i had a recent issue with this; I fixed it by installing manually (from
James' site), restarted, then did a clear everything and rescan. so
far it's been solid.

i did notice that if you have any old protect itunes tracks (.m4p) that
this seems to trip the plugin up when it encounters them.

Hi all,
I had missed updating one of the plugin version numbers (I said it'd been a
while) and I think that was causing the plugin to think it was still out of
date.
I've updated the version on my website.

Nice to know people are still using it!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update plugin and LMS 7.7.1 problem

2013-06-25 Thread WhaleOil

Hi netchord

I am not sure why this is not working for you. It should work if you
install the plugin folder in either location. Is it possible you have
it installed in both places? Have you copied the complete folder and all
of its sub-folders? Is the iTunesUpdate folder showing up in either the
DownloadedPlugins or InstalledPlugins folders within your Library/Caches
folder?

There is a bug in the new version of the plugin (2.9.0) that is stopping
the normal repository download method (from the plugins tab) working
properly as the system keeps thinking it needs to update to a new
version and it ends up going around in circles. I think this is because
the install.xml file in the iTunesUpdate folder refers to version 2.8.3
instead of 2.9.0. The installed plugin should still work though. Might
be worth manually changing the version number in this file and see if
that helps.

Do you get a message that plugins need updating from the home page of
the web interface? This would explain why it no longer shows up in the
lists of available plugins. If you turn off the 'download updated
plugins automatically' option then you should see iTunesUpdate show at
the top of the page.

Sorry I do not have any definite answers, but hope this helps.

Just to report a problem I am having after installing from the usual
Plugin repository. The plugin installs OK and updates playcounts as

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update plugin and LMS 7.7.1 problem

2013-06-24 Thread WhaleOil

Hi netchord

Just a few (hopefully helpful) comments on your installation approach:

- Installing in the directory
/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/contents/server/Slim/Plugin/
as you suggest will work, but you will need to reinstall the plugin if
you update to a new version of the server software as this directory
will be overwritten by the installation of the new version. (As an
aside, because you are using Mountain Lion, it would be worthwhile
updating to the beta of 7.7.3 or 7.8 because this will stop your server
going to sleep while it is playing music/radio.)

- Better to use the ~user/Library/Application Support/Squeezebox/Plugins
as the install instructions suggest... The trick is that you do have a
Library folder in your User folder - it is just hidden by the operating
system (this was a new 'feature' introduced in Mac OS X 10.7 and later).
To reveal your ~user/Library folder, the easiest way is in Finder,
click on Go in the menu bar at the top of the screen and then hold down
the alt/option key. As if by magic, your Library folder will appear in
the menu, click on this and you can then navigate to the folder you
need. You will find all sorts of interesting stuff in the ~user/Library
folder, but best not to mess with it or your funny things can happen to
your system - maybe this is why Apple felt the need to hide it?

- If you install the plugin from the usual plugin tab it will appear in
~user/Library/Caches/Squeezebox/InstalledPlugins/Plugins (your other
third party installed plugins should be here already if you have
installed any). Manually installing the iTunesUpdate folder to this
folder should work as well. Not sure why installing from the plugin tab
said "failed to load" for you - may be that you restarted before it had
downloaded from the repository? (When the plugin is downloaded, but
before it has been installed by restarting the server it should appear
in ~user/Library/Caches/Squeezebox/DownloadedPlugins.)

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

That's great - many thanks James and cosmotic. It's working fine for me
on a Mac (Mountain Lion) and v7.8 of LMS with one oddity. It ignores any
track with an apostrophe in the path name (artist, album title or track
name). It doesn't crash, and continues to process and update subsequent
tracks as long as they are free from apostrophes.

Would you like a log excerpt to cover that?

here are the settings that work:

*Download iTunesUpdate from James' site
*set SC auto-restart to "off" (ie, do not auto-restart on boot or login
*Copy iTunesUpdate Folder to
/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/contents/server/Slim/Plugin/
*install iTunesUpdate from the plugins tab in the SC web interface
*restart server
*check direct update button in ItunesUpdate settings, click apply
*profit

one small bit of odd behavior: I have a Touch running as a controller,
and since installing the plugin, it no longer displays artwork in the
Now Playing screen. SC shows the correct artwork the web interface, as
does SqueezePad. on the Touch, navigating to Extras-->iTunesUpdate-->
produces a spinning wheel that never resolves.

small update; removed and reinstalled the plugin in the plugins
directory of the SC webinterface. unchecked direct update- the
instructions are counter-intuitive, but it appears to say that if you're
running on a non-windows OS (ie, OSX) to set direct update to "off"; not
clear if this means direct update is not supported.

