Thanks for the quick reply.

A shame it's not easily fixable (although, obviously, if it were you'd
already have done it).

But set against how generally excellent MS is, it's small potatoes*
(it's not often I need to browse into Server Settings).

In the Android webview wrapper, if I go to "Server Settings"

37734

and then open the dropdown menu, the text size on the menu is huge,
compared with that on the main UI.

37735

It's also not themed the same — ie, it's black on white, rather than
white on black — but that's less of a UX issue for me; I'd just like
much more compact menu text.

(Apologies if this has been raised previously. I did search the thread,
but couldn't find anything relevant.)

It would be absolutely fine. An HDD's an HDD so far as the RPi is
concerned.

> Also is there any benefit to doing this.?

Depends on:

- what RPi you have — ie, whether it supports USB 3.0 (RPi 4) or not
  (other RPis)
- the spec of the external drive you're currently using (ie, is it USB
  3.0?).
-

If your RPi only supports USB 2.0, then there won't really be any
benefit, as that will be the limiting factor, regardless of the HDD or
enclosure specs.

If your RPi supports USB 3.0 (ie, it's an RPi 4) and you get an
enclosure with UASP SATA 3-to-USB 3.0 , then it will achieve faster data
rates than an external HDD that's just USB 3.0.

> Also dont I need a adaptor to use it due to its size.?

Not quite sure what you mean. You just put the HDD in the enclosure and
there'll be a USB cable that comes out of it which goes into your RPi

You just need to add "flac" (without the "" marks) under Disabled Audio
File Extensions (Deaktivierte Audiodateierweiterungen), at the top of
the Settings>Advanced>File Types page.

You don't need to set the FLAC decoders to deactivated, as those
settings won't be used, since LMS won't index the FLAC files once you've
disabled that extension and therefore won't need to decode any.

I have uninstalled Custom Browse, restarted LMS, and done a "clear &

selected, audiobooks are still being listed in "New Music", which isn't
what I'd expect (unless "New Music" is wrongly/misleadingly named?)

It's not exactly a huge problem, but it's definitely puzzling me.

Additional Browse Modes Library Views Not filtering 'Music' & 'Audiobooks'

2022-02-19 Thread SpiderJon

I have enabled "Create an Audiobooks library view..." in the 'Additional
Browse Modes' plugin, with the appropriate tags entered in my audio
files.

As expected, I get a 'views' menu on the 'My Music' line:

- All
- All Music without Audiobooks
- Audiobooks

And the Audiobooks, Authors, Album, Artists, etc, categories all work as
expected (ie, they only contain what they should). Yay!

However, if I select the "All Music without Audiobooks" view, there are
still audiobooks listed in the "New Artists" and "New Music"
categories.

And if I select the "Audiobooks" view, the "New Artists" category
contains both authors and music artists.

Any/all suggestions for what might be amiss greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks for such a quick and helpful reply.

The problem* was entirely unconnected with your excellent BBC Sounds

the BBC Sounds plugin retrieving data from the BBC site and from signing

However, when I go to the BBC Sounds settings, it says

\"YOU ARE ALREADY SUCCESSFULLY SIGNED IN, YOU CAN SIGN OUT BY PRESSING

\"[SIGN OUT]\"

But if I click the button (to see if signing out and back in again sorts
things out), I get

\"THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH SIGN IN, PLEASE TRY AGAIN.\"

Trying again just results in the same error message.

The server just does that -- it 'serves' the file to the player.

There may be differences in functionality (UI, etc), but so long as the
server provides the bits efficiently, as far as native formats go, there
will be no difference in sound quality.

And even with server-transcoded formats, unless there's something
woefully lacking in the code, I doubt most people would detect a
difference.

There *may* be differences due to how the bits get from the server to
the player -- WiFi, wired, USB, BT, etc -- due to factors like
electrical-noise interference. That said, you'll find enough
contradictory opinions out there about which medium is better/best to
suggest there's not really much underlying difference.

The player -- the DAC -- the thing that turns bits into analog signal --
is what counts.

At the risk of a crude analogy, it's like editing a document file that's
stored on a file server. It doesn't matter what OS the file server is
running on, it's the word processor (player) you use to edit (play) the
document (audio file) that will make any difference that matters.

Many thanks for adding this.

