Anyone have a favorite old workhorse model to recommend Billy look

just because of form factor- you can pile books and stuff on a

Just make sure it's got the mac (round) printer port and you should be
set. You can make the printer do a self-test even when not hooked to
a computer.

Re: wireless with a dialup connection?

2003-09-02 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Has anyone used a wireless setup with a dialup connection on a 1400? Is it
even worth thinking about? I've got a dialup connection with a nominal
speed of 56k, but it always connects at 31.3k or less.
There are several coffee shops in town that have wireless access setups, so
I suppose that I could surf online while sipping latte and eating scones if
I decide to play around with wireless.

I'm confused... Do you want wireless, dialup,
wireless-while-dialed-up, wireless-to-dialup, or wireless dialup? ;-)

If the first, check the archives.

Dialup would be something to check for in the archives as well.

I've shared a dail-up connection with my wireless LAN, and that works
ok if a little slow.

There are also some base stations (Apple AirPort Base Station and an
ORiNOCO RG1000(?) included) that have built-in modems and will
connect to the 'net that way

Wireless dialup, OTOH, implies the use of a cell phone. I know many
people that use it, but they have similarly crappy speeds

Is it just me that's confused?

Re: formatting for DOS machine

2003-09-02 Thread Brian
I just talked to a friend of mine and he said he really likes the
laserwriter, i have never heard of this model. have any of you?

Depending on where you are in school, they could be much older than you are :)

About the size of 4 toasters and 25lbs is a Personal Laserwriter NT or NTR;
then they had a couple other biggish models, next there are some cute
little 1.5- or 2-toaster Personal Laserwriters, the 300? or 600? or so is
very well liked (I forget the model exactly, but I've set up a couple for
people as shared group printers and they are nice. Any of the old Apple
lasers would likely be a good find. Parts are available from
www.fixyourownprinter.com for things like fuser, rollers, etc but cost a
little ($20 to $50 depending). Yah, any of the Personal Laserwriters would
be fine. If they have a toner cart in them you just hold down a button to
get a test print; some problems are fixable yourself cheaply. Look at
www.info.apple.com, then product specifications for older products, then
pick the older laserwriters to get an idea of models that were made.

Sure, laser will ALWAYS kick tail over inkjet for basic black/white text
output, the toner cart is $40 or $50 perhaps but you get 3000 or more pages
out of it; an inkjet cart (b/w) is still about $30 and you get maybe 500,
usually less 'cos they dry up or get bubbles or whatever and you have to
flush the head a lot. But lasers are harder to find on the cheap. The $1
or $5 Deskwriters, you just buy a couple for $10 if you are lucky and use
it until it breaks.

now for some reason it will not format any disk, and now i lost my
document that i need for class tomorrow, sadly i don't have a really
old version of word for windows, i only have office 2000.

hmm... try formatting the disk on the PC. Then use the PC Exchange or
whatever on the Mac to just read it.

It does not have to matter about office 2000 or whatever. You can just
save your Mac Word document as text, and then open it on the PC and do
whatever you need. My experience with converting is that I usually need to
go thru and fix stuff anyway; might as well just save as text, and put
everything in on the Windows side (bold, italics or whatever)- you're
likely to have to fiddle with the thing anyway to get it to print properly.
I gave up on the converter things ages ago, I always end up using
formatting (super- or sub- script, or whatver) that just won't convert
nicely. ASCII (plain text) always works as I expect.

Luck,

Brian

Hi Josh,

The only PowerBooks that can be upgraded to a G3 via CPU upgrade are
the 1400 series and the 2400c. The 3400c can be upgraded to a G3
with a motherboard swap.

The best bang for your buck will probably the a 1400/G3. Earlier
clamshell iBooks are getting fairly inexpensive, though maybe still a
bit much for a first job type buy. A good way to get a feel for
fair prices on used Macs is to see what other people have paid for
them. Check out eBay's search function for completed auctions...

Good luck with the job!

The original Airport base station and one version of the newer kind
does handle dial up. Asante's older non-wireless router had an
option of using a dialup as a backup. And it would work as the only
connection, i.e. no broadband connection. If their current wireless
router supports a modem it should do what you want.

Faint Horizontal Lines - PB1400c Screen Problem

2003-09-02 Thread Christopher Kolp
It's a great time to chime in with my own 1400 screen problem!

After changing the hard drive out in it I've now got light lines that go
horizontally across the screen when a dialog box is open. If all is hidden,
and the desktop is in full view, there are no lines.

