Re: G3 Buying Advice

2005-11-09 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga

Let's put it in this way:

		serial	scsi	usb firewire
	airport LCD	DVD
Kanga yes	yes	no no via
PC card	12"	no
Wallstreet	yes	yes	via PC card	via PC card	via
PC card	13-14"	no
Lombard no	yes	yes via PC card	via
PC card	14"	possible
Pismo no	no	yes yes
	internal	14"	yes
iBook 500G312"	no	no	yes yes
	internal	12"	possible

The 260 USD break point is between the Wallstreet and the Lombard
(for units in good conditions).

Ben

PS. forget about the work-around of using USB pc cards on the Kanga
(feasible but not supported), also forget the floppy internal option
on the Lombard and Pismo (feasible but the module are very rare).

Mind if I ask what the Wallstreet IIs are going for? Haven't found a way

The problem I have around here is that no one seems to know the names of
the mac laptops. Without that it's hard to find out what they're
selling. When you email the seller, they frequently know nothing beyond
turning it on and using it. When you think about it, that's probably
just the way it should be!

Yes I see a lot of those.

Really, I see quite a lot of broken power plugs, and bad solder joints. I
also see a bizarre problem where everything works except battery recognition
which is cured by changing the sound board.

Lombards are still on the expensive side.

Pismos doubly so, although an occasional bargain can be found.

Overall, as I do mostly DVD work the Pismo makes the most sense.

With a Pismo (or Lombard) I can burn a DVD at 2X internally, and at "best
speed" externally, although the Lombard (USB) is hardly better than the
internal 2X, while the Pismo and the external Firewire is competitive
with my desktop machines.

Do you think it is so much faster that you'd really worry about it ?

On the test I performed, admittedly a while ago and quite basic, until you
got to large file transfers there was little to choose between the two - the
latency of the extreme cards seemed much higher than original airport.

Re: G3 Buying advice.

2005-11-09 Thread michel
I have a Wallstreet, Lombard, Pismo, and a Clamshell aswell. The one I
prefer is the fastest the Pismo 500.
Why:?
1. You can put more than 512 mb ram inside up to 1 gig , The other two are
limited up to 512. For Tiger more than 512 is really welcome.
2. You have 2 Firewire(camera connecting, iPod external FW disk and allows
target mode.) And 2 usb> not with the wallstreet(unless pcmcia)
3.Less weight than the Wallstreet.
4.Fastest CPU / and Bus
5.Airport prepared, better receiving with internal antenna.
6.If you want to connect to old old macs use ethernet instead of scusi.
7.I mounted a DVD/CDRW combo in my Pismo.
8. Lombard and Pismo have a better screen than Wallstreet and bigger than
the clamshell.
Why not:?
1. More expensive
2. No scusi or serial port.

Here's my 2 cents I upgraded from a 5300 to a G3 Kanga for a whopping $27 US
via the LEM swap list, and am still able to keep all the extras I had from
before (internal expansion bays and external SCSI things like CD burner,
scanner, HDD, modems, printers) and am still able to run the software
without any new purchases, add into that (unsupported) USB, and built in
ethernet and I think for the money spent you would be hard pressed to find a
better situation. Oh yeah, it runs OS 9.1 like a dream.

Hi Caleb

There are a load of G3 lombards on ebay They are going for around
£150. Which is around $260 so that is under the $300. mark for you
If you got a lombard then you could still use the scsi side to hook
up the 190 for file transfer .

G3 Buying Advice

2005-11-09 Thread Caleb Cupples
Well, I'm looking to spend under $300, so I'm a little limited on what I
can do. As far as backwards compatibility with my 190, it's just the
base package, no external drives or anything, so I'm not looking for
SCSI or anything. Airport would be nice for when I have to travel, but I
can live with just ethernet and a modem. My main issue is that I have a
good keyboard and that there's a version of Mariner Write for it.

Hope this clears things up,
Caleb

All true... and all of the above (500mhz Psimo with 1gb RAM, good battery,
combo, zip, sdisk, etc.) for just over FOUR TIMES the cost of a comparitively
equipped (but with External Combo drive) top-of-the-line Wallstreet.

Add a 500mhz G4 (GEE-FOUR!) processor, like mine, in the Wallstreet and we
still come in below the cost of a Pismo.

...but either will do. Depends on how liquid you are.

The lack of an internal chassis also I think leads to many more logic board

Ummm... yes! Always! Of Course!

Well, it WAS a G3. It did everyting it does now as a 300mhz G3 machine; just
not as fast (obviously).

I bought mine off Craigslist locally (AL) for $350.00. that's less than a
Pismo, right? And with 2 PC card bays & SCSI, as you mentioned, I saw it as a
great deal.

Good point. I guess they all have problems. But the problems I have seen in
Wallstreets -- basically the ones you mention above -- do not tend to cost as
much as a replacement processor, especially Lombard/Pismo processors.

Well, there's SCSI pc cards, G wifi cards, flash cards, probably more. But
offhand, just the option to expand is valuable.

Yes, I do have a bunch of accessories. I guess it all depends on what you
need your 'book to do.

Also true. But I lift weights.

good.

Not a G3 then ?

The cost of the upgrade alone is probably more than a Pismo.

Yup, cache failures on Lombards are common, and Pismo processors can be
damaged when pluging/unplugging them.

But in the tens of G3s I've worked on I've had FAR more issues with
Wallstreets - non-booting, battery charging and power management problems -
than on the Lombards and Pismos put together.

What expansion would you want with the Pismo ?

I agree that unless you need SCSI then the Lombard isn't a preferred option.

But to add FW, AP and USB to your Wallstreet you'd continually be changing
cards and carrying cards and dongles with you - all built in on a Pismo.

We also didn't mention weight and size - the Wallstreets are thicker and
heavier.

I don't want to start anything here, but a Wallstreet is my preferred G3
Powerbook over a Lombard & Pismo. Mine, with a 500mhz G4 upgrade, runs 10.2
also,
with about 384mb of RAM. But before it was upgraded it was a 300mhz and it
still ran OSX.

Lombards and Pismos seem (to me) to be a little buggy as far as their
processors. I have heard of many of them conking out from a bad ROM or
something; and
they are way more expensive to replace.

Wallstreets, for one thing, have two PC card bays. Now for a Pismo, with its
internal airport setup, that is fine, but what about the Lombard? Go wireless
with it, and you can forget using a FW pc card. Wallstreets offer more
expansion options, in my opinion.

Finally, if you're planning to continue to use any of your 190 accessories
(??? Expansion bay HD? ZIP module?) then perhaps the Kanga G3 is your best bet,
as it can use Powerbook 190-5300 accessories. Of course, no built-in DVD
capabilities with that option.

Good luck,

Ivy

Its definetely Pismo. Make sure you have lots of memory in it if you
want to run OS X on it :)

Pismo without question.

Wallstreet DVD drives are quite rare and need a decoder card if you want to
run movies.

Lombard 400s came with DVD and a decoder on the logic board, the 333s came
with CD, so you'd need to find a decoder card and DVD drive for it.

In my experience the Pismo is the most reliable of the G3 Powerbooks, it has
Firewire, a 1GB RAM limit, internal Airport and they all came with DVD
drives.
