Re: quickcam and powerbooks
I use a color Quickcam with my 1400 for video conferencing often. Works as well under 9.1 as it did under 8.1 and uses the same software. ( I'm using version 2.0.2, but I also use the Akua Nine11 extension version 1.3, which may or may not be helping this app work correctly under 9.1 ) The Quickcams are older technology, but their portability makes them a great little device. The video doesn't compare to the camcorder that I use with my main workstation, but try to fit a camcorder in a pouch in a PB carry case. David Allen Brian wrote: Does anyone know if the old serial Quickcams (color or grey) would work on a powerbook with 9.1? With a serial port of course. The Logitech site doesn't have any FAQ entries, but the old Connectix 2.1.2 drivers on are their ftp site, and the one mac support page mentions 9.0; but that entry may predate 9.1- or it may be right, and the software works up to 9.0. Anyone know? I'd like to throw a quickcam in the bag for my 1400/9.1, if it would work. Is there a reason to run 9.1 over 9.0 on G3 1400's? Re: 3400-190 compatibility
I will try to swap the keyboards. Do I need a service manual for the 190? You just need to undo the three screws on the bottom of the 'book and then gently lift the Keyboard up and towards you away from the screen - it has three sticking out bits at the top end of the keyboard by the screen. The delicate-ish connector for the kb joins the keyboard at the bottom left near the trackpad. Don't move the board too far from the screen with these connected! These join the motherboard at two connectors near the top left. You have to release the clips on these to remove the keyboard wire as you can damage it. Be careful doing this as you could break the screen connector etc. You could maybe take out the RAM card to get better access to this. Its easy to remove if you are gentle with it. Re: linux on a powerbook ?
put some form of linux or unix onto this machine. From what i have read the only version of linux that has any chance of compatability is mklinux which doesn't support pcmcia on the powerbook. NetBSD isn't compatable either although maybe other unix version are ??? From my reading, the only Mac linuxes that are recent, are linuxppc and YellowDog. About once a eyar for the last few years I think about doing linux and explore the mac distros, although I've not put any on ever ;) Linuxppc wasn't very complete and is now defunct, Yellowdog last I looked was pretty robust, although I'm not sure if the 1400 is supported or not, this flavor is AFAIK going to be your only hope for recent/robust/current/ongoing support. 1400 Power Button
Hello all. New to list. Just got a 1400/166 that is great except for one problem. When it first arrived, pushing the on/off button resulted only in a slow tick from the speaker. Pushing the reset button started it right up. A couple more tries and the slow tick has been replaced with silence and a reset is still needed. The computer will not respond to any keys including on/off to wake from sleep but reset wakes it up. When the comp is running, pressing the on/off which should bring up the Shutdown dialog, does nothing. The comp runs perfect in all other ways. I thought it might be just the physical key but the original tick rules that out. I suspected the Pram battery, but there are no other symptoms I know of. Maybe there doesn't need to be. Plugged into AC or Battery same results. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks, Michael St. Pete FL -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I agree - the Classic OS has a lot of staying power (witness the newest G4 machine). Apple clearly hasn't thought this through. So no go for the original poster, who was 1400 (even if he got a G3 card, the 1400 is not PCI based). And YellowDog lists 1400 2300 and 5300 as powerbooks which simply will not work. So it seems it is back to mklinux or one of the very limited distros, I'm afraid. I didn't check the other distros besides YellowDog, gentoo, and Mandrake but you can see them yourself from www.linux-iso.org then sort by architecture. Finding supported CPU info is surprisingly difficult, I'm now tempted to grab the distro 10 or 20 times from the distros who hide this info from me. It should be on their main page IMO. Hi Listers I am new to this list but not to LEM. I am looking a obtaining a low cost laptop. A G3 looks to be out of my range (price wise) but a 1400 or 3400 look interesting. I would prefer to use a 3400 with its greater ram and screen size but the CPU is not upgradable. The 1400 looks a good upgradable unit but is limited by the size of screen and max 64 ram. Has any one experience of being able to install more than the maximum listed 64 Mb of ram. I think I could live with the smaller screen size but would like to have more ram. If there is any more advice you could pass on to me it would be very helpful. John Abraham, Tavistock, Devon. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: linux on a powerbook ?
Thanks, Brian. I would also mention that for those users who cannot avoid using a 'newer' browser than those currently supported by Classic OS, Linux might be or actually is your sole alternative. Re: linux on a powerbook ?
