Orinoco Driver for 1400/OS8.1

2004-08-31 Thread Kenneth Vann
Hi Phil.

These are the current Orinoco driver links I have. Please note, the FTP
Waveland site has been down for about 3 days. I have a email into Proxim
support to find out if the site is down for good or not.

Also I have links for version 4 4.1 of the same software, just with a OEM
name in the installer, if you are unable to make it work with one of these
links let me know.

Also, go to Derek Miller's great site to see how to install wireless on
older PowerBook computer:
http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

Contact me direct if you need aditional help.

yes, system software is entirely independent of the applications. If
you are dropping back from a newer system, you'll have to delete the
newer system folder. If 7.5.3 is newer than the current system you
don't have to.

If you do delete the system folder copy the prefs folder before you do,
some programs store their serial # info there, and some programs (such
as Netscape and Eudora) store all their user data there.

FWIW, I have a 165c 4Mb here running 7.5.3, VM on set at 12 Mb.
Shows an OS footprint of 2,337K 6,395K remaining.

I'm also wondering about the best OS for one of these old 030 Powerbooks.
I have a PB145 running 7.1, which I've been happy enough with; it
seems to have many useful and pretty features (more um, convenient I
guess, than System 6, which I've never installed on a PB), doesn't
have a huge footprint, and allows me to contact the outside via
email.

Re: Powerbook 520 with no PSU

I have been following the current thread with growing gloom...I have a 520

the machine for about 40 seconds, just about through a no-extensions boot

for another 25-35 seconds. Each retry is a little shorter. I get the same
whether the (shot) battery is in or not. It looks like it runs fine other
than this.
Anybody know what might be doing that? Some sort of thermal breaker?? I
have the totally dead one about half chopped apart, and if I know where to
look I might be able to fix or work around the problem.
More than likely it's a thermal shutdown circuit in a voltage
regulator. The problem is this chip might be 90% of the circuitry
and it may be an unusual chip that's hard to find. Oh and it might
also be hard to remove.

Try using a cooling spray on the circuit to see if it will keep the
power supply working. If it does then carefully try applying spray
to individual parts. You can get cooling spray at electronics shops
or Radio Shack.

Failing that, does anyone know which prongs in the machine end of the plug
run the machine, and which charge the battery?? I may get desparate enough
to whip together a run-only PS using the cord of the utterly dead one. It
won't be pretty, but it'll work.
And finally, is that confirmed 16 volts to run?
Thanks for any information you can give!! Don Bowers, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Looking at the connector with the notch down:
Upper Left - Battery power
Upper Right - Computer power
Lower Right - Ground
Lower Left - Ground Sense
Both power supplies are spec'ed at 16.4-16.6V
On the supply that briefly works you might try swapping the battery
and computer power, the battery circuit might be working fine and
will power the computer.

3400 Won't Boot. Help!

2004-08-31 Thread Matt Jordan
Hi,

I had managed to get my power troubles worked out. I got a battery that
would allow the PowerBook to boot without an A/C adapter and everything
seemed fine. I got into class this morning and tried to boot the
PowerBook but ended up getting minor drive noise and no boot. I used the
reset button. Nothing.

I get back home and plug it into an A/C outlet and it chimes almost
immediately but I never get display and the HDD doesn't sound like it is
being actively accessed. I look at Apples Tech arcives online and follow
the instructions to keep the unit plugged into the A/C adapter and hold
down the reset button for 10-20 seconds. I do that and it chimes but does
the same thing: no boot.

I tried holding down the reset button without a battery or power on and it
has no effect. When it is sittig with the drive running doing nothing if
I press Command-Option-Reset it simply chimes and continues to sit there
with the drive spun up and not doing anything else.

Can someone please advise me?

Thanks

Matt

message: The application has unexpectedly quit, because an update to

Note, no HELP with the error message.

Problem with 520 Disk Drive

2004-08-31 Thread Karl Miller
Hi there!

I am the proud owner of a Powerbook 520, but I think
the disk drive is shot. It will take a disk, but then

saying that disk intitalization failed. Now, my
question is, how difficult is it to replace a 520's
floppy drive and where can I find a how to manual on
how to perform this operation?

Thanks.

Re: System 7.5.3

2004-08-31 Thread KG
Are there any big advantages to 7.5.2 or 7.5.5 that justify
dedicating more of my measly 8MB of RAM to the System? I'm waiting
for delivery of a PB160, and had planned to install 7.1 on that as
well. As I recall, I only upgraded to 7.1 from 7.0 because of
 connectivity issues.

I'd like to know what the main distinguishing features of 7.5.x are. Tx.

I think the only thing you would really benefit from is OpenTransport
networking, which was introduced with 7.5.x. QuickDrawGX and AppleScript
were also added, along with a better version of PC Exchange which supported
Zip disks.

System 7.1 would definitely be faster on a system with such a limited amount
of RAM.

If you do upgrade, stay away from 7.5.2 no matter what you do. System 7.5.2
is, roughly speaking, the worst OS in computing history, worse even than the
first release of Windows 95. I think it was rushed out the door to support
the PowerBook 5300, sort of like the 5300 itself. You can get 7.5.3 for free
from Apple, and it is much, much better.
