[Phono-L] Vic O record cabinet
I have not seen a record cabinet specifically for a Vic O. I have a catalog for The Cabinet That Matches and it shows record cabinet for models 1 through 6 but not the O. But that does not mean that they don't exist. A few years ago I bought a record cabinet at Union that I hoped was for a Vic O. The cabinet had trim around the top so I knew it was made for a specific machine. When I returned home with the cabinet I was disappointed that the O did not fit. Thanks to our friend, Harvey Kravitz, I was able to complete a Col BZ and it fits perfectly. I have excellent copies of the Cabinet that Matches that I am happy to mail for $7 including postage. It's a great reprint that shows the Victor Junior through the rare Victrola XX and Auxetophone as well as flowered and brass belled Victor horns. Jerry Blais ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
[Phono-L] Styles of the VV-XII
The first style XII is a little plainer than the later XII. The doors over the horn are very thin. The later XII has a bit of fancy trim that runs around the machine under the lid and the doors over the horn are slightly taller. I think the model was made for slightly over a year and production must have been quite evenly split between the two styles. I think the mechanical parts were the same for each style. I think it's very interesting that when Victor introduced less expensive table model Victrolas, like the table model X and slightly later the IX, the top of the horn was open and the motor sat in the horn. Any noise produced by the motor came out through the horn. It must have been an effort to use up the more obsolete motors. One does not normally find evidence where Victor blatantly sacrificed quality and performance. Wouldn't it be interesting to sit in a meeting where these decisions were made by Victor executives? [Phono-L] Victrola XII motor
The casting of the XII is totally unique to that model but aren't some of the components like the spring barrels and governor common with other motors of the same period? If you're going to buy a reproduction Cygnet and have it painted, why not have Gregg Cline paint it in an oak woodgrain? [Phono-L] Edison Army /Navy DD
I really like my Army/Navy machine and would think $800 for a complete example in good shape would be a good price. I have owned three since I started collecting. The last one was purchased from Peter and it went to a Portland friend. I remember reading a story about Edison donating one to be used on an air ship. The first time the air ship docked, the Edison was left behind to reduce weight. I own three Diamond Disks, an A-250, a long play console, and the Army/Navy machine. If I could keep only one, it would be the Army/Navy machine. All examples that I have seen have been army green, like mine. Has anyone seen a blue machine? [Phono-L] CAPS
I'm glad to have an open discussion about the sale and I think it's healthy. The club did a great job. There were plenty of sellers providing a variety of items at very good prices. It was simply a buyers market and buyers did not open their billfolds very often. I thought attendance was OK and I'm glad to read that it was a bit higher than last year. I noticed new faces late into the sale. I did close a couple of sales but it was difficult and probably not worth the effort. The sale of my Edison Standard B (2 min only) was a good example. I paid $175 for the machine, refinished the case (decal materials about $20 plus several hours effort), repaired the belt tensioner (another hour), disassembled the top works to clean oil (another hour), and provided a reproduction 14 horn ($20). My out of pocket cost was $215 with at least five hours of labor. I sold it for $280 very late in the sale. I attempted to sell a Vic I for a friend and it was priced at $725. It had a nice original finish, the parts were all original right down to the slotted crank and little brass bell horn. The nickel finish on the old elbow and tone arm were not great but at $725, the machine should have flown out of the sale. The price was prominently displayed but buyers did not even make an offer. You can't close a sale if there's no sale. Is there anyone on this list with a nice Vic 1 that they'd sell for that amount? The buyers were just not buying. I'll be back next year and hope things are better. Thanks to CAPS for a great effort and thanks to the vendors for a good selection. Thanks to the buyers... well, thanks for nearly nothing! ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org
[Phono-L] What Did You Think Of CAPS?
