Trackpad Climate Control extension, but this "makes the mouse less

Was a newer revision of the trackpads in these machines released?
Would replacing it with a new repair service item solve the problem?

The 2300c is really really bad, and it's a shame because I use that
every day...

As one who bought a PowerBook Duo 2300c upon introduction back in
1995, and still own it, I vaguely remember installing a Trackpad Fix
extension update from Apple. This was reported in TidBITS Issue 312
(January 29, 1996) as follows:

"MailBITS/29-Jan-96
PowerBook 2300c Trackpad Fix -- Last week Apple released the
PowerBook 2300c Update which is supposed to ensure the PowerBook's
trackpad works correctly. Your PowerBook 2300c may already have this
extension installed, but if you don't have a file called PowerBook
2300c Update in your Extensions folder, you can download it from
Apple. These URLs may change; Apple appears to be reshuffling their
PowerBook software. [GD]

"

The above two URLs no longer work. I may still have the extension on
one of my numerous old ZIP disks, but it would not be easy to locate it.

I have two PowerBook 3400c with Kanga logic boards. Back in late
1998, not long after Apple had officially discontinued the Kanga, I
had a unique opportunity for acquiring two brand-new Kanga boards,
and I grabbed them for replacement, with no regret to this day. The
3400c/Kangas are still going strong.

Even if you can find a Kanga logic board in excellent condition now,
which would not be easy, you need to know that not all 3400c RAM
modules are compatible with Kanga boards.

Checking or installing a RAM module in the PowerBook 3400c is

illustrations on pages 50-56 of the Pismo Setup Guide. If you do not

While you did not provide the model number for the NEC printer, I
assume that it is one of their Windows printers. By "cable out is a 25

PowerPrint adapter package, which includes a parallel/serial cable and

Since you have visited the HP website, you may already realize that
this is a known problem that HP claims to be working on. Have you
tried their suggested "workaround":

Your case may be further complicated by the fact that you are going
through a USB PC card, rather than direct connection to a USB port.
Does your USB card come with specific driver? Does it show up on the

The HP DeskJet 350 is known to be problematic with pre-USB PowerBooks.
The very similar DeskJet/DeskWriter 340 works well when connected to a
serial port, which your WallStreet has.

Some balance between largest and fastest with emphasis on fastest.

If a dead hard drive is indeed the only problem with your WallStreet

"2.5-inch drive". That website often lists "limited-time" deals, some
of which may involve a little rebate hassle. From the "deals" that
show up, you can then make a balance judgment among capacity, speed,
brand and price. My own last purchase of a PowerBook drive was a
Hitachi/IBM drive from MegaMacs.com, on a "deal" that I learned through
DealMac.

to that List.

1. Best place to download users and service manuals?
I don't know about the best place, but a logical place for the User

2. Best replacement drive?
By best, do you mean the largest, the fastest, or the cheapest?
3. Isn't there a keystroke that forces the PowerBook to look

For Keyboard Shortcuts under OS 8.5, 8.6, and 9.x:

4. Assuming the HD is the only problem, what is such a PB

You should really check "completed items" on eBay for yourself. When

Among other considerations, the PowerBook 3400c does not support Mac OS 9.2.x,
even though some folks manage to install such with patches. See the following
Apple Support document for system requirements:

not just HDs. And they even catalog some Mac stuff (though there
aren't often any deals to be found by looking for devices marketed
specially for Mac users).
I use PW once in a while. It is not as easy to navigate through for
some items. DealMac often lists limited-time specials, that have to be
pursued quickly.

You might need some digging to find what you need, though.
This was my point. Certain posters seem to assume that some of us have
all the information stored in our heads. In order to assist them, we
often have to do a little, or a lot of, "digging," which they could
have done themselves.

Good drive, decent price ($2.33 per GB), So-so speed (4200 rpm). Very
small buffer.
I just ordered a Samsung 40 GB. Great price ($1.99 per GB). Great speed
(5400 rpm). HUGE buffer (8 MB). Others have reported good results with
this drive.
If someone is in the market for a larger replacement hard drive for a
Kanga, or another PowerBook, but not sure what to get, he can go to
, and do a simple search for "2.5-inch drive."
Numerous deals for different brands, and assorted sizes, will show up.
He can then search the Dealmac Forum, or general Google, for user
experience.

Seagate is not particularly known for the quality of its laptop drives. If I were in

TravelStar drive, such as the following special deal for a 30-gb drive, even though it

Because I gave away my Toast 4 sometime ago, I do not recall whether it

Not quite. Netscape 7.0 and even 7.1 do run under Mac OS 8.6 and 9.1,

We have two PowerBook 3400c on a wireless network with not only Mac desktops, but also
Windows desktops and laptops (Sony Vaio and IBM ThinkPad). Because I did not want to
bother with driver hacks or patches, we use MacWireless 802.11b PCMCIA cards, which
have worked flawlessly out of the box. With this card, your OS does not matter, as it
supports OS 7.5.5 through 9.2.2.

