DISK Images; What are they?

2001-10-03 Thread tbrock

Regarding system install disks, what are disk images? Also, why stop at
8.1 for powerbooks as "recent" as the 3400's? It seems like some
p-bookers are running operating systems into the nines.

Thanks for your replies! Thomas & The Kinders

I use an Asante FreindlyNet card. Around $60 USD new.
Write [EMAIL PROTECTED] and ask them what card they recommend for the

Asante's support is top notch. Very responsive.

Reset power manager

Here are various instructions for resetting power manager gleaned from
the list.

Good luck

Cliff,

I occasionally get the two symptoms you have and here is the
__voo-doo__ that
I go thru to clear the "no awakening/no start" on the 5300. I do not
understand why this works and that is why I'm calling it voo-doo. This
is
from empirical observations and testing.

Symptom 1

-Unplug the AC and the battery.
-No need for a wait. Plug in the AC _only_ you should either hear a
small
noise and or the sleep led should come on constant with no flashing.
-If in 60 seconds the start process does not begin, press the Reset
button
briefly.
-If in 60 seconds the start process does not begin, press the Power
button
briefly.

At this point I ususally have a 5300 that has started the boot process.
***Ususally it is very slow like a human awakening from a stupor, and
gathering its wits. I _assume_ it is rebuilding a directory and/or the
desktop, or maybe loading something from the PRAM.

I usually then run diagnostics to clear the original problem, but I
have
noticed that if it is interrupted in sleep or shut down, this problem
will
occur, or if the power was removed suddenly while it was running or all
power
was removed including the PRAM battery.

Symptom 2

This one I partially understand.

Whenever I get a message that says "The Finder has unexpectedly quit."
I have
found that a restart or shutdown and start will not clear and reset the
Finder, and the Finder stays unstable.I have observed that at this
point the
AM Option prefs are bloated (larger that the normal 4k) and the AM does
not
work correctly.

A friend told me the following and it works for me.

-Get to the point that you can open the Preference folder.
-Put the following prefs in the trash:
Apple Menu Options Prefs, ASLM Preferences & Finder Preferences.
-Restart.
-Empty trash after the restart.

Neither of us know what the ASLM does, only that it needs to be
included in
this process or it does not work. If anyone can tell me what ASLM does,
please do.

I think the reason for my occasional Finder quits is a conflict with MS
Word
and/or AOHell, and maybe CopyPaste.

I have made a script using (Apple)Script Editor to reset the Finder and
leave
it on the Desktop so that it is easily reached when I have a "Finder
quit".
Sometimes you can not navigate far at that point, and this way I only
need to
do one restart.

Re the PM:
1. Plug in AC
2. Remove battery
3. Hold in reset button on back 45-60 secs.

Boot up, replace battery.

Reset the power manager. You should actually plug the AC _in_, pull the
battery and then hold the reset button in for 45 seconds - 1 minute.
Sometimes you have to do this a couple of times. Actually, from wide
experience, I've found (inexplicably) that the PB190s have pretty
flakey
power managers (I'm talking about 10 different ones I've worked on),
whereas the 5300s PMs were pretty solid. Similarly, I've lost the PM a
couple of times in 6 months on the Wallstreet, but never on the
Lombard.
Hm...

Thank you, thank you. I realized a while back that this problem was
so common, it couldnt be a flaw in every model. I guessed that the
knob was the tune for the laser head, and it seems to be a correct
guess.

Out of 3 drives I have had that posesed this problem , I got all

You have to tweak in small motions.

The easiest way is to put the powerbook on a table, and you sit on
the floor, looking up at the powerbook. Take the metal cover off, and
then put the drive back in. Sit so that when the tray is ejected,
you can look up, and be able to tune the knob without having to tak
the whole CD ROM out. This way, you can also listen to the drive
when you have a CD in. The sounds will tell you if its going to work
or not.

Also, if you put a disk in, the the drive light flashes 14 times
its out of tune.

Which LaserWriter driver for 7.0?

The 2.5" SCSI drives, such as those used in the PB500 series, have an

No, I'm not talking about the dreaded "stiction" problem, which plagued the
early 3.5" drives. This is more like an interface interlock, not a mechanical
problem.

One cure is to always have a floppy with a minimal system on it ... just the
system file and the finder should be adequate.

Whenever this symptom appears, try booting from the floppy. This will nearly
100 percent of the time unstick the SCSI interface and thereafter allow the
PB500 to boot from it's hard drive.

