I find that the iPad is great for displaying photos you've already created
elsewhere. It sucks for taking them, and I can't even imagine trying to do
"proper" edits of photos from either of my cameras on there. The time to
transfer the files, the lack of precision for the editing... oh, just no.

I'd recommend you find someone who has one, if you can. Give it a try.
Some people love them and can't live without one and others find they
just don't use them.

I have an Android tablet with a full-size USB port, an HDMI port and
an SD card slot all built in. It can be useful for evaluating photos
in the field with a bigger screen than what's on the back of the
camera. I may give it a try as a video monitor for shooting video with
the K5 (using the HDMI port). I wouldn't think a tablet computer is a
good way for editing photos.

It's main use for photographers is as a portfolio for showing your
work.

So... your tablet has HDMI in, yes? HDMI out, too? I remember you

I can't imagine doing the kind of image editing that I do on one.
Simple global stuff like contrast and brightness maybe.

useful, yes; end-all, no; there are dozens of tools for the basics: cropping,
rotation, exposure adjustment, filtering, even simple retouching; Adobe has
released Photoshop for iPad; the free version (Photoshop Express) may be worth
a try but i would look at several other tools before buying the $10 version; of
apps dedicated to photo editing i've tried with on my iPhone, i liked
Photogene2 best, but that's not a solid recommendation; for organizing photos
options are more limited — iPhoto for iPad was just released and we'll try it
on my partner's iPad soon; i expect it will meet all her basic needs and then some

of note, i've heard Avid Studio is a blast for editing video on the iPad

either; the Camera Connection Kit adds a USB port and SD slot; over wifi you
can use certain tools to manage things manually (e.g. via Dropbox); if you have
an EyeFi card, there's an app to suck your images directly onto an iPad; or you

depends what you need to do; an iBook is more flexible at the basic level, but
iBooks are old enough that there's a good chance the new iPad is more powerful;
it certainly has a much better display (haven't see one yet, but credible
people are saying it's the best display they've ever seen, period); an iPad is
also much more portable

add a Bluetooth keyboard and an iPad can replace computers for some people;
aside from photos it does very well as a writing tool (email, notes, even some
kinds of long documents); it excels at media consumption (music & video, as
well as _viewing_ photos); and it meets most people's needs for web browsing
(though as a voracious web researcher, it holds me back)

i realize i misread your question; to get photos from iPad to computer, you'd
typically plug the iPad it into your computer via the regular sync cable (it
has a USB plug at the far end), then import images to iPhoto or Aperture; i
have not used them, but i understand some iPad apps such as Photosmith ($18)
can sync with Lightroom over USB or wifi; to work more directly, when connected
via sync cable you can use the Mac's built-in Image Capture app to just copy
image files to your hard drive

Re: OT iPad

2012-03-08 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I've been using an iPad 2, 64G WiFi+3G, for about a year. It has
become a nearly indispensable part of my day to day work and
photography endeavors, as well as a source of leisure time enjoyment
from reading books and watching videos.

- The Camera Connection Kit allows importing image files, both JPEG
and raw, from any camera with either SD/SDHC/SDXC cards or that
supports a USB connection.

- Dropbox works very nicely to transfer files on and off the iPad. You
can also move files on and off the iPad when you connect it to a
Windows or Mac OS X computer using a variety of means (on Mac OS X:
Image Capture, iPhoto, Aperture, and iTunes will all allow image
transfers in both directions.) There are other apps available for the
iPad that can utilize the wired transfer as well as WiFi transfers,
like Good Reader. The iPad's 30 pin connector and cable has a standard
USB 2.0 connection plug.

- The number of excellent image processing and management apps
available grows daily. Currently, I use Snapseed and Photogene, and
just downloaded iPhoto. There's also PhotoRAW and piRAWhna that can
process raw files.

On my trip to the UK last October, I used the iPad exclusively to do
everything I needed in computing for the trip, including reviewing and
editing photos. It's a great machine for a whole lot of stuff, better
than even I expected it to be.