This issue has been discussed numerous times on this List. Others have successfully
used PC cards of assorted brands, most of which cost less than the MacWireless card.
You may wish to search the List archives.

an extra 6x unit on the LEM-Swap List, and it was taken very quickly.

HDI-30 to DB-25 SCSi adapters or cables for your external SCSI drives should be easily
available. If you cannot find one quickly, write me off list.

Broderbund PrintShop runs flawlessly on my PowerBook 3400c with OS 9.1. A full
PrintShop installation requires over 500-mb of disk space. Did you install all
essential files? By today's laptop standards, the PowerBook 3400c does have a small
screen; but I have never had problems with full-screen display of PrintShop calendars,
or any other applications. There are a few things you can easily check. Did you set
the monitor resolution to "800x600 with thousands colors" as instructed for PrintShop
designs?

Back in May you made the same inquiry to this List, and received similar responses,
including mine, suggesting that you search for shareware/freeware
calendar programs, and asking you to explain your needs more clearly. Perhaps you
forgot?

It seems that, having bought The PrintShop, you already have a good application, with
nice calendar features, which you are not using correctly.

Are you somehow dissatisfied with the onboard Ethernet, which has

seven years old, has other limitations.

While I have an all-Linksys wireless network, I doubt that they even

It is unfortunate that you have received conflicting "kind suggestions" from
"experts," who may or may not have personal experience with systems identical with or
at least similar to yours.

For years I have had three PowerBook 3400c's, all running OS 9.1 and all using VST Zip
drive expansion-bay modules. I have also read repeatedly on this List the "myth"
about "native" support by OS 9.1 for Zip drives. With my PowerBook 3400c's sitting
near me at this moment, and their System Folders open, I can assure you that OS 9.1
installed the following:
(1) Applications (Mac OS 9)/Apple Extras/Iomega Folder, which includes Iomega Tools
6.3.1, of 1999 vintage but working flawlessly
(2) System Folder/Extensions/Iomega Driver

There is no need for you to download and install anything else, Iomega or VST. If you
remove the above Iomega items, as one "expert' suggested, then no Zip drive modules
will ever work. While I have no specific knowledge about your PowerBook 3400c, or
your Zip drive expansion-bay module, I would suggest that you try the following:
(1) Reset the PRAM once or a few times
(2) Trash the Iomega Driver Preferences file in the Preferences Folder in the System
Folder, and restart

Good luck!

You did not look at the correct page. The User Guide for your PowerBook 5300 is right
here:

With respect to the StyleWriters, I could only find the User Guide for StyleWriter
1200. I have no idea how different it is from your StyleWriter II.

Secondly, would it be better to use RamDoubler2 to set the memory

Right now you can buy RAM Doubler Version 9 from Software-Blowouts.com

These seem to be two different issues, neither of which is related to your very, very
long quote of the other posts, complete with all trailers.

You did not mention the model of your "Palm Pilot." If it is one of the original old
Palm III, V, or VII models, which "wants to use the modem or printer port," there were
Macintosh adapters for "hotsync" connection to the serial port on a PowerBook 3400c.
In that case it is no longer a USB problem.

If you must use the USB card reader, for uploading images from your SmartMedia memory
card, then you are into the CardBus issue, which has been discussed numerous times on
this List, including several recent threads, which can be found by searching the List
Archives. However, there are inexpensive non-CardBus PCMCIA card adapters for reading
common memory cards (CompactFlash, SmartMedia, etc.) LiveWarehouse.com comes to mind
as a vender for such adapters.

Assuming that I understand your inquiry, no card will add "usb compatiblity" to your
PowerBook. If your PowerBook is already USB-capable, or somehow USB-enabled, then
this or other comparable cards will enable you to connect USB devices.

I use several Belkin Busport USB cards with PowerBook 3400c's, which already work with
other USB cards, such as the Macally.

My Zip drive expansion-bay modules have always worked flawlessly in several PowerBook
3400c's. A quick check of Extension Folders has found Iomega Driver 6.0.6, dated
1999, which presumably was installed along with OS 9.1. You may wish to try one or
more of the following:
1. Trash the Iomega Driver Preference file from the Preference folder.
2. Reset the PRAM several times, which sometimes helps with the operation of hardware
devices.
3. Download and install IomegaWare package 4.0.2, the latest from
.

I do not see why (3) would be necessary, but you never know.

With requests for assistance such as this, it is generally helpful to know the OS
versions, and what drivers/extensions have been installed, whether through the OS or
separately. It is unlikely that the "problem" is due to the PowerBook model
difference.

Since I first suggested on May 1 that you try the generic IomegaWare for Macintosh

While I have not read every response in this thread, I vaguely recall others