Any chance it could be tweaked to "*All *episodes", rather than just
"Next episodes"?

That way you could access, well, all episodes in the series (eg, if you
wanted to replay a previous one).

It wouldn't add any clicks to listening to the next one, since "Next
episodes" generates a subset of "All episodes" anyway.

Tricky decision. I know whichever one I suggest now, I'll end up
thinking I should have suggested the other one (cf. wishing you'd
ordered the -other- thing in a restaurant).

More seriously, though, I think I'd opt for adding "All Episodes", as it
enables playing the next episode, but adds greater flexibility — eg, if
you've since heard the next episode elsewhere (on DAB, say) and want to
skip to the one after. Or maybe replay the previous one.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce : BBC Sounds Plugin

2021-11-17 Thread SpiderJon

Scenario - I've reopened LMS (with Material Skin) after having listened
to one episode of a series on BBC Sounds — so I see what's in this
screenshot.

36183

I now want to listen to the next episode, but clicking on the "Next
Track" button merely restarts the current episode (I'm using LMS with
Material Skin on a laptop) and the "More" menu for the episode doesn't
contain any links that go there.

36185

So, my question is — is there any quick/simple way of now getting from
the individual episode to the series 'homepage' — i.e.

36184

and/or direct to its "All Episodes" page?

The only way I seem to be able to do so is go to my main "Music Sources"
home page, and then go down through the "BBC Sounds" menus, which seems
a bit of a roundabout route.

In the BBC Sounds app, for comparison's sake, I could just click on
"Next Track", or else on the series name and then "See more episodes".

Apologies in advance if I'm missing something really obvious.

A "Stop playing after this track" option would be nice — functionally,
it would be equivalent to "Pause after this track", so the remaining
queue would be preserved.

It wouldn't have to be added to the Track pop-up — it could just be a
button alongside, say, "Clear Queue".

(cf. "Stop after current" in foobar2000, which I've always found
handy.)

Just in case it's of any use diagnosing the issue, I just went straight

And the time remaining was counting down from 30:00, too.

No, it's definitely *New Artists* — it's generated by Custom Browse,
which I now realise may be part of the issue, as I don't know if
Material Skin takes that into account. (It's been there so long I'd
forgotten it's not core-LMS.)

The same thing. On

Home > BBC Sounds > My Sounds > Subscribed

it says "Items 1 to 31 of 31" in the footer bar, but there are still
only 30 programme entries.

And clicking on the "Next - 30 to 41 of 41" link at the bottom left
takes me to

Home > BBC Sounds > My Sounds > Subscribed > Next - 30 to 41 of
41

but only the same 30 programmes are listed, and it still says "Items 1
to 31 of 31" in the footer bar.

(I had checked before I originally posted, to determine whether it was a
problem specific to the BBC Sounds plugin or just with Material Skin,
but forget to mention it - apologies.)

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce : BBC Sounds Plugin

2021-06-26 Thread SpiderJon

When I go to "My Sounds > Subscribed", it says

35073

However, there are only 30 programme entries on the page.

Then, at the bottom of the page it says

35074

But when I click on it, it doesn't go to a new page — it stays on the
same one, with the same 30 (not 31) entries.

(I have checked on the BBC Sounds site -
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/my/subscribed - and I -am- subscribed to 41
things.)

Also, clicking on the "Next - 30 to 41 of 41" link keeps adding an entry
on the dropdown menu when you click on the top 'navigation bar'.

35075

What additional information can I provide to best help diagnose what's
going wrong?

Thanks.

Not sure about iPlayer vs Sounds (I stopped using iPlayer a while ago),
but I do find that the volume level can vary quite markedly between
different programmes in Sounds.

In some cases it may be a "perceived volume" issue (eg, different
dynamic ranges between music and speech programmes), but I think some
programmes (esp. some podcasts) are produced at a higher volume.

Just as a follow-up, the easiest way I found to use the Sig Gen plugin
is to take the URL mentioned in that thread and then, using the Default
interface, paste it into the "Tune in URL" text entry box under "Radio",
and hit play.

You can then manually edit the URL to get the desired waveform, signal
frequency, sampling rate, bit depth and volume.

Signal Generator Plugin where does it install to?

2021-04-13 Thread SpiderJon

Hi all

I've installed triode's "Signal Generator Plugin".

