RE: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?

2013-02-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I suppose I don't count because I am not a gear head. Other than the low ISO I
am so happy with my K10d...

But there is one reason I would want full frame: wide angle would be wide
again. My Zenitar semi-fisheye would be a "real" 16mm lens again.

That would be cool...

Subject: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?

I mean, aside from the obvious reasons like, bigger sensor, better image
quality, better use with lenses designed to work with a 36X24mm frame,
better lighting, better heating, better sewer systems, the roads (yes we
can't forget the roads)

Back in 2000, this camera came onto the scene:

<http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canond30>

and at the time, I was toting both the LX and the MX along with various
lenses and stuff. It was the first really 'affordable' DSLR and had I
not prevaricated for many months, I would have had one there and then.
Instead I waited to see what might be coming from Pentax - and so I
waited and waited. And nothing came.

And so in 2002, this came out:

<http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneosd60>

and I could wait no longer. I jumped.

It was made of creaky plastic and it felt not a patch on the quality
metal construction of the MX and LX, but shooting with it was amazing.
No film! It was about £2000 GBP at the time and the premium paid over
and above a comparative film camera would have kept me in FP4 for years.
But it was digital and it was instant - I had a grin that lasted weeks.

I had the D60 for a while, but longed for better build quality and
features - exactly what I found in the 1D mark II (aps-h...1.3X crop).
That was a camera that fully met (and exceeded) all expectations. If I'd
stayed in the game of carrying a big system about with me, i would have
without doubt moved onto a 1Ds (full frame).

As it is, I sold up when times were hard, and in fact didn't really miss
it all.

My son has a 1DmIIn and some lenses, and good luck to him. Nice to play
with for a while, and I still mount a Pentax lens on it now and again if
I need to do some portraits, but I'm happier with my lil Fuji.

So what if Pentax brings out a FF camera - would I jump? i might...but why??

Well, the answer will probably surprise you and some will ridicule. It
has to do with a certain lens...

I still have my A*85/1.4 and I long for the time I can mount it to a
proper 36X24 Pentax body - simple as that. I'd be more than happy with
just that lens attached the whole time - and just for portraits. Daft innit!

But there you go - that's the way it is. So much for the photographic
tools theory. I keep a lens that waits for the right body to come along.
Who'da thought it.

Of course. This idea that only guys with more money than they know what to do
with would buy a FF camera is a bit off-base. The fact that person A can afford
a product and person B can't, doesn't make person A frivolous or foolish or
egotistical as some have stepped around the edges of.

By most measures, if one is a crumby photographer, shooting FF has the
potential to make one's crumby images better from a technical standpoint, if
nothing else.

Buying the newest Corvette Stingray wouldn't make Paul Stenquist any more

Re: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?

2013-02-08 Thread P. J. Alling
I think I'd actually be more inclined to buy a Pentax FF DSLR if it were
24mp than 36mp. Especially if Pentax worked the same magic with that
sensor that they have with the 16mp sensor in the K-5. A 300 dpi, image
would be 13 1/3" x 20" in size if you printed the full frame. Assuming a
high definition screen of 100ppi, (yes I'm sure there are higher
resolutions but the math is easy), a 24mp image will create a 40" x 60"
image for display. The Diagonal on that is roughly 72" How many even
commercial and scientific venues have larger displays?

I'm not going to say who needs it, someone might, probably does, but I'm
pretty sure I don't. What I am more interested in is greater color depth
and exposure latitude. I'm still using a K20D, (hey times are tough and
I can't justify, even to myself, replacing what is a to me a four year
old camera that still does it's job), and lower noise. The larger sensor
with larger photo-sites would make those goals much easier to achieve.

On 2/7/2013 7:48 PM, Mark C wrote:

But the rationale really depends on the specifications of a new FF DSLR.

*IF* the sensor resolution / pixel size was comparable to the K-5 and
the image image quality was just as good, then a FF Pentax DSLR would
be an automatic for me. I could have the advantages of a full frame
DSLR when I needed them and crop down to APS size and still get
something as good as the top APS C DSLR. Of course, that would call
for a sensor in the 36 megapixel size.

If the sensor resolution was lower - like a 24 mp FF DSLzR it would be
harder to rationalize. Since I do a lot of macro and telephoto work,
the crop factor of the APS sensor comes in handy. For that kind of
work it is better to use a smaller / higher resolution sensor than a
larger / lower reoslution sensor. I would probably still get the FF
camera just to use lenses that I like and don't have in the APS format
- like fast normals (less than f 2.0) and the FA 20-35mm f4. But I am
sure that some of my old FF lenses will not but up to snuff on a
digital gear.

So -

1. A 36 megapixel FF I'd buy ASAP. It owuld replae my K-5 for
virtually all shooting since I could crop down to K-5 image sizes with
the same resolution.
2. A 24 megapixel FF I'd probably buy, but I'd alternate between the
K-5 and the the FF and probably do a lot of work with the K-5 still.
(Maybe this path would get me to buy a K-5IIS also.)
3. If Pentax came out with both a 24 megapixel FF and a 24 megapixel
APS body I'd provably buy the APS body. Maybe come back for the FF later.

Absolutely. IMO, there are two major reasons for buying photo stuff. One
is, like e.g. Dave Savage, who had very specific photographic needs and
who *knew* that FF camera will fulfill these needs. Another is like you
say - because you wand and you can. Both reasons are 100% legit and none

At this time I am perfectly happy with Ricoh and 50 mm module for my
main tool and with K-5 and Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 for DSLR/backup.

