Rebuilding battery on 1xx PBs

2005-03-01 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
These descriptions on <http://macs.freeshell.org/powerbook/index.htm>
look promising. I have an PB 180c I would love to run on battery
again. Has anyone tried these suggestions and perhaps made pics? I
have no idea what awaits me if I open the battery case (and how do I
do that?).

Many thanks in advance,
Nils

Dayna Communicard in PB 190?

2004-09-19 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Hello all,
I just sold a PCMCIA Dayna CommuniCard Ethernet Adapter via ebay (I
used it for my 5300c, also sold)
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5716313082&ssPageName=STRK:MESO:IT
, and the guy who bought it says that it does not work with his PB
190 (though it does with his Wallstreet, so the card is okay). He
wonders if this card might only work with PowerPC-Processors.
Has anybody heard of such a problem with Dayna CommuniCards?

Many thanks in advance,
Nils

Try to get one of the SCSI-Ethernet-Adapters on ebay. I use the
Asante mini en/sc 10T to connect my PB 180c to my G4 (drivers are
available on the web; make sure that you have a PB-SCSI-adapter as
well), and it works ok.

Hope this helps.

Re: erasing disk 1400/ SCSI disk mode

2003-10-26 Thread Nils
adding my .02

you might not want to bother w/ linux, not that it's a bad
idea. Just since the pcmcia slots and sound have no support,
you won't be able to do much. I don't think the optional
internal ethernet is supported either.

:(

I also wanted to use mklinux on my 1400, but was saddened
when i found out I couldn't be wireless with it running
linux. But it runs 9.1 on a 133 48mb, 6.4gb just fine :)

I'm waiting for the 166MHz motherboard and processor to
arrive. Then will break out the soldering pencil and replace
the crystal w/ something faster. And possibly machine a new
heatsink for it to help dissipate the heat faster.

Re: Need help for HD and Farallon Card

2003-10-26 Thread Nils
Whoa. Well. That sucks :( If you're handy with a soldering iron
you might be able to fix it. Alternatively if you bought the
identical drive from the LEM swaplist or ebay you could switch
circuit boards from one drive to the other. This would be good
if you could find the identical drive that had bad sectors. You
could potentially get it for _cheap_ and swap it's board onto
your drive. The key to this is that the drives have to be the
same model number. Not close (it might work), but the same.

As for the soldering iron solution. You could (i haven't tried this
yet) get some metal the same diameter as the pin desolder and remove
the existing broken pin, cut new piece of metal to a good workable
length, insert it through the plastic housing thing and resolder
it to the board. Then cut off any excess. That should work.
Since I haven't tried it yet, I can't report on my success with
doing it, but in theory, if you're careful, it should work just fine.

Re: 540c and internet

2003-10-26 Thread Nils
No. The previous poster was referring to your ISP's
name servers (DNS) addresses being static. Not the ip
address being assigned to your machine as being static.
What he is suggesting is for you to contact your ISP,
ask then what the IP addresses of their DNS servers are
and manually enter them in your TCP/IP setup.

The problems you are describing don't sound browser related.
Just that your machine can not lookup DNS entries.
One tool to help rule out your browser is to get
MacPing ( http://www.macping.com/ ) and use it to ping
a domain name that you know. Like worldcom.com which currently
resolves to 164.109.35.20. If you get MacPing, try to
ping worldcom.com and if you continue to get the DNS error
messages, you've ruled out your browsers as the problem.

So, contact your isp, get their DNS addresses, manually enter
them and your problem should (hoepfully) go away :)

Hmm.. I did buy a newer faster 6.4gb drive a while back.
And you're quite possibly right about the fragmentation.
I'll give it a try again today and see if I have any better
results. I'm quite interested in running the machine on
just CF since with the hdd spun down the battery lasts
s much longer :)

Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Compact flash speed...?

2003-09-05 Thread Nils
So ya, long time since I tried this.

