sorry about not snipping the below -- many keys on this keyboard are not

On Fri, 22 Nov 2002, Andrew L. Kershaw wrote:

 Victoria,

You might try JPEGView... JPEGView scales images nicely (using dithering and
anti-aliasing to avoid pixel jaggies, I guess), allows you to present a slide show
with no interface visible and a jet-black border, expanding your pictures to the
fullest dimension without cropping.

It has trouble with newer JPEG pictures if you use the built-in JPEG library, but
fortunately the preferences give you the option of using QuickTime to decode JPEG
files, so as long as you have a relatively recent version of QuickTime, you should be
able to display just about any JPEG file you can find.

JPEGView also does PICT format and GIF, but it handles JPEGs best.

 You can get it here:

 I hope that helps,

Re: PB1400 Parts for a recent convert

2002-05-09 Thread Judy Perry

Imran,

I'm not an expert but I did have a PB1400 for a few years so I can tell
you what I know and perhaps others more knowledgeable can add to it (or,
correct me as the case may be).

  A. I need some ram. Pure and simple I gotta buy some PB ram for
this thing, on the order of 24 to 48 megabytes, ( it has currently the
 stock 8 ).

8MB bites. The machine maxes out at 64 and comes in some wierd config if
memory serves (in other words, I think you have to buy all new ram and
dump the 8 chip).

  B. The Power Adapter that it came with is dead dead dead, and I
want to know if using the power adapters from other powerbooks would charge
 the battery.

--I used the original yo-yo (and its replacement, which is not the same
yo-yo adapter now being sold with Ti  Ice/iBooks -- check before you buy;
you need the ORIGINAL yo-yo or its specific replacement). But it may be
the battery. Sorry, but I live in the San Diego area, or I'd help.

  C. Upgrade options for the processor. What can I expect to get the
processor in here up to, 604e? ( I don't think it is worth that right..,)
or G3 ( G4 is just preposterous right?) ? If so does anyone have a G3
 upgrade kit for the 1400c?.

Sonnet has one (www.sonnettech.com); they're in Irvine in So. Cal.
Depending upon your PB model/config, either this works reasonably well
(excellent for me -- a 5 minute job, really) or it's pure hell (the 133
models, anyone?). Got mine off ebay which, after hearing some list
members' problems, was the way to do it as mine was pulled, working, from
a PB dismembered for parts because something else catastrophic had gone
wrong with the beast.

  D. Lastly, while we are on the subject of upgrades, ( and if this
doesn't qualify as once removed, ignore it) does anyone have any G4 upgrade
stuff for either a PM 7300 or a Beige G3? I have the 7300, but I can try
to get the Beige G3, so I would perfer the zif socket and G4 zif( just
heard rumor about dual G4 upgrade for beige G3, drool...)

Dunno, but try Sonnet and then look on ebay.

Anyway, thanks for your support in this odd transition I am making. ( still
adamant against one button mice stock, but that is ingrained.)

The father of the unibutton mouse, Jef Raskin, had a book out last year
from Addison-Wesley called the Human Interface. He was one of the
XeroxPARC people subsequently lured to Apple. But, I digress. Actually,
I believe several manufacturers -- Logitech or whoever owns them? -- have
multi-button mice for the Mac.

Judy

If I understand you correctly, if it is CardBus, then it cannot be used
on the PB1400, correct? I believe what I have is PCMCIA.

I've been told by an Apple rep at CompUSA that you can do both of these
(and also wireless) via a PCMCIA card...

Re: PB 5300 battery

2001-09-05 Thread Judy Perry

Sue,

Hmmm... I had a seemingly similar problem with my 5300. After going
through 2 or 3 batteries and a new poweradapter or two, it finally worked
itself out.

Not a pleasant thought to ponder, How many batteries power adapters am
I gonna need to buy before this thing finally works itself out?

I know this probably doesn't help...

OK, I have an annoying problem. My PB 5300 doesn't like any battery, it doesn't
like to work without a power adapter. After running for about 20 minutes with
battery (no power adapter), the PB shows the message that I am running out of battery
and it will be shut down in X secunds (?). I cannot read the message because it
happens in 1 second. And the PB shut down with the losing of all my open documents.
This happens with my old battery and the new one.

If I restart the PB with the power adapter, I notice that there is still about 2
hours of batter. What is the problem with this PB? I do not think that it is a
problem with the batteries, maybe the power?

Re: Major Problems for some 1400's with Sonnet Upgrade

2001-07-15 Thread Judy Perry

Hmm

I recently upgraded my 1400 with a Sonnet G3 and I believe was running
8.6. I did not experience any problems. Of course, shortly after
upgrading, I experienced the tragic impact adjustment and now can't do
anything at all with my 1400 as the upgrade reset my appletalk connection
and I can't even pull up the drive on my ethernet network as a result

:(

Re: PB1400 Screen - Toast?

Uhhh, yeah, I came to the same conclusion myself. I had been mad with
grief (snif) but have since decided that I can (a) take it in to be looked
at (I tried your suggestion but cabling did not seem loose); (b) live with
it or (c) think about a used iBook on ebay (tho' I'm loving the
expandability of the PBs).

Thanks for all your help,