It's listed as being installed on Server Settings > Plugins, but doesn't
have any options.

I'm assuming it should have its own page somewhere in the LMS interface
— on which you can 'start' it and set the test tone frequency — but I
just cannot find it.

TIA

I don't understand how having to open the top-level menu, click on
"Information", and then click on "Server Settings" or scroll down and
click on "Player Settings" can be quicker than if both "Settings" were
still just listed in the top-level menu — i.e. it's now 3 clicks
compared with just 2 clicks in the "old approach".

(That said, accessing the Settings menus via "Information" is certainly
easier than having to multiply scroll to the bottom of the interface
Settings page to click on them.)

Very interested in trying this.

However, I followed the installation routine —

In the LMS web interface in Settings > Plugins, add
https://www.nexus0.net/pub/sw/lmsdboptim/repo.xml to the list of
Additional Repositories, activate the plugin and re-start LMS.

— but "DB Optimizer" didn't get installed.

So I tried activating the plugin (ie, ticking the box), saving settings
and restarting LMS three more times, but still no luck installing it —
it's just showing as an unticked box in its own "LMS DB Optimizer
plugin" section of the Plugins page.

I'm using

LMS Version: 8.1.1 - 1610364019
Operating system: Debian - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: armv7l-linux
Perl Version: 5.28.1 - arm-linux-gnueabihf-thread-multi-64int
Audio::Scan: 1.02
IO::Socket::SSL: 2.060
Database Version: DBD::SQLite 1.58 (sqlite 3.22.0)

Thanks for any help.

I really like MS, but (fwiw) I much preferred having the 3 settings
menus listed in the first dropdown.

I'm all for 'simplicity' in UI design, but a menu with just two entries
in it (Settings, Information) seems underpopulated/inefficient from a
usability angle, especially since I suspect people will access the
Server settings more often than the Interface or Player settings. (I do,
but I realise that I could be the exception rather than the rule.)

Perhaps there could be discreet links to the other settings pages at the
-top- of the Settings dialog, to eliminate all the scrolling?

Thank again for all your work on MS.

Please don't have MS ignore fixed volume completely.

The existing way it functions, whilst arguably 'illogical' (in that the
volume control still "works", at least for hardware interfaced by a
plugin), actually seems to be do exactly what everyone wants, so far as
I understand things.

Wouldn't this just overcomplicate matters? Is there really a case for
adding another "settings" option that doesn't fundamentally change what
already happens — i.e.

If the player volume is fixed, altering the setting only has an effect
if, as in gnackwatschn's set up, there's a plugin that recognizes volume
changes and which passes them on to some hardware. In all other cases,
altering the volume setting is just ignored.

Actually, it could be incorporated in the current player "Volume
Control" option with a change of wording to the existing options — eg,

- "Player output fixed at 100%, but control changes passed through"
(or whatever wording makes best sense to users)
- "Volume control adjusts player output directly"

And yet it's still happening for me. :-( Indeed, it happened just now,
which is what prompted me to check for a reply (for which, thanks).

Fwiw, it only seems to happen in Material Skin in a Chrome browser,
running on Win 8.1. (I also use the Material 'wrapper' on Android, but
I don't -think- it's ever happened on that.)

It had occurred to me that I might be accidentally clicking on the
Shuffle icon — but I never accidentally activate 'Repeat', 'Transfer
Queue', 'Add URL to Queue", etc, so I'm as sure as I can be that it's
happening without my doing anything, accidentally or otherwise.

Is there likely to be anything relevant in the log entries for Material
Skin? (I've set it to Debug, but thought I'd ask in case I'm wasting my
time looking.)

Thanks.

Everything's fine, functionally. And, fwiw, I think it makes more sense
for all the sign-in stuff to be on the settings page.

Just one comment — the text that says

I'm not actually a fan of "Sounds" — I was too used to iPlayer Radio,

But your plugin is worth it just for the search capability — thanks!

having artwork displayed against pretty much everything very
distracting, especially as many album covers are indecipherable as

In many circumstances it also means you can get more lines of content in

I'm worried that I've missed something obvious, but does Material Skin
have the same options as the Default skin to just show "text-only" in
the Browse panel and "Hide Artwork" in the Queue panel?

ie, to just display text and no artwork. everywhere that's possible. (I
don't mind it in the "Now Playing" banner at the bottom, but find
thumbnail album covers in the browse and queue panels distracting and
unnecessary.)

