what OS are you using? it has evolved, maybe you'll need 8.1 to do
that ? System info should be the place to see that ? maybe the PB is
an exception?

Missing Desktop Folder

2003-03-26 Thread Jim Lucas
This is going to sound weird. I have lost the desktop folder on my PB
1400cs in the root direcory! It used to be there. I could see it from
a different computer when networked (I even had an alias of it on the
networked computers so I could slid files right to the desktop.) I
could see it with RedEdit and Drop*Blindfold. I could see it when I
single clicked and held on the hard drive icon while using FinderPop.
But I did something, I don't know what, and it is gone. Utilities
that can see invisible files no longer can see it. What gives?
Suggestions? It was handy to be able to copy stuff over the network
right to the desktop, and even into folders on the desktop!

Yep. My 1400 has been very happy with its Best Data 56K modem and its
EtherLink III 3c589C card, as long as I make sure not to sneak one in on it
until after it's booted up (or after it's shut down).

Only if it's the first very first time or you remove it and shut it down. In
either of those cases it's expecting an empty slot at startup.

Confirmed. It needs to complete the entire boot process before you attempt
to insert the card.

If Jim is trying to push it back in during the boot process, it will
probably cause a problem.

However, if he pushes it in _after_ a completed boot and there is some kind
of failure, then we have another problem.

So, if it's something you use daily, it should probably just be left in.

I have been booting up my 1400c (stock 133mHz 601e, OS 8.6) with a Global
Village fax/modem/ethernet card which always remains in the slot, almost
every day for 2 years with no problems (never kicks it out). In addition,
for the past 6 months I've been booting it with a formatted 128mb CF card in

I just thought I'd stick my oar in, and mention that Apple, in their
blinkered wisdom, didn't sell the 2400 here in Australia. They do
occasionally come up on eBay (grey imports?) but at inflated prices.

There is no power switch. The most likely cause of no LEDs is the power
cord working loose (inside the little door on one corner); if that's not
it I have no idea.

I don't think there is any reset; you can pull the plug. After any jam or
other yellow light condition, you typically have to open and close the
toner cover and it resets itself. Jams tend to occur in the back; often I
have to hold the pass-thru switch in the up position with a rubber band.

You have every reason to be skeptical about anything I say! Thanks for the photo
of the screen, because it clears up a few things. It definitely rules out any
problem with, say, the connectors (which can be unreliable, as Sionnach notes, and
cause many display anomalies -- but not this one).

>From your photo, it is almost certainly some problem with either the backlight not
getting its light evenly distributed to all parts of the display (was this thing
ever dropped?), or a thermal problem that causes the liquid crystals to stop
polarizing correctly.

If the thermal problem is caused by the CCFL tube, things should improve if you
turn the brightness off, and let it sit for a few hours. If the display is ok when
you turn the brightness back up, then it's likely a tube related thing.

If not, open up the display, and try aiming a desk fan at the affected areas, and
see if that helps at all. And examine the display carefully to see if anything has
gotten knocked out of alignment. Inside the LCD panel assembly, there is a
translucent sheet whose job is to disperse the backlight evenly (it may be
hard/impossible to see anything other than the edges of the sheet; look around
near the CCFL). If it's loose for some reason (or curling up at its edges as it
heats up), that might cause what you're seeing. Overall, I think the cause itself
is pretty simple (light not getting to the right part of the display, or parts of
the display overheating), but finding out what it is another story...

The most reliable way to get the right CCFL lamp is to measure its dimensions, and
use that as a guide. If you get lucky, a knowledgeable sales associate at JKL or
DigiKey (see http://www.lowendmac.com/bookrev/02/1227.html) might already have a
cross-reference with the right part number handy. Me, I'm never that lucky.

I'm looking forward to the next episode in this continuing saga...

Tom

Re: powerbook 1400 stacked memory sizes?

2003-03-26 Thread David Allen
You list six slots on a 1400? What OS are you using? I also only show the
Logic Board RAM and the Expansion RAM with OS 9.1. (16 and 48 respectively for
the 64 Meg Max.) The only way I've found to check RAM module sizes is by
removing and checking the numbers, or removing one of the stacked modules and
seeing what difference there is between the original and the new amounts.

My PCI Macs show all of the slots, (8 in my 7600/8600s) but my 1400s show only
the 2 slots. (Profiler adds the soldered on motherboard 8 megs of memory to the
Apple memory card for the "Logicboard" memory and the single slot into which you
can put a single or a pair of stacked 3rd party modules for the "Expansion"
memory.)

Olin,

Bummer, dude. I fear you've been hosed by the infamous M5140 ac
adapter. Examine the plug tip and see if the insulation has broken
away. Then go to this '95 TidBITS issue and, well, decide what to do.
Others on this list have alleged you can replace the faulty fuse if
you're not too squeamish about soldering, but the ac adapter is gonna
have to go, alas...