now playing is now showing the currently playing track, but says "play

James- thanks very much for this.
the install instructions state:

-On the Mac the plugin needs to be installed in
~user/Library/Application Support/Squeeze Center/Plugins (if SC7 is
installed for just one user)
or
/Library/Application Support/Squeeze Center/Plugins (if installed for
all users)-

On my system, with a single user, running Mac OS 10.8.4, iTunes 11.0.3,
SC 7.7.2, there is no "Library" directory in the ~user folder, nor is
there a Squeeze Center directory in the Library folder at the system
level.

I created the latter, created a Plugins directory as well, and restarted
SC. I also added iTunesUpdate from the Plugins page in the SC Plugins
tab in the web interface, and upon restarting got a message that "the
plugin failed to load."

i then tried installing the iTunesUpdate folder in the directory where
all the other plugins appear to be located (see my prior post):

Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/contents/server/Slim/Plugin/

restarted SC, and voilá, the plugin loaded, and i was able to adjust
settings, and check the box for direct update. however, it does not
(appear) to work, as play counts in iTunes are not updated.

iTunesUpdate does appear as a menu item in the Extras menu of the SC web
interface, but nothing shows as playing. i tried uninstalling the
plugin in the web interface tab, but after unchaecking the plugin,
applying the change, and restarting. it's still there.

i have not yet removed the directory manually, but will try that in a
bit. sounds like it may be in the wrong place, or it's in the right
place, but perhaps there are lines of code that reference the directory
structure listed in the instructions?

After installing the iTunes Update script, replace the attached .pm

As I started this thread I should report that I still have not found a
way to make iTunes Update work with versions of LMS after 7.5.6. I have
now taken the decision to update LMS anyway and stop using iTunes
Update. I now use Trackstat/Custom Scan to export a text log file and
then use an AppleScript to update iTunes. Although this is less
convenient in some ways, it does have the advantage that iTunes does not
have to be running all the time on my server which seems to help things
run more smoothly. Play counts, ratings and last played dates can be
updated in this way, but track skipped information cannot as Trackstat
does not record these.

Credit for the original AppleScript should go to another poster on these
forums... I will post a link when I track it down again myself.

I'd also like to know - I think it's a useful little gadget.
Should it work on a NAS (i386) installation ? What's the name of the
file that iTunesUpdate creates, and where does it store it - for iTunes
to read ?
Thanks !

I would also be interested to hear whether iTunesUpdate works with
current versions of LMS/OS X/iTunes, please...

There aren't any alternatives that do the same thing, are there?

Sadly my 2005 PPC Mac mini is very ill and so I've had to replace it and
try to set up iTunesUpdate on a new mini running OS X 10.8.2. I now have
the same problem of it crashing LMS.

Initially I had problems with the Glue installation and have discovered
the instructions need updating for OS X 10.8. The first step needs
changing from:

1. Install 'Developer Tools' from your OSX DVD

to:

1. Install 'Xcode' from the Mac App Store
Run Xcode, go to Xcode>Preferences>Downloads and install 'Command Line
Tools'

Then the rest of the instructions apply and worked fine for me.

However running iTunesUpdate 2.8.3 results in the server software (I'm
running LMS 7.8.0 - 1348834198) crashing immediately after updating the
play count and before updating the date. I've upped the logging levels
but all I see is:

and then it all goes quiet because the server has crashed.

Does that move this elderly thread on any further?

Is there anything else I can do to provide useful information?

Or has everyone else given up and moved on from this plugin?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update plugin and LMS 7.7.1 problem

2012-02-14 Thread pwootton

I'm seeing the same problem here after some upgrades. I'm running LMS
7.7.1; OS X 10.7.3 and iTunes 10.5.3. Also iTunesUpdate is running in
direct mode.

It's something odd happening in the Mac::AppleScript::Glue module.
I've traced the crash to the $iTunesHandle->current_date calls in the
iTunesUpdate Plugin module. If they're commented out then the server
doesn't crash (but you don't get the played date updated). However a
simple test script works fine, so it's something trickier than just the
call. I also put a call to current_date immediately after the
$iTunesHandle is initialised in iTunesUpdate; and it crashes there, as
well, so it's not a handle corruption.