The new iPad still falls short of my wish-listed portable photo-procesing
gadget, but I have preordered one of the new iPads anyway.
Limitations:
-limited memory (max 64gb)
-no provision for adding external drive (though I understand that there
are workarounds out there)
-minimal integration of any photo apps other than for Apple's iPhoto.
But, on the plus side:
-killer display for showing off your portfolio or displaying results to
photo subjects. (The kids in the Costa Rican village I visit occasionally love
seeing their image on the LCD screen on the back of the camera; they are going
to be ecstatic when they see themselves on the "large" high resolution iPad
screen.)
- Photosmith app (http://www.photosmithapp.com/) which appears to
provide capability to do some LR work in the field (e.g., keywording, rating,
maybe some actual color adjustments etc.) and then synch that to your real
computer once back home.
-it is a lot easier to use than a laptop for reading an eBook in bed,
for doing a quick web search, for reading email while stretched out on the
couch watching the curling matches . . .

My wife has made heavy use of her's, in lieu of her iBook or iPhone, for
reading books, playing solitare, checking eMail, as a GPS when we are
traveling, etc. On our way to Kansas City earlier this year, as we crossed the
desolate stretch between Springfield IL and Hannibal MO she got an eMail with
an attachment - scanned sheet music for the piece the choir was doing in church
that Sunday. So she found and downloaded a Piano app and used the iPad to
accompany her as she practiced the tune. Can't do that with your phone or your
laptop! [I know I can be proven wrong on both counts, but let me be a bit
hyperbolic for now . . .]

My biggest issue is the memory. For most of what I have described above, the
minimal 16gb would be just fine. The price you pay to move to 32g or 64g is
quite steep, and that memory seems of value only if there is a worthwhile photo
processing utility. I avoided the iPad and the iPad2, and I would also have
passed on the new iPad if it hadn't been for the Photosmith app.

I was under the impression that there weren't (at least a few months

Yes, it is a little more complex ... I wrote too quickly. But you've
made it sound too complex and confusing.

- First, the iPad (and other iOS devices) all have the same Photos
app. The Photos app allows as many different albums of photos as you'd
like, but only the Camera Roll, Imported, and Last Import albums
contain photos created by the camera in the device itself or
transferred via the Camera Connection Kit.

- Image Capture moves image files from the Camera Roll and Imported
albums to a Mac OS X computer, storing them into a folder of your
choice. There is a similar tool provided for Windows computers. iPhoto
and Aperture both use the same routines as Image Capture to move files
from the devices to their own image repositories, however you prefer
to use them. All three apps allow you to delete files after moving
them to the computer from the iPad; Image Capture can also just delete
what you want to get rid of as you wish easily.

- iPhoto and Aperture allow you to organize photos into albums. Or you
can organize photos into folders for uploading instead.

- iTunes will move images to the iPad either directly from iPhoto's or
Aperture's albums, or it will move images to the iPad from a directory
tree of folders in the file system. Choose of the three sources and
work with it. (I have a folder tree that I add folders of images to,
each representing an album once on the iPad; I don't use either iPhoto
or Aperture. If I did use one of the two applications to organize or
edit my photos, I'd export them to a folder first, just like I now do
with Lightroom. When I sync the iPad with iTunes, it moves all the new
images to the Photos app as an album.)

- iTunes will also allow you to drop photos (and other documents)
directly into individual app's file systems on the iPad. (iOS apps
each maintain their own, sandboxed and secure, file system for
documents they can work with.) Drop your documents as desired into the
apps that you have on the iPad and sync ... they're there for you to
work with. You can also retrieve documents created by those apps from
the iPad directly to your computer using iTunes.

So the workflow is:

- upload from card or camera with the Camera Connection Kit
- create new images with the iPad too (the new one has a much nicer
camera than the iPad 2)
- edit on iPad (results go into Camera Roll or direct to online
services per your options)

- download original and finished work with Image Capture, iPhoto or
Aperture, to computer as you please.

