Re: [Phono-L] CAPS
Dan, All fair points. I must add that I do rely on local dealers like Ron Haring to help out on occassion. He has some nice items I have looked for at fair prices. BUT, one last example (cuz this one's my favorite)just to prove my previous point based on my personal experienceI picked up a Hexaphone model 103 for $8000 that was proven to be in the hands of Clarence Ferguson at one time. These are always at the shows for at least $10,000. Not a killing, but a good deal. So, although things can seem "unlikely", dreams and a little patience (and perhps luck) do come true. I have an extensive collection of advertising signs but have never even found one locally (well I have found a couple at a quarterly antique show full of out of town dealers in my city). And to find a $1500 lamp phonograph seems like a very unlikely occurance. But, things do come up occasionally for better deals at estate sales and such. I can't see how you could really fill out much of a collection with local buys. At least not in my area. Without knowing others that bring things to my attention and access to the quality that are at the shows, I wouldn't have much of anything. So, yes it would be wonderful to find everything locally for great prices. But, in my experience those deals are few and far between. I agree with your comments Abe. I am one of those "purpose" buyers and get very frustrated that items I seek are sometimes already sold when I get into the show. I don't get the early pass or anything, but I can briskly walk the aisles and find something I would have paid X amount more than it already sold for, but it was either traded or sold outright to one of the other dealers prior to opening the show to the general public. I'm not much of a fan of the "retail" part of the shows.Ron -Original Message- From: Abe Feder To: Antique Phonograph List Sent: Wed, Aug 18, 2010 1:30 pm Subject: Re: [Phono-L] CAPS Hi All, While my view of the show was a short one-I drove in from Mesa Az. with my wife to pick up a machine that I had bought from CL in Portland that Jerry was kind enough to go look at and haul to the show-and turned around in an hour or so and drove back-I think it is just a reflection of what is taking place in the economy. I paid $175 for the machine, refinished the case (decal & materials about $20 plus several hours effort), repaired the belt tensioner (another hour), disassembled the top works to clean & oil (another hour), and provided a reproduction 14" horn ($20). My out of pocket cost was $215 with at least five hours of labor. I sold it for $280 very late in the sale. I attempted to sell a Vic I for a friend and it was priced at $725. It had a nice original finish, the parts were all original right down to the slotted crank and little brass bell horn. The nickel finish on the old elbow and tone arm were not great but at $725, the machine should have flown out of the sale. The price was prominently displayed but buyers did not even make an offer. You can't close a sale if there's no sale. Is there anyone on this list with a nice Vic 1 that they'd sell for that amount? The buyers were just not buying. I'll be back next year and hope things are better. Thanks to CAPS for a great effort and thanks to the vendors for a good selection. Thanks to the buyers... well, thanks for nearly nothing! ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.oldcrank.org

Ok, I will wait to hear from you on it. Hi Abe I was at the third table from the end on the back wall (near the snack bar). I was the one that had the Victor Schoolhouse with the smooth oak horn (still have it, unfortunately - it didn't sell). I sell with Mike Sorter, he was a tall guy with a lot of homes and standards. We had two tables, then Nestor Guzman was at the last table nearest the kitchen (by the chairs and tables). Were you next to Stan Spate? I am sorry to have missed you! [Phono-L] CAPS Show & Sale
Hi Jerry i had a great time too. I almost didn't go because I had such a heavy schedule this weekend, but I paid for a table and my friend Mike convinced me to come. I grabbed about one box worth of good cylinders, and a Columbia Grafonola, which was all I had ready to sell, and I ended up almost selling out! Comparing that to the last two years when I have taken several nice machines and only sold maybe one, and that makes this year's show great. I did hear from several that they thought it was slow, and I did see many dealers packing up early, but maybe the slower pace was what made it great. I only see some of these dealers and collectors once a year, so there's a lot of catching up to do. There were some very nice machines there this year; Pat Jones had made a haul and brought some really nice stuff in. Also the Oliphants had their usual mixture of stuff, and I noticed that their prices were especially good this year it seems. I