Note that you really needn't have the "right" system for your PB on this
floppy. All that is required is that the disk has been initialized and it has
some kind of system, even one that will give you a "This system is not
designed for this Macintosh" message.

I had one that I retired many years ago. I packed it back up in the original
box with all the original packing, software, manuals and inserts. In late
1999 I was cruising eBay and saw how much they were going for. Typically
$100-150 at the time. None in boxes.

I figured I would dig mine out of the attic, blow the dust off and see what
I could sell it for.

The winning bid...$475! I was a bit stunned too.

I got emails from Japan and Hong Kong begging me to consider shipping it
there (auction stated USA only). The new owner was thrilled with it...but
probably not as thrilled as I was to get $475 out of it, especially since I
had paid less than half that years before.

BTW, it's a charcoal grey (same as the PowerBook 100 series of the day) and
2 speed. You could connect it to your stereo and play CDs, or to your TV and
play Kodak Photo CDs. All via a very cool remote control. Oh yeah, you could
also connect it to your Mac via SCSI. It had one 50 pin connector on the
removable base but you couldn't operate it at all if it was removed from the
base...kinda dumb.

Oddly, it was a dud when Apple brought it out. Perhaps it was priced too
high.

I have a PowerBook Duo2300 (actually a 280c with 2300 mobo and IDE drive)
which I recently installed OS9.1 on. It has only 44MB RAM and is 100MHz with
no L2 cache. I was surprised at how well it ran on this pokey machine! It
only uses 14.7MB RAM and seems to run a bit better than OS8.6, BUT, I
haven't had much chance to run it through the paces with some real world
applications either.

Since it's just something to play with right now (I use a Wallstreet
regularly) I'm not that concerned about speed with it. However since it's
doing better than I thought it would, I'm planning to install OS9.1 on my
5300cs and see how it does.

Good idea. I worked from the PDF version when I did a motherboard swap.

I recall mentioning on some list that one should not forget the powerboard
as it is separate from the motherboard and not used on a 190.

I installed the Focus combination video/ethernet card during my upgrade. I
now have 16 bit external video and a 10T ethernet connection (combined into
one kinda heavy dongle). It has a standard 15pin Mac video connector and a
RJ45 ethernet port.

One of the list member (David Wegener) has them for sale and rather
reasonably priced, NIB.

> c) you will need a torx 8 screwdriver (and possibly torx 6)

Didn't need the torx 6. I don't think there are any...I take that back, the
floppy drive module does have some torx 6 screws. I had to take mine apart
and make some adjustments to it as it wouldn't eject floppies (seems to be a
common problem for this module).

I managed to locate a 2GIG with the original mounting hole placements. I had
a 6gig drive I had hoped to use but saw that the screw heads would have
stuck up causing the problem you mention.

A hookidoohicky? A dental probe is one option. However I just straightened
out a paper clip and bent about an eighth of an inch of the tip over with a
pair of needle nose pliers. It works great and it's one tool that's easy to
replace if you lose it ;^)

Uh ohhh....

2001-10-03 Thread Bruce Johnson

I just went to check my 540c (closed and 'asleep' since last night, only
to find it hadn't gone to sleep.

It crashed, and when it restarted it made some horrible disk-grinding
noises and I got the dread 'X disk' icon...

I fear my drive has gone to the great dead disk dump in the sky...:-(

I'm going to let it cool, maybe take it out of the case and whack it
gently, but I know that sound, it's a HDD death rattle...if I can get it
alive, I'm dumping as much as I can off to another mac while it lives...

Does anyone know where I might find a larger scsi notebook drive (I know
they're rarer than hens teeth!) This was one of the coveted 512 mb
ones...I'd really like one of those...

The IDE conversions at MCE are not an option, they're cost much more
than the computer is worth...

The laserwriter extension should be in the installer disks for OS 7.0
which is available through Apple:

http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_7.0.x/

That will let you use a LaserWriter which does postscript.

There are utilities to load a Postscript file to a laser printer; I
remember one used to be on BBEdi's site, and there may be an apple
utility browse through the FTP site lited above to find it...

Which LaserWriter driver for 7.0?