- Edit if needed. Organize finished work as albums either in iPhoto or
Aperture, or in the file system as JPEG files in a directory tree.
- Upload to the iPad by using iTunes.

problems there. I have books, cookbooks, music, photos, a menu planner, a
bunch of readers, Dropbox, a dictionary, posted notes, and travel related apps.
i also have the Penultimate notebook app, and I've become very proficient
doing handwritten notes using a stylus. Once I got good at this, there was no
stopping me; I've about 11 notebooks going right now. I even have an app that
lets me annotate PDF files, which is really great because I have to read lots
of PDF stuff for committee work. It works pretty darn good. And, of course, I
have all the standard apps that come with the iPad--iCal, Safari, Address book,
photos et al. With the Cloud everything from documents, to calendar, to
address book is synced on all devices; I have the iPhone 4 and the iMac.

I have lots of photo apps as well: PhotoToaster, Noir, Photogene, Snapseed,
8mm, and Postal. I haven't purchased the Camera Connection Kit, but plan to
as soon as I get some time to head to the Apple store. For now, I put photos
in my photo stream on the iMac then open a photo in one of my photo apps on the
iPad. The desk top will still be my primary workspace for photos (if I ever
start shooting again), but for on the go selected processing, I think the iPad
will work just fine. Darrel and I will be doing some traveling this summer, so
I'll be able to test it out. I signed up for iTunes Match, so my music
library--or most of it, anyway--is backed up in the cloud.

I highly recommend the iPad 2--or, "The New iPad" My only regret is I didn't
buy the 64 gig; I have the 16 gig WiFi only.
There's lots to like about the reading capabilities on tablet devices. I
think the iBook app is the best of the readers I have: Kindle, IB REader,
GoodReader, iAnnotate PDF, but take it from a book person, the traditional book
is heavier, but after that it's completely fuss free and still a more pleasant
reading experience. But again, if you're on the go, and don't want to lug the
weight of reading materials, a good solid mobile reader is the way to go, and I
think the iPad competes well here.

I'm not a "fan" of anything. I enjoy telling people when a product, a
device does what I want, what I need. I wasn't sure when I spent the
money as to whether the iPad would be useful to me as an end-user: I
bought it mostly on the basis of learning how to write software for it
with the notion of creating a business developing apps for
photography. That didn't go the way I'd anticipated ... but it turns
out the iPad itself has been a tremendously useful computer, so much
so that I'm considering now abandoning my plan to buy a newer laptop,
replace my (now aging) MacBook Pro 13" with a Mac mini, and use just
the iPad for all my mobility needs. For most of what I need when I'm
mobile, the iPad is far superior ... including for photographic work.

The use paradigm is almost completely different from the use paradigm
of a keyboard and mouse computer, so it is difficult to project what
you think you know about using one from the experience of using a
laptop. It is much better for most mobile needs/usages, and with the
addition of a wireless keyboard for writing and a stylus for drawing,
moves way past that for many other things.

My experience with third party laptop batteries has not been great.
Most do not hold as much capacity as the originals and do not last as
long. So, despite the excruciating prices, I buy OEM batteries. There
are exceptions but I've found them to be few and far between.

Personally, I don't put $50-100 into aging laptop technology. I'd
rather put that money towards offsetting the cost of a newer device,
whether it be a new laptop or an iPad. The gains associated weigh
heavily in that direction with regard to power, flexibility, and
future upgrades. I would then sell the older device for whatever can
be gotten for it and offset even further the cost of the new device.

(Same goes for camera batteries. NONE of the BLM-1 third party
batteries I've tried for the Olympus bodies are anywhere near as good
as the originals from Olympus. The new BLM-5 battery from Olympus is a
better performer than any of the supposedly higher-performance third
party batteries. That said, the battery replacements I bought for the
K10D and Panasonic L1 from http://www.BestBatt.com proved to be as
good as the OEMs.)

