Christian,

My experience is that the Macro may account for a good part of the distinction. The
Pentax A100/2.8 Macro is a cut above most other Pentax glass.

I shouldn't think so. Requiring all items, including your strap and your
belt buckle to be Pentax is a bit foolish. No one has ever complained over
occasional third party glass in the open galleries. I've never heard anyone

I'm new to Pentax bodies having used crappy Ricoh's until I bought an LX
recently. Therefore I have non-Pentax lenses. Yes, I plan to buy Pentax
lenses as soon as the budget allows but in the meantime I will get by with
my off-brand lenses. Incidentally I have a Vivitar Series 1 105mm Macro

Well Lasse, it is the PENTAX users gallery after all. Not being
a hard nosed person myself, I would say that as long as the
camera body and the lens used is Pentax brand, then the
submission will be published.
I will certainly consider objections to this criteria. For
example, it may be desirable to allow non Pentax brand lenses in
the open galleries, as long as the body is Pentax.
This really is mostly a non issue, but if you look at this
months gallery, you will note that two of the submissions are
from Canon and Nikon users respectively. While it is nice that
they want to be seen in our forum, I want to discourage what I
see as creeping horseshit from gaining a foothold in the PUG.
As always, the gallery maintainer is the final arbiter of what
will or will not be published in the PUG, but I will be guided
by the desires of the people for whom the gallery is published
for, which is the members of the PDML.

I invite discussion on this subject.

I have a photo that I think should be used as an example of minimum requirements for
submission to
the PUG. It is a shot of Doug Brewer (the list maintainer) taking a shot of me with
his MZ-S and a
31 mm Limited lens. It was taken with my ME Super and his 77 mm Limited.

I think that should be minimum requirements for the PUG. Photos of Pentax gear being
used by a
Pentax Mailing List member taken with Pentax gear. Is that Pentax enough, or do we
need more
restrictions?

Note: for the humor impaired, the above is intended sardonically.

So Paul,
When I'm out passing film back and forth in my "new" MZ-5n while my Kalimar
zoom is mounted (you don't think I'd have a Pentax lens if I had some
money?), I'm not a Pentax user but If I mount my Pentax lens I am?
IMO, this makes no sense. If you are using anything Pentax, you are a
Pentax user.
Perhaps I should subscribe to the "Pentax Bodied But Sometimes Other
Manufacturer's Lenses" Mailing list

The rule works for me in it's currently posted form:
9. Submissions must have been made using Pentax P&S, Digital, 6x7, 645,
K-Mount or M-42 screw mount camera equipment. Third party equipment is
welcome if it is Pentax compatible, and either the body or lens is
Asahi/Pentax

My 2 cents worth, adjusted for inflation...
Pentax bodies should be required, but for numerous reasons brought up

Yes, so? Being a non Pentax shooter is not a race, ethnic origin, religion,

Karlsson! I was not being sarcastic, and it's somwhat arrogant to assume

extent all the time. Just like you and me, here in this exchange wherein you

fact of life - spoken. (You did note that I included myself in that post,
didn't you?)

Maybe. Maybe not.

Every year in the US there is a rifle match known as the John C. Garand
Match. Only specific US military rifles are allowed. The point is not for
everyone to be on an equal footing as evidenced by the fact that only
"...any "as-issued" U. S. service rifle including the M1 Garand, M1903
Springfield, M1917 Enfield, M1941 Johnson or .30 Cal. M1 Carbine." may be
used. These rifles have *significantly* different capabilities. The shooters
shoot. Scores are kept and a prize is awarded. One might assume that the
competition is about the marksman, his ability to hold tight groups and
score high. It's not. The match is about "...those who served" in our nation
's Armed Services and who carried the Garand rifle in the defense of our
country."

I know that analogy isn't perfect. No analogy is, else it would be the thing
itself. The point is, folks do their best, other folks comment. Some look at
the gallery to enjoy the accomplishments of others, some perhaps to learn
something.

Still, the point of the gallery is not us, or even our photos. The point is
Pentax. That's why it's called The Pentax Users Gallery". It's amazing to me
that folks would think that such a gallery would be about us or our photos.

