It used to be usual for studios to buy their film in case lots direct from Kodak. Kodak treated them just like they were a large photo store. Well I own a 4 MP digital P&S, but have basically been totally disgusted with it's focusing, shutter lag, lack of decent flash power and no hot shoe, lack of contrast, color, and sharpness, eating of batteries, lack of raw file output, icky viewfinder and the LCD is totally useless outside in the daytime. Did I miss anything? GRRR! So again I leave the digital at home and only use it for selling stuff on ebay for the most part. Thus far I've only found digital aggravating in performance and don't enjoy my experience with this camera (Minolta Dimage s404). I have a hard time being creative with it as I am with 35mm SLR's. I'm really unsure at this point if I would be happy even with a digital SLR and since to finance such a move I would have to sell my existing equipment it doesn't seem logical at this point to me. My biggest concern here I guess is getting taken for the value of my existing equipment in the future if prices continue to drop. If I go digital at this point I would also have to switch to either Nikon or Canon since I've not been impressed with the reports or results of the *istD thus far and it is only a first generation camera as well. The pros seem to think 6MP is enough, but considering the ppi's I get from scanning with only 2830dpi scanner generate a larger image you gotta wonder. If the canon 10D price only had 10 true MP I'd bite I think. For right now I'm considering switching to all canon or nikon though to get in line for it though. That's gonna be tough though as selling my pentax equipment is going to be almost like selling part of myself. Shel, I woudl think that I am a 3a. I use the *ist D extensively but have used my LXen since getting it. I still plan on shooting my 35mm and my medium format along with the DLSR and Optio S. Re: Silly Digital Survey
Somewhere around 3. Use digital prosumer P&S for 95 % of pics. Use film for wide angle, back up, special set ups, long shots, and to provide family with an odd set of prints now and then. Impact of going digital so far. Killed move to K mount. Howver, did purchased several additional SMCT lenses, another Spotmatic F, and another ESII to secure the screwmount base. Don't see further investment in for now. Near term will add following digital equipment: a small (physica size) P&S and a DSLR. P&S as soon as I can locate and checkout. DSLR when have time to to the research to get comfortable with a configuraton of equipment that will meet my needs in the area of flash synch, low light AF, and wide angle. Well i still use the film cameras 75-80% of the time.I use the D1 for money making venues only.I would have loved to aquire a Pentax digital but Nikon and Canon already had market share,AND PRODUCT,out so when push came to shove,Nikon won me.Not a fan of big white plastic lenses Canon has.Would make me look like a "pro" then. There are folks that don't want digital photos. I shoot film for them. They are getting fewer rapidly. I try to shoot digital as much as possible. I keep my PZ-1p for the folks that want me to use film. I also have a few older film bodies that I have no intention of selling, whether I ever use them again or not. They are just old friends, I'm going to have a couple of them serviced soon, just to keep them in good shape. Len * There's no place like 127.0.0.1
Re: Silly Digital Survey
Hi, Shel, 1) Still a film diehard. Digital? We don't need no stinking digital! 2) I don't see myself doing digital until I absolutely have to. Like when I can't get film any more. And by film I mean (as many of you know) HP5+ or Tri-X (I'd go T-Max or Delta if I couldn't get the previous two). My needs are simple. As I said recently, film continues to do everything that I ask or need in a photographic sense, and the cost of going digital for me would be prohibitive, as I'd need to upgrade computers and other peripherals along with buying a digital cam. 3) N/A 4) Apparently many more than I thought! cheers, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. this fits me closest. i have some film left to polish off, but after that i am not sure which film i will end up with. i normally shoot Provia 100F with Velvia 50 sometimes. i used to use Provia 400F for my long lens shots because i needed the speed for the higher shutter speeds. now, if i am going to shoot 400, i'm giving up enough anyway that i might as well just use the *istD at 800 and give up a little less. i expect to shoot some Provia 100F for quite a while and Velvia when i think i will get results that i will blow up a lot more than 12x18. 5) None of the above. I've had a digital camera for over 3 years, but I still use film. With a *ist-D in the camera case I expect the ratio to shift more to digital, but I'll still have a film body with me. Not just as a backup, and not just for the wide-angle shots; I sometimes take the identical shot with film and digital; digital for immediacy, and film in case I want more resolution for a large print.

Re: Silly Digital Survey
Shel, How about one more category... 0) How many own a decent digital (3-4 megs), but haven't given up shooting film. We just use the digital for snaps... Regards, Bob S. I have 4 camera bodies. *istD, 2 x MZ-S and an MX which was my first SLR and I keep for sentimental reasons and for long exposures. So no I haven't. >2) How many are in the process of doing so (like Bruce, who is actually >selling equipment) as opposed to "thinking about it," which doesn't >count in this survey. I'm not even thinking about it with the current level of digital technology. When we hit 24 megapixels with 3 colours per pixel, I will start thinking about it. I am also going to keep shooting Kodachrome until I can no longer get it. I do not think I will be buying another film body. >3) How many have made the switch to digital, but keep a film camera >around for one reason or another, although you do not use, and have not >used, the film camera since acquiring your digital camera? I have used and continue to use the my film cameras. They are different tools for different jobs. >4) To put the numbers in perspective, how many list members are there. Lots. Most of them are fairly quiet though. Leon http://www.bluering.org.au http://www.bluering.org.au/leon