I also fear that the two "new" batteries you bought were toast when
you got them. Perhaps someone will recommend where to get them rebuilt
with new cells.

Warmest regards,

Gary

if that is true for the 500 series Powerbook, it actually couldn't be a

especially the corners first. But maybe I'm wrong and it is the backlight -

mine shows 56 built-in,
when i click the arrow,
it shows

but there are two stacked ram modules inside, so the 40 = two modules of
unknown capacity and profiler doesn't show what size the individual modules

Powerbook 170 battery won't charge

2003-03-26 Thread Olin Jenkins
Greetings, Powerbooks users:

Gentle help, please, since this is my first PB. I bought a PB170 from
a Swaplister in January, and it was an absolute gem in its first two
months of use. Software-wise, it's fine. I'm sure the OS (7.0.1*) and
all related stuff is a moot point.

Problem: just after two months' use, the BTI MC-170 battery (which
would hold a charge of about two hours: I never discharged it fully;
that could be a hint as to what I'm doing) stopped charging. I took
for granted that the battery was simply dying and bought two used
ones from someone else on the Swaplist. Neither would charge. So... I
bought a new BTI MC-170 and charged it with the PB170's supplied
power adapter (Model M5140) for ten hours and am now charging the
battery with a M5652 adapter.

Where I am right now: I can boot the PB170 with the original BTI
MC-170 battery that worked and charged with the PB; however, I can't
get the other three batteries to charge or boot the PB. Another hint
is this: I've tried to re-set the Power Manager with no luck (battery
out; power adapter out; putting paper clips on both switches).

I suspect a mobo problem, although the PB apparently has a strong
PRAM battery, as it's kept its settings. What's confusing me is that
I can't re-set the Power Manager, and I have the feeling that's where
I need to start to charge batteries. If I need to break into the PB
(I'm wary of doing it, even though I've broken into every Mac I've
owned), I would be grateful for any contacts with a "take-apart" PDF
URL.

Any immediate ideas? I'd begrudgingly used a Tandy 100 since 1992,
and until I can get my PB170 to work "mobile" again, the Tandy's back
in use. TIA, and peace...

powerbook 1400 stacked memory sizes?

2003-03-26 Thread NHJ News

Hi all,
In my pb 1400, the apple profiler says it has 56mb with 16mb on the
logicboard and 40mb expansion. What I'm wondering, is there an easy way to
determine what size the two stacked (=40) rams are? I figure it could be a
32 and an 8, or a 24 and a 16, but I don't know how to tell without pulling
them out.
thanks,
Wayne

AFAIK, there is only one ccfl tube in any of these screens, at the top or
bottom but not the sides.

Also, in my experience, the screen's corners darken whether the BL is on
or off. I've not noticed the screen becoming hot with the BL off, but
it's possible I suppose.

Sadly, that's what we are all seeing to various degrees. It does grow in
the corners first, then spreads out along the sides. I had set up a
maxed-out 2300 with a 280 screen, hoping to have the perfect travel 'Book
but 'twas not to be. : -(

I've got a 'new' 250, I haven't run it yet for a long period so maybe now
is the time to see if it afflicted. I'll report back if I learn anything
new.

The reason it seemed out of place is that the 2400c is neither a Duo, or
a 68k PowerBook for that matter. Furthermore it is in an entirely
different price bracket. I could say a 12" G4 is superior to all of
them, but that really doesn't help him in anyway.

I assumed that since both of the PowerBooks he asked about were 040
powered, that he probably is looking for a 040 powered PowerBook - most
likely because they are very very inexpensive.

A 2400c is lovely, but probably fetches quite a bit more than any 500
series or Duo 280.

AW: Powerbook backlight dicussion

Sionnach,

Thanks to your response and some qutoes on what you wrote:

Well. The word "blocks" confuses me a bit (maybe it's only my bad English
skill). I would describe it more as blurred/smeary areas growing from the
borders and getting more and more dark.

The longer the Powerbook is running, the bigger these areas get. And they
also get darker. Maybe the first 2 hours I can still recognize images (i.e.
the apple or the mouse pointer) under these spots. But after a longer time
it gets really dark. Then I nearly can't recognize anything under it
anymore.

I already wanted to do that. But I didn't get very far right up to now,
because I have no idea on how to disassemble the PB 540 to take a look at
all those parts. And I don't want to destroy anything. Is there any tutorial
on disassemling a 500 series Powerbook? I only found a tutorial on replacing
the RAM. But this isn't too difficult...