bought an absolutely gorgeous Diamond Disc A-250 from them (the one that looks like an Amberola 1A for a fantastically low price. It is a real jewel of a machine. It also has the horn painted to look like mahogany, and it didn't have any grille cloth originally. I removed the new grille cloth that had been tacked onto the back, because the horn paint is extremely well preserved. There were lots of cylinders, 2 minte and 4; last year I don't remember there being many 2 minute wax at all. I bought about 15 or so, an some Diamond Discs. There weren't as many parts this year, I don't think, and the Wyatt's weren't there, unfortunately. Charley Hummel was there, and Tom Hawthorne, it is always nice to see them, and of course Jerry Blais! Good show all around. [Phono-L] CAPS Show & Sale
I've been attending for quite a few years and I felt this was one of the best. Lots of old friends and lots of old phonographs. The banquet on Saturday night was the biggest ever, with well over 100 people attending. Robin and Joan Rolfs came in from Wisconsin and gave a very amusing presentation on phonograph dolls and toys, and Nipper. In fact, their presentation intrigued me so much that when I stumbled upon a combination 'Ragtime Rastus' and 'the Boxers' phonograph toy in the original box early Sunday morning I immediately bought it. I blamed them for provoking me to spend money I hadn't planned on! But that's one of the things that makes these shows so much fun. You never know what small (or large) treasures may turn up, and it's always a treat to learn new things. All it all it was well worth the long drive and I'm already looking forward to next year. Best regards, Rene Rondeau

Hi all! This was the busiest show I have ever had for restoration work. No end of cylinders to restore, reproducers to renew, and while you wait phono restoration to perform. As always I enjoyed great fellowship with so many dear friends like Joan and Robin Rolfs, Charley H., Tom and Virginia Hawthorn, John Levin...and on and on it goes. Outstanding banquet and presentation by Joan and Robin..only bummer was that the Moxie soda ran out too soon!! Best selection of great Phonos, records, smalls etc. that I ever remember at the CAPS show. Bravo! If you have never attended, what are you waiting for??!! Dr. K. (cylinder doctor)

Ditto to what everyone has said about the CAPS show. What a great banquet and presentation as well. After hearing (and seeing) everything Joan and Robin Rolfs had to say, it convinced me that I too, like Rene, was intrigued enough that I am going to buy some phonograph toys--especially some dancers--for my 2 and 1/2 year old daughter. This will be her Christmas gift. She loves to dance in my phonograph room--listening to cylinders, music boxes, playing with the horns and winding up anything she can!! She will simply go wild over the dancing Rastus or anything else I can find! [Phono-L] CAPS report
Hi All I am sure many will submit a CAPS show report, so here is my 2 cents. I was a dealer again this year, for perhaps the 5th or 6th year in a row. I have been attending CAPS shows for about 15 years or so, since they were held in the first hotel in Fullerton. Crowds have come and gone every year, and this one was no different. What I did find odd was that there seemed not to be near as many people this time as last. Many other dealers shared that opinion. I don't know if there was competition for other large events, or what. I did see a lot of record and machine sales. though for the first time I only sold one machine and traded another. Normally I will sell 3 or 4 machines during the course of the show. There were a good number of very nice machines, disc and cylidner, most notably an Amberola 1, a Regina Hexaphone with oak horn, a couple of Victor VIs; a very nice Victor IV with mahogany speartip which went for $2400, I believe; a very nice Opera at $6500, three Credenzas, three maroon Gems (one of which I bought-no horn or lid, who can help me with this problem??); an Edison Diamond Disc B-80 with matching disc cabinet for $595; a very nice littl Columbia AT for only $450; a Columbia BE (which I bought); and many other machines which I am sure will be reproted on here. The pricing seemed to me to be within reason, with some high prices as usual. The star of the show in my opinion was Ekkehart WIlliams with a dearth of beautiful machines and parts. Notwithstanding my crappy hotel room and lack of sales of machiens, it was a fun show, and the best part is seeing all those friends who you only see once a year (Nice to see you, Jerry and Stan!). [Phono-L] CAPS show
