LOL! I wish I could compare myself to Capa. :)

If I could separate the focusing screen from the camera I would, but I
haven't been able to find the original screen. That, or I didn't figure out
how to reinstall it. Screens from the K5 and K10D seem just a bit smaller,
and yet I somehow cannot close the little tray with one of those in. So
it's the only screen I have for this camera.

Price went down today btw, although ebay seems saturated with KPs from
Japan at marginally lower prices right now.

Boris,

I think you want too much for the K-5. KEH.com has several in Ex or
better condition selling for less than $290.00 U.S. and they're giving

a

1 year guarantee, and free shipping, something I wouldn't expect you

to

do.

It's a sad fact that no matter how capable the camera or what condition
it's in, and how well built it is, in the new digital age, after a very
few years it's monetary value approaches zero.

In my humble opinion the capabilities of a K-5, is probably more than
most people really need to make outstanding photographs, and even $300.
is a steal for those capabilities, but the perception is that time has
passed it by.

Heck, just yesterday, I received a replacement K-5 II that I bought

from

KEH.com that cost me less than $270 including sales tax, that looks

like

it's brand new, and, if I can believe the file numbers exiftool gives
me, has slightly less than 2900 shutter actuations. The 1 year
guarantee alone is probably worth 25% of the purchase price.

Bottom line I just don't think you're going to be able to get that much
for yours. Even with the grip, and the other items. I wish that

weren't

true but that's just the way the world works these days.

Re: FS Friday

2018-12-14 Thread Boris Liberman
So, I gather, Paul, that I stand no chance. For some reason, I thought you
already sold your K-5...

I might as well, buy myself some cheap lens, zoom or prime and make it a
second backup camera, or give it to my daughter, or something.

Boris, I agree with Peter as to your asking price, at least here in the U S of
A.

I recently sold to KEH, a pristine K-10 with under 3 K shutter actuations, in
the original box with all that came in the box and no signs of usage at all -
they gave me $61 USD ! I had previously advertised it at $125 and got no
response. I only sold it to them cause I have another backup camera and wanted
to clear some things out.

Re: FS Friday

2018-12-14 Thread P. J. Alling

Boris,

I think you want too much for the K-5.  KEH.com has several in Ex or
better condition selling for less than $290.00 U.S. and they're giving a
1 year guarantee,  and free shipping, something I wouldn't expect you to

Heck, just yesterday, I received a replacement K-5 II that I bought from
KEH.com that cost me less than $270 including sales tax, that looks like
it's brand new, and, if I can believe the file numbers exiftool gives
me, has slightly less than 2900 shutter actuations.   The 1 year
guarantee alone is probably worth 25% of the purchase price.

Bottom line I just don't think you're going to be able to get that much
for yours.  Even with the grip, and the other items. I wish that weren't
true but that's just the way the world works these days.

I put such a card in my old (really old) Windows PC. Worked really well. I
tried Vuescan on my Mac but just couldn't get the colour rendering right. I
like the old Minolta software anyway.

I already have 35mm covered with a Nikon CoolscanIV for ED.

I would like to have one of the Nikon scanners that handles medium

Re: FS Friday: Minolta film scanner

2018-01-20 Thread P. J. Alling
If I remember correctly, with a USB scanner Viewscan required that you
have a working USB driver for the scanner.  That's usually why the
"native" scanning software fails.

The driver model was changed by Microsoft several times from Win2000, to
WinXP and Vista and support for the old model was completely dropped
with the release of Windows 8.  Sometimes you can get older drivers to
work with Windows 7, in compatibility mode, though that's not guaranteed
as those compatibility modes are sometimes not all that compatible.

IIRC Minolta got out of the scanner business before Apple went to Intel.

As it's USB you should be able to use it with an old OS in a virtual machine on
modern hardware. My experience with USB devices on Virtualbox is that it was a
bit fiddly to set up but it worked very well.

Your other choices are Vuescan, or an old machine (PPC Mac or Windows). I had
to keep old hardware as my scanner is Firewire.