That's definitely the way to go. A tablet device is sometimes a
useful adjunct to a laptop but it's never a replacement for one so
you'd have to get the new battery for your laptop anyway.

that's it, i think it _is_ too complex and confusing, particularly if one wants
to move images bidirectionally between computer & iPad

- iPhoto and Aperture allow you to organize photos into albums. Or you
can organize photos into folders for uploading instead.

a key point is that these channels are mutually exclusive — if you switch
channels you delete all the photos from the other without warning

(I have a folder tree that I add folders of images to,
each representing an album once on the iPad;

how does this work with the non-hierarchical folders on iOS? can the tree have
only one subfolder level?

I don't use either iPhoto
or Aperture. If I did use one of the two applications to organize or
edit my photos, I'd export them to a folder first, just like I now do
with Lightroom. When I sync the iPad with iTunes, it moves all the new
images to the Photos app as an album.)

is there a way to update an exported folder automatically from Lightroom
whenever a set changes? i currently use Aperture for both static image sets
such as my father's and stepfather's photo catalogs, and smart sets such as
"★★+ in the four months" and "★+ in the last two weeks" (those are stars for
those of you without Unicode email); the smart sets are extremely convenient
for a rolling review of my recent work on iDevices; i had to merge my static
sets from iPhoto to Aperture to make this work though

in my contemplated switch to Lightroom i face awkward workarounds to keep
things flowing smoothly; if i use the folder sync at all, i lose *all* the
auto-syncing with Aperture, and i'll have to do repeated manual updates

- iTunes will also allow you to drop photos (and other documents)
directly into individual app's file systems on the iPad.

i realized i had omitted that route, but it's not very useful for me because
few of my many photo-related apps support it, and it doesn't work at all with
the Photos app or the main photo library; also, you can't drag a folder this
way, and you can't look inside subfolders on the iPad, only delete them and
copy them

So the workflow is:

- upload from card or camera with the Camera Connection Kit
- create new images with the iPad too (the new one has a much nicer
camera than the iPad 2)
- edit on iPad (results go into Camera Roll or direct to online
services per your options)

- download original and finished work with Image Capture, iPhoto or
Aperture, to computer as you please.

- Edit if needed. Organize finished work as albums either in iPhoto or
Aperture, or in the file system as JPEG files in a directory tree.
- Upload to the iPad by using iTunes.

this is a good workflow, and a nice summary of it; it will work well for me
insofar as it flows from camera to iPad to computer, but where i think it is
most complicated is going back to iPad; with Aperture it's not too bad, but
it's giving me regrets about my plan to use Lightroom; there is also the fact
that you can't selectively delete from the iPad unless you use Image Capture,
which splits the workflow unless you are using Image Capture anyway (e.g.
because you use Lightroom)

Thanks Mark and Godfrey for input. If i was still doing major photo
equine work, i could see the tablet as a portfolio devise. I think
that saving the iBook, old as it may be, for road trips, storage on
same, and slide shows might be better than a tablet at this time. If

That's a matter of opinion. I don't find it confusing or complex, nor
do several million other people from the reports and feedback on the
iOS devices. Several million others probably want something different
too, of course. ;-)

> a key point is that these channels are mutually exclusive — if you switch

Yes. You pick ONE methodology and stick with it. There's little point
to requiring that all things must allow every possible methodology to
be used simultaneously.

> how does this work with the non-hierarchical folders on iOS? can the tree
> have only one subfolder level?

The 'tree' is one subfolder deep: nested folders of images on Mac OS X
become one Photos album on iOS. That is:

given

~../GiPod_Photos/Polaroids_1/xyz.jpg
~../GiPod_Photos/Polaroids_1/Additions/ZZZ.jpg

that will become the album

 "Polaroids_1" containing xyx.jpg and ZZZ.jpg

in the Photos app when transferred to iOS.

You can use this to your advantage if you think about it.

Lightroom allows creating published folders on your hard drive. As you
add or subtract things from the published folders and publish them,
they are updated on disk ... it's an automated export process. So you
can create published folders mapping to the folders you sync to the
iPad as albums easily.