2001-10-03 Thread josh hough

I would like to connect an ancient Mac running System 7.0 with an Apple
Personal LaserWriter NT. The Apple Knowledgebase says to use a LocalTalk
connector, which I have. As for the driver, I need whatever version is
compatible with System 7.0. I searched the Apple site and all I could find
was the Laser Prep file, version 7.1.2, but it also says the Laser Prep file
became obsolete with System 7.0 (i.e. all I need is the appropriate
LaserWriter driver alone). Could anybody help me understand this better, or
send me a copy of that driver? Also, can I do PostScript? Thanks very
much.

add.

IIRC, to reset the PowerManager on the PB 5300, remove the main battery and
the ac adapter. Press and hold the reset button for 30-60 seconds. The reset
button in by the i/o ports on the back.

You will have to reset the Date & Time as this also resets the PRAM. If you
wish to save the total hours run, use TechTools to save a copy of the PRAM
before and then add it back after. A very low total hours _may_ indicate a
dead pram battery. It could just indicate a reset PRAM with out a save.

If the 5300 has been sitting around for much more that a month, it is very
likely that the PRAM battery has discharged completely. They are
rechargeable, but they do die. IF, after you have left the 5300 plugged in
over night, but that you find that removing the main battery and ac adapter
for 10 minutes causes the date to be lost, then the PRAM battery is dead.

You must also change the AppleTalk CP _everytime_ you insert the GV PC card
and want to use it. The AT CP will otherwise revert to default. I leave a
alias of the AT CP on the desktop for easy access and as a reminder.

I have the GV 56k card and it generates too much heat to be left in all the
time,YMMV, so I insert the card only as needed. With Macs you only need the
file sharing enabled on the "from" Mac, and the cables can be connected hot.
With PCs I have no clue.

I have moved over to a Pismo, but the 5300 still has a favored spot in my
heart. It was the laptop that I cut my teeth on after coming back to
computing. I have even gone so far as to connect to the web by cell phone.

There are plenty of 5300 users on this list, with lots of good experience, so
enjoy your 5300!

Hi, I found that 9.1 took up a quite a bit of the RAM, and IMHO that for the
few feature that it offered over 8.6 was not worth it. I had a 5300ce/ 64Mb/
Office 98 for Mac, on a small Mac-only LAN. I could not perceive any gains
with Speed Doubler, but other swear by it.

Since you are maxed on RAM, you might look into using CompactFlash for more
memory. Especially since their prices have fallen, atleast here in the US. I
have no experience with them but others on this list, IIRC, have.

I don't know...the memory consumption isn't much different between 8.6 and 9.1
anyway, so I'd just leave 9.1 on there. As far as networking capability,
there's little difference between 9 and 8.6, so that's a wash, I think.

DAVE runs perfectly fine under 9.1 (you may have to get the very latest
update, though) I have version 2.5.1 installed on my home desktop (running
9.1) and it works fine.

Office 98 should run fine.

With only 64 megs of RAM, VPC will run _really_ slowly. I'd avoid it like the
plague.

As for Citrix, I've no clue...didn't even know Citrix _had_ a Mac client...

As for NT logins it'll work fine, with either DAVE or NT's own SFM. I use my
540c in this role all the time. It's slow, but that's because it's a 540c ;-)

>c) Since I would be running at least system 8.6, is Speed Doubler 8 helpful
>since there is PPC code in this system?

No. Speed Doubler is just a source of hassles and crashes, imo. All it really
did was to speed up file transfer in the Finder, and that's much improved in
Sys 9.

jaws. Dunno what the official tool is, though. Those 'stats, however are an
invaluable part of my workbench kit, one of the more useful repair tools I
own.

powerbook 5300 quuestions

2001-10-03 Thread K

[EMAIL PROTECTED] answered some powerbook 5300 Questions, and I'd like to
add to these suggestions:

>>1. Is the Powerbook supposed to start up when the power adaptor is
>>plugged into it? Mine does.
>It should not. Even if it is only asleep, it should not start up when the
>ac adapter is plugged in. You
>should have to press the space bar or another key to awasken it.

* However, mine also SOMETIMES starts up when plugged in. It happens after
the powerbook has been unplugged for some time. You will need to reset the
power manager (someone will post the instructions here) and then keep the
powerbook plugged in overnight to recharge the pram battery (which may be
dead) and the larger battery.

>> 2. One of the batteries (Apple) has been reconditioned with instructions
>>I read on the list archives,
>> and works well now, but the extra one (Panasonic) does not appear to
>>ever charge, even when left in >> overnight. When I try battery
>>recondition with it, the 5300 goes black, and I have to restart.