Also, for Mac users, you can still get Firewire connectivity (using Thunderbold
ports)
either as a seperate conversion cable or with Firewire ports on external
displays
that include a Thunderbolt hub.

I plan to use my Nikon 8000-ED using such a display, with Vuescan ...

There's also the option of SilverFast for software, though I don't
recommend it. The quality is excellent (my old Kodak RFS3600 scanner
came with SilverFast) but it's pricier than VueScan and - get this -
each version of SilverFast works with only one scanner: If/when you
get a new scanner you have to purchase the software again! No thanks,
SilverFast.

To use a FireWire scanner on my up-to-date computer hardware I just
bought an IEE1394 card and plugged it in. Good to go!

I'm printing them myself - actually prefer that people either buy the small
calendar for these (versus the flower calendar introduced earlier) as I

don't have a wide enough comb binding machine to go along anything wider
than 11 inches.

PLease note, you over seas guys especially, that you can download the whole
gallery and print them yourself. Alan C suggested I offer that as an option

as shipping the print version to such far reaching places as where he lives
would be porhibitively expensive... so Alan, ahem, ahem... how about taking
that

option? $3.00, $8.50, $12 depending on resolution - and you really don't
need the highest resolution. The photos alone are included in the gallery
pricing.

I've already sold a few - and I'd like orders early so Ican space out the
printing. All will be shipped by the end of November at the latest.

Ken -
Thanks and

good point about size I'll add that tothe smugmug listing - it is
there

on cafepress... it is the only size they make now.

It is the standard wall calendar size, each page printed on 8 1/2 x 11"
paper, landscape orientation, of course
so when hung for display it is 11 across and 17 " high

I know you recognized some of the locations :-)

Yup -
Order from me please
(Oh, you just did! :-) )

$19 plus $3.00 shipping - paypal is fine just use my email addy. No
rush on the money, but fine if it is sooner than later.
To reiterate the drill at the most basic -I'm ordering the calendars on
NOV 15, will getthem out as soon as I receive them
with wiggle room if cafepress screws up printing - all should have
theircalendars no

later than mid Decemberand hopefully sooner.

Thanks !

Re: FS Friday: Pentax K-mount lenses - update

2014-08-30 Thread Stanley Halpin
Several of the lenses are either sold or are under consideration by someone.
Gone for sure are the 12-24, 30, 60-250. Maybe gone are the 77 and 200 macro.
So, still available are the following:

- DA* 16-50/2.8 $450
- FA* 24/2.0$450
- DA 40/2.8 Limited $250
- A 50/2.8 Macro$150
- K 55/1.8 $ 30
- M 135/3.5 $ 30
- DA* 300/4 $800

- FA 28-105/4-5.6 $ 50

- Sigma 150-500/5-6.3 $750

There are two real sleepers in the list which I had thought would be the first
to go. The K 55/1.8 was a very early K-mount which would probably make a fine
portrait lesson an APS-C body. Like the DA 55/1.4 which is on the market for
about $770 more. The M 135/3.5 is a gem. The relatively slow 3.5 max aperture
doesn’t seem so slow when “film” speeds of 3200-6400 provide decent results.

It is tempting for no other reason than nostalgia, once I had my own camera,
the only reason I ever borrowed Dad's spotmatic is that I needed it in

and "Takumar" on the front ring. It comes complete with it's original
case and the rectangular hood (in it's own case). The Hood also has
one word scratched out, apparently for easy identification purposes.
This may be bad from a collector's standpoint, but other than that
this lens and the cases appear to be unused. The optics and mechanics
on it are flawless. This lens has also spent several weeks under a UV
bulb to remove the yellowing caused by the Thorium element. Both
original caps also included. Lens, caps, hood and both cases... $145
plus actual shipping.

Thanks for looking!

Re: FS Friday: P/KA Adaptall mount & Super Tak 35mm f2.0

2013-09-06 Thread Joseph McAllister
55 years ago, when there were no crooks around, you could leave your doors
unlocked at night, windows open on hot nights, car keys in the ignition, and
the bank would call you before you overdrew your account. Of course, a call to
you uncle two states away cost $6.00 for 10 minutes as well!

