Spotmatic and MX literature FTAGH
Hi all I'm doing a bit of de-cluttering and found a load of my dad's stuff. His Spotmatics were stolen and he replaced them with a pair of MXs which I now have. There's the following: - Spotmatic F user manual - Spotmatic lenses and accessories brochure - MX brochure, large - MX brochure, small - K series lenses brochure circa 1981 - K series lenses and accessories brochure same date. There's a picture of an MX with a motor drive, bulk film holder and external powerpack. Most impressive. Picture here so you know exactly what's available: http://mitch.myzen.co.uk/PDML/_IGP5788.jpg Free to a good home. Contact me off list if you'd like any or all. I'm thinking I mail to you and you make a charity donation to Willen Hospice, which is close to our hearts. Something like that any way. Any takers? WTF! Always did, neophyte! > > Where's the metering on it?! IIRC, first you must have a battery in it. Then when you slide the knob on the left side of the lens mount/prism base up til it clicks, you have metering. Be certain to turn it off after you shoot. Don't forget, manual ƒ-stops. Unless you are in Auto on a lens that has that functional slide switch behind it's aperture adjustment ring, which keeps the lens wide open for focus, and isn't stopped down until you trip the shutter, which I think also trips the auto switch back to manual - maybe not. To set the ASA, lift up on the shutter speed knob and turn to the desired number. Shutter speeds will most likely be a bit, or a lot, slower than you set, by tradition, unless it just came back from CLA. The dial under the film rewind crank is just for notation of what kind of film, if any, is in the camera. To rewind when finished, press the button on the bottom of the camera in to disengage the wind mechanism, and crank the rewind knob (not too fast or the film will get static discharge lightning fog) until you feel the release of tension, if you wish to still have the tongue out, or until it goes fwap fwap fwap if you want it all inside the cartridge. > How do I even open the back to put the film in?! How the heck did they do > it back in the "old days" anyways?! Pull up on the rewind crank on the left (shooters positioning). Helps to use the crank handle by bringing it to the vertical position. Once film is in, push the handle/knob back down, maybe a little rotation until it's slips down into the fully down position. If you are unfamiliar with the white 'needles' film loading, you push the films tongue into the bottom part of the take-up reel between the needles. keeping the film against the advance gears with either a finger or just by tension you can impart with the rewind knob, make sure the film stays in the needles until the full width of the film is past the tongue on both sides of the sprocket gear, and not twisted in any way by having the sprocket holes one off on one side of the film, then just click the back shut, advance until a 'zero' (0) shows in the frame counter window on the advance lever hub.. > Crap, I'm spent, think I'm going to put it back in the display cabinet! Didn't work for me. I also tried wrapping one end of the lens in aluminium foil (so as to reflect at least some of the light back through the lens and aid the process). Still yellow. Agreed...not the kind of album one would expect from McCartney, but he does it well. I'm actually listening to it as I write this. Re: FS Fri: *Collectors Grade* Spotmatic F, Pentax Travel Kit with SMC Takumars, more...
Interestingly, the previous owner apparently immediately purchased a personalized bottom plate for his Spotmatic F. I've never seen one so well done before (letters impressed in the metal and the impressions are black enamel). The **original, mint** bottom plate was with the kit in the box that the personalized plate came in. So not even any marks on the bottom plate! Printing up a poster: Spotmatic II
I'm sending out a print order for a poster for myself and it occurred to me that others might like such a thing for office or den decor (do people still have "dens" these days?). The poster is based upon a relatively obscure SP II ad that ran many moons ago: http://www.antiqueauto.org/spii/ I'm having it printed on Endura Metallic (pearlescent surface). Prices below include shipping to the U.S. or Canada in a mailing tube. I'd be happy to ship worldwide, but would need to give you a quote for actual shipping to your country. Email me if you would like one. Since I'm sending in the order in this evening, only orders received and paid for by 10 PM CDT tonight will be printed. Your choice of sizes below. Please remember that the price includes shipping. 12"x18" . $29.95 16"x24" . $39.95 20"x30" . $49.95 (which I'm getting for myself) Drop me a line if you'd like one of the above sizes for yourself, or for your favorite Pentax afficianado. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

In my records there are more early Spotmatics with those four screws. The big difference here is the arm with the spot-metering cell. But I did write the seller about the discrepancy between his text saying the body was number 101 area (?) and the serial number on the body cap of 1010215. 1020215 is in the "101 area" (meaning "around 101"), isn't it? I know the caps get swapped out from time to time but to have the same "eye only P" engraved on it makes me pretty sure the cap is the teller of tales. Unless (Dario?) the cameras have the serial number engraved elsewhere, like under the baseplate or top cap. That 1010215 must be the S.No. No more serials needed. The motor drive version has the serial number engraved on top of the cap as normal, and it's 1233102, which leads one to think that the MD Prototype was made from an off the assembly line camera some tome after sales began. Or, it's just a used one from anywhere that replaced a damaged original top cap. Agree. The base plate on that babe is the only thing marked "MOTOR DRIVE". Like standard production SP MD's. I'm not thinking to compete on those items, but I'm very glad to see them and, as opposed to the immediate feeling developed here, I'm rather positive on the authenticity of those cameras, for a number of reasons including this one: www.dariobonazza.com/public/Spotmatic_1963_01.jpg Dario - Original Message - From: "Michel Carrère-Gée" To: "Pentax-Discuss Mail List" Sent: Sunday, October 03, 2010 3:49 PM Subject: Re: Spotmatic prototypes Le 03/10/2010 15:35, Michel Carrère-Gée a écrit : Unusual Spotmatic prototype on Ebay (2,000 $ !!) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270644059840 - Logo "eye", no AoCo - No name "SP" on top - Serial number on the back - No switch for manual use Other Spotmatic Motor Drive prototype: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270644059460 See links for large images. PJ, Well, not many people know that Herman Gouring made a secret trip to Japan in 1943. He shared lens and ariel photography expertise with the Japanese. I have a special Asahiflex camera that he was given to commorate the visit. My Uncle Bill acquired it when he served with US Army Counter Intelligence in Germany (Bavaria?) after the war. FS: Asahi Spotmatic SP, S-M-C Takumar 200/4