If I can figure how to create a new date object from scratch using the
Glue code I can probably patch this, but at the moment I can't see how
to do this :-(

-- Sample test script

Code:

  #!/usr/bin/perl
  #
  # Test applescript call to current_date in iTunes
  #
  use strict;
  use warnings;

  use Mac::AppleScript::Glue::Application;

  my $iTunes = new Mac::AppleScript::Glue::Application('iTunes')
  or die "Can't glue to iTunes: $!";

  my $track = $iTunes->current_track;
  print $track->artist,"\n";
  print $track->track_number, ': ', $track->name,"\n";
  print $track->album,"\n";

  my $cdate = $iTunes->current_date;   # crashes here in iTunesUpdate
  print $cdate->{_ref},"\n";
  $track->set(played_date => $cdate);

  my $date = $track->played_date;
  print $date->{_ref},"\n";

Hi,

Version 2.8.3 of iTunes Update is working fine for me on OS X 10.5.8
and with iTunes 7.7.1 (I don't use any of the newer iTunes features on
my PPC mini so haven't updated it for years).

I didn't need to make any changes to it when upgrading from 7.6.* to
LMS 7.7.* and so have left it alone.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update plugin and LMS 7.7.1 problem

2011-11-19 Thread WhaleOil

I have just updated to LMS 7.7.1 from 7.5.6.

All seems to be OK except that the iTunesUpdate plugin now completely
crashes the server whenever it is activated (i.e. at the end of each
track, or when trying to access info from interface). The crash is
definitely causes by this plugin as removing it makes everything work
OK (except iTunes doesn't get updated of course!)

This is on a mac running OS X 10.6.8

Is the iTunesUpdate plugin working under LMS 7.7 for others? Anyone
else having this problem?

Many thanks

[SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update Plugin: Should skip count work?

2009-12-26 Thread mariowing

Hello there!

My question is in the title of the post really... I wonder if skip
count should work when importing the history file from iTunes Update
plugin into iTunes 9?

I see on http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer/index.html that it says
this only works for iTunes 7, but some of the info on the page seems a
bit out of date so it would be very nice if someone could clarify if
this feature only works on iTunes 7, meaning it does not work on later
versions of iTunes.

Regards, Marius

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] ? iTunes Update plugin

2009-04-28 Thread starcat

James, thanks much!

I have a Qnap NAS running linux with SC7 on it. I have iTunes running
on a different Mac computer. The iTunes library xml file is located on
a share which is imported on the NAS so that SC can import ratings and
playlist from the iTunes xml file. Now, I would like to have the
otherway roud synchronisation where changes made on SC are propagated
to iTunes. Is it possible to extend your plugin so that it calls
AppleScript on the remote Mac running iTunes (even connected through
simple telnet and not necessary ssh). Would be a very nice feature and
I think that this would be interesting to other people as well,
especially in times where SC runs more and more on NAS hardware, i.e.
not on the same computer like iTunes.

What do you think?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] ? iTunes Update plugin

2009-04-28 Thread Craig, James (IDEAS)
Hi Starcat,
The plugin actually does the updating via iTunes' own interface (using COM on
Windows and Applescript on the Mac), so in fact iTunes must be running for it
to work!

[SlimDevices: Plugins] ? iTunes Update plugin

2009-04-28 Thread starcat

Anyone know how the SC to iTunes update work, i.e. the other way round
where the iTunes Library is updated with playcount, last played and
ratings from SC? I think that this plugin is called "iTunes Update" and
is written by James Craig, http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer

Does it just update the xml file and what happens if the xml file is
open and iTunes is already running?

Thanks much!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update plugin: nothing happensrunning iTunesUpdate.pl

iTunesUpdate.pl should log directly to the command line when running - are you
not getting any output?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunes Update plugin: nothing happens running iTunesUpdate.pl

2009-04-10 Thread jacob

Thanks for the SlimServer plugin: iTunes Update.
I have downloaded and installed version 2.7.0. I am running:
SqueezeCenter 7.3.2.

But I can’t get it working?

I have set 'Automatically run on system start' and disabled 'direct
update'. Instead I run iTunesUpdate.pl manually but nothing happens in
Itunes? I have changed a line in iTunesUpdate.pl. But as I do not know
how to script Perl it might be here I have made a mistake?

die "usage: iTunesUpdateWin.pl  [loop
seconds]\n" unless ($filename);
to
die "usage: iTunesUpdateWin.pl
“C:\Users\Jacob\Music\Playlist\itunes_hist.txt” 900\n" unless
($filename);

The file itunes_hist.txt is updated all right, but I can find any log
files from the run of iTunesUpdate.pl. So it is difficult to say what
went wrong.

Could someone be so kind to advise?
