Steve Kirsch sayeth: If we're talking SoCal punk, I always liked the Minutemen about 1000 times better than Social D. (and if you listen very carefully you can hear the sound of Purcell's head exploding right about now...:)), Actually, what you hear is me mailing sympathy cards off to Amy and Steve for their stunning gap in their otherwise usually good taste. Between Heaven and Hell and the self-titled record with the Ring of Fire cover (I think it's a cover, but I don't know whose song it is, any help? g) are two of my fave roots rock records of all time. Well, don't send too much sympathy my way...I **like** both of those albums a fair amount. I just think Social D. suffers from a major "sameness" problem a lot of the time. I swear 80% of their songs are interchangeable (maybe closer to 100% on the latest studio album from a few years back). And it doesn't help that Ness' vocal delivery is identical on every one too. I saw 'em on both of those tours, though and they really do kick ass live, but the albums are only a once-in-a-while-and-then-I'm-tired-of-'em-again thing for me. MIKE NESS
I was checking out the new releases on Twangfest sponsors Miles of Music's and Village Record's websites (while drinking a Miller Lite, listening to Hayden's Ferry's releases on KDHX's webcast via Telelink, and reading No Depression! ). I see that Mike Ness has a new cd out called Cheating at Solitaire. MOM describes it as Hard edge roots rock from a southern California Punk Rock Icon. I'm intrigued. Billy Zoom, Brian Setzer, and members of Cisco guest on it. So, have we discussed this already in P2 land. Perhaps I missed it. Has anyone heard it? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks, marie
Re: MIKE NESS
Haven't heard this yet myself, but last night on MTV120 Nessie did a song called "Don't Think Twice It's Alright". This is a cover-ain't it? If anyone can fill me as to who it's by that'd be great. dan, pretty sure he's exposing once again a huge amount of ignorance.

answering my own post, I write; Haven't heard this yet myself, but last night on MTV120 Nessie did a song called "Don't Think Twice It's Alright". This is a cover-ain't it? Yeah, it sure is, you idiot. Dylan, off of "Freewheelin'". Hey, Ralph didn't know who he was eitherG just ignore me, dan bentele
Re: MIKE NESS
Steve says: One other comment on it--I'm not sure Mike's vaguely Richard Butler-esque snarl really works in a rootsier context. It gets tiring a little sooner when he's out of the slam/bang Social D setting. I've always been afraid to confess this amid the Social D lovers around here, but I've never been able to listen to the band because I just can't stand his voice. It gets tiring for me with Social D in about .002 seconds, so I probably couldn't even take the shrink wrap off the solo CD without getting annoyed. If we're talking SoCal punk, I always liked the Minutemen about 1000 times better than Social D. (and if you listen very carefully you can hear the sound of Purcell's head exploding right about now...:)), Amen to that. (Er, the Minutemen thing, that is, not my little bro's head exploding.) --Amy

So did anyone see Mike Ness w/ the Rev's band at SxSW? And is there any update on this long-talked-about solo record? Dave *** Dave Purcell, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Northern Ky Roots Music: http://w3.one.net/~newport Twangfest: http://www.twangfest.com

If this thing is really gonna be an acoustic folkish-country record I'll be there the day it's released. A little more insight on Mr. Ness's upcoming solo thing. He's got Chris Lawrence (ex-Neon Angels) whose currently doing axe-man duty as part of Cisco's Reasons Why band playing guitar on it which tells me there's going to be some serious twang going on. And speaking of Mr. Lawrence, he and his pal Cisco were damn impressive at the NEA in Nashville this weekend. Definitely have that Dwight Yoakam thing going, but with a harder edge to it all. Unfortunately, they were somewhat of a last minute addition and not many folks in the Gibson Guitar Cafe to see them on Friday night. Another impressive twanger was Mark Insley who also hails from the Southern Calif. neck of the woods. He had a pretty fine record out a year or so ago on Country Music Town Records. Reminds of sort of a cross between Lauderdale and Ricky Nelson. Also didn't hurt a bit that he had Tim Carroll guesting on guitar. Called Rosie on stage during his Wolfy's gig and they did a duet on "Sin City" that'd make you melt. Boudin Dan
Mike Ness (Re: SxSW)
Sheesh, isn't everyone?? g. I'll still put their "Making Believe" up against any rock cover of a country song And then Jon wrote something like "good thing that g is in there" (which *was* funny). That said tho, Nessie does have the ability, at least lyrically, to write many great country songs; "I Was Wrong" off of that last record they did (I think it was the last) was as powerful as any post-punk song I've ever heard, one of those songs that slices right into the core of the listener with a "man, that's a little too close to home" feeling-at least it did for me. I'd love to heard a country-oriented act cover that. He's a little too limited in the sound and type of songs he writes w/ Social Distortion, but I wouldn't put anything past the guy. If this thing is really gonna be an acoustic folkish-country record I'll be there the day it's released. Dan, still laughing at the Brooks/Padres clips.
