wireless flash on older bodies
Hey, gang! Stupid question time. (I know. There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.) Thinking about picking up a second AF-360 or a 540 for wireless flash on the K100D and, hopefully, the 645. Digging through the 360 manual, the wireless flash instructions reference only P-TTL. So what are my options with the 645 - one on the body, one on a stand? Will I have to set both flashes manually? Will it work at all? Once that's done it might go in a sleeve, but sometimes I'll scan it first. And if I get lazy it might not make it to the sleeve and I'll find it under a pile of dirty laundry or in a toy box 4 months later. If it makes it to the sleeve it's probably safe. That sleeve under the buffet is twisted a bit. And I think there's one in the Megan's room, but I'm not sure. If I'm really ambitious I'll label the sleeve with a Sharpy. The sleeves that don't get used as baby doll blankets or drawer liners might go into a binder. I think I have at least 3 binders around here. At one time they were for color, BW and slides. But the BW and slide binders filled up fast and the color stayed mostly empty, so the color binder became a catch-all for empty sleeves and then for BW and slides that wouldn't fit in the appropriate binders. I think I know where they are. You might think that once a roll makes it through the gauntlet that it's relatively safe. Not so. I might take it out to scan it and this process could start all over. I hope that helps, Dave. Some places i hear you need to put a piece of electrical tape on the metal contact of the receiver as to not short out the 360, and other places i hear its not necessary. Just a bit nervous to try it. Besides, the shoe on the receiver is tight, and i'm thinking a piece of tape might make it hard to get the flash on and off. Those have been a consideration, but I'm interested in keeping P-TTL with the K100D. I think a second 360 is probably my best bet at this point. OT - for our British friends (long)
Just in case you're in the neighborhood. Date: Feb 7, 2008 7:10 AM Subject:GLOSS WARMTONE GIVEAWAY AT FOCUS 08 Hi ILFORD PHOTO friends, Just letting you know about an imminent giveaway from our sister company HARMAN PHOTO. It's basically you're chance to experience their new inkjet paper which - like the other papers in the range - offers a look, feel and level of quality that has led many people to describe it as being the closest digital alternative to a darkroom print they've ever encountered! Their words - not ours! Anyway, here's the press release GLOSS WARMTONE GIVEAWAY AT FOCUS 08 Visitors to Europe’s largest annual imaging show will be able to pick up free samples of the eagerly awaited fourth paper in HARMAN’s pioneering inkjet range Following hot on the heels of its GLOSS FB AL paper which was greeted by global acclaim in 2007, HARMAN PHOTO (the inkjet brand of pioneering imaging specialist HARMAN technology Limited) is about to launch a warmtone version of the product. HARMAN PHOTO GLOSS FB AL WARMTONE will be officially available in UK stores at the end of February and to celebrate, the manufacturer intends to give away 2,500 free sample packs of the paper on its stand (Stand C2, Hall 9) at FOCUS ON IMAGING 2008. Those fortunate enough to pick up a pack at the event, which runs from the 24th to the 27th February at Birmingham’s NEC, are in for something of a treat. The eagerly awaited GLOSS FB AL WARMTONE will continue HARMAN technology’s tradition of supplying the photographer with true fibre base inkjet papers for high quality giclee printing. Set to be available in A4, A3, A3+ and A2+ (17x25) sheets, as well as 17”, 24” and 44 rolls, it will offer all the same benefits as the brand’s GLOSS FB AL paper but with the added inclusion of a warmtone tint for photographers looking to create black and white prints with creamy whites and velvety blacks. Plus, for the first time ever and in direct response to customer requests, HARMAN PHOTO will be offering the paper in 25-sheet packs not just at A2+, but for A3 and A3+ sizes as well. In addition, and like the rest of the HARMAN PHOTO range, which also includes MATT FB Mp and MATT FB Mp WARMTONE, the new paper will be manufactured entirely at HARMAN’s dedicated production facility in Mobberley, Cheshire, enabling the company to maintain consistent – and high levels of quality. Even more notably, the new GLOSS FB AL WARMTONE, like its sister products, employs photo fibre Baryta. Widely associated with premium quality silver gelatine papers such as MULTIGRADE™ FB (which is produced by fellow HARMAN technology business ILFORD PHOTO), Baryta is a special coating that is traditionally applied to a fibre photographic paper base prior to coating with the emulsion layers. The technical benefits of the Baryta layer include greater detail and definition, extended tonal range and excellent archival properties. In addition, Baryta coated fibre papers have a unique look and feel which have become the standard for fine art photographers worldwide. This fine art feel is further enhanced by the paper’s weight. At 320gsm, the GLOSS FB AL WARMTONE enjoys a strong resemblance to a traditional photographic print – a fact that has led to the other HARMAN PHOTO papers receiving praise from