Re: Would this work on a 3400?

2004-09-12 Thread KG
If you want to install a Systerm Folder to boot off of, just get a
CF-to-PCMCIA adapter for that CompactFlash card and plug it directly into a
PCMCIA slot on the 3400. Format the CF card as a Mac volume and install the
system on it.

I doubt that there is any way you could get a 3400 to boot off a USB device,
or even install a system on one. I've tried a lot with my 3400, but never
that. Has anyone on here attempted it?

Well, I GUESS you could connect them via Appletalk, and have the empty HD in
a 1400 w/ a OS CD running it...

DO you have a desktop w/a SCSI port? That would be the easiest way. Other
than that, where in the USA are you?

Re: Transferring data from PB1400c 166

2004-09-12 Thread Brian
I just replaced the hard drive on my 1400c 166 with a 6 gig from
another 1400. The new drive has OS 0S9.1 and I want to transfer
programs and data off the old drive. Is there any way to connect
both drives in the one laptop or a way of networking 2 1400 laptops
together? The old drive has OS 8.5 on it.

Help! I need the data!

The easiest way, if you have a printer cable, is just to hook the 2
printer ports together and turn on appletalk. Turn on sharing on
one, connect to it from the other, drag files around. You can even
move bootable system folders around that way.

It's not fast, but it always works (unless your appletalk extensions
are corrupt) and you don't have to buy the special SCSI adapters to
let you hook the 2 SCSI ports together (which can be dangerous if
done improperly!)

HTH. If you have 2 ethernet cards you can do the same thing (via
appletalk, only over ethernet) and it's a lot faster. But the
printer cable works as well, is cheap, works out of thebox, and is
reliable.

Fixable? Yes. But it may be more cost efficient to get another 166mhz
laptop/motherboard from Ebay or the Swap List...

>If not I'll swap the memory board and (bigger) hard drive to the
>working 1400c. I tried to remove the hard drive earlier, but after

The ribbon HD cable connects the HD to the mobo on the left side of the HD.
It is tucked in under the plastic border of the bay. When you pull the HD up,
on the left you'll see the orange ribbon. Try to CAREFULLY work the ribbon
downward, out from the plastic it is tucked into. After that, carefully remove the
connector from the HDs pins.

While you're at it, you might as well go on a fool's errand(!) and check to
see if the 117mhz unit's mobo can in fact handle a 166mhz processor. Some
117/133mhz mobos were alledged to be able to...

Looking under the heatsink, in the RAM/processor bay, look at the two chips
on the mobo between the processor connectors, and the RAM connectors. If the
chips have "203 LOW" and "X204 HIGH" then it cannot handle a 166mhz
processor.

But if the numbers above are in the 300's instead of the 200's, then you can
use the 166mhz processor with the C's motherboard.

Re: Best of two PB1400s

2004-09-12 Thread Andrew Noakes
Ha! PRAM reset was what I wasn't doing. If I do Command-Option-P-R
after swapping screens I can now get the 1400c base (known to be
good) working with the 1400cs screen (previously believed dead). I'm
using it now - and just for the record, for my money the Active
Matrix 1400c screen is much better, with more consistent colours and
faster response (less ghosting) than the 1400cs Passive Matrix screen.

I've refitted the 1400c screen (known to work) to the 1400cs base
(still with me?) and done a PRAM reset, but as before I get just a
faint image with no backlight. In fact, the backlight appears to
light in the top right corner during startup, then goes out. No
amount of brightness, contrast or monitor control panel setting
changes make it any better.

As both LCDs work with the 1400c, that suggests the problem with my
dead 1400cs is not the screen but somewhere on the motherboard.
Anyone know if this is fixable?

If not I'll swap the memory board and (bigger) hard drive to the
working 1400c. I tried to remove the hard drive earlier, but after
taking out the two obvious screws it still doesn't want to come out.
Is there anything else I need to undo first?

Thanks for all your very helpful suggestions thus far, and in advance
for any further pearls of wisdom!

Okay, I took logic at one time in my 7+ years(!) of undergrad...

All of the above tells me, barring some control adjustments/PRAM resets, that
something is likely wrong with the cs's mobo..

Joining this discussion late, but if you decide to switch the internals,
remember that the 117's mobo is different from the 166's mobo. The 1400c's mobo
cannot use the 166mhz processor.

Anyway, I just finished switching out a 1400c and a cs's mobo & screen. My
1400c/400 had a 166mhz mobo, and I needed it to use with a 166mhz processor for
a 1400cs/166 I built for a relative. So I gutted my 1400c/400 and removed the
screen, installed all of it on a spare 117/133 mobo, then built a 1400cs/166
on the removed 166 mobo. (If you can follow all of that...)

Did you try zapping the PRAM or setting the monitor settings? When I swtiched
the c screen (& guts) on the old 1400cs mobo I had, I did notice that the
colors were set to 256; perhaps adjusting the settings will help?

Re: Will PB 150 top plastics work on PB 170?

