Dave, you just explained my life, LITERALLY. I have to order all of my film
from Photocontinental in Brisbane, which is a complete pain in the butt. I
order propacks by the dozen, which means CONSTANT mail ordering, and BIG
outlays of money at any one given time - a normal film order for me is in
excess of au$300, and I do this at least once or twice per fortnight. It
drives me completely in sane - particularly as I am a touch and see type
of person and I like to be able to browse everything that is available to
me, pick it up, turn it over etc, but with my film, I have to go by whatever
the salesperson on the phone tries to tell me. It also means that I have to
know at least 2 weeks in advance for all of my bookings to allow time for me
to order film in specific to the job. The only film I can buy in town is
Fuji Superior 100, 200 and 400, (which I have used MANY a time, when I have
been stuck), Kodak Select Black and White (which I HATE), and the new
Kodak High Definition (which only comes in equivalent to ISO 200 in
Australia, I *think*). ALL of my processing is also mail order, which means
it takes 2-3 weeks for my prints to come back from the time I sent them off.
Just had a nice surprise this morning, got back some prints from a shoot I
did on Frid. 21 Nov - exactly 2 weeks ago! Woohoo! That was QUICK by my

I too, have been considering processing my own colour negs at home, but have

It used to be usual for studios to buy their film in case lots direct from
Kodak. Kodak treated them just like they were a large photo store. I do not know

Use digital prosumer PS for 95 % of pics. Use film for wide angle,

Impact of going digital so far. Killed move to K mount. Howver, did

Near term will add following digital equipment: a small (physica size)

Well I own a 4 MP digital PS, but have basically been totally disgusted
with it's focusing, shutter lag, lack of decent flash power and no hot shoe,
lack of contrast, color, and sharpness, eating of batteries, lack of raw
file output, icky viewfinder and the LCD is totally useless outside in the
daytime. Did I miss anything? GRRR! So again I leave the digital at
home and only use it for selling stuff on ebay for the most part. Thus far
I've only found digital aggravating in performance and don't enjoy my
experience with this camera (Minolta Dimage s404). I have a hard time being
creative with it as I am with 35mm SLR's. I'm really unsure at this point
if I would be happy even with a digital SLR and since to finance such a move
I would have to sell my existing equipment it doesn't seem logical at this
point to me. My biggest concern here I guess is getting taken for the value
of my existing equipment in the future if prices continue to drop.

If I go digital at this point I would also have to switch to either Nikon or
Canon since I've not been impressed with the reports or results of the *istD
thus far and it is only a first generation camera as well. The pros seem to
think 6MP is enough, but considering the ppi's I get from scanning with only
2830dpi scanner generate a larger image you gotta wonder. If the canon 10D
price only had 10 true MP I'd bite I think. For right now I'm considering
switching to all canon or nikon though to get in line for it though. That's
gonna be tough though as selling my pentax equipment is going to be almost
like selling part of myself. Lots of memories there!

5) None of the above.

I've had a digital camera for over 3 years, but I still use film.

With a *ist-D in the camera case I expect the ratio to shift more
to digital, but I'll still have a film body with me. Not just as
a backup, and not just for the wide-angle shots; I sometimes take
the identical shot with film and digital; digital for immediacy,
and film in case I want more resolution for a large print.

am not sure which film i will end up with. i normally shoot Provia 100F with

because i needed the speed for the higher shutter speeds. now, if i am going
to shoot 400, i'm giving up enough anyway that i might as well just use the
*istD at 800 and give up a little less. i expect to shoot some Provia 100F

Tri-X (I'd go T-Max or Delta if I couldn't get the previous two). My needs
are simple. As I said recently, film continues to do everything that I ask
or need in a photographic sense, and the cost of going digital for me would
be prohibitive, as I'd need to upgrade computers and other peripherals along
with buying a digital cam.

RE: Silly Digital Survey

2003-11-29 Thread Len Paris
There are folks that don't want digital photos. I shoot film for them.
They are getting fewer rapidly. I try to shoot digital as much as
possible. I keep my PZ-1p for the folks that want me to use film. I
also have a few older film bodies that I have no intention of selling,
whether I ever use them again or not. They are just old friends, I'm
going to have a couple of them serviced soon, just to keep them in good
shape.

I have 4 camera bodies. *istD, 2 x MZ-S and an MX which was my first
SLR and I keep for sentimental reasons and for long exposures. So no I
 haven't.

I'm similar. *ist D, MZ-5n, MX, and a few film PS cameras. Those are
going to be sold (Yashica T-4 Super and Ricoh GR-1 if anyone wants to
make an offer before they hit eBay). The MX won't be sold. I'd sell
the ZX-5n, but the resale isn't very high on them and it is nice to
have a backup body.

I'd like to get back into BW at some point, and digital still isn't
what I want for BW.

 2) How many are in the process of doing so (like Bruce, who is actually
selling equipment) as opposed to thinking about it, which doesn't
 count in this survey.

I'm not even thinking about it with the current level of digital
technology. When we hit 24 megapixels with 3 colours per pixel, I will
 start thinking about it.

If I could get a *ist D with no color filter I'd sell off the rest of
my film equipment.

 3) How many have made the switch to digital, but keep a film camera
around for one reason or another, although you do not use, and have not
used, the film camera since acquiring your digital camera?

I have used and continue to use the my film cameras. They are
 different tools for different jobs.

I haven't used a film camera in about 3 years (when I bought my Sony
DSC-F707).

Still shooting film. Can't get enough resolution for my needs in Pentax
digital. Waiting for 10 megapixels, but will probably shoot some film
forever. Can't see giving up my Leicas or my LX.

Hey That's Me !!!

Since I got my *ist D, I haven't used my MZ-S, PZ-1p
or my old Super Program. (that I keep for sentimental
reasons since it was my first camera)
I have some film in the fridge, but I it's just
sitting there for now.

Sort of 3), but I have used my film cameras since acquiring the digital camera.
When I went out taking pictures of the pretty autumn leaves I took along
the 10D and the MZ-S loaded with Velvia. Haven't used the film cameras much
at all since June.
I also still own 3 MXes, an LX, an MZ-S and a 67. I'm not about to part
with any of them. If I did, it would be the LX and 67. I love me MXes.