Or, what I do, is create Export presets that allow you to output
images formatted a particular way to whatever location you want. They
can contain the location information as well.

One things for certain: each tool will do things differently, with
different capabilities and features.

Just output from Lightroom to your master folder tree, one level deep,
as albums. Anything hyou change in those folders will be reflected in
what ends up on the iOS device exactly. It's simple.

You do the album editing by manipulating the files on your Mac OS or
Windows computer. Or by creating and moving files in Photos' albums on
the iPad, except for deleting.

If you need more capability than that, there are dozens of other image
portfolio apps available that will allow you to do significantly more
rearrangement and tweaking of your image files on the iPad.

few of the things i keep notes on are that sensitive, but it's worth pointing
out that Evernote has built-in selective pre-encryption for part or all of any
note, with which your info is secured even from those who might get hold of
your hardware; reliable syncing and ease of use are Evernote's killer features,
but security is there if you need it

i also use 1Password, which can store any file or text, not just passwords, and
within which _everything_ is similarly pre-encrypted prior to syncing via
Dropbox; all my passwords are in the cloud, but they are very secure

by contrast Dropbox itself and iCloud are less secure; though your data is
encrypted en route and in the cloud, there are employees with back door keys,
and those with access to your hardware can still get your info unless you have
taken additional steps

I see tons of threads where people are confused about how to rename a
file on their desktop computer either ... ;-)

What I meant was that there are many many people using the facilities,
at whatever level, who are happy with it. And there are also many
people who can't figure it out. Opinion runs the gamut. I'm quite
happy with how it works, although I can also see room for some
improvements.

It's not the same as my Mac OS X workflow, of course, but I don't
require that my iOS workflow be the same in all respects. Different
devices, different operating system models, for different purposes and
use paradigms. I adapt to what they do and bend it to my own uses.

Perhaps you shouldn't if you like these features in Aperture so much.
Why are you considering moving to Lightroom?

To me, it makes no difference which one you pick, as long as it does
what you like and you become skilled in using it.

Automatically is a judgement call, as you have to trigger when
Lightroom will publish a set. But, it's as automatic as I need. I'm
not all that sensitive to total automation solutions.

Photosmith works with Lightroom (not iPhoto or Aperture):
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photosmith/id427757668?mt=8

I own a copy but I don't use it ... I find it easier to tag, sort and
grade in Lightroom. I do tag using Photogene when exporting direct to
flickr.com, however. Snapseed and Photogene both honor all the
metadata, Photogene's capabilities on metadata editing are more
complete.

Pixelsync works with Aperture and iPhoto for sort/grade/tagging operations:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pixelsync/id409409239?mt=8

The new iPhoto for iOS also supports sort/grade/tagging operations. As
well as grouping, albums, and photobooks. I've got a copy now and will
be giving it a try to see if it's useful for my mobile uses.

LOL! To me, working on any of those systems is hopelessly complicated
by distractions completely outside of what I'm trying to achieve.

> clearly i have to weigh the trade-offs … but actually i was disagreeing with

Of course you can bring together photos from multiple sources. That's
why I choose to go with the 'nested folder of folders' sync approach.
I can (and do) process photos in Lightroom, Photoshop, iPhoto,
Aperture, Snapseed, Flare, Keynote, Pages, and other apps, and any
combination of those apps. The end products of any operations are a
set of curated, rendered JPEG files output to a folder in my master
"iPod-Photos" folder, which represents an album in Photos. iTunes just
syncs the latest state of those photos when I sync the devices.

I just don't expect to connect iPhoto, AND Aperture, AND Lightroom,
AND the file system to the iPad simultaneously. I use each app for
what it does well to enhance my photography, and I use the file system
and iTunes to move what I want to the iPad for display and viewing.

For things that I create ON the iPad, I move them into my original
file repository and then also to the "iPod-Photos" output repository
to put them into an album as appropriate. But there are other
repositories for organizing these things resident on the iPad so it is
often the case that I do not cycle them back through and duplicate
them on the iPad itself.

