Re: Progress on the incognito case

2021-08-10 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I've never driven a train, but I had an experience that came close.

On one of our trips to Switzerland, we took the Glacier Express to Zermatt
and then local trains to Montreux. My travel agent friend had connections
with German Rail, and booked me on the Crystal Panoramic Express from
Montreux. The trains on this route are special trains with bigger windows
that are almost completely transparent so one does not miss any scenery.

https://www.trip.com/blog/there-is-a-journey-called-the-panoramic-train-journey/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoldenPass_Line

Our tickets had the car and seat numbers on them; I found what I thought
was the right car, but there were no seats to match our tickets.
Eventually, the conductor looked at our tickets and opened the front of the
car, which I had assumed was the engineer's compartment, where there were
four seats in the absolute front of the train, with nothing but glass
ahead, to the sides, and overhead. (The engine was in the rear of the
train.

There we sat, mesmerized, as the train zig-zagged up the mountains, with
views of Lac leman, Mont Blanc, the Alps, the Jura, and one quaint Swiss
ski resort after another. There is no rail to compare with Swiss Rail, not
even the Rocky Mountaineer.

I once recited (a version of) that poem to a friend, but as it turned out it

It's not my job to drive the train,
The whistle I can't blow.
It's not my job to say how far
The train's supposed to go.
I'm not allowed to pull the brake,
Or even ring the bell.
But let the damn thing jump the track
And see who catches hell!

Re: Progress on the incognito case

2021-08-06 Thread Larry Colen
On the subject of going full engineering nerd, my brain keeps coming back to
how to make one of these as a “real product”. I really ought to be wasting my
time in a more productive manner. Some of y’all might be amused by the thought
experiment.

I’ve been doing more tweaking on the design ideas. The Pentax 645 mount has
a diameter of about 61mm. That means that you could make plates with p645
mounting flanges, then make Pentax K-mount back caps that have 645 lens side
flanges on them that would lock into the plates. You could also make back caps
that fit other lens mounts, Nikon etc. that also mounted into the plates.

I’m beginning to realize that you would want the mounting plates to be of
different sizes and hole spacing depending on the diameter of the lenses and
sunshades. Probably half inch increments from 2.5”-4.5”. You might also want
some sort of way of elevating the lenses, maybe the equivalent of extension
tubes, maybe something that is just a storage area under the squares (store
filters?). There would also be a need for spacer plates to make up the
difference when having mounting plates of different sizes adjacent to each
other.

It would ultimately also need ways of holding lenses on their sides, and
ideally ways of making them pretty much drop ins for pelican cases.

Ive made progress on my incognito lens case. Im not completely
thrilled with the layout but it seems to be pretty close to workable. Id
like to improve the mounting of the tray for the small primes so there is more
functional storage underneath it.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/4xx9sQvo2FUeL6kNA

I should figure out how to make dividers, and maybe put some soft foam on the
underside of the lid to help keep things in place.

What Id really like to do is 3-d print back caps that had tabs on the
outside, and basically make bayonet mounts for them, so that I could latch them
into the hard case, but when I wanted to put them in a smaller camera bag,
Id take out the lens, back cap and all, and just go with that.

The famous, largely unschooled, English Canal Engineer, James Brindley,
designed his canal systems mentally while sitting in a darkened room.
His famous Bridgewater Canal featured aqueducts over rivers which
ultimately ended the monopoly of the river boat transporters in the
Birmingham area. Then came the railways which put paid to the narrowboat
traders but the canals live on for recreational purposes!

That’s an idea, though if I were doing that I could glue a body cap to the back
side of the back cap, and that way I could latch the lenses in with either the
custom cap, or directly without the custom cap.

It turns out that 3-d printing isn’t too expensive if you have a friend that
can do it for you.

How about this...use a bayonet body cap mounted bayonet up in the case
and use a double rear lens cap on the lens.  Lens fits into one side of
the double cap and the other side captures the bayonet body cap.  Will
probably cost about $20/lens but might be cheaper and certainly more
available than something 3D printed.

When I was traveling for business, I had a Halliburton case that had thick foam
inserts that I cut out to receive and isolate lenses and bodies. Worked well
for me for over 18 years - a lot of rough handling and no issues with damage. I
believe Halliburton use to offer replacement inserts for sale - you might try

I’ll probably end up going that way, but I was hoping that there was an easier
solution. Between the home refi falling through, mom dying, losing my job,
problems with unemployment, the current crop of home repairs, my laptop
computer crapping out, it looking like I’ll need to drive back to Oregon for my
second vaccine jab next week, and a few other less pressing issues, I had
really hoped that someone would be able to point to something like a $3 plastic
tray at bed bath and beyond that would work perfectly.

Why not do what Pelican do?

Get a piece of strong material/fabric/whatever, form a pocket/envelope from it,
fill it with some sort of padding material, and sew or glue it shut.
(I'm sure you know _somebody_ with a commercial-grade sewing machine!)

For extra credit add flaps with Velcro fasteners and make movable dividers.

I checked out the glasses box at Uhaul, it was awfully flimsy, and for $16 I
could make something a lot better if it came down to that.

The first bit of foam I tried didn’t work so well, too much dust. I also don’t
have hole saws that are both wide and deep enough for cut a 6” piece of foam.

I’ll continue poking at different options.

U-Haul sells boxes or many varieties. One version is designed to store/ship
glassware. Another version is designed to ship wine. You can buy the glassware
inserts separately, I am not sure about the wine inserts. But it might be worth
a trip to your local U-Haul to check it out…

It’s about the size of a pelican case, and about 1/8 the cost.

I’m interested in any feasible suggestions for making dividers that’ll hold and

I actually collected a few of those for pretty much exactly that purpose.

My ideal would be a monolithic piece that held everything. Or maybe three
trays for lenses of different diameter ranges.