1) See the FAQ at http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/350.html for hints on partial support of the 1400 by MkLinux. 2) See http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net/ for info on efforts to port linuxppc to the NuBus architecture, including the 1400. 3) If I remember correctly, ethernet support was spotty at best: you pretty mch had to have one of the built-in cards, as PMCIA/PC cards were not supported. Unless you're experienced with linux at a fairly deep level, you might be better off selling the 1400 and buying a cheap Lombard G3 or a 3400 instead. 4)Tenon Intersystems developed a very cool implementation of BSD as a MacOS application called Power MachTen. Essentially, the complete unix system runs as a MacOS app, and it supports the usual assortment of open source software (e.g. Apache, Perl), X Windows, etc. I used to run it all the time on my 44 MB PB 1400 under MacOS 8.6, and the performance was pretty decent. Re: linux on a powerbook ?
Linuxppc wasn't very complete and is now defunct, Yellowdog last I looked was pretty robust, although I'm not sure if the 1400 is supported or not, this flavor is AFAIK going to be your only hope for recent/robust/current/ongoing support. Fwiw, I tried out LinuxPPC several years back on my StarMax 3000, and it did quite well. Windowing was a bit slow -- sorta like OS X is on my iBook now -- but a very nice system to use. I didn't have any trouble getting any app I wanted running on the distro, and even played CivCTP on LinuxPPC before it was available for Mac OS! But for the 1400 (been checking it out this week just for the geek quotient), it does seem mkLinux is the only option. Though the 1400 apparently didn't enjoy official support for quite a while, it's partially supported (and boy howdy do I mean partially) now. Here's some info: http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/593.html NetBSD does not support the 1400, though it does support several low end Macs: http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/macppc/models.html Very low end Powerbooks might try OpenBSD: http://www.openbsd.org/mac68k.html#hardware With this in mind, I think you'd be better off trading in the 1400 for a support 68k-based Mac if you're dying for an open OS. Personally there's very little for the desktop I can do with an open OS that I can't do much better and more quickly with Mac OS 9-. Server-side is much better with open OSs, of course, but then you're probably not trying to get Apache/php/mySQL on a 1400. Strangely, the 1400's predicament in Linuxland is awfully similar to my Powerbook 150's -- both have siblings just above and below that work with some *NIX flavor, but these two models don't quite. Re: linux on a powerbook ?
It's a little hard to find, but http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ppc.php3 says G3 or G4 or a PCI based 604 only. So no go for the original poster, who was 1400 (even if he got a G3 card, the 1400 is not PCI based). That's not exactly correct. With some extra effort, most Linuces for PowerPC will run on a NuBus (61/71/8100, 5300, 1400, 6200, 5200, etc) Mac. You have to fiddle with the kernel - there is a NuBus enabled kernel out there somewhere that will enable the use of most other PowerPC Linuces on your 1400. My advice: Don't bother. Linux on the 1400 will be next to useless, since it doesn't support the T-REX PC Card controller, floppy drive, or expansion (CD-ROM) bay. It also doesn't have sound-out, so you can't even have fun playing MP3s from your hard drive. MkLinux also does not have support for these things. MkLinux is coming back into the fold as a more-up-to-date *nix. Last I heard, there were a few folks working hard on putting out a new release. Yellow Dog is fine, and there's a bunch of other *nixes out there. Besides MkLinux, none of them natively support the 1400, but if you track down the NuBus enabled kernel, you _can_ install any PPC Linux (not LinuxPPC) on your 1400. I've got Yellow Dog on a PowerTower Pro, and it works OK. I put Mandrake on my Wallstreet and PowerMac G3 with some moderate success. In both cases, it was more of an experiment than something I actually use. Setting up Macs older than the iMac/iBook with Linux can be a real pain in the butt Probably more trouble than the casual user would want to bother with. If you are a glutton for punishment, I put together a short how-to on installing MkLinux on my 5300ce. It may be adaptable for your 1400. Take a look at http://homepage.mac.com/alk/personal/projects/5300/mklinux5300.html That's a very temporary URL, and it's not linked to anywhere on my site... You could try taking it all apart and putting it back together. That solved one of my problems a while back. But unfortunately it doesn't actually teach you what was wrong. Making sure not to loose or strip any screws. :) :) On Tue, Jul 08, 2003 at 03:28:16PM -0400 or thereabouts, Davis wrote: Yes. Have done that. Re: 3400 or 1400
So would you say that Web page loading and screen redraw are good, not tolerable, with the 333 G3? I would. I've been *very* happy with mine, and it's all the PowerBook I need for the time being. Performance is very snappy, even in 9.1, and even with VM on (just about necessary with 9.1 on the 1400). -- -- personal: http://www.armory.com/~spectre/ -- Cameron Kaiser, Floodgap Systems Ltd * So.