Thanks,
Kai

Re: Powerbook backlight dicussion

2003-03-26 Thread Sionnach Aisling

Sorry, I saw Kai's original post and then haven't been
following this thread, but I thought I remembered Kai
describing his screen getting dark around the edges
and I didn't take this to mean "getting dark" as in
loss of back lighting... I took it to mean "getting
dark" as in large opaque dark blocks appear on the
edges of the screen/grow into the display field.

Kai, whats going on?? Is it just the backlight? If
so, I would think you could still make out 'something'
of the display on the dark areas if you looked hard
enough. -Or, are you seeing dark blocks devoid of any
image appearing on your screen?

If it's the dark blocks, I'm doubting the backlight
would do much for you, as most of the time, when I've
seen that, it's been in the display itself rather than
the FL/Inverter or physical backlight bulb.

Again, I haven't been following the thread, so some of
this info may have already been discussed, but if it
were me, diagnosing any type of display problem, I'd
start by removing the LCD case plastic and top cover
and checking the cables where they connect to the
LCD/FL Inverter/and MB... I'd pay specific attention
to the way the cable routes through the hinge and make
sure it isn't badly kinked or freyed in any way...

Cheers,
Sionnach

1400c Formatting

2003-03-26 Thread Jeffrey J . Wrobel
Jordan,
I just finished the same exact thing on my 1400c. Start up with the OS
cd (System 9 is what I used), holding the Apple, option, shift, and
delete keys to force start up from the cd. Choose CLEAN INSTALL from
the OPTIONS button window. This will install a clean system and keep
your old stuff intact in Previous System Folder. You may just be able
to go to the drive before you start up and delete the Multiple Users
control panel or open it from there and reset it. Experiment, because
you can always take the more disrupting step, but you can't undo a
complete initialization. Try the least destructive step first, then go
on until you succeed. Good luck!

Powerbook backlight dicussion

2003-03-26 Thread Kai Steinmann
Again thanks a lot for all that posts about the LCD darkening.

Mad Dog: Do you really want to try replacing the backlight in your Duo 280?
If so, I'm very excited about what will happen...

But I'm a bit sceptical about the backlight theory. But only a bit because I
am far too dumb concerning that LCD stuff to be a respectable discussional
partner. ;-) However. What I have recognized is that the darkening does not
only grow from the left and right borders. It also comes from the top border
(more slowly. but it does). Which is kind of interesting because I don't
think that there is also a backlight on the top of the screen. But ok. Maybe
it is also influenced by the heat of the side backlights... I told you. I'm
quite stupid concerning that stuff.

But I've put a Picture of my screen online. So you can see what I mean.
Unfortunately I have shot this picture too early. So there is only a bit of
the top darkening. But it really gets worse when running the PB540 for some
hours longer.

http://www.webkreativ.de/temp/pb540_lcd.jpg

I think the question that still remains is: Is it the too hot backlight
causing the darkening or the exhausted LCD? And has anyone yet tried to ask
Apple what the problem might be?

Well. A last question: Tom - You wrote that i.e. DigiKey has these
backlights. I took a look at their page but there was only a lot of
confusion for me. Because I have no idea which one might be the right one.
Do you know which backlight I would need for the Powerbook 540? Or does
anyone else? Because if I could organize some. Why shouldn't I give it a
try...

Thanks,
Kai

Sounds like you have one of the later Personal LWs.

Maybe a 300 (non-postscript QuickDraw):

or a 320 (postscript):

You might even have that sweet little LaserWriter 4/600 (600dpi):

None of which have a power switch, rather they go into a low power energy
saving mode (sleep basically). To reset you have to just unplug it or use a
LaserWriter utility and reset it from there, but it's never really fully
turned off.

As for what the problem is, I'm afraid I don't have any ideas I can offer.

I think what happens is this: As the backlight ages, its resistance goes
up. Most backlight power supplies are designed to maintain roughly constant
current through the tube, and this helps prevent the light output from
dropping dramatically right away. However, the voltage dropped across the
tube does goes up, so the power dissipated by the backlight also goes up,
making it run hotter. LCD gook is very temperature sensitive, and will go
dark when hot. That explains why only the edge(s) go dark -- they're
closest to the actual tubes, and also explains why waiting some time lets
it work for awhile. I suspect that blowing cool air over the right parts of
the display would allow the PB to run longer before the dark edges appeared.

Of course, I haven't actually tested this theory to any real degree. But as
a proud member of the "often wrong, but never in doubt" club, I don't let
that stop me. :-)

in the eudora folder there is a file called eudora setting - i think
i moved that one to the trash, but it was a while ago, and NO it
doesnt help to just rewrite codes and adresses in the settingspanel,
you need a restart and a freshfile to be created.
it did strike me that with eudora you should stick with the version
matching your system, that bugfixesversion for a g3 will be a bug in