Adobe and Apple have very different goals in mind for their product
lines. I know both the Aperture and Lightroom teams well, personally
(although the relationship has become rather distant now that I
haven't been in that liaison position for 7-8 years). They don't track
very closely exactly what the other is doing other than at the
marketing level ... they concentrate on different things in their
feature prioritization and implementation schemes.

Lightroom is by default the larger ecosystem as it ships on two OS
platforms, not just one. It also integrates with Photoshop and the
rest of the Adobe Creative Suite at a more fundamental level.

It's also at one and the same time somewhat more sophisticated than
Aperture with regards the basics of image management and rendering
while being at the same time a bit simpler than Aperture with respect
to end user features. This latest rev of Lightroom has moved well
beyond Aperture with respect to the fundamentals of the raw conversion
process and basic image adjustments, yet Aperture has more "neat" end
user features. To me, the analog is akin to a Nikon D3s vs a Leica M9
... the D3s has way more automation and end user features where the M9
concentrates much more on basics and fundamentals. Both are very good
at what they do, so the distinctions in the end products can be quite
subtle. But they are there, and the two different cameras provide
choices in working methodology and capabilities that are quite
different, addressing totally different usage profiles.

> ... i'm also very sensitive to UI, speed, and workflow, but only
> practical experience will answer for me on those; i expect it to be a mix of
> better and worse than Aperture ...

I am too, and this is where Aperture has always fallen down for me. I
find its UI much too glitzy and disorganized, busy and distracting.
Lightroom's UI is much plainer, simpler and more subtle: it directs me
as to its intended workflow much more strongly as well. I nearly
always find myself wondering "now how the heck do I do this in
Aperture?" and diving into the documentation where I almost never find
myself needing to look at the doc in Lightroom. There are subtleties
to both that need explanation, but the basic Aperture layout doesn't
fit with my mindset at all.

Unrelated to photographic uses of the iPad, but I'm contemplating one primarily
for reading pdfs and note taking and composing and editing of simple text

You can download the Kindle or Nook apps and email documents to your
account. You can then read them in the app.

You can also use iTunes to add files to the Books section and when you
sync your pad, it'll add it to the iBooks app on your pad.

iOS has a file system; it's basically a single level of folders (like the
original Macintosh 128K); most apps organize their own storage so you don't
have to think of files, but several give you a fairly raw view of the file
system (and you can see it from iTunes when/if you sync to your computer); some
apps like GoodReader can interoperate with the files of other apps, and
GoodReader can transfer files over wifi, bypassing the cloud

for notetaking, you can explicitly turn off syncing for the default Notes app,
or use something like Nebulous Notes, one of several plain-text tools for which
syncing (to Dropbox in this case) is selective; or you could use Evernote
without creating an Evernote account which means nothing will sync anywhere,
but you can still take notes and organize them; Evernote's UI is pretty nice,
though i wish it had a plain-text option (like Nebulous)

there are many more options i haven't mentioned; in short, you can choose to
stay off the cloud (or to be very secure and selective in your cloud use); if
your uses are strictly limited to those describe, however, a simpler tablet (or
"e-reader" may be an option)

Hi Everyone:

These 5 pictures were shot with the iPad Air and rendered with the iPad Air.
The combination of photo apps used were Photogene, Snapseed, Vintage HD, then
just a bit of lightening in Lightroom when I imported them for upload to the
web.

I’m a more freeish bird now. I’ve completed some heavy work responsibilities
that I’ve had for the last two years—all gone now. Yes! Yes! Yes! I took a
walk in the park yesterday with my nephew, and it felt such a luxury. Speaking
of my nephew, Akira, (think portrait in PDML annual)—at the age of 13, he’s 5
foot 11 inches!

Shooting with the iPad was fun, but I did have some challenges. The daylight
glare on the screen was somewhat annoying, but I did get used to it, and it is
a bit awkward to handle—no camera strap, holding it steady out in front of you
and figuring out how to hold when not shooting can be clumsy. Still, it was
fun and a bit freeing. I aim to do more shooting with it for a bit of variety.

