I like the ease of touch artwork, but with friends at the helm it can be
problematic. Is there anyway to have an undo function?

I thought about that (long time outstanding bug). The problem is: there
is no way to guarantee that this succeeds on the iPeng side.
Long playlists can take minutes to load, Squeezebox Server is EXTREMELY
slow in processing the current playlist. So what do I do when the
playlist isn't complete? Wait a few minutes?

So undo would have to reside on the server.
One way could be to autosave the current playlist to a file before
issuing a command but that, too, could take a few seconds, although I
believe Logitech experimented with this for the Touch UI. Maybe I
experiment with it, too :)

Sorry about the difficult suggestion, but as I see it the playlist
change is editing, and most end users editors have a sort of oops I
didn't mean to do that mode.

I think this would crack many of the party mode etc. comments. Great
you'll take a look.

I fully agree it should be there.
It's just that it should be implemented on the server side, should be
fairly simple to do there.

I think it should be possible to do on the server side as a plugin. You
don't need to save the playlist to file, it's enough to store it in the
database if that's faster.

It should be pretty fast as long as you don't have gigantic playlists
but gigantic playlists doesn't work good with SBS anyway, so...

If performance is a problem the plugin might even store the old
playlist in primary memory and don't save it to disk at all.

I wonder how much history it would need to have ?
Is it enough to undo one step ?

It's also possible to have different scenarios for different
operations:
- Should it be possible to undo a add operation ?
- Should it be possible to undo a delete single track operation or
just a operation that replaces the whole playlist ?

As long as you just keep it in RAM it should not be a big issue to do
10 or even 100 steps, shouldn't it? I mean, we talk about a number of
URLs here, not large data structures.

I'd say it should simply save the previous state for any operation
acting on the current playlist. That's really not a lot of data for
adding/removing single tracks, the full PL only has to be saved for
clear.

If implementing as a plugin I think you need to save the state after
someone has modified the playlist because I don't think there is any way
to hook in before a change. However, the end result will be the same:

1. Current playlist is empty

2. Album1 is played to playlist
- Save state with playlist based on Album1

3. Album2 is played (playlist clear and album2 added to it)
- Save state with playlist based on Album2

I think there might be some cases, at least in Custom Browse, where
playing a album actually issues a play command for each track on the
album. In that case there will be 12 states to save (one for each
track). This scenario was what I was trying to avoid by not saving a new
state when a track is added. An added track would just update the
previous state. A undo operation in this situation probably want to undo
to the playlist before the album was played in one single step. Of
course, there are probably other ways to accomplish this too.

The reason Custom Browse issues a play command per track is that it can
be a filtered menu that just shows some tracks of the albums, for
example tracks rated with 4 stars.

Anyway, it requires some work but it should be possible to implement
for someone that has the time and interest to do it.

From an iPeng perspective I would find it easier to save the state
BEFORE I issue a command (because that's when I know I will do that), so
if a plugin provides the feature iPeng could precede each command with a
save state command.
For incremental changes it could also provide some information about
what kind of command this is (add, play, clear,...)

Don't know about CustomBrowse, though, and this would also probably
fail on plugins like Dynamic Playlists or Random Play.

Erland / Pippin

I think this undo suggestion would really make a large amount of the
community very happy. It stops all the variety options issues, but
fundamentally allows all users to try and use the product as intended,
but with no playlist lost disasters. I hope something can be done.
Logitech would love this, it would save a whole load of grief that has
ben around for a long time - party mode etc.

If you want any help on testing / evaluation as I have recently ceased
working for a living, I can commit some time to test scenarios etc. as
required.

It feels like this should be handled completely on the server side and
just offer a undo JSON command which iPeng can use. That way the
functionality can be provided also for Controller and IR remote users.

However, if you want to have as little logic as possible on the server
side and only support iPeng, a solution with a separate save state
command will probably make the plugin part easier. Although, I'm pretty
sure Logitech won't implement a save state solution in Squeezeplay.

Sorry for being OT, but I do not have a clue where to start an
 assessment.

A good place to start is:
http://learn.perl.org/

Another tip is to start with some simple plugin and modify it for your
needs, for example the Remove Played Songs plugin which does some work
with playlists:
http://www.koldware.com/SlimStuff/RemovePlayedSongs-2.3.1.zip

You probably need more help after you have looked at this a bit. Let's
not hijack pippin's thread for this, instead I'd suggest that you post
in the Developers section of the forum if you have more questions and
someone will be able to help you.

