Its a scanning software available for using with different scanners. Beauty
of the program is as I have heard from many people at different places, it
significantly increases the quality of the scan - the corrections needed to
be done are substantially less.

Re: Just bought a HP Photosmart S20

2001-10-02 Thread Nenad Djurdjevic

I actually exchanged the first one I had too (due to a more serious
intermittent fault than slightly out of focus slides) but both scanners I
tried scanned slides slightly soft. I don't think it is an adjustment
problem but more a case of it simply being a 'cheap and cheerful' piece of
equipment (as they say: 'you get what you pay for'). The good thing is it
scans prints sharply and at least has the ability to can scan slides and
negatives if necessary. Also since exchanging the first faulty one it has
given over a year of unfailing service (touch wood) so on balance I am happy
with it.

I have to clarify that I have noticed this lack of
focus just recently. Before it worked fine.

The HP support page recommends to change the media
mode with the sacnner upside down (no kidding) up to 3

I have a Plustek Opticpro 9636T which has a slide/negative scanning ability
(at 1200dpi).
I have also noticed that scans of slides are slightly out of focus. I think
that this is because a mounted slide sits a bit above the scanning surface.

Re: Just bought a HP Photosmart S20

2001-10-02 Thread Jaume Lahuerta

Paul,

I have been using the S20 for more than a year, and
one of the biggest problems that I see is the
unability to scan several mounted slides at the same
time (like stripes of negatives).

About colors, I noticed that when scanning negatives,
people faces (and skin in general) came up too red.
This is not as much noticeable in slides.
Dust is also an issue, but I don't know if other
scanners have the same problem.
Recently it seems that there is a lack of focus in my
unit when scanning slides. This is documented in HP
support web pages and I am going to try the (simple)
proposed solution.

I tried vuescan once, but I find it little
userfriendly and I wasn't patient enough to
investigate further. I have herd only good things
about it though.

Anyway, i think it is worth for the money (specially
what you paid :-) ), although I am beggining to
consider upgrading it.

Jaume
(BTW: All my PUG submissions have been made using this
scanner)

Hi Paul,

This is the site address ...http://www.normankoren.com
I hope, you will find his pictures and writing quite helpful. What I really
liked is he has been using this S20 till recently.

I am not aware whether this model S20 is discontinued. I have not heard it
so far. I think it is still available here and on site of HP it is still
not as 'discontinued'. Anyway, good that you got it a lot cheaper. ( I am
jealous !!)

I too read about vuescan and thought of downloading it. however, so far
have not yet done it - just got too much things at work. how do you find
vuescan ? i think it must be that vuescan which is giving you better scans
without making adjustments.

there are still some other sites in some e-mails with me.
shall hunt those and forward those too later... got to go to bed..

HI Anand,

Mine was the last one they had in stock so they reduced it from $995au to
$499au. The salesman said it had been discontinued? It came with a 3 year
warrantly also.

When comparing my slides to the scans i'm getting the colours are pretty
close to whats on the slide. I will have a play around with them though, as
i'm sure it could be improved.

I have downloaded Vuescan, but have only had a quick look at it. Will do
some testing comparing it to the HP software when i get a chance.

I look forward to looking at the site you mention.

Re: Just bought a HP Photosmart S20

2001-10-01 Thread Anand DHUPKAR

Hi Paul,
I also bought S20 recently - say four months back, however, did not use it
that extensively to give any authoritative feed back to you. However, it is
surely a good scanner and my findings are -
1. yes, the scanned images are a bit soft. i always need
to sharpen those. default sharpness is something
around 20, i increase it to around 40.
2. the colours, in my observations, do need corrections.
not that those are not good, they are ok, however,
i find those tending a bit red.
3. also, exposure in highlights and shadows need
   adjustments
4. i used to scan normally at 300 / 600 dpi with jpg or
bmp formats, just this week-end i tried at 2400 dpi
with tiff format - i thought of doing some
'dust-fixing' in picture-it. it was good.
5. i had a pretty old b&w negative, which, somehow, did
not come out that good. i am still struggling with
   that one.

There is one photographer who has compiled a very good information on using
this S20 scanner - I don't remember his name/his site right now. I have it
at home and shall let you know in the evening. It is a good source.

I am surprised, however, on your point that the colour reproduction is spot
on. I still would suggest you to play around exposure and colours a bit.
It would enhance the quality a lot. Also, looks like it is rather cheaper
there. I bought it for something around US$ 450 +. I am very much in U.S.
Have they reduced prices recently ?!

anand.

My worst problems come not just from dust but from crap that the lab left on
them. I keep a small blower-brush beside the workstation to get rid of 99% of
the dust, not just to keep it off my scanned image but also to keep the dust out
of the scanner itself.

Pretty well I think; a guy at work has one and I've seen some of his prints.

It is one of the *very few* scanners around that will scan true panoramas
(Xpan type stuff). In fact, I think its the only one that will do so at any halfway
decent resolution (my Agfa Arcus 1200 maxes out at 1200dpi and is not very
sharp).

Yes, the S20 also leaves a lot to be desired when scanning b&w. Setting
exposure to zero helps, but still not what I would call a good scan. I've
been trying Vuescan for b&w, and with a lot of trial and error and can
usually get a usable scan, but still nothing to write home about.

Paul,

When I had an S20 I found that all of my scanning improved quite a bit by
using Ed hamrick's VueScan software. You can find it at www.hamrick.com.
You can download a trial version and try it out. I was immediately sold
when I was trying to scan night shots on slide film. Much better results
with VueScan. I have also found that VueScan works better with my Minolta
Scan Dual II than the Minolta supplied software. I would try it out before
you finalize the quality of your scanner.

Hi,

I will try giving it a good clean with that blower tool and see if i can get
rid of some of the dust.

I'm getting some film developed now, one roll of Superia 400 and another of
Astia 100, so will get to play with it again tonight. With the C41 i just
got it developed and no prints made as i can just scan them now :) I'll

To minimise the dust on negatives I go through a routine every time I use

I agree that it's a great scanner for the money. However, I often find the
colors and exposure sometimes not to my liking. When this happens, I
usually set the color wheel to zero and sometimes find it necessary to tweak
the exposure somewhat. 2400dpi is really overkill for web images and even
PUG entries. I usually scan at 1200 dpi, then resample to 600 pixels on the
long axis and use "save for web" in PS. If and when you start printing,
1200 dpi is fine for 4x6, 1800 for 5x7 and 2400 for 8x10. I've even done
some prints enlarged to 13x19 with satisfactory results.