Two items: 1) Asahi Spotmatic SP (chrome) - recently replaced the foam seals on the door, body, and mirror stop. All shutter speeds are accurate. Meter works. Overexposes by 0.3-0.5 due to 1.5v battery (instead of 1.35v as originally intended). Body is in very good condition. Some rubs near the tripod mount (to be expected). Small mark on top of prism due to hotshoe adapter (also included, with new foam to protect prism). Self timer works. Asking $100 (EX condition at KEH is $133). 2) Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 200mm f/4 - very good condition with very minor marks around barrel. Focus is very smooth, as is aperture ring. Glass is in fine condition, some dust inside lens, but not much. Including front cap (original in excellent condition) Asking $50. Shipping from Canada. Estimate of $17 to USA for either item. Will provide exact quote if requested. Thanks. I don't know - maybe that was something optional, or maybe something that came out as an upgrade, or maybe even they were excluded after a flash on top of the camera was developed. Honestly, I have no knowledge of camera history, sorry! I just looked at my camera and noticed that the only thing to the right of the lens was my flash bulb remote...umm..thingy...so I just went on Google and looked around. rg2 On 8/26/07, Glen Tortorella <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Thank you, Rebekah. Although, I used to live in Western PA - beautiful area around there. If you're into shooting landscapes I envy you your surrounding environment. I can't stand the beach - all that sand! Anyways, if you ever take a day trip up to Pittsburgh (looks like it's about 4 hours away from you) there might be somewhere up there worth visiting. I'll ask my father, who's also into photography and would remember if there were any stores of note around there. And of course, there's all those wonderful bridges to photograph! rg2 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Hi rg2, Around here is northwestern Virginia--Front Royal. There is a photo shop in the "old town" section of Winchester, which is about a 35-40 minute drive from where I live. That is a hard one for these folks to understand. Actually camera stores as I remember them are few and far between. Decades back a camera store was run by a shutterbug for shutterbugs. They were not there for mom to drop off the snapshots of the kids to get developed, those went to the corner drug store (something else that has all but disappeared). It was a place for enthusiasts to shop. Want some exotic chemical to mix your own developer with? They had it. Need a series six to five point five step down ring? They had it. Want to handle a Hassleblad? They had one in stock. Then some corporate bean counter types realized there were a lot more moms shooting the new kid than enthusiasts, and that was the beginning of the end. The bought out the shutterbug type stores and used the name for a mall store. Enthusiasts can order from B&H or Freestyle and no need to stock all that expensive stuff that may only sell in a year or two. Turn over was the name of the game. Now the moms are going to Wal-Mart, they have turn over down pat, and the corporate run mall camera stores are disappearing. But I hardly miss them, they had very little that I was interested in. Unfortunately small things like that get collected in junk drawers until you die, and even if your heirs bother sorting through this crap, they probably get thrown out. That makes them that most wondrous of all things, items that are both rare and "apparently" valueless... On May 1, 2007, at 12:43 AM, mike wilson wrote: > plain matte fresnel > > I'm not sure what you mean by this. Fresnel lenses and matte > screens are two different things. I know that some cameras used > Fresnel instead of normal lenses under the screens for various > reasons. Is that it? Focuing screens look like a thin piece of ground glass, and they were once upon a time, but they haven't been made like that for many many years. The problem with ground glass is that much of the light impinging upon it off center is scattered away from the ocular making the center bright and the edges/corners dark. A lens is needed above the screen to redirect the light towards the ocular from the corners and edges. There is limited room in an SLR viewfinder for a thick correcting lens of this sort if you want a compact SLR body. So a clever idea was used ... A fresnel lens is essentially a curved lens surface that has been sectioned into a set of concentric rings, flat on one side, to provide the same refractive properties. A secondary benefit of the fresnel lens is that it reduces spherical aberration. So most focusing screens made since the middle 1960s are essentially a very finely sectioned fresnel lens with a matte finished flat side. The focal length of the lens is tuned to provide an even illumination to the ocular across its width and height. Focusing aids were embedded into the screen (split image rangefinders, microprism arrays, etc). Thus the term "plain matte fresnel focusing screen" for a simple screen without the focusing aids. Other designs to achieve the same thing have also been used. Hasselblad's "acute matte" screen is a development of technology that Minolta introduced first with their XD series cameras in the 1970s: it uses a set of moulded microlenses to achieve the required collimation. Other screens have been constructed with clear fresnel lenses (a non-focusing surface, but very bright), all microprisms (very fast to focus manually, but almost useless if the focal length of the lens being used deviates out of a narrow range for this the microprisms have been tuned), etc etc. Godfrey -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