photographers across the world time and time again. Aside from these benefits, the GLOSS FB AL WARMTONE also employs a unique nanoporous Alumina coating. This ensures a smooth gloss finish that really brings both colour and black and white images to life. An additional feature is the use of new and revolutionary anti-curl technology, which ensures the paper lies completely flat, both before and after printing. Speaking of the new product, HARMAN PHOTO Marketing Director, Howard Hopwood, said: “At HARMAN technology, we’re every bit as passionate about photography as the people who use our products. As such, we understand that different photographers have different desires, tastes and aims when it comes to producing prints. To accommodate these diverse needs we are committed to offering a complete range of analogue and digital media and the new GLOSS FB AL WARMTONE is an evident example of this.” “We are confident its impressive performance and ability to deliver superior results will make it an instant hit with both amateur and professional photographers alike.” For more information on HARMAN PHOTO, visit www.harman-inkjet.com For more information .. He wrote, knowing that he wouldn't live long enough to see the changes digital would bring to photography, but with a curious interest in the new technology, and a wistfulness that he wouldn't get a chance to see it mature. So yes, I am quite certain that Ansel Adams would have not only used digital, he would have embraced it, and I think digital would have been better off for it, in the same way that film was much improved by Ansels's advice to the film industry. Yep, I laughed at the ignorance of that line too. At the George Eastman house you can see a video of Adams in the last years of his life, working with students and talking about his enthusiasm for electronic photography. At the time, it was analog, not digital (basically still video), but he quite openly states that he sees it as the future and he's clearly excited about it. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Scott Loveless http://www.twosixteen.com/fivetoedsloth/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I said that when I went digital I wouldn't stop using film, that I'd continue to use my film cameras for serious shooting as long as they continued to be functional. I got my *istD in (I think) April. Haven't bought a roll of film since. I took my Leica out one day and I think I only shot one or two frames - gosh, I can't just snap away at will, this is costing me money now! - and haven't used it since. I love film, still think it looks better (nothing beats TriX!) but I can't see using it again. Didn't take long for me to make the full conversion. At least Kodak waited for me to go digital before they decided to shut 'er down... When Christie and I got the 750z I think I made a statement along the lines of I don't see a need for color film, anymore. Christie got a K100D right after they came out and I started reaching for that for quick snapshots. (I still do.) Shortly thereafter I got a K10D and used that exclusively for several months. I certainly can't complain about the camera. What I missed was the black and white process. Saint Ansel referred to it as donkey work. I also missed the tactile aspects of film in general - putting slides in the trays, sleeving the negatives, etc. Editing on a computer screen sucks, at least for me. It's even less fun when I have to scan those slides and negatives, but at least I get to do the touchy-feely part of photography that I really like. I no longer own the K10D. I suppose the end result should be the driving factor, and that the stuff in the middle shouldn't really matter. But for me that part in the middle is the most fun. A slight correction/confirmation. It looks like all of his Harrisburg photos were taken on February 1st, 1941, as were some photos from Pittsburgh. He couldn't possibly have spent too much time here. He was in Delaware the day before. The notes for one of the photos taken between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh mention a Superhighway. He was probably traveling by car along the PA Turnpike. Scott Loveless wrote: This is looking north along 10th St. http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/cushman/full/P02174.jpg And this one is looking north along South Cameron. http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/cushman/full/P02175.jpg The notes for those photos indicate he shot them from one of Harrisburg's high bridges. The only existing bridge that he could have possibly taken these from is on Mulberry St. There are some photos of the camera equipment he used at http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/cushman/overview/cameraEquipSlide.jsp?page=1 and it looks like he carried a 50 and a 135. It appears that the photo of Cameron St. was probably taken with the 50, and the photo of 10th with the 135. Near the top left of both photos, just beyond the stacks, are two columns. These columns are at the west end of the bridge on State St. The Pennsylvania Capitol building is just to the west of their location. Ann and I did a little shooting under the State St. bridge just after GFM last year. Just for giggles, I'm going to hypothesize that he traveled along Mulberry, which turns north-west approaching the Capitol building, and probably took these photos on the same day within a very short period of time. This photo looks northwest along 4th to the Capitol. http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/cushman/full/P02176.jpg The Alva restaurant is still there and is very popular. The local bike club ends their Sunday morning rides at the Alva. 4th St. is still one-way, in the same direction the photo indicates. The train station is one block east and the Alva has entrances on both sides. This is fun! I'm going to get some K64 and try to reproduce these. Sunday morning in DC report
