If anyone on this list plays Role Playing Games, they may know the
company Ross Talsorian Games. The owner was a buddy of mine in
college named Mike Smith. Mike is black, and in the late seventies,
and early 80's there weren't a lot of black guys in Davis.

At the time, Mike's daily driver was a beat up '65 'cuda we called
Mother Mopar. She was a bit long in the tooth, but there are some
amusing stories about other drivers being taught what 273 godfearing
American cubic inches could do.

As a black guy, in a mostly white college town, driving a beat up
older car, Mike got pulled over regularly for Driving While Black. On
at least two occasions he was subsequently arrested and taken to jail,
because someone typed in the wrong birthday when entering warrants for
another Mike Smith.

Shortly before Mike married his girlfriend, Lisa Pond, he changed his
name to Pondsmith. That helped with the misentered warrants. Since he
worked at the library for King law school, he bought a window sticker
for the law school and put it on the car. I don't think he was pulled
over for DWB in Davis after that. I guess that cops find harrassing
law students more trouble than it's worth.

One of the girls had the same birthday as my brother, but was born the

was born the same year that my brother was.

Really, folks, I should be blamed, as I believe I started this some months
ago, under extreme pressure from my various calendars and FaceBook, My

with colorful reminders regards anyone's birthday that may be coming up in
the next few days or weeks.

So I caved, and wished a few PDML'rs a happy, and others chimed in, and so
on. I've had to cut my birthday wishes down now to only pretty young female
relatives who frankly could give a good shit about their portly old uncle,
 thrice removed by marriage.

Try to be nice. Try to be friendly. Try to be social.
You will be dumped upon by the type 'A's...                        :-)

P.S.  I like Tom. I like astronomy. I even have great respect for Mark.
And a modicum of respect for everyone else who takes the time to be
 here.

P.P.S.  This does not, however, release any of you denisons of the US of A
from celebrating my birthday, this year, and every year, even after I'm long
gone to ash that you and yours will be inhaling and coughing from, as you
celebrate the Fourth of July (welling music here) and the birth of me.

(rough draft written with a Pentax pen prior to typing into my Mac as a

By the way, did any of you, as did I, have to try out a couple of Pentax

You could have at least said see Note:#3 Bob. It took a long time
to read all those formulæ. I did find a few errors. Didn't want to
take the time to provide citations however. For those still stuck in
the forest of formulæ, the note is:

In particular, many children are born in the summer, especially the
months of August and September (for the northern hemisphere), and in
the U.S. it has been noted that many children are conceived around the
holidays of Christmas and New Year's Day. Also, because hospitals
rarely schedule C-sections and induced labor on the weekend, more
Americans are born on Mondays and Tuesdays than on weekends.

I don't put a lot of emphasis on birthdays anymore, but I am
happy once a year to see that I've made it through to another one.

This one is special because I begin receiving my retired pay
from the Army National Guard and free health care from the VA.

That's great news - congratulations.

You all can say anything you like on the list, I've always been a
proponent of that.

However sometimes it can get a little silly. What if everytime
someone displayed a photo and it was commented on, they posted an
individual thank you to each and every person that made a comment?
That does happen sometimes. We can easily fill up bandwidth, both
electronic and human with relatively meaningless chatter that has
nothing to do with photography or is utterly trivial, and it can
become burdensome at times.

And no Jostein, as I said, my motivation wasn't to bring any one down.
I was simply feeling some frustration with the level of idle banter I
was having to handle.

Tom

Tom, I honestly don't understand what is wrong with Thank you emails
or Happy Birthday emails or Congratulations on your new
book/photograph/publication/price emails. Especially so given the
presence of the delete button.

It is however rather rude or impolite to express one's displeasure with
these messages as a response to someone's birthday greetings. In fact,
just as easily a new thread could have been started thereby keeping
birthday greetings to birthday greetings and (meta)discussion thereof to
the separate thread.

Chiming in a bit late, but Happy Birthday, Dave!

Is it Dave's birthday? Why didn't anyone mention it?

Probably everyone assumed, as did I, that Dave Brooks Day was just a
 traditional Canadian holiday.

Yes that is true, it usually falls a few days before our annual
Federal elections.

I could say more and just erased a bunch of blather which would make