If you have done some programming, have some time and are willing to
learn you have a good start. I think people, like myself, who is used to
Java or other more modern object oriented languages are more frustrated
with perl than people who don't know any modern object oriented
language. It is a bit messy and before I know Squeezebox Server I
thought perl was just another way of writing shell scripts and not a
language anyone use for applications. Many sources on internet mainly
show examples of perl usage in small shell scripts so this is something
that's good to be aware of when you search for information. The syntax
is more or less the same when it's used in applications, it's just
packaged in *.pm files instead of *.pl files.

I really like the current implementation. Clicking cover art to start

Are you suggesting you save every playlist you make, and after every
song you add to it? Can't say I'd like to do that.

I tend to think that the touch album art to play issue might
illustrate that (very broadly speaking) there are two types of users:
those that usually build up playlist from (mainly) single tracks as they
go and on the fly, and the others who more often play whole albums
(and/or maybe existing pre-prepared playlists).

I suspect it might be mainly the first type of user who finds touch
album art to play inconvenient.

I am interested to hear from others how their friends find their first
play with iPeng. It was my experience with three friends at different
times over Christmas that led me to bring up the touch album art to
play issue. All of them attempted playlists (rather than playing whole
albums) and managed to destroy their playlists accidentally pretty
immediately. One gave up with the device and used the controller instead
(although I'm not sure he found it much more friendly). The other two
persevered but both managed to destroy a playlist at least once more
during the evenings.

A caveat might be that my friends are all over fourty and could have
fatter fingers than younger souls.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng poll: Do you use Album art touch to play?

2010-01-03 Thread pippin

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73237

Question: What do you think about quot;touch-to-play-albumquot; for
cover art in iPeng?

- I use this and like it.
- I don't use this and it disturbs me
- I don't care

First - I'll add the option, so no panic.

But some thoughts:
1. I find the accidental destroying of playlists interesting, actually,
in this case it never occurred to me. I don't do a lot of playlists but
I'm also pretty sure I never ever accidentally hit a cover. May be
because I usually use my iPod two-handed and when I use it
single-handed, it's with the left hand (making it almost impossible for
me to hit the cover at all). But I also tend to believe it's probably a
thing between knowing and not knowing what will happen.

2. This may sound harsh, but new users don't count for me. I've said
this before on issues such as pop-up choices, the swipe subpages on
NowPlaying, the modes and a lot of options: I AM willing to compromise
immediate obviousness for long-term efficiency of the UI. My ultimate
goal with the iPeng UI is that if you use it a lot over a long time it
has to be the most efficient way to handle the task of operating a
Squeezebox that I can come up with. People have a brain to learn and
usually are pretty good at that and I _HATE_ UIs that unnerve me with
dialogs and things that help new users to not have to understand how
things work but keep being in your way over and over again when you use
the thing. iPeng is NOT made for one-time use but for long-term frequent
use.
I find it interesting that Luke (the author of Squeemote) recently
posted that he came to a similar conclusion WRT pop-ups, which Squeemote
currently has and he's obviously removing for the next release because
they were too unnerving over time.

On the use case, the opinion looks split, if I look at the poll. May be
a similar case as for the Play Shuffled option, which a lot of
long-term Squeezebox owners simply don't seem to understand (since
Squeezebox doesn't have it that way and Squeezebox didn't have play
other tracks in album as a default in the past - it is now). That
option works EXACTLY the same way as in Apple's own iPod App making it
very simple and obvious for iPhone a dn iTouch users but obviously there
is a significant number of iPeng users who simply do not use that.

I agree that iPeng should be geared toward long-term efficient use and I
find it does that very well.

But I just checked the native Music app on my iPod Touch -- it does NOT
play an album when you touch the album art -- it just shows the track
list for the album. Thus the behavior of iPeng differs from the native
Music app in this respect.

The point is that the native Music app does not destroy an existing
playlist when you touch the album art -- if a goal of iPeng is to be
consistent with the native Music app, then the touch album art to play
album and destroy playlist feature should be deleted, or at least made
an option and not the default.