Howdy. Mike B. (Beaker) made the trek to my hotel Sunday morning and we ventured to the Meadowlark Nature Photography Expo, which was only about 4 miles away. Therein we found a Zeiss booth. The rep had one PK mount lens on hand - the 35/2. Very nice. It's quite similar in appearance to the Voigtlander that was discussed on list recently. In other words, very nice. http://www.meadowlarkphotoexpo.org/index.html I hadn't planned on doing any shooting while in the DC area, so I only brought along the 750z. Mike had the foresight to bring two cameras along, so I shot a few frames with his K100D and an Isco-Gottingen 50/2.8. This thing is tiny. Even smaller than the Pentax 40mm lenses. This is from the Kodak publication E-88, Kodachrome 64 and 200 Films. The KODACHROME Film family is characterized by sets of image dyes which perform very similarly when scanned. The scanner operator can set up one basic tone scale and color-correction channel for KODACHROME Films, and then optimize the tone scale and gray balance for the requirements of individual images. Re: Scanning and tone scales
Mark Roberts wrote: Scott Loveless wrote: This is from the Kodak publication E-88, Kodachrome 64 and 200 Films. The KODACHROME Film family is characterized by sets of image dyes which perform very similarly when scanned. The scanner operator can set up one basic tone scale and color-correction channel for KODACHROME Films, and then optimize the tone scale and gray balance for the requirements of individual images. Would someone mind translating that? Please assume that you're talking to a moron. Thanks! Sounds like it means If you set up color management with a proper profile you'll get consistent results, though the wording is so strange I can't be sure. Since it's about Kodachrome it may have been written before the argot of color management was widespread enough to be understood by many people (including the person at Kodak who wrote the above). Actually, since it's about Kodachrome, it may have been written before movable type was invented. Did the document have hand-drawn illuminations in the margins? The publication is actually dated 2005. I figure the bulk of it was written long before then, and simply updated later with references to scanning. I rarely wyld be shooting more than a half dozen negs a day, and it just seemed silly to fire up the processor for such a short run. I never had any complaints from customers, and the film (I was using PanF+) seemed immune to the grain clumping that one would expect from this sort of mistreatment, and always printed at a reasonable filtration of ~30-50M. I have a roll of PanF in the fridge. I'll try it. But you were probably using 4x5 negs, weren't you? The massive dev chart suggests 5 min at 72F (22C) for Dektol 1+10 and Tri-X exposed at 400. Everyone else already has one, and now they're trying to figure out how to unload it _before_ the K20 hits (to maximize their returns) but not be without a camera during that time. Re: In the same Pop Photo Issue...
William Robb wrote: - Original Message - From: Jack Davis Subject: In the same Pop Photo Issue... There is, also, a Michael McNamara article in the March issue titled, Digital Wins. To make his point that digital noise is a less grainy image than is that made with film of the same ISO rating, he displays two thumbnail images. He chose 1600 ISO to demonstrate. The film image is a scan of Fujicolor Superia and the digital image is that made with a K20D. His point is certainly confirmed when the comparison is made. (have a magnifying glass at hand) ;) As soon as the film is scanned, the comparison becomes irrelevant. Scanning introduces a lot of issues such as grain aliasing and other artifacts. When someone makes an optical orint and compares it to a digital print, then they are making a valid comparison. Having said that, I owuld be very surprised if a 35mm film print of any speed of film would look as good as a print from a 14mp SLR shot at the same ISO. Re: Peso Drive by drive in

Our speed limit is 35mph max so this one was a bit easier to pan, and its actually quite sharp.:-) http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6964666 Closed up drive in. Love drive in's even if they are closed. Hi, Dave. This one looks a bit gray to me. I think it needs more contrast. Other than that I really like it. It's probably closed for the season. It looks well maintained and the flag is in good shape, as far as I can tell. It seems that the handful of remaining drive-ins aren't doing too bad. -- Scott Loveless http://www.twosixteen.com/fivetoedsloth/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
