you or whoever wishes to bid misses out. If you are the one who
misses out you might think the advice to refrain from posting live auctions is
reasonable?

I watch a lot of auctions, what are you after in particular, I'll let you know
on-list when one pops up if you wish?

Sorry to be so sarcastic in my delivery but surely you can see both sides of
the story, the question is which is most appealing to you and how many listers
do you want to get off side?

It's been a while since we've had apologies on this list. Good to see we're
back on the right track ;-)

PS. I'm glad the lens turned out OK. At $20 it's a steal.

Next time, stick to something less controversial like which flavor of
Christianity is best . . . 8^)

And right you are to apologize, Cotty. I was looking at Macs in Comp USA
down in Charlotte today. Obviously they are pop sculpture, not working
tools. Any worthwhile computer has to be in an ugly black (or at least
beige) box. Good lord, those apple people don't even know what a computer is
supposed to look like. How can one trust somebody like that? Now if I just
had room for one more tape drive with my system (see the movie Andromeda
Strain if you want to know what a computer is supposed to look like).

Folks, I am extremely sorry - please ignore a previous original post
under this title from me - it was aimed at a different email list, and
failed miserably as you have seen.

My apologies

Ah - Good :^)

IMHO, it is best to just let those occassional "hot" threads
die off naturally. By exercising restraint in responses they
generally fade away in a few days on their own unless there
is a "pile-on" reaction.

That's OK Mike. We are all probably just as sorry for bringing it up in the

Hey everybody,

I apologize for my intemperate post yesterday objecting to the "gun" thread
and threatening to leave. I should have thought that one over before hitting

Hey, don't sweat it, Mike. After all, when intemperate posts are outlawed,

No worries, Mike. It baffles me why a light hearted thread about the
Croc Hunter and his endorsement of the Pentax brand came to be used as a
soapbox by gun enthusiasts, who believe that our (Australia's)
government oppresses us by prohibiting the unjustified ownership of
killing implements.