2004-09-12 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
The differences for the 100 series plastic, except the 100, which is
a whole different thing are:

the back of the book: the 150 has way less ports, but you can manage
to cut the plastic.

the screen has various size (from (8" to 10"), so the frame must be
choosen accordingly.

The 150 bottom plastic is slightly different because it has to
accommodate an IDE HD and a whole different logic board, but it can
be managed easisly to fit a 170 in it.

From my one try at breaking one down, I'd say it's pretty easy to swap the
screens. Just be careful with the two plugs that go into the sockets on the
motherboard. There's not much room to get your fingers down there to push
'em in, and on the one I tried it on, they're pretty brittle and easy to
break.

Make sure you have the cable heads planted correctly in the sockets.
The screens are 100% interchangable, so it shouldnt be a screen
problem.

It could be that the original screen was fine, but the motherboard
had the problem.

Would this work on a 3400?

2004-09-12 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hello,

Would this work on a 3400?
Any combo of the following to install a Sys Folder:

USB 1.1 CompactFlash reader/writer or USB 1.1 7-in-1
reader/writer, with a Viking 128 MB CompactFlash card,
and an ADS USB 1.1 Cardbus PC Card that seems a bit
flakey on the 3400 running 9.1 (the USB symbol doesn't
always appear on the desktop).

George

Re: Best of two PB1400s

2004-09-12 Thread Tom and Lisa P
I've pulled the dead screen from the 1400cs, with the intention of
swapping it for the working 1400c screen.

Just out of interest I opened up the case of that dead screen and
I've found that there's a tiny reed switch under the LCD panel
(behind the edge of the case, just about where the Apple logo is)
and it's broken - literally snapped in two. Can anyone tell me what
this reed switch does and whether this could be what's stopping the
display from working? When the machine starts up the display gives a
little flicker but then stays dark.
That might be the sleep sensor. When triggered, it should put the
computer to sleep.

Re: Best of two PB1400s

2004-09-12 Thread nathan

Having torn apart my fair share of 1400's the screen swap would be quick
and easy.. Just pop the end caps off each side of the screen. Remove the
screws. Pop the keyboard, carefully **Very Carefully** rock the screen
connection and transplant it over... Simple as that...

I have a working PB1400c/117 and a PB1400cs/166 with a dead screen.
Would it be easier to swap the working screen onto the 166 machine,
or install the 166 internals into the 1400c? Or is neither really
worth the aggro?

All views gratefully received!
Swapping the screen is much less work.

I would still be intrested in the 3400c.. What would you want for it? Or is
there anything you need for your G3 I could offer as well as a partial trade
or what have you?

Thanks,

FS: 3400c PB (for parts) plus extras

2004-09-12 Thread Caristia
I'm using my "one time to sell" on this list because I decided not to try
to repair my PB.

3400C PowerBook (for parts)
Bought refurbished. Used over a year. Worked beautifully, then the screen
went blank. Chimes on reset, but nothing else.
In good shape w/all little doors and feet intact, trackpad, keyboard
working fine. CD module? Acted funny after I installed Iomega software, but
not mounting on desktop felt more like hardware problem. I have removed the
Hard Drive.

180MHz
32MB Ram
Ethernet/Modem
Dongle
Floppy Drive Module (works fine)
Replaced PRAM battery (includes #8 torx screwdrive to open unit).
LiOn battery w/approx one hour charge
AC adapter
SCSI adapter cable (2') HDI-30 to DB-25
SCSI adapter HDI-30 to DB-25 (w/Dock Switch to connect PB to another Mac

Would like to sell as package. If interested please make offer off-list.
Allow at least $12.00 for shipping (I'll absorb the balance) from zip 72658
(Norfork, AR)
MO only.

THANK YOU

Nancy

Vimage Vpower drivers? (was Powerbook 1400 shows G3 33 Mhz in system profiler)

2004-09-12 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
Well it appears that there are no extensions or control panels for the
G3 processor.
I had a look at the CPU and it was marked "IBM PPC750-EBOL233" so it
looks like there is a G3 inside.
Two other chips on the CPU card are labeled:

"Vpower PB 1400 G3 233 Vimage Corp."
and
"Vpower PB 1400 G3 M-46209"
So it looks like I need the drivers for the upgrade.
A little poking around on the web turned up this site:

which has Vpower drivers with the following caution:
"I haven't a clue as to if these are the drivers one would need with the
Vimage Vpower PB upgrade cards. I don't have a Vimage chip and have no
way to test them. However, I did get them from a site that claimed that
they'll work with "any of the G3 chips" - whatever good that's worth. If
someone could verify this and email me at the address on the contact
page, I'd really appreciate it."

The drivers are in an archive:
" Contents of Vpower_Drivers.sit
Vpower Control (control panel)
vBOOSTER 64-54ver110 (extension)
vBOOSTER 6454ver121 (extension)
Vpower PF G3 Extension 1.1.0 (extension)
VpowerInfo (looks like an application)"
Does anyone else have one of these Vpower upgrades?
Do these look like the correct drivers?
Thanks
