Re: OT Apple help

2024-10-06 Thread steve harley
(yes, i am still on this list)

i moved from a Mac Pro 2013 to a Mac Mini M2 Pro last year; the Mini is
extremely capable; i don't think the regular M2 would make much difference, but
i would suggest 16GB RAM — i push mine hard and sometimes wish i had 32GB; i
run apps for audio, photo, GIS, design and lots and lots of browser tabs

there is likely an M4 mini to be announced this month, which may figure into
the choice; it might default to 16GB — it will also mean discounts on the
current line

i have both thunderbolt and USB external drives plus two thunderbolt displays
attached, no problem; HDMI is supported natively as well (no need for an
adapter), and adapters can be had for most anything else

i have used a lot of different keyboards, both bluetooth & USB; they all work,
but if she uses a Windows-style keyboard (like me right now) she'll need an
obscure yet trivial tweak to put the command and option keys in the right place
(if she cares)

but i think most students would prefer a laptop; the MacBook Air line is about
as powerful as the Minis, but with fewer ports for external devices; again get
16GB RAM

Re: OT Apple help

2024-10-02 Thread Bob W PDML
I have a Mac mini which I bought for the vanishingly rare occasions when
iPhone or iPad apps don’t have some functionality I need that a full-on bit of
software has. I already had an Apple keyboard which I used with the iPad if I
needed to do any big typing. I also have a trackpad which I prefer to a mouse.

Being cheap I decided to do without a monitor, the Apple ones are ridiculously
expensive, so for the last 3-4 years I’ve used an ancient TV screen as an
occasional monitor. It’s very low res, and 4:3 ratio, but it sort of works,
although some windows don’t entirely fit and I sometimes have to go into the
display settings and faff about.

Last week I saw that there is a class of thing called a portable monitor, so I
bought one on Amazon for £125. It’s better than the TV screen but it has a very
annoying habit of blanking for a second or so every few minutes, so I wouldn’t
recommend it for someone who needs to spend any amount of time in front of it.

Another option, if there is already a PC or laptop in the vicinity, is to
remote in and use the Mac mini as a headless server using VNC or some such.

Specs say it's got a 256GB internal SSD.

External SSDs that work with the Mac Mini are fairly inexpensive. Much
more so than the Apple upgrade price for internal drives.

I would think about getting the memory upgrade because I don't think you
can add memory later.

Does Apple use normal video connections, such that I can attach a non-Apple

Specs say it's got one HDMI output. You might need a "Thunderbolt 4 to
HDMI" adapter cable.

Will any bluetooth keyboard/mouse work - can I use a cabled one?

I have an older Mac Mini (Intel Mac) and it came with a Macally Keyboard
& Mouse (cabled, numeric keyboard, 2-button scroll mouse) and an AOC
monitor. The Macally keyboards have the Apple specific keys.

https://www.amazon.com/Macally-Keyboard-Shortcut-Optical-MKEYECOMBO/dp/B01A109UHW/?th=1

https://www.amazon.com/AOC-27B2H2-Frameless-1920x1080-Compatible/dp/B0C8ZJ6RW8/?th=1

I think the Mac Mini is meant for people who want Apple, but don't want
to bust their budget, so it's designed to work with non-Apple displays,
mice, keyboards & external drives.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Re: OT Apple help

2024-10-01 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I don't know what a "normal video connection is".

A new Mac mini cpu configured with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD drive and delivered
with Logic Pro installed is approx $1200. It has an HDMI port to drive video
output, so any display with an HDMI input is usable, and any
keyboard/mouse/trackpad input device with Bluetooth, USB-A, or
USB-C/Thunderbolt outputs will be useable.

I would spend the extra couple hundred $ and go with 1TB SSD because sound and
video manipulations generally consume a lot of disk space. External drives for
extended storage with USB-C connection are best, and are reasonably inexpensive
for capacities of 4 to 6 TB.

Apple systems are generally supported for about 5-6 years of macOS revisions,
so that gives your daughter a computer she can rely upon for an entire
University degree program, rather than buying an old system that will go out of
date and not be upgradable to the next revision of the apps/macOS she needs.

(This is pretty much precisely what my partner and I gifted our niece with over
the Summer because she is starting her University degree program as well. We
went with a MacBook Air laptop, though, because she needed/wanted mobility use,
which added a bit to the cost. Call it $1900, and that of course includes the
display and keyboard in the unit rather than having to purchase them
separately. She'll use it for the entirety of her degree program, so $500 per
year if it was then just tossed into the garbage (which it won't be), so that's
really not a lot for an essential part of a modern student's annual University
budget.)