>background. When the
> battery is completely discharged you may have a poorly redrawn desktop
>until you restart, but do not > unplug the ac adapter until the battery
>is fully recharged.

* You need to consider that this Panasonic battery is dead. Also, again
consider that the pram battery may be dead. People will post symptoms here
to help you check these.

>> 3. Does anyone know of a place to download simple directions on how to
>>use the GV PowerPort
>> modem/ethernet card that came with this machine?
>Start at Read thru the descriptions of the s/w

> one or do not complete the flash upgrade. Since the card was not made by
>the current owner of the
> GV name, you will be SOL. The flash is easy, just make sure you have a
>good power source.

* Firstly, you can flash upgrade this card, and the information is on the
global village site. However, for instructions on how to USE the Powerport
card itself, you will first need to check that you have both the PCMCIA
card and the rectangular black connector cable (dongle/clyde) that came
with it. It has one connector for the phone and one for ethernet (check the
symbols on the dongle). To get the card to work you will need to have the
GV software installed; first version 3.02 for the full install (this should
also be on the GV site) and then the 3.06 update.
When these are installed, then insert the GV card and its icon will appear
on the computer's desktop. Double clicking that icon will give you some
help and some options.
To use the modem, you need to plug in a phone line cable into the phone
line and into the phone symbol on the dongle. The installer will have
placed the modem script in your system folder, and you need to select the
correct GV script in your modem control panel.
To use the ethernet function, you must have an ethernet /crossover cable.
You plug this into the ethernet symbol on the dongle and into the hub, or
the other computer. Then you need to enable file sharing through the
control panel and chooser on both machines, or through the network.

>>I would love to ethernet to my iMac, but am not sure how the card works.
>>Can it be put in the slot while the machine is running?
>Yes, do you have the dongle or cable. it should have a RJ-11 (phone) and a
>RJ-45 (ethernet).

I'd put the PCMCIA card into the slot before you start up the 5300, and
have the ethernet cable in place and connected to both machines before you
start them.

>>Can the card stay in the slot all the time without hurting the Powerbook?
>I would advise against it as it creates too much heat. You'll know it when
>it happens the KB and trackpad > go wonkie. Do use the legs to raise up
>the back on a hard surface.
>IIRC it is suggested tht the GV card be used in the lower slot if posssible.

*I do keep my PCMCIA card in the slot all of the time, because either I
wish to connect to the internet and need the modem, or I wish to connect to
the network. I have even had two cards in the slots, but there is heat
generated, so use the card and see how hot your setup becomes. Then you can
decide when to remove it.

>>How can I tell which way is right side up on the connector that goes into
>>the card?
>For lack of a better way to describe it, the pretty graphics up and the 50
>(?) pin female connector in.

There is human figure on the top side and there should be two arrows
pointing to the right. This slightly smaller end slides into the computer's
PCMCIA slot. Push it in firmly.

>> 4. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good place to buy an
>>extra battery?

system 9.1 on 5300?

2001-10-03 Thread K

I bought a 4 G hard drive and the former owner left on it a clean install
of system 9.1, which booted fine on the 5300. I had it installed in a
powerbook 5300ce (active matrix screen, 117mz, 64 mb ram). The 5300ce
needs to log into a NT server, a Citrix metaframe, run Office 98, DAVE
and/or an old version of Virtual PC (however slowly)

a) My question is, should I leave on 9.1 for the networking capability, or
is it far too demanding of the 5300?
b) Or, is system 8.6 better for these requirements? (I do not want to run a
system older than this)
c) Since I would be running at least system 8.6, is Speed Doubler 8 helpful
since there is PPC code in this system?
Thanks for advice.

observations on 190 upgrade to 5300

2001-10-03 Thread K

Having gained much information from this list about the items necessary for
a powerbook upgrade, I would like to offer the following observations after
watching it done:
a) if you are going to try this upgrade yourself, be sure you have the 186
page manual with illustrations
b) be sure that you not only buy the motherboard, but also the powerboard
(which the 190 does not have) and if you are upgrading to the 5300ce, then
buy that video board as well
c) you will need a torx 8 screwdriver (and possibly torx 6)
d) if you buy a larger hard drive, such as a 4 G, and re-drill the metal
cage holes to fit the screws which are now located in a different place, it
is likely that one front screw will hit the plastic palm rest and have to
be removed

Could someone please tell me what tool people use (and its name) that
functions like a hook to lift up the plastic holding the keyboard cable and
the screen cable so that the cables can be lifted out?

