After a little research I'm thinking I'll have to settle for less horsepower than the 3060, for reasons of both heat and noise. I did a new build last year based on a Gigabyte Aorus MB and Aorus video card. I chose the MB because it supported 4 x M.2 cards on the MB which are significantly faster than anything going through the SATA buss. The only other card I attached to the MB is the video card, but there are many slots available for other stuff. One thing that surprised me is that the system tests faster with less ram than I expected, and I ended up installing 64gb of ram instead of the 128gb that I had initially planned on. Gigabyte does make some pretty snazzy gear. I did end up with liquid cooling on the advice of the guy who did the actual build. So in the end, after doing some research based on input from the PDML, I bought a motherboard/CPU package and a new graphics board. I spent several hours today installing the new motherboard (the cooling system I got for the new CPU, although far from the most extensive available, is freakin' HUGE!) and graphics card. Here's the most amazing thing: Windows 10 just booted right up. Yup. Recognized the new hardware and installed drivers almost instantly. You could have knocked me over with a feather! It's still early days but I can already tell this is MUCH faster. Some deconvolution sharpening actions on K-1 files that used to take minutes now take seconds. Big fun. Since it's been a loong time since I've refreshed this system (and I've done too much tinkering in the interim) I'll do an OS refresh and reinstall apps when I have more free time, just to be safe. Upgrading win 10 to 11 is pretty straightforward if I remember correctly. And the GUI is identical, I don't see why you can hate Win11 and love Win10. Microsoft is still weeding out old Win10 code and if you deep dive in the system the old stuff is still running (like control panel, device manager etc). The Settings app is not my favorite tool to tweak, the same for Apple OS's settings app (maybe that's improved but my Mac Mini from 2012 is frozen by Apple). That's pretty much what my build was last year. I ended up with the Aorus x670E Master but a little less processor, I put in the Ryzen 7 7700X. I stayed with Gigabyte for the video card, but mine is also a 3060 with 12gb ram. When I was bench marking stuff I discovered that my intended MB was slower with 128gb of ram than it was with 64 so I went with less ram. I figured using the M.2 cards as swap would be fine, and so far I've only gone to swap a few times with 64b, and that was with hugely deep focus stacks off the X-T5 where it's decided a hundred exposures are required. No reason to go watercooling when there are air coolers like that. Quieter and less problematic - can't have a water leak if there's no water. I'll upgrade my PC someday (probably not this year), and my planned solution looks similar to yours. Except I'll go Zen 5 (Ryzen 9700X, likely), as they'll be available by then. I water cooled my system. Partly because I wanted to, and partly because it was recommended. I've seen a couple of fan coolers that I could have used. Even with liquid cooling I've had CPU temps in the mid 90ºC range when doing some heavy image processing. I wish I could help, but I haven't been keeping up. I've just been buying used mac gear from a friend with a shop in Santa Cruz (Pacific Macs). A couple other people on the list have built up new machines in the past year and would know better than me what to look for. A while back the mobo in my home Linux box fried, I bought a used mobo from a friend, and then it wouldn't boot off the drives I had or something crazy like that. So what I've mostly learned is weird and unexpected things lose compatibility and you're likely to need to replace half your system for more than the cost of just buying a new system. In a related note, I recently put together a RAID NAS with "renewed" drives off Amazon. I'm glad that it's RAID, and second level of backup, because last night one of the drives already crapped out. Yeah, I would expect that a new GPU would give you the most bang for your buck. If you can upgrade the CPU without upgrading your MOBO, that would give a good boost with less risk of finding out that your new mobo doesn't support some bus that one of your old cards needs, or suchlike. It would be very interesting if you could do some sort of benchmark before and after each upgrade. Have lightroom build a 12 frame HDR pano, and then do a denoise on it. Then do the same thing on the same files, each time you upgrade.