That’s an M2 Mac mini. You can get it at a good price with 16 gigs of RAM. That
will be plenty although more is available. Any bluetooth keyboard eill connect
and any monitor will as well. Although for simplicity sake I’d go with the
basic Apple wireless keyboard. it’s not expensive and quite good. I use the
same Mac for photo editing with the latest PhotoShop version including new AI
functions. It kicks butt. I have one 37-inch Drll monitor and one 31-inch LG
monitor connected using the Mac video port. I have 20 external dtived
connected. Simple,

I had actually just put a camera in my car "just to have one" for the first
time in quite a while, when there was a small wildfire on my way to work, so I
pulled over and gave the new to me 18-250 a bit of a workout. The full album is

I have a friend from tango who used to have a photo portraiture business, and
she had never done any night photography. We went out searching for dark skies,
found some a bit over an hour from here. I used the opportunity to try out the
type 3 astrotracer in my K-3 III, and see how it compares with the GPS based
astrotracer in the K-1. The answer is much better. Unfortunately the exif data
doesn't seem to mention what type of astrotracer was used. Also, it insists on
doing a test shot for every frame, even if nothing else moves. Anyways, the
full album is here:

#13 is from a trick Tony Sweet showed us in 2005 or 2006 at GFM, but
setting camera to low iso and fstop around 22 to get a slow shutter like
3.5" as in this case, then rotate camera left along its axis, as in this

Well done, Dave

You have a good eye allowing you to make something of nothing. I need to

Now, your knee. You sound like an ailing Road Runner. Could be simply an

Otherwise, perhaps a knee replacement. Hope you can sort it out.

2024-09-16 Thread Alan C

Thanks, John & Larry.

I don't bother much with the usual run-off-the mill game shots any more
- they tend to get rather overdone!  John, South Africa is a cheap
destination with the current exchange rate. The Kruger Park with
self-drive is very affordable compared with the posh private game
reserves & lodges. Much cheaper than East Africa & Botswana. In fact,
all organised tours are very expensive.  We get a lot of tourists
particularly from the Netherlands coming through Phalaborwa every year
in hired Campervans, sometimes in mini-convoys.

Much cooler today after 3 days of almost 40°C - unheard off in Sept.
Hopefully we won't hit 50 in Summer.

Thanks Alan! I’ll join in on the praise of Filip’s very nice “action” shot!
Nicely seen and composed. I also liked the curious seals in the north and the
“getting to know you” sea lions in the south. I’ve been on that beach on
Kangaroo a couple of times Brian, and all I remember seeing were critters
sleeping. If I get another opportunity, I’ll look more closely for this sort of

Re: How to see all exif data in lightroom?

2024-09-08 Thread Larry Colen
Thanks a bunch, that was the one I was trying to find, but couldn't remember
the name. It didn't do what I wanted with regards to exif data, but it pointed
me to this plug-in
https://johnrellis.com/lightroom/anyfilter.htm

which Jeff recommended as being more powerful than his. In the process it
pointed me to Exiftool
https://exiftool.org/index.html

Which I ended up using, and found out that Pentax does not record which version
of astrotracer was used on the image. So, I'll need to actually record time
and frame numbers at some time comparing the different versions.

BTW, more of John Ellis' plug-ins here
https://johnrellis.com/lightroom/allplugins.htm

Lightroom is actually pretty weak on what it is willing to give up to

I feel your pain bro. I only need two things to get my MGB back on the road,

A friend has a frogeye that has been garaged, and not running, for about 45

Re: PESO: 1946 Power Wagon

2024-09-04 Thread Bill
I spent some time chatting with the lad in the background of the
picture. He and his dad had salvaged the machine from a farmyard and had
taken it on. He indicated that this was the first 4 wheel drive truck
introduced to the civilian market. I don't know if that's the fact, but
he seemed pretty sure of himself.

He is VERY proud of his truck.

This one is powered by the original 218CID inline 6 that it came from
the factory with. When they did the restoration they used bed liner
spray on the running boards rather than the original gloss black enamel.
I think that was the only unforced "improvement" they made. I don't
think the tires were stock, but I suspect that after nearly 80 years,
the stock tires are no longer readily available so they did the best
they could.

Thanks all for looking and commenting.

The trashcan is on the left (cylindrical design) and the cheese grater
(perforated aluminium front grille) on the right.

I agree that it is a good machine - I've got one. But for those not
familiar with the "Air" part of MacBook Air it has only two USB-C ports.
The workaround is to get a multifunction dock that plugs into one of them.
I got one that had good reviews on Amazon and it has worked well for
everything asked of it, so far.

Funny how Belgian television sounds like an insult, cf Mr Adams, but Belgian
beer is definitely not. Maybe there's a causative link. The really good thing
about electric bikes is that you can decide, to a greater or lesser degree, how
tired you will be at the end of the day. Doesn't do much for the state of your