Daylight glare? Holding at arm's length? That's been resolved before.
You need one of these (including the tripod)

I think it would be really great if manufacturers added cameras to
other large and unwieldy objects. It would be so much fun to observe
folks taking pictures with, say, a big colorful beachball, or a
wheelbarrow, or a 4x8 sheet of 1/2" plywood.

#4 is interesting. Looks a lot like a photogram.

Re: OT: iPad Play

2014-05-15 Thread Bob W-PDML
Apple should sell an accessory for the iPad which helps you keep it steady,
like this
http://heritagephotoarchive.co.uk/img/s4/v63/p1131846004-3.jpg

and something to keep the sun off the screen, like this:
http://www.victorianpicturelibrary.com/images/preview/TP10-photographer-customers-scotsman.jpg

It would be an ideal example of inexorable progress, so I expect Amazon will
wish to patent it.

But I admire your picture taking as i have never taken anything to like

Hi Everyone:

These 5 pictures were shot with the iPad Air and rendered with the iPad Air.
The combination of photo apps used were Photogene, Snapseed, Vintage HD, then
just a bit of lightening in Lightroom when I imported them for upload to the
web.

I?m a more freeish bird now. I?ve completed some heavy work responsibilities
that I?ve had for the last two years?all gone now. Yes! Yes! Yes! I took a
walk in the park yesterday with my nephew, and it felt such a luxury. Speaking
of my nephew, Akira, (think portrait in PDML annual)?at the age of 13, he?s 5
foot 11 inches!

Shooting with the iPad was fun, but I did have some challenges. The daylight
glare on the screen was somewhat annoying, but I did get used to it, and it is
a bit awkward to handle?no camera strap, holding it steady out in front of you
and figuring out how to hold when not shooting can be clumsy. Still, it was
fun and a bit freeing. I aim to do more shooting with it for a bit of variety.

I’m a more freeish bird now. I’ve completed some heavy work responsibilities
that I’ve had for the last two years—all gone now. Yes! Yes! Yes! I took a

Shooting with the iPad was fun, but I did have some challenges. The daylight

Thanks, Steve! I once saw a gallery of work by a woman who shot with the iPad.
The stuff was beautiful--high contrast black and white still life stuff. Just
lovely. I was thinking of her work when I was shooting yesterday, though what I
did and what she does is, in fact, quite different.

Just had a chance to look at these. What's with the ringed trees?
Park people usually like things nice and tidy, so unwanted trees are
cut down. Ringed trees (I'm assuming the other trees in the
background are similarly mutilated) are dead and will fall down at
some point. Litigators 'r' us will have a field day if one piledrives
a granny into the dirt, as happens so often to poor W. E. Coyote.

Well yes and no, they can predict when and where collisions occur -
they should forget about the Large Hadron Blender, perfect their

i have a little experience, and have been planning a purchase of a 16GB
iPad 2 for my partner

the memory is not RAM, it's just the storage, so it really depends what
you'll store on there; video is the big factor, but still you can have a
few hours of good quality video (depending on compression used); photos,
music, most apps, are very modest in size so it takes a great many of
these to make a difference; i'd say unless you plan many presentations
with long video clips 16GB will probably be fine; in terms of running
apps or web apps the amount of storage won't make a difference in the
performance

also, at least in the US the resale values have so far been pretty good
(even for I when II came out), so if you are surprised to find you need
more storage, you could trade up without much of a loss

My partner is a "whole enchilada" kinda guy so I'm buying him the iPad
2 64G ATT network model.

My own needs are more modest. An iPad 2 32G WiFi-only will do me fine.
(I use a Verizon 3G MiFi on pay-as-you-go for a mobile hotspot, does
the same thing as having one or the other 3G cellular connect in the
iPad and services my iPod Touch and MBP as well when I'm out of range
of an established WiFi hot-spot too.)