I attended CAPS last weekend and wondered what others thought of the show and banquet. Here's my thoughts... I thought the sale was well attended by sellers which provided a very nice selection of machines ranging from entry level to something for the advanced collector. I saw Berliners, Vic VI, Vic C, Rigid Arm MS, lesser Victors, Victor School Models, Edison Opera, Edison Concert, Edison Triumphs, several Homes, Standards, Firesides Gems, Columbia BII, Grand Piano Graphonola (incomplete), and many other brands and models. There was a large rear mount mahogany Zonophone with a matching mahogany Music Master horn priced at $2200 and I don't think anyone seriously considered it. Buyers, including the dealers, simply did not pull the trigger on many purchases. I saw a Victor School machine with a sold sign and believe a Vic III with oak horn sold but very few high end machines sold. I wasn't everywhere at once and I'm sure I missed things but very little left the building. In my immediate area, I know of a Standard and an Amberola 50 which were sold by dealers around me. I sold a 2-min Standard B with a reproduction 14 horn for $280 (1970's prices!) and a very clean oak Victrola IX (with new springs and rebuild reproducer) for $300. I had an all original Vic 1 priced at $725 for the last half of the sale with no serious lookers. On the plus side, the banquet was great. Charlie Hummel, assisted by Mike Khanchalian, talked about the discovery of the only known Multiplex Grand cylinder and partial mechanism. The cylinder was inside its metal tube but broken into several hundred pieces and mixed with broken pieces of other concert cylinders. Mike, the Record Doctor, has been working on the cylinder for months. We were able to listen to a recording of the first few inches of the giant cylinder and it was nothing less than thrilling. Charlie talked about collecting in general and he is always full of... well, Charlie is simply full of it and the great stories of a long time collector. He even wore a tie! Also on the plus side are the friendly people at CAPS. The club has made a great effort to welcome visiting dealers and buyers. What did you think?? [Phono-L] Edison Picnic Six Pack
Every 4th of July I take my Edison Gem B with 24 gearing and about six cylinders wherever we celebrate the 4th. The Gem is a pleasure to pack around but the cylinders are a nuisance. I was thinking how easy it would be to make a device to carry a small number of cylinders and make them more portable. Every time I'm in an antique shop and see the little tin Coke carrier, I think how nice it would be to have something for cylinders. I would make something lightweight but sturdy out of wood with a handle on the top. I have an idea on design but I have not priced the raw materials. How many cylinders would you like to carry this way...6?...8? or ? If it could be made for $25 would you be interested? Any comments would be appreciated. [Phono-L] About Union
The Thursday parking lot pre-sale was always fun but I don't think it was a real problem. The problem was created by early buyers that showed up in the parking lot, opened their vehicle and started selling. Some sellers simply showed up in the parking lot, sold items, and then went home. The Donleys received nothing for their efforts and investment. Another problem were buyers and sellers that showed up on Wednesday then Tuesday and even Monday. The Donleys use the facility for other events and the parking lot was partially occupied by phono nerds. The solution was to end Thursday parking lot sales. I visited the Church sale as a buyer and it was hardly more than a social event. There were maybe six or eight sellers and sales appeared dismal. I saw a few dollars exchange hands for a Gem horn and that was about it. I doubt if it survives. Unless I'm blackballed from Union, I won't go back. If you think about it, everyone has the same chance to make a great buy when the show opens early Friday morning. That seems fair to me. It is missing the needle cup and the knob on the motor board and a little veneer is lifting so the price is only $125. The other is a smaller upright mahogany Edison Diamond Disk. It is full of Edison records and works fine. It is missing the hardware that limits the door from opening too far and it's missing the ID tag. The price is also $125. Both will be available at our garage sale next Saturday in Albany, Oregon or call 541-990-0781. Thanks, Jerry Blais ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org
[Phono-L] Brass Horn For Sale
I have an all brass cylinder horn that's 29.5 long with a 13 bell. It needs to be polished but is in overall good shape. [Phono-L] Vehicle
I've been thinking about a new phonomobile and I'm leaning towards a Suburu Outback. I'm also attracted to the VW Passat diesel wagon. I've owned a couple of VW's and even my diesel Rabbit was fun to drive. I drove it to CAPS a couple of times. Once I removed the back seat so I could deliver an L door Victrola. There was room for the Victrola as well as four or five horn machines, luggage and Mike Stitt. Jerry Blais ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org

[Phono-L] Andy's VV-XVIII