I have acquired(*) the Ricoh M-module which I plan to use with K-mount

keep using the K-mount ones on the M-module.

Having experienced the brilliant quality and small, light and most
convenient package of Ricoh, my desire for FF DSLR has evaporated.
Therefore it is unlikely that I will buy any FF camera, including that
of Pentax.

rangefinder focusing capabilities of the M9 body. So I fully
understand the business of hanging onto a lens waiting for the right
body to come along for it.

The reason I still have the GXR—aside from the fact that it itself is
just a brilliant camera in every way—is that it is an excellent TTL
viewing/focusing camera for macro and tabletop work, better IMO than
any SLR or DSLR. Now that Leica has introduced the new M with all the
goodness of the M9 and the addition of Live View and EVF options,
buying one of those might well consolidate all my needs in this domain
into one camera.

Of course, I still like to work with different cameras anyway. But
mostly in film where the differences are much more striking and
compelling.

I'm there as well. My first camera is a K-5, and the backup is a K-7. I had
thought of replacing the K-7 with a K-5 II. I don't really like the K-7. Too
noisy even at 400. But if I can use the FF camera in place of another K-5, it
will work for me. I have some FA lenses, so for some jones I could use the
whole frame. And I think the 60-250, which is my workhorse for car shoots, is
supposed to cover full frame. Even if it just comes close, it would give me
more flexibility, when shooting in somewhat tight quarters.

But if the FF is not the camera I need it won't matter. The K-5 is just fine,
and all my clients are more than happy with its results. It's just a tool.

A considerable portion of my photography in the past 5-7 years
had to do with the situations of low light (often combined with the fast
motion): dance photography [and most recently, - photography of a small
child].
For that reason, one of the technical parameters that I've been
interested in has been the high-ISO performance. About 3 years ago,
I somewhat seriously entertained an option of buying Nikon D700.
It was a very reasonable tool for the "job". (Especially, compared to
the K-7 that I was using at that time.)

However, a considerable portion of the photographs that I take are done
while I am traveling. Since 1998 and until recently, I've been fitting
all my shooting travel kit (except for the Gary Fong lightsphere) in
a LowePro Nova 3 bag (two of them over this time span).
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/279078-REG/Lowepro_2037320_Nova_3_AW_Shoulder.html
(Unfortunately, this bag is no longer available.)

Typically, this kit included a Pentax camera body
the largest compact flash (Pentax AF 500 ftz, and then Metz 58 AF) and
3-4 lenses, depending on the trip.
Most recently, those have been:
FA 50/1.4, DA* 50-135/2.8, and then either Pentax 18-250
(if the travel doesn't involve dance photography) or
Pentax 17-70 with either FA 77/1.8 or Sigma 28/1.8.
You'd be surprised, I can fit all that in this relatively small bag.

(When I travel by car I can take a large Tamrac System 12 which makes
it more convenient to work as well as fitting more lenses)

D700 is so much larger than K-7 that I decided
that it wouldn't be convenient to take it with me on the trips
(I wouldn't fit my camera and the minimum set that I need in that same
bag, ...).
And that even in case I would be willing to spend that much.

So, in the past year or so, I've been waiting for the new Pentax camera
to come out, and I was not sure if I wanted it to be an APS or a FF.
On one hand, a FF would potentially provide a higher quality high-ISO
capability. On another hand, even if I expect (almost subconsciously)
Pentax to have a smaller FF body (compared to Nikon or Canon), it would
still likely to be larger than K-5*.

If a FF came out instead of K5-II*, it would've been sort of a "need".
But if FF comes out on the market soon, in order for me to consider it,
it would have to offer a vast improvement over the K5-IIs.

Of course. This idea that only guys with more money than they know what to do
with would buy a FF camera is a bit off-base. The fact that person A can afford

By most measures, if one is a crumby photographer, shooting FF has the
potential to make one's crumby images better from a technical standpoint, if
nothing else.

Buying the newest Corvette Stingray wouldn't make Paul Stenquist any more
desirable to women, but if he had the money and that's what he desired, I
wouldn't begrudge him the pleasure.

I'll probably own a D600 before Pentax comes out with thiers.

If I *needed* a full-frame camera I'd have bailed on Pentax a long time
ago. I do understand that this is something I want, rather than need.

But that doesn't make my wanting it any less valid.

I mean, aside from the obvious reasons like, bigger sensor, better image
quality, better use with lenses designed to work with a 36X24mm frame,
better lighting, better heating, better sewer systems, the roads (yes we
can't forget the roads)

Back in 2000, this camera came onto the scene:

and at the time, I was toting both the LX and the MX along with various
lenses and stuff. It was the first really 'affordable' DSLR and had I
not prevaricated for many months, I would have had one there and then.
Instead I waited to see what might be coming from Pentax - and so I
waited and waited. And nothing came.

And so in 2002, this came out:

and I could wait no longer. I jumped.

It was made of creaky plastic and it felt not a patch on the quality
metal construction of the MX and LX, but shooting with it was amazing.
No film! It was about ?2000 GBP at the time and the premium paid over
and above a comparative film camera would have kept me in FP4 for years.

Re: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?

2013-02-07 Thread DagT
I think the only thing that would make me buy one is if they stopped tanking
the 16x24 format seriously, and stopped the K-5 type camera. And then I might
as well jump to something else, like Fujifilm X.

The files I get from K-5 are big enough, ISO are good enough, DOF is suffiently
shallow and I like the compact camera and lenses. My old A* lenses work well.
So why would I want a larger camera and more expensive lenses?