The police at the time recommended you engrave your Social Security Number on
any items of value, so they could just call the SSA, and find out who to return
the stolen item to.

Thieves would scratch out the SS#, as would anyone to whom you sold a piece of
your gear. Much collectible photo gear, bicycles, tools, transistor radios etc.
were rendered valueless.

The cops never reimbursed us for the loss in value, either.

Bastards!

Hi, everyone. Old-timers may remember me from back in the day when Pentax
ran the list and the grass was at least +3 saturation greener. At any rate,
it's good to see a lot of familiar names. As some of you know, I manage a
Don's Photo store in sunny Winnipeg, Manitoba (motto: "If you can force your
door open, it's not a snow day"). We're a friendly, family-owned
independent company with 8 stores in Canada. The one in south Winnipeg has
a good-looking manager who's shot Pentax his whole life, starting with an
S3. :) I got into medium format when Bill Casselberry (Photography on the
Oregon Coast) mailed me a few slides he had shot. The tonal range and
beautiful colours blew me away, and it wasn't long before I got my own 67II.

To the point: we brought in several 645D bodies from Pentax, and have sold
all of them except for our last two shelf models. These have been taken out
of the box to show customers at the counter level, but have not left the
store. They have less than 800 actuations on them. We're selling them as
'new' open box items, which means they come with the full 1-year Pentax
warranty (2 years if you register it with Pentax online), and are eligible
for our Exceptional Service Plan on new equipment, which can add more time
to Pentax's coverage. To make it easy, we handle all warranty claims for
you. Anyone who's bought gear from us before knows that we're honest, fair,
and take care of any problems for you. Because these are open-box cameras,
the price is ridiculously low, so I wanted to let the PDML group know in
case anyone's had their eye on one but was waiting for the price to drop.

A look at PhotoPrice shows the 645D body selling for around $8800 in both
Canada and the US:

http://www.photoprice.ca/product/03348/Pentax-645D-price.html

That's the body alone, no lens. By the time you add an AF 55mm f2.8, you're
up around the $10k range.

We're selling our last two 645D kits for $7225 CAN... and that includes the
AF 55mm 2.8 SDM lens! No charge for shipping anywhere within Canada; email
me with your zip code for a quote on US shipping. You're not going to find
a better price, so if you were considering bypassing APS-C and full-frame
sensors and stepping up to medium format, let me know. You can reach me by
email at cbrog...@donsphoto.ca or phone at (204) 254-9075.

Cheers,

Chris

50-500mm) and the only *Pentax* AF lenses I currently own are the
F100mm Macro and the 35-70mm f3.5-4.5, I decided that the DA 16-45mm
looks like an excellent lens to fit the hole in my focal length
coverage. I also couldn't resist after perusing the images created
with it that have been accepted to the Pentax Photo Gallery:

FWIW, I was wandering through my Zenfolio galleries, stumbled across a set of
images taken in 2008± with K10D and the 16-45mm.
I think this sample should help make the case that this is a good lens . . .

I really wish I had a couple of hundred laying around. My poor fa
28-80 is getting all sloppy on me and my kit lens is pretty equally
awful. :(

if you don't find a buyer by next week, please let me know.

A good price for a very nice lens. I don't know if there was any build
variation, but my sample was quite good. I sold it when I both my 16-50, but
came to regret having let go of it when I was shooting virtual tours for
Apartment Guide. The 16-45 was just fine for that at 16mm, and I didn't have to
worry as much about banging it off things when I went room to room with the
tripod and camera over my shoulder.

Re: FS Friday - SMC Pentax DA 16-45mm F4 ED AL Zoom

2013-03-22 Thread Jack Davis
My 16-45 has been seldom used, but was noted on an image I recently posted. I
don't think anyone believed I ever took my DA 55~300 off the camera.
It obviously was a reach that was short of a connection.
IOW, my image was so bad, it must be at least partially due to the 16-45.
If you ever "get it" you'll likely grin.

Jack ;-)

I must have missed something because I don't get the joke. :)
