With a bit of research a name emerged: Nickolas Muray.
I have to confess that I hadn't ever heard of him before...

Neither had I, until his name appeared when sarching for some Marilyn Monroe

Then I found this George Eastman House collection with a selection of his

Thanks for participating, and congratulations for good work, however Perry's

Honour, Perry.
Honour and glory of being the first winner of the very first PDML Weekend

What greater award is there?

You also win my eternal gratefulness for bringing home this quiz the way I

You also found and provided exactly the same link I was going to submit to a

I have to confess that I do not think I ever heard of Muray before. I
did a google image search for the Dodge ad and spotted the Muray. I
first tried looking for the Dwight Eisenhower photo. I found the

Hi Paul,

Bob W. was also guessing Steichen might be the photographer.
But no, he's not. However Steichen is indeed one of the subjects posted.

As is Edward Weston, first suggested on by Bob W, also by Scott L.

I think I will have to apologize for some earlier misinformation.
I thought the photographer once was a member of the f/64 Group, but now I
can't get it confirmed.
I think I got him mixed up with his subjects.
Very sorry about that.

To make amends, and since time is running out for this Weekend Quiz I
will

- confirm the identities of posted subjects this far,
- add that he has lately got some attention by his relations with one of
the

subjects below, and
- add two more photos below. Not that they necessarily will be helpful in
identifying the photographer, but anyhow.
There is also a link to the thumbnails of the quiz.

I'll give it another hour or so, and then I will get back with the name
and

some nice links for you, unless someone comes up with the answer before
that.

Hi Paul,

Bob W. was also guessing Steichen might be the photographer.

To make amends, and since time is running out for this Weekend Quiz I will
- confirm the identities of posted subjects this far,
- add that he has lately got some attention by his relations with one of the
subjects below, and
- add two more photos below. Not that they necessarily will be helpful in
identifying the photographer, but anyhow.

There is also a link to the thumbnails of the quiz.

I'll give it another hour or so, and then I will get back with the name and
some nice links for you, unless someone comes up with the answer before
that.

No, not Stieglitz, Marnie. (Nor Ansel Adams.) Thanks för
guessing, I offer you this for your consolation:

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4049906

I'm starting to think it may be too difficult a quiz for the
list. I was thinking that by some of the subjects, someone by
chance would run into the photographer's name.
He's name is not that well known. Neither is my purpose to
promote him above any body else's favourite photographer. I
simply have enjoyed looking at a number of his photographs as
I happened to run into them.
He was however at one time member of a certain group of
photographers, which included some of the most influential
20th century photographers.
Just like many other American photographers, he was born in Europe.

Perhaps you're about to tell us that they're by Bob Capa, but they sure
don't look like it. Perhaps they are by Cornell.

Or, maybe they're by one of the following: Erich Hartmann, Thomas
Hoepker,

Erich Lessing.

But that would not explain why you can put your name to them.

I don't put my name to them.
Photo Net automatically does that.

I thought this was obvious and I clarified this in previous messages.
I didn't realize anyone would even think much about it.

He looks a little bit like Edward Weston. I have seen his
face, but I cannot place who he is.

My guess is that your father or uncle has the same name as
you, and took the photograph a long time ago. It is a superb
portrait, by the way.

I remembered where (I think) I've seen this face. It reminds me of the
self-portrait of Edward Steichen on the front of this book:
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/0500201870.02.LZZZ.jpg

So, it's an Edward. Weston or Steichen. That's my guess.

No "or":s will get you this honorary PDML Quiz Degree, nor just guesses.
:-)

However your reply IS interesting, and because of it I will throw in
another card and expand the quiz a little:

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4047943

The question remains "Who is the photographer?"

However, initially my advice was "Think twice!" - now it is "Think

Let's see if this will get you or anybody any further.

Ok. I realize this quiz is not an easy one and that you may just have to be
lucky to find the correct answer. I'll throw in yet a third card and see if
anyone by chance happens to know more.
(There are more cards (pictures) to play with, why I hope you'll be able to
find the correct answer before weekend is over.)

Let's see if the following link will help you. If not, till later.
Enjoy:

The subject is obviously Edward Weston. Considering it's in color,
the photographer is most likely his son, Cole Weston.

My guess is Edward Weston - the subject looks very similar to that of a
portrait made by Ansell Adams.

However, initially my advice was "Think twice!" - now it is "Think
thrice!" :-)

Let's see if this will get you or anybody any further.

Thanks,

If that guy in the picture entered the PDML-pub tonight, at
the mention of his name some members will take a bow at his
feet, some will immediately and automatically kick their
drinking habits (no I'm not implying anything here
:-) ), some will scatter their negatives and digital picture
files across the floor for the man to tread on, others will
say "Hi, take a seat and a drink. It's on the house", someone
will wet his pants and the rest will look at the whole scene
in amazement and say exactly what you said, Marnie. :-)

Btw. I noticed that (at least) two persons named in another
ongoing thread has been in direct personal contact with the
correct, complete answer to the quiz, and that at least Frank
Th. will be pleased by one picture at the link provided at
the end of this quiz.

Hi Bob, nice talking to you, it's been a while.
(I still have your negs and prints, good work, there will be a publication
some time somewhere, but I will let you know well ahead.)

Yours was one of the members names I was speculating on getting somewhere
with this quiz.

No. My family, or anything along such funny lines, does not enter into this
at all.

Btw. I'm sure you too will appreciate spending a minute or two at some of
the pictures at the link after the quiz.

Keep on thinking, anybody.
The honor of the winner will be great. You'll impress everybody. :-)

Thanks guys so far.

I was speculating whether anyone, and in that case on who on the list would
be able to come up with a complete and correct answer to the quiz.

If anyone is really game and isists, I might give out some other clues
(there are a few vague ones below).
At the end of the quiz, whenever that is, there will be a link to some
pictures that I enjoyed browsing and looking at.

And my quiz is: who's the subject? ;-)

Dario

Well, it's sort of part of the quiz. I won't tell you yet. :-)

Sez Lasse Karlson below the picture. Thats the answer I'm going with.

William Robb

:-)

I could impossibly not have shot that picture.