And man.. it sucks. Sadly, it's almost as fun as using
the floppy drive. Transferring data to/from the CF card
on my 1400 caused the system to sort of pause intermittently.

I took my 128MB cf card from the camera that had about 80MB
of pictures on it, and transferred them to the hdd. Now,
it could either be that the system was pausing while accessing
the hdd, but I believe it was while the machine was accessing
the CF card. I did turn on VM and tell it to use the VM, but
at the time didn't have any memory intensive apps on the
machine. I'm going to try again in a few days, but I suspect
will find the exact same results.

Has anyone else tried this yet? I know a few ppl on the list
were talking about it, but don't remember seeing any good
feedback.

howdy. no, the 1400 series use ide/ata 2.5" drives.

I think the original wanted to know the speed of CF as
a method of having faster additional memory in his
1400. (ie. putting the virtual memory on the CF card
instead of on the hard drive)
I'm in the same pickle. I have the pcmcia-CF

You could try taking it all apart and putting it back together.
That solved one of my problems a while back. But unfortunately

No, I do not. But from what I heard or read somewhere, this can be
quite messy. And I do not think that it is worth the effort, as the
PB 180c is too draining: the battery won't last for long.

What do you mean with "battery problem"? The main battery is nearly
dead, of course. It never used to last for more than a couple of
minutes, anyway. The rechargeable lithium battery which stores the
PRAM went down some time ago. Last week, I have soldered a new one in

7.6.1 on PB 180c and modem card for PB 5300c

2003-03-29 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Hi all,

I have just upgraded my PB 180c (with 14 MB RAM) to Mac OS 7.6.1 (the
latest version it accepts), and I am impressed: With inclusion of the
Mac OS 8.1-control panels "appearance" and "desktop", it does not
nearly look as old as it is (8,5 years); it is still as snappy as my
wife's PB 5300c with Mac OS 8.1, and the screen is, despite its
smaller size, better, too (no wonder this PB earned a road apple). If
you own a PB 180 and have enough RAM, I can only recommend the
_switch_ to 7.6.1 (the system takes about 4 MB RAM).

But anyway, the PC card modem of the PB 5300c needs replacement.
There are plenty of modem cards on ebay available, mostly for
Win-Laptops, and I wondered if any of these might be suitable for the
5300. Does anybody know which ones can be used on our machines?

Many thanks in advance,

Nils

I would definitely do the swap. I had to do it backwards (from broken
logicboard with 16 MB and 1 MB VRAM to functioning one with 8 MB and
512k), and I still regret it. With 1 MB VRAM you have more colours
and the picture *feels* sharper. I do not think that you will get a
noticeable speed gain, though. However, the 8 more MB are nice as
well.
The swap is fairly easy to do if you have the service manual and a
8-torx driver at hand (with some practice you can do it in 5 minutes).

Hope this helps.

I have done this two times before. At the first time, I had no
soldering experience whatsoever. The powerbook still does work, so I
suppose everything worked well. You have to strip down the logic
board totally, so that you can lift it out of the case (which may
take some fiddling). The instructions on internet were nice, but when
you see the connector, you will probably know what to do anyway.
Good luck!

Re: Formatting Norton-protected hard disk

2002-12-10 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
I have finally been able to format the drive: I connected a
SCSI-drive to the powerbook and pressed command-option-shift-delete
right through the whole boot process (I think this is important,
because when I released the keys too soon, norton disklock would pop
up again). The powerbook drive did not mount, but I was able to
format it with the apple tool drive setup. Now, the drive is fine.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

Formatting Norton-protected hard disk

2002-12-08 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Hi all,

I have got a 500 MB IDE hard disk drive, which came in a PB I bought
at ebay for replacement parts for my PB 5300c (it stopped to freeze
randomly, at last). This hard disk is very thoroughly password
protected by Norton disklock. I have not been able to access or even
format the drive, neither with a system floppy inserted nor in SCSI
mode. Are there other ways to circumvent this protection?
As always, any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Re: Random freezes