Thanks Robb.

I don't actually use Playlists (the path to "Playlists Folder" on my

accidentally zapped to anything.

And as I don't use "Custom Skip", it seems the "Zap" option won't appear

Ah, with you now.

Yes, that works fine in a catch-up program, where you're starting at the
beginning of a complete "file" of a program (eg, something in BBC
iPlayer Extras).

However, if you click the next track >| button in a live stream that
you've skipped back to the start of, it just goes to the "live" position
ie, "now" rather than skipping forward in 1 minute

Hmm... I'm also on a ASUS laptop (a UX305), which is about 3 or 4 years
old, so I must be doing something wrong.

Here's what I'm doing.

I go to the "More info" page for stream that I've skipped back to the

I click-and-hold on "Skip forwards 1 mins".

Nothing happens... until I release the click. Then it skips forward the
1 minute and goes back to LMS Home.

It behaves a bit differently in the default skin -- eg, it goes through
this sequence for "Skip forwards 1 mins", so you get to click on "Skip
forwards..." twice before you end up at a page without a link.

Also, in the Default interface you can do a "back" in your browser (I'm
doing all this on a laptop, not a smartphone or similar) and it will
take you straight back to the page(s) with Skip links , so you don't
have to go through the faff of opening the "More" menu, etc.

Unfortunately, press-and-hold doesn't work on a laptop's touchpad :-(

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Material Skin

2020-08-01 Thread SpiderJon

Firstly, I really like Material Skin :-)

Now, my "problem"...

I often listen to live streamed radio, but want to listen from the start
of the program. That's easy, because of the "Skip back to start of
program" option.

However, I often then want to skip around in the stream — eg, to skip
past news on the hour/half-hour, or go back and listen to something over
again.

That takes us to the "Skip Forward 1 mins" and "Skip Backward 5
mins"options on the "More info" page for the stream.

31175

They're fine if you just want to skip forwards or backwards that exact
amount of time.

The problem starts when you want to skip forwards or backwards more than
1 or 5 minutes, because when you click on either them of them, the "More
info" page closes, and you're back at the home page of LMS, so you've
got to open the three dots menu of the stream and click "More" again,
then click on the required "Skip..." option again. If you want to skip
forwards, say, 10 minutes, it's obviously a pain.

31176

So, my question is: could the "More info" page for a stream be made
"persistent", so that it doesn't close when you click on a Skip option.

And/or, could the Skip options be added to, say, the stream "More"
menu?

Thanks.

But the OP said "I'm listening here in France - on my PC, *without any

I'm guessing what he was listening to wasn't geolocked.

So, as well as http://bpa-code.github.io/bpaplugins/repo-playhls-v2.xml
do I also need to have

I've now been through the process* 4 times, but the PlayHLS V2 plugin
steadfastly refuses to be installed.

* ie,

- tick box next to "PlayHLS V2.x" entry in the "PlayHLS V2.* Plugin
  repo" section
- click "Apply"
- click "OK" in the "You are about to install: PlayHLS V2.x Only
install extensions from authors whom you trust." pop-up dialog
- restart LMS

After restarting LMS, PlayHLS v2 isn't listed under "Active plugins",
and there's still an entry for it under "PlayHLS V2.* Plugin repo".

My LMS details:

BBC iPlayer version is 1.6.7

Logitech Media Server Version: 7.9.2 - 1536935553
Running on FreeNAS/SlimNAS v2.0.2

I'd have been playing a mixture of live streams and 'listen again' (LA)
programmes.

I'd also restarted LMS two or three times, having updated BBCiPlayer and
experimented with different versions of menu.opml

The massive delay figure doesn't always appear. I just played "Yes
Minister: Series 1: The Devil You Know" again (having played various
live streams and LA programmes in between) and there was no "delay"
figure. The same went for various other programmes selected at random.

But then I played "Delve Special: Series 3: A Rocket for Defence"* and
got "25625728 mins delay".

I've just updated to 1.6.0.

Now, when I play 'listen again' radio programmes (ie, not live streams),
I get titles like

"*Yes Minister: Series 1: The Devil You Know - 25625564 mins delay*"

That's about 49.3 -years- :-)

Plus, since it's not a live stream, there isn't a delay anyway. (Live
streams show the "1 mins delay" I'd expect, as that's what I've set in
the options.)