They're hard to describe, maybe a faint light white line that matches the
positioning of the horizontal lines on/in the dialog boxes (top and bottom
edge, any straight horizontal edge inside, etc). It appears that they only
show up when a horizontal line does, no text or anything else.

My 1400cs (no longer have it) used to do this but that was normal for the
dual scan screen. This, however, is not.

If anyone knows what could be wrong and possibly give me some advice, I'd
certainly appreciate it.

I checked to see if I pinched something when taking the drive out but
there's really nothing to pinch. Also, I've reinstalled 9.1 to no avail
thinking maybe some weird software error.

Thanks everyone,

Chris

Re: your mail

2003-09-02 Thread Howard R. Katz
In my experience M$ Word doesn't really need a format change--just save
your document to a DOS formatted disk. The IBM-style machine you then
open it on will be able to read the document directly. At the college I
work at part-time, we use this trick all the time--people don't realize
that a Mac is smarter than the IBMs since it can read HFS, MS-DOS and (on
our older Macs) ProDOS, while the IBM's are more stupid since they can
only read their own format. :)

OS 9.1 on a PB 1400?

2003-09-02 Thread Spencer Carter
For the past two years, my 1400 has been happily running OS 8.1 with a Sonnet G3
upgrade.

Now I'm thinking about going to OS 9.1, which is required by a new application I'm
thinking about getting.

Would appreciate advice on whether to install 9.1 on a second partition and leave 8.1
as is. I'm concerned that some of my older applications may not like 9.1, but on the
other hand, I've heard it's not good to have two operating systems on the same Mac.

Any do's or don't regarding installing 9.1?

Thanks,
Spence

Re: OS 9.1 on a PB 1400?

2003-09-02 Thread Glenn Schunemann
IMHO, partitioning with a bunch of different OSes is a pain in the
butt. This is what I would do:

- Boot to the OS 9.1 CD. Perform a clean install of the OS.
- Your OS 8.1 system will be deactivated and renamed to Previous
System. Don't delete it!
- Set everything up and use it with OS 9.1 for a while.
- If OS 9.1 breaks (which it won't), boot back to the CD. Trash the OS
9.1 system folder and rename the Previous System Folder back to System
Folder. You may need to take the finder out of the folder and drop it
back in to re-bless it. This will restore your system back to 8.1.
- You may need to update some apps to work with 9.1.

Course you won't need to do any of this, cause 9.1 won't give you any
problems.

Fire up Netscape mail and go to Tools Import. You import your email
that way. For your address book, you open the Address book window and go

For your bookmarks, fire up the browser and, yup, Tools Import.

In each case you'll be asked to navigate to the files if Netscape cannot
find them automatically.

VCDs on 3400

I don¹t know how to make them though.

I also wouldn't know how to play them in the 3400.

What software do I need for each machine?

The 3400 is running 8.6 and the G4 is running whatever the latest version of
OSX 10.2.6 or whatever the latest version is.

Can I create VCD backups of my DVDs? Can I make VCDs from any QuickTime
movie file?

This sounds like a fun adventure. If anyone knows what I need to do tell

Fake L2 cache in a Nupowr 167mhz processor/PB 540?

2003-09-02 Thread COCCORP
Hi,

In my recently obtained Powerbook 540c with the 167mhz NuPowr processor upgrade, I see
that it has a control panel called NUPowr Cache that (supposedly?) allows some sort
of 128k L2 cache...

My questions are:

(1) I assume this cache is not really ne, but instead is memory used from the RAM or
the HD for the same purpose?

(2) How does this perform in comparison to the REAL L2 cache (which I know was only
available on the 183mhz Nupowr upgrade for the Powerbook 540)?

(3) Would there be any benefit to using this with any other L2-less Powerbook, such as
my 68k 280c, my PPC 2300c or my 5300c/117?

Thanks...

Craig W.

Re: VCDs on 3400

2003-09-02 Thread Esver Camacho
Can I create VCD backups of my DVDs? Can I make VCDs from any QuickTime
movie file?
To make VCD backups of DVD's try and OS X software called Forty-two,
http://mail.e3ware.com/cboo/kaisakura/fortytwo.html. According to
their website, forty-two v1.6 is the easiest way to convert a DVD
into either an AVI movie , a folder of ready to burn bin/cues for
VCDs and SVCDs or a ready to burn .iso DVD disk image on Mac OS X..
It is designed to be simple to use, easy to learn and give quality,
in sync results.

Too bad you don't live in Miami. Our user group is presenting a
seminar (free to members) on how to create VCD's with menus and
chapter breaks on Wednesday. We'll cover Super VCD's as well.