Your desires are not without merit. If the membership wants a gallery
dedicated to themselves and not dedicated to Pentax (use any mix of
equipment), why don't one of you start a "Pentax Discussion List Members
Photo Gallery"? Get space on a server, and do the work to keep it up
yourself. I'm sure Wheatfield Willie will be glad to share the knowledge
he's gained working on the PUG. I have a few shots out of my Graphic I'd
like to post there.

That's my opinion.

Re: What is Pentax equipment?

2001-08-31 Thread JeffW.

I have a silly question.

If the guidelines, in place for at least a couple of years, stated that
Themed submissions required Pentax lens or body and Open could be any K or
M42, why is there even a problem? A submission that didn't meet the existing
guidelines should have been politely refused and everyone could get on with
their lives. No offence to anyone (since I'm not sure who is doing the
gallery) but it sounds like a screw-up at the Gallery end and doesn't
require a major arguement about what is/isn't Pentax equipment.

Just so people know, I have 2 Pentax bodies, 2 other K-mount bodies, 6 M42
bodies (no Pentax) and three medium format bodies. I have lenses that are
Pentax, Vivitar and many other brands. I can meet whatever guidelines are
set if I choose to submit anything again. But why change the rules?

Again, I would opt to allow third party lenses on Pentax bodies or
Pentax lenses on other bodies. I have six Pentax bodies and twenty
Pentax lenses, but one of my best lenses is a Vivitar Series 1 90/2.5.
I'm a Pentax shooter through and through, but I'd like to be able to use
this lens for PUG submissions. (As I have in the past.) I'll go with
whatever the final decision mandates, but I'd like to see PUG keep the
door open for third party lenses and Pentax lenses with other bodies.

Re: What is Pentax equipment?

2001-08-31 Thread Rofini

Using Pentax only equipment is restrictive but maybe that's how
it should be. It's a Pentax Gallery. I very much look forward to
and enjoy viewing the PUG, and will continue to enjoy regardless
of equipment criteria. My preference, and that's all it is,
would be a gallery using only Pentax/Asahi glass. I would even
discriminate between Pentax designed and "rebadged" lenses. But
any light tight box for the lenses would be fine.

On the other hand I must admit I have enjoyed viewing many
images produced with second and third party lenses on the Pentax
and Related Users Gallery :)

RE: What is Pentax equipment?

2001-08-31 Thread Kevin Thornsberry

Hello, my name is Kevin Thornsberry and I submitted a picture to the September PUG
with a Sigma lens.

whew . . .I feel better.

For October I had planned to submit a picture taken with my ZX-5n and my Pentax FA
28-200, but also with a cheap old Soligor 2x converter I needed to get the shot. I've
since replaced the Soligar 2X with Pentax 1.4x and 2x converters. Please advise.

Lasse wrote:
> Maybe because the submission guidelines says that during open months
>pictures shot with non Pentax equipment are welcome...

Well, that's what I thought. I wasn't trying to break the PUG rules. The fact is, I
own two non-Pentax branded lenses (and one is in my "to be sold" category). The other
is my Sigma 20/1.8 Ex. Now, I have no problem living within the rules. I'm not going
to lie about what I use so if you say that I can't submit pictures with my Sigman 20
then I'll probably just sit some months out since I'm really enjoying using it but
for me, when I'm walking around with my Pentax/Sigma combo I'm not a Sigma shooter.
I'm a Pentax shooter. Sigma has produced an accessory that permits me to get more
enjoyment out of my Pentax equipment. Pentax doesn't really have a lens I consider
equivalent. Consequently, if you take a vote, I'd vote for allowing any pictures with
some component being Pentax, generally body or lens. However, I reserve some respect
for the rebels in this world who will put a Pentax filter (I understand that Pentax
SMC filters are of very high quality) on the front of !
a Fijayamigushi system they bought on the home shopping network for $19.99 just to
make a statement. If they do, the PDML will deliver the appropriate "Boos" and
"Hisses". In the mean time I have a few more confessions to make

+ I replaced the Pentax neck strap on my Zx-5n with one by Op-Tech.

+ I once considered buying an Olympus right angle finder because I heard they fit
+some Pentax bodies.

+ I have numerous Pentax lenses purchased from KEH that were later fitted with "no
+name" lens caps.

