Re: OT - Home Theater Advice?

I have an old Cambridge SoundWorks 5.1 System that I bought in 2001 in
a bundle with the then highest spec'ed SoundBlaster Live! Platinum
ultimate blablabla... it has all the ins and outs I need and supports
all kinds of setups so I'm pretty happy. I'm sure there is better than
that today with surround having long ago made it to the mass market
but if you can get one used you'll be happy.

Re: What's the advantage of DNG?

2010-11-23 Thread eckinator
Another aspect that should be mentioned is that camera makers' RAW
formats are all proprietary across the board and altered from time to
time behind the scenes. Whenever a camera maker may at some point
choose to discontinue support for a certain version of their RAW
format or one of their given RAW formats altogether people may have to
convert all of their images in order to be able to keep viewing and
processing them with newer versions of the software of their choice.
Or even worse, there may not be a converter because a company may go
belly up without having had a code escrow implemented for their RAW
standard so that the standard may just perish along with its maker...
disclosed standards are always preferable IMO - another reason to
prefer Pentax

Re: Benbo Trekker Mk3 Compact Tripod

2010-11-24 Thread eckinator
Still working on that test pic but missing a piece of gear to make it
happen. Basically (for lack of a gear driven upside down center column
or macro arm - sorry but I sold the tripod that gave me the idea a few
weeks ago) trying to achieve 3-D mobility with a combination of macro
rails and an L bracket. IMO trouble with the Benbo is too many things
are unlocked at once. What is your subject height range? Can you see
yourself carrying an extra kilogram of macro rails in exchange for a
lighter, less versatile tripod?

no doubt about that and I'm sure the members of this list love what
they shoot enough not to litter all over it... I'd like to think
though that a rechargeable battery has a better primary energy and CO2
balance because of the fact that it doesn't have to be recycled
between uses making it the better option by far

Re: HSM -- Restart?

2010-11-26 Thread eckinator
I posted something a few moths ago that sparked the usual discussion
among the informed. the verdict was that the pentax tech was not
telling the truth. I don't care who ultimately knows better but the
pentax tech said to leave it on a powered on camera for some time
without trying to make it focus and then to exercise it manually for a
bit. according to the pentax tech this technique will work if the
drive hasn't failed but is electrically discharged from sitting on a
shelf for too long and needs recharging plus also some help with
overcoming stiction. heck, you could give it a try =)

Re: HSM -- Restart?

the 16-50 has screw drive alright but when SDM dies it won't default
back to screw drive on a body that supports SDM.

pentax says they're aware that people are complaining but defect
ratios do not differ significantly from other product lines. assuming
that is true it doesn't make things better for those affected but
speaks volume about the i'net as a negative multiplier

what is so bad about that? I'm trying to make it policy to always
carry a camera plus refconverter and as much as I prefer the 16-50
over the 18-250 the former sometimes lacks on the long end. 18-135 is
still not ideal but it has WR which the 18-250 doesn't and I don't see
my dream zoom on the horizon any time soon.

true but he shares that deficiency with millions of people who've lost
their grasp of prices =/

> He mentions a nit, the reversed positions of the focus and zoom rings

I politely disagree - I have four lenses each of Pentax and 3rd
parties and I'm likely to buy it nonetheless - not for another year
though :[ position of rings would be the least obstacle in my book -
the crappy tiny focus ring on the 18-250 didn't stop me either

now Pentax if you could please make that DA* 11-16 reality and follow
up with a DA* or WR 16-80 or17-85 or 20-100 or whatever - heck, I
might even be tempted to extend my always carry policy to a small bag
and a second lens and flash

Ned, are you listening?

Cheers

at 100K exposures shutter life and assuming early adopter prices, i.e.
$1650 by example of the K-5 that works out to 50 bucks per keeper in

I'm sure though there has to be more keepers than that.

the funnel explanation isn't that bad really - if you look at the
definition of the circle of confusion (sounds kind of like a secret
round table for politicians) on this page
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/depth-of-field.htm (close
the prompt to register for a newsletter) you'll find that DOF comes
from a much similar effect - I'm at a bit of a loss for a better
imagebut the general idea is that closing the aperture cuts out the
stray rays so to say
dang... tell them that after a while it becomes intuitive knowledge
and you're too deeply involved in your art to explain it to an
outsider

enablement question

2011-01-26 Thread eckinator
some time ago I inquired here about off camera flash cords/adaptors.
the other day I finally picked up on eBay a kit consisting of four
older Pentax hotshoe adaptors (same pinout as my K10D so I hope they
should work regardless of their age), two flash sync cords and a
novoflex unimarm flash holder plus two pentax af-220t older a-ttl
flashes. i intend to sell the unimarm which will fetch at least 70% of
what i paid, probably more but i am not sure about the af-220t - can
anyone comment on these units, are they any good for use with pentax
film slrs or are they better sold off?
thanks in advance

does your oven have pyrolytic cleaning? if so just put in the empty LC
every couple of months and burn it clean. they take it very well.

Re: What gear is on your "short list"?

serious hint. I have a 380 V siemens oven and I regularly use it to
clean/refresh old cast iron cookwares. pyrolytic self cleaning goes up
to 500 degrees celsius. they look (and sell) like new afterwards.
actually knowledge gathered from a US web site about the dutch oven et
al. le creusets will also work great directly over a gas burner so the
enamel will handle the heat just fine.

totally. my non-stick goes up to 270 °C
btw I checked and some Le Creuset wares only go up to 190°C so they
seem to use different coatings

exactly. they come out a nice dull grey (even lustre black once oiled,
tres sweet) and take new seasoning very well.