The iPod app doesn't have a current playlist it could destroy or it
would do that all the time. It only has a very nasty and inconvenient
way to build an on-the-go playlist which you can then play.

It's not a goal of iPeng to be consistent with the native iPod App, i
just borrowed the idea of the Play Shuffled item from it which should
be familiar for iPhone users but obviously isn't.

After you've destroyed a playlist once through Touch Album you know
what happens, as you can see on the poll a lot of people use it. As I
stated before: I'll add the option, default probably stays as it is now
(or I start another poll :) )

I use the touch cover art function all the time and would miss it if it
was to be removed.

For those unintentionally trashing playlists with the function an
option to turn it off would help. I personally would instead like it if
you, pippin, could address this feature request you yourself made quite
some time ago: https://trac.penguinlovesmusic.de/trac/ipengnat/ticket/55
(Add Undo for anything that clears the playlist) An option to restore
the last playlist would help, I think.

Thanks for bringing this up, Pippin.

I've frequently had my playlists destroyed, which can be pretty
frustrating. Most of the time, though, it's *not* the touch cover to
play that does it. Instead, it's when I'm selecting individual tracks
and I don't hold my finger down long enough to bring up the contextual
menu. The most frustrating thing is that I almost never want the
immediately change track behavior.

In my ideal world, there'd be a setting that made add to playlist
*always* be the default option. In other words, you'd need to use the
contextual menu to get iPeng to immediately play the track (and destroy
the playlist). This would happen at the track level and also at the
touch cover to play level.

I like the touch and play feature, but maybe you could bring back the

They caused too much confusion (and never acted on the cover, btw).
It's just a single additional click now with the context menu
(hold-select vs. hold in the previous release).

:sigh:
Why does it kill you?
Three cases:
1. You touch the cover art: Shuffle mode stays as it is.
2. (same as iPhone's native iPod app): Touch play shuffled plays the
album suffled
3. (same as iPhone's native iPod app): Touch first track to play album
straight away. This will even turn shuffle OFF!

What is so difficult about this that people actually want a feature
REMOVED that they could just as well simply ignore?

It is a very handy feature. Please keep it. As long as people are

Moose has similar functionality in its cover chooser screen. I
requested a change there, which was implemented such that clicking
popped up the choice to:

Play Now
Play Next
Add To End
Play Track  {select from a list of tracks}
Add Track to End  {select from a list of tracks}
Play Track Next  {select from a list of tracks}
Add To Favourites
Create MusicIP playlist

I've not got an iPhone, so I haven't tried iPeng, and don't know how
this sort of approach would fit, but a simple additional selection of
either Play/Add/Cancel would perhaps work.

In iPeng there is always a row for an album and an associated cover art
to the left. You get a full context menu when holding the item and
simply selecting the item drills down but there's currently a shortcut
for immediately playing the album when touching the cover.
I originally had this in the skin, where loading of menus, details etc
was much slower and did not include it in the first builds of the app
but re-added it after a lot of beta testers requested it to be added
again. Got more of these requests again later when it did not work on
some screens, e.g. Search.

It's just adding an option in this case but because the cover is
handled differently in some places (the item displayed is not always an
album, it may be a track or it's an icon for an online service) it's
more than one change.

I do use the touch album art to play the album feature. But I have also
accidentally wiped out playlists with it, which is very frustrating.
I would like either the option to turn it off, or an option to toggle

Question: What do you think about quot;touch-to-play-albumquot; for
cover art in iPeng?

- I use this and like it.
- I don't use this and it disturbs me
- I don't care

I use it, but I also frequently touch album art by mistake whilst
building a playlist. The resulting destruction of my playlist is so
irritating and the time it takes to rebuild it so costly that I'd forgo
the touch album art to play album functionality.

However, I guess an option to turn the touch to play on/off might be
the friendliest compromise.

Think the third party Squeeze plugins and applets are important?

I never knew about it, and thankfully, never discovered it by accident.
I'd be annoyed if it blew my playlist away. Although the longer I use
use Squeezeboxes, the better I am getting about not getting too attached
to an unsaved playlist. :-/

Not necessarily hard, it's just that this is in a lot of places.

Is that different than changing it? I obviously know little about the
programming part, and will continue to think this is one of the best
justifications for an iPod Touch no matter what happens...just figured
I'd ask...