+ I recently posted a message to the PDML which contained some remarks in favor of
+digital photography.

+ I filter most threads about Spotmatics and LXs.

+ I once admired a Nikon F5 in a store. I looked really big and it was all black.

+ I occaisionally post messages in rich-text format. (Purely by accident, I promise)

+ I removed a tag from my mattress which clearly stated, "Do no remove under penalty
+of law."

+ I drink directly from the milk jug.

+ I swim within a hour of eating.

+ I think "Seinfeld" was a dumb show.

+ I was a little insulted by Bob Blakely's remarks.

+ I used to think Disco was cool.

I personally would look toward Pentax bodies with any lens. It is very
common practice for stores to sell a kit that contains a third party lens.
Or in the case where a third party lens is chosen due to cost or
availability. I think that if you buy the Pentax body, you are pretty much
a Pentax user.

Re: What is Pentax equipment?

2001-08-31 Thread John Mason

Seems to me that posting only images taken only with
both Pentax bodies and lenses is too restrictive.

To judge from the responses to this subject, I'm not
the only one who very often uses non-Pentax lenses
(and filters and flashes, camera straps and lens
hoods). I've taken many of my favorite photos with my
K1000, KX, and 5N with non-Pentax lenses and would
like to continue to post them to the PUG.

Such a restriction would also have the effect of
excluding many newcomers to Pentax photography and
those who for whatever reason haven't invested in much
Pentax gear. I'm thinking, for instance, of the
people who buy used equipment (yesterday I was in a
camera store when a college student bought a K1000
with a Ricoh lens for her photography class) or who
buy new Pentax bodies packaged with third party
lenses.

Restrict PUG images to those taken with Pentax lenses
_and/or_ bodies? Sure. That's sufficiently within
the spirit of the PUG _and_ sufficiently
differentiates it from other web galleries.

I thought you had decided awhile back that pic had to be taken with a Pentax camera,

I haven't submitted an image to the gallery yet. I have a lot of Pentax
stuff from cameras to lenses. I also have a Canon T90 and a Ricoh XRX-3PF.
I sometimes use SMC Takumar lenses on those bodies via adapters. I think it
should be OK to mix equipment as long as one of the items is Pentax.

I hope so, as for some focal lengths, all I've got is non-Pentax
glass. And a greater difficulty for me if we require Pentax
lenses is that while I can look up which body I used for each
roll of film, I seldom record which lens was used for which
frames. So unless it's obvious from field-of-view and perspective,
I may not _know_ whether a potential submission was made with
a third-part lens or not.

The impression I've had is that the PUG is for members of
this particular little community to show off to each other,
and that while we all identify as Pentax-users, some of us
do have other equipment as well. I know that I don't think
of myself as a "Pentax and Olympus and Konica" shooter, but
I've had to skip over some photos I wanted to share when I
noticed they were made with non-Pentax cameras. (For some
reason those shots always come to mind during theme months...)
Okay, the Olympus died a couple years ago, but I did get
some cool shots from it.

After all, while we do want to show off (as a side effect)
what can be accomplished with Pentax gear, it's the photographer
rather than the equipment that makes a photo a good photo.
And whatever equipment used for a particular image, it's
still showing off what a self-identified Pentax-user can
do; someone who considers Pentax a brand name worth being
identified with whether it's his or her only brand or not.

So I can see why we've allowed non-Pentax gear in the past.

That having been said, I _do_ agree that restricting a
gallery with Pentax prominently in the name to photos made
with Pentax gear is _not_unreasonable_. But I do hope that
the most inclusive interpretation of that restriction is
used. I'd hate to have to rule out large numbers of
potential submissions because my 135/2.8 screwmount is
a Vivitar, or my 400/6.8 preset K-mount is some off-brand,
or I can't remember whether I used the Super Takumar 55/1.8
or the Fuji 50/1.7 that day.

"I'm a Pentax shooter, and I shot this on my trusty Pentax."

(Yes, I know the lens is more important to image-forming
than the body. I still don' wanna be left out 'cause I
couldn't afford a Pentax lens in a particular length.)

There are numerous ways that you can present your non-Pentax photos to
the group, and to the world, aside from the PUG.