It doesn't seem to cause any problems with playing the programme -- just
wondering what the explanation is.

Many thanks d6jg.

I'm liking the idea of a Raspberry Pi, as also suggested by mherger.

Yes, it's used as a general purpose NAS as well. I currently just use
SMB and DNLA.

The two functions (LMS and NAS) could be separated though.

Good point :-)

It's a 3.40GHz Pentium 4(HT) with 3GB of RAM. (No particular reason for
the choice other than it was spare box.)

At present it boots off a USB with FreeNAS on, so the HDD could just be
swapped to another set up.

I've stayed at FreeNAS 0.7.2 because (afaik) it's the last release of
FreeNAS on which I can run SlimNAS (as per info on your page at
http://www.herger.net/slim/detail.php@nr=1026)

Any pointers on my best option for a different (free) NAS, using the
same hardware, on which I can run LMS would be very much welcomed.

Thanks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Slimnas / Squeezebox / LMS problems

2011-11-20 Thread SpiderJon

Just an update, for closure.

After a great deal of diagnosis, it turned out to be a faulty RAM
module. So, not a FreeNAS problem, certainly not a Slimnas one, and
not (as it now turns out) a problem with upgrading to LMS.

I reformatted my HDD (to remove any trace of anything, just in case),
installed the latest stable FreeNAS I could find - 0.7.2 Sabanda
(revision 8191) - then installed Slimnas 2.0.2 and LMS 7.7.0.

Fingers crossed, everything is currently working.

And thanks again to Michael for Slimnas - it's a great piece of
software.

I eventually opted to reinstall FreeNAS

I started with 0.7.2 r5543 (for which I have a burned CD to hand,
dating from the Security Alert release) and then did a firmware update
straight to r8181.

But then, when I tried to copy my music files from back up to my new
FreeNAS share, it would be ok for a while and then fail - with various
errors from FreeNAS (eg, SOFT UPDATE INCONSISTENCY), and FreeNAS often
rebooting itself.

Anyway, to cut to the chase, I currently have FreeNAS problems, rather
than any SlimNAS ones, so need to get those sorted first.

Thanks to both Furry and Michael for their replies :-)

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Slimnas / Squeezebox / LMS problems

2011-11-14 Thread SpiderJon

I tried to update to SlimNAS 2.0.2 and LMS 7.7, but things appear to
have gone horribly wrong.

Even though SlimNAS 2.0.2 seemed to install fine, as did LMS 7.7 -
leastways, Logitech Media Server appeared in the FreeNAS 'Extensions'
menu - Squeezebox just wouldn't start up.

I then tried rolling back to earlier versions of Squeezebox Server and
SlimNAS, but I now can't get any combination to work.

Further, FreeNAS now itself seems problematic - Explorer tends to just
hang for long periods if I try to access the FreeNAS file structure -
and I'm wondering if the failed updates/roll-backs are causing this.

I've attached my Slimserver server log from when I tried to update to
2.0.2/7.7 and when I susquently tried to roll back to 2.0.1 and
Squeezebox Server 7.6.1, then 7.6.0 and finally 2.01/7.5.5 (which is
what I had when I tried to upgrade to 2.0.2/7.7).

FreeNAS version: 0.7.2 Sabanda (revision 8191)

Platform: i386-embedded on Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Jon

If it is intentional, there might be some bug in the replacement logic.

Changing it back certainly fixed the problem - thanks. But I'm not sure

I'd assumed that configuring it to replace the standard SBS menu of
Years with Composers would, well, do just that :-)

I never use the Years menu, and I wanted the Composers one, so
replacing the one with the other seemed logical.

I've obviously not understood what the SELECT REPLACEMENTS OF STANDARD

Thanks again.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Custom Browse question

2011-02-24 Thread SpiderJon

I've set up three Custom Browse menus, and configured them all to Show
in
browse and home menu.

They all appear in the 'My Music' menu on my Duet Controller - but only
two appear on the Web UI (which I tend to use a lot, controlling my
Squeezebox from my netbook).

As they're all configured the same (as far as I can tell) there's no
obviously reason why one doesn't appear on the Controller menu.

The one that doesn't appear is 'Composers', if that's of any
relevance.

Help, please :-)