Alladin problems and Cd Player...

2001-10-03 Thread Mike Hebel

I'm having problems expanding the SoundApp68k.sit file on my 540c
under 7.6 - is there something I need to know about using Stuffit
Expander Deluxe 4? It expands the BinHex just fine but seems to do
_nothing_ when running the .sit file! No matter how I do it it starts
up then goes away.

Also does anyone have access to the Sound Manager app that will work
on this PowerBook? I've heard that this will give me the control
necessary to play CD's at least via the Line-in/Mic-in. The only
reference I can find for it on Apple's site is in reference to
AppleVision which I don't have access to and I doubt would work on my
old 540c anyway.

Any ideas?

Drag the links to the desktop or a folder and they will download just fine.
If you're using Explorer, you might need to do a "save as..." instead, by
holding the mouse button down on the link and then choose from the pop up
menu.

1400 CD fix!

2001-10-03 Thread Christopher Morgenstierne

Thanks a lot to NN whose name I dont remember but who has three cats and
whose 'Frankenbook' 1400 has an interesting page!!!:

http://members.home.net/gionpeters/PB1400

The pages describes a fix for the TEAC 1400 CD drives, found by daringly
trying his way. I have some CDs that my drive (8x) has accepted well, some
that it has never accepted and then some that would only work after
inserting several times. The latter have been the most anoying figthing
with, on the other hand, the given-up ones are a serious problem. There
have even been music CDs that the drive has given up playing, for instance
my new Led Zeppelin collection. Serious!

I have now done NN's fix, and the drive works like a dream. Again, thanks!

However, I think the text on the webpage could be modified - whereas the
pictures are exelent.
- I don't think it is necessary to take of the metal cover and plastic
buttom from the drive's box (step one), or remove the connector at the back
(I never did that)
- Simply take the drive out and open it. Turn it upside-down and remove the
small metal cover: no screws, use a minimum flat screwdriver to flip it up
at the four places it is bent round to lock on to the drive
(I mistakenly took off two screws in the rail on the one side and the
palsitc door with the result that the two parts of the rail were in the
wrong position with eachother when I assebled the drive and it could not
close).

(3/4 of a turn counter-clockwise was also the right for me)

All the best,

Christopher

yep, I've had similar results from two batteries that i've tried to
recondition for my 170. I was quite surprised by the spike at 5 mins
or so, but I decided it must be a feature of the chemistry of these
batteries when they're on the way out. (unless it's the rate of
discharge, but this is on Battery Amnesia, which I think gives a
constant rate of discharge). I gave up and pulled the cells from one.
They all held an initial charge, and I haven't had a chance to check
them out past there. But yes, my guess is that your battery is
probably u/s.

I'm sorry to say I don't like your chances with the external charger,
either. I have one of these and it didn't really help the two weak
batteries, not for want of trying. My guess is that Battery Amnesia
achieves a better discharge in any case.

I'm currently working on putting together a pack that will go through
the old battery shell to the regular battery terminals (so that the
machine reads it as a battery rather than ac adapter from the dc
input at the back). I'm wanting to do this without soldering the
cells, so I can put them to other uses and increase my recharging
options. Once again, I haven't had a lot of time to put into this,
but it seems that the connections between the cells and from the
external battery to the PB terminals need to allow for a high drain
(and you need to be very careful not to short the terminals).

One funny thing: using one of the bad batteries I've described, I've
been able to get an external battery pack wired through in parallel
to extend it's life to about an hour but after I removed the dodgy
cells from the original battery, I couldn't get enough power out of
the external pack alone to stop the PB from going down.. My guess is
that the wiring on the external pack isn't heavy enough to provide
the necessary current, but it will trickle in to augment the old
cells.

Any thoughts and experiences with other variants to the old NICd
battery rollercoaster? I noticed someone recently remarked about
replacing NiCd cells with NiMH. I've been working on the assumption
that the 170 charger won't do a good job with NiMH cells, and would
be likely to undercharge or cook them. Does anybody have any
experience with this?

best wishes, and can I add to other peoples' comments, that although
I'm only a (very) occasional contributor here, I really enjoy the
spirit and tone of the discussion.