I just wanted to pass on a note about the CAPS (California Antique Phonograph Society) show last weekend. It was really a nice show. I found the people very accomodating and we had the opportunity to see a couple of nice private collections that were outstanding. Hospitality abounded. I believe all the out of towners were made to feel very welcome. I was there with several folks from Oregon. The banquet was also really great. There was a slient auction, a great dinner and then a talk by Renee Rondeau about Tinfoil machines with a really outstanding demo of a real edison tinfoil machine! What a rare thing to experience. The show was not huge, but there were a lot of machines and related things available. I got a late Vic 1 and a late Vic 2 both for what I thought were very reasonable prices. Another in our party bought a really nice Columbia BJ with a matching wood horn. Another bought a really nice Trademark Berliner. Really nice machines. Just thought I would pass my thoughts of the show along. Dan
[Phono-L] CAPS Sale
I am starting to recover from the two thousand mile round trip from Oregon to southern California and the CAPS sale. I sold three out of the five machines that I took and the group from Oregon purchased some very fine machines including a Columbia BJ with mahogany horn, Berliner, Victor I (big case), Victor II, an unusual European machine, and a small tin machine. My big purchase was two original Victor posters. While there, we were invited to see two terrific collections and the experience was wonderful. The banquet was exceptional and featured a talk on tinfoil machines by Rene Rondeau. The CAPS sale was dealer friendly and my overall experience was very positive. Jerry Blais

The show was about par. A few rarities, a handful large machines, tons of records and one movie star. The banquet was great, as the speaker was well versed in Edison's life history, focusing specifically on personality traits. Extremely interesting and worth the price. >From: Peter Fraser >Reply-To: Antique Phonograph List >To: Antique Phonograph List >Subject: [Phono-L] CAPS show report wanted! >Date: Mon, 23 Aug 2004 17:35:27 -0700 > >Gang - > >Remarkably, not one posting has arrived telling us how wonderful, or >crappy, or whatever-in-between, the CAPS show of a couple weekends ago may >have been. > >So what gives? did anybody go? Littlefield Richard DeLombard Nigel Burlinson Dudley Delany On a personal level, one of the reasons it took so long to update this time is that my company has transferred me from Oregon to Dallas, TX. I had been flying back and forth for awhile, then moved to a new house in Plano, Texas, and then it took me a couple months to get online. We drove across the country (which the company paid for) and all our stuff was moved (paid for again by the company) including 1 records. 9994 of which made it safely. The only loss of any significance was a Gene Ammons on Chess. One benefit is that I finally have a "record room" and can truly organize my records. But sorry Lennick, still haven't found the one you need. The anti-benefit is that now I don't know any collectors in the immediate area. I hope to be able to meet fellow record / phonograph collectors in the Dallas/Fort Worth area soon. Are the any informal gatherings / trade shows in the area? [Phono-L] CAPS show report wanted!
Okay, maybe I'm biased since I'm now editing the CAPS journal, "The Sound Box," but in my opinion it was an excellent show in every respect. The CAPS show seems to be growing steadily, and it is now equivalent in size to the east coast shows (Union still dominates all of them). It is also attracting more and more out of state visitors every year. What makes the CAPS show so much more special than the others is the "early buyer" opening on Saturday afternoon during setup, and especially the banquet on Saturday night. No other group does such an entertaining and informative event. The banquet is a great opportunity to relax and chat with friends. The quality of the meal itself has improved significantly in the past couple of years with a new caterer handling it. It's pretty remarkable considering they serve 100 people! What really sets the banquet apart is that each year a speaker is invited to give an informative presentation. This year's guest speaker was Jack Stanley, director of the Menlo Park Museum in Edison, NJ. Jack is incredibly knowledgeable about Edison, and he gave a hugely entertaining talk about Edison -- the man versus the myth. I'm sure everyone in attendance will agree that it was a sensational presentation. The show itself, like others of its kind, offers something for everyone. There were huge amounts of records, all sorts of parts, and machines ranging from common fixer-uppers to gorgeous high-end showpieces. In short, it was a lot of fun. The CAPS board, and especially Bruce Peterson who handles most aspects of the show and banquet each year, deserve kudos for the great job they do. The banquet speaker from the Edison site was outstanding. I encourage all to put it on your calendar for next year!! It's always the second weekend in August.
