Let's not hijack pippin's thread for this, instead I'd suggest that you post in the "Developers" section of the forum if you have more questions and someone will be able to help you. If you have done some programming, have some time and are willing to learn you have a good start. I think people, like myself, who is used to Java or other more modern object oriented languages are more frustrated with perl than people who don't know any modern object oriented language. It is a bit messy and before I know Squeezebox Server I thought perl was just another way of writing shell scripts and not a language anyone use for applications. Many sources on internet mainly show examples of perl usage in small shell scripts so this is something that's good to be aware of when you search for information. The syntax is more or less the same when it's used in applications, it's just packaged in *.pm files instead of *.pl files. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) (Install my plugins through Extension Downloader) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library, Title Switcher and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73237 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

However, the end result will be the same: 1. Current playlist is empty 2. Album1 is played to playlist -> Save state with playlist based on Album1 3. Album2 is played (playlist clear and album2 added to it) -> Save state with playlist based on Album2 I think there might be some cases, at least in Custom Browse, where playing a album actually issues a play command for each track on the album. In that case there will be 12 states to save (one for each track). This scenario was what I was trying to avoid by not saving a new state when a track is added. An added track would just update the previous state. A undo operation in this situation probably want to undo to the playlist before the album was played in one single step. Of course, there are probably other ways to accomplish this too. The reason Custom Browse issues a play command per track is that it can be a filtered menu that just shows some tracks of the albums, for example tracks rated with 4 stars. Anyway, it requires some work but it should be possible to implement for someone that has the time and interest to do it. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) (Install my plugins through Extension Downloader) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library, Title Switcher and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73237 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

You don't need to save the playlist to file, it's enough to store it in the database if that's faster. It should be pretty fast as long as you don't have gigantic playlists but gigantic playlists doesn't work good with SBS anyway, so... But some thoughts: 1. I find the accidental destroying of playlists interesting, actually, in this case it never occurred to me. I don't do a lot of playlists but I'm also pretty sure I never ever accidentally hit a cover. May be because I usually use my iPod two-handed and when I use it single-handed, it's with the left hand (making it almost impossible for me to hit the cover at all). But I also tend to believe it's probably a thing between knowing and not knowing what will happen. 2. This may sound harsh, but new users don't count for me. I've said this before on issues such as pop-up choices, the "swipe" subpages on NowPlaying, the "modes" and a lot of options: I AM willing to compromise immediate obviousness for long-term efficiency of the UI. My ultimate goal with the iPeng UI is that if you use it a lot over a long time it has to be the most efficient way to handle the task of operating a Squeezebox that I can come up with. People have a brain to learn and usually are pretty good at that and I _HATE_ UIs that unnerve me with dialogs and things that help new users to not have to understand how things work but keep being in your way over and over again when you use the thing. iPeng is NOT made for one-time use but for long-term frequent use. I find it interesting that Luke (the author of Squeemote) recently posted that he came to a similar conclusion WRT pop-ups, which Squeemote currently has and he's obviously removing for the next release because they were too unnerving over time. On the use case, the opinion looks split, if I look at the poll. May be a similar case as for the "Play Shuffled" option, which a lot of long-term Squeezebox owners simply don't seem to understand (since Squeezebox doesn't have it that way and Squeezebox didn't have "play other tracks in album" as a default in the past - it is now). That option works EXACTLY the same way as in Apple's own iPod App making it very simple and obvious for iPhone a dn iTouch users but obviously there is a significant number of iPeng users who simply do not use that. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73237 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins

Are you suggesting you save every playlist you make, and after every song you add to it? Can't say I'd like to do that. I tend to think that the "touch album art to play" issue might illustrate that (very broadly speaking) there are two types of users: those that usually build up playlist from (mainly) single tracks as they go and on the fly, and the others who more often play whole albums (and/or maybe existing pre-prepared playlists). I suspect it might be mainly the first type of user who finds "touch album art to play" inconvenient. I am interested to hear from others how their friends find their first play with iPeng. It was my experience with three friends at different times over Christmas that led me to bring up the "touch album art to play" issue. All of them attempted playlists (rather than playing whole albums) and managed to destroy their playlists accidentally pretty immediately. One gave up with the device and used the controller instead (although I'm not sure he found it much more friendly). The other two persevered but both managed to destroy a playlist at least once more during the evenings. A caveat might be that my friends are all over fourty and could have fatter fingers than younger souls. MC -- ModelCitizen Think the third party Squeeze plugins and applets are important? You get a full context menu when "hold"ing the item and simply selecting the item drills down but there's currently a shortcut for immediately playing the album when touching the cover. I originally had this in the skin, where loading of menus, details etc was much slower and did not include it in the first builds of the app but re-added it after a lot of beta testers requested it to be added again. Got more of these requests again later when it did not work on some screens, e.g. Search. It's "just" adding an option in this case but because the cover is handled differently in some places (the item displayed is not always an album, it may be a track or it's an icon for an online service) it's more than one change. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73237 ___ plugins mailing list plugins@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