I enjoyed Andy's story about the Victrola XVIII. I thought about my XVIII. I plunked down big $$$, brought it home, dusted it off, and placed it in my collection. Nice, but no great story. I am fortunate to have found an early VTLA at a good price and a fun story. I would estimate that the two machine have a similar value. I love the VTLA and appreciate the XVIII. The good story is the difference. Happy Collecting, Jerry Blais ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org

It has existed for over thirty years is supposed to be one of the largest record conventions in the country. Most of the dealers were selling pop, country, jazz, etc. LPs, CDs, 45s post-war 78s T-shirts, posters, etc. A couple of dealers had mainly classical LPs CDs.One dealer had a whole box of Bob Wills other Western Swing 78s. Two or three had some 1920s-1920s jazz and dance band 78s, mostly in less than pristine condition, some over priced given their condition. A cracked Gennett New Orleans Rhythm Kings 78 was marked $ 150! But, especially on the last day, prices may in some cases be negotiable. No Edison diamond discs or cylinders.I picked up a group of 61 Hit-of-the-Week 78s in varying conditions for $ 100. In the past, more early discs cylinders as well as the occasional antique phonograph have been offered but the convention seems to be narrowing its focus to post-war music. Therefore, it probably is not of great interest to those on Phono-L.A few visitors, mainly Asian, in town for the convention, visited my used record shop, Immortal Performances, bought rock, soul, jazz, world music, EZ classical LPs a few 12 dance singles. Best to all, Robert - Original Message - From: Peter Fraser pjfra...@alamedanet.net ok, folks, enough jingoism - please. we're all grateful to the veterans and others who have put themselves in harm's way on our behalf, but can we keep it separate from the often ill-conceived (or worse) policies that created the harm in the first place? as for me, i'm thankful and proud that we've democratically replaced a dangerous crackpot and avoided the continuation of his foolhardy policies, and now have an opportunity to restore the lost respect and regain the lost trust the US once enjoyed on the world stage. and through that we'll regain more safety than any number of troops could ever secure. to get back on topic, while also giving an example of how some things never change, now i'm going to pull out my copy of James Gerard's record, Loyalty, on the Nation's Forum label. he was the US ambassador to Germany prior to the US entry to WW1. you can listen, too; just click here: http://tinyurl.com/5vuotg here's a transcript: Loyalty I know that it is hard for Americans to realize the magnitude of the war in which we are involved. We have problems in this war no other nations have. Fortunately, the great majority of American citizens of German descent have, in this great crisis of our history, shown themselves splendidly loyal to our flag. Everyone had a right to sympathize with any warring nation. But now that we are in the war there are only two sides, and the time has come when every citizen must declare himself American -- or traitor! We must disappoint the Germans who have always believed that the German-Americans here would risk their property, their children's future, and their own neck, and take up arms for the Kaiser. The Foreign Minister of Germany once said to me your country does not dare do anything against Germany, because we have in your country 500,000 German reservists who will rise in arms against your government if you dare to make a move against Germany. Well, I told him that that might be so, but that we had 500,001 lamp posts in this country, and that that was where the reservists would be hanging the day after they tried to rise. And if there are any German-Americans here who are so ungrateful for all the benefits they have received that they are still for the Kaiser, there is only one thing to do with them. And that is to hog-tie them, give them back the wooden shoes and the rags they landed in, and ship them back to the Fatherland. I have travelled this year over all the United States. Through the Alleghenies, the White Mountains, and the Catskills, the Rockies and the Bitterroot Mountains, the Cascades, the Coast Range, and the Sierras. And in all these mountains, there is no animal that bites and kicks and squeals and scratches, that would bite and squeal and scratch equal to a fat German-American, if you commenced to tie him up and told him that he was on his way back to the Kaiser. and now that i've got that out of my system,

[Phono-L] Edison cylinder record cabinet. Questions???
I recently purchased a cylinder record cabinet that I plan to resell. It's a one door cabinet and behind the door are four pull outs with thirty pegs at each level. All 120 pegs are there and the original finish on the cabinet it excellent. Right in the middle of the door is an Edison decal that looks like a 1970's or 80's variety with the curved dot over the i in Edison. I was ready to remove the decal when I noticed that it was applied over a previous Edison decal. Did the Edison factory market and sell cabinets that were identified as Edison cabinets? (You'd think after 35 years of collecting, I would know the answer to my question!) Thanks, Jerry Blais