For other software go to http://www.versiontracker.com and search for VCD.

You need a cable called a PrintPack adapter, it's actually not just
a plain cable adapter but there's some logic and buffering in the
cable, too. Ebay will likely be the only place to find the old ones.
They used to be made by a company called GDT and it's likely this

I concur. eBay, though I hate it (and sometimes love it), seems to
be a pretty good indicator of what the market value is for certain
machines. Of course, the more of the part there is on eBay, the
lower the prices. If current 5300ce prices are too high, wait until
eBay is saturated with them... (er, not exactly likely, but who
knows.)
Also, you will need more than a motherboard to upgrade the 190.
You'll also need a PSU board (the 5300's is modular, whereas the
190's is built into the motherboard). Depending on your RAM card,
you may also need new RAM - not all 190 RAM works on the 5300 (though
it's a rare module that won't)...
You might try the swap list. There are some kind hearted listers who
will cut you a deal just to know that their equipment is going to a
grateful Mac user.
Good luck.
Peace,
Drew

yah, thanks guys for fixing my mental typo of Powerprint to
Printpack. I have used one of these cable from each of the brand
owners now, you'd think I'd know the name...

For the PB145 with OS 7.1 you definitely want to research/find one of
the earliest GDT Powerprint cables, that's the only one IMO that may
work with 7.1; when they were still Infowave you could find
knowledgeable people about the GDT era but now that's 2 companies
ago... but it may be worth calling the Strydent guys and doing some
social engineering to see if someone from the old days is still with
the company.

There's some cool factor to the HP Deskwriter or the Apple 600 laser
solutions,certainly.

3400 Corrosion

2003-09-02 Thread Chuck
I recently picked up a few 3400's with problems. I bought them from
someone I know who used them until a few years ago when they were
replaced by newer laptops. None boot at this time but that will change.
In taking one apart I've discovered corrosion in two strange places. The
IF card and window had to be tossed out due so much corrosion that they
became stuck to each other. The bay was corroded too. The bay where the
CDROM/Floppy drive activity lights sits was also corroded but there was
not sign of corrosion on the light or wiring.
What I find strange is no signs of corrosion on the PRAM battery,
although it's dead, and no corrosion on the logic board or any other
components. As a matter of fact, everything looks so clean and like-new
that I suspected a prior rebuild. I've contacted the former owner who
says neither laptop ever required service. They were stored with the
battery in the bay.
Has anyone seen this corrosion problem before?
Does anyone have a spare IR board and window willing to part with?
Chuck

dialup connections and wireless networks with pb 1400

2003-09-02 Thread Frank Modica
Has anyone used a wireless setup with a dialup connection on a 1400? Is it
even worth thinking about? I've got a dialup connection with a nominal
speed of 56k, but it always connects at 31.3k or less.

I've shared a dail-up connection with my wireless LAN, and that works ok
if a little slow.

Sorry about the unclear question. I would eventually like to share a dialup
connection with a wireless LAN.

Right now I don't have any hardware, I'm trying to learn the technical
aspects of wireless networking with a 1400. I found one site with a great
deal of detail about wireless networks. The author doesn't address dialup
connections other than to say that he has sympathy for folks without
faster connections.

http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

I printed out this site but found it somewhat confusing at this time. I'm
not exactly sure where else to start but I'll look inthe archives.

I've got a Siemens WiFI router which includes a modem port (serial db-9)
for dialup connections, the speed depends on the modem of course. I
managed to locate a 56K external serial modem with a db9 cable, and it
works remarkably well. It's of course just as fast as any regular dialup
(ie: not very fast), but being able to be connected to dialup while
anywhere within 100M is pretty nifty.

I have broadband at my house and only bothered to dabble with the dialup
thingy because I'll be on vacation for a week with dialup access _only_,
and being as I'm now so used to using my 'Books wirelessly I just _HAD_
to make it work. :-)

Yes, it's needed to enable the L2 cache built-in to the NuPowr 183mhz

Therefore the answers to your subsequent questions are no, no and no.

Newer also distributed an extension for the NuPowr 500 upgrade whose only
apparent function is to ensure Apple System Profiler reports the
processor speed correctly. Without said extension ASP usually incorrectly
reported the 167mhz processor as a 117 or 133mhz. You can imagine the
PITA that caused Newer, having to explain why a _very_expensive_ 167mhz
upgrade only showed up as a 117! (Truly a 167 runs at 167 with or without
the extension, whether or not so reported by ASP.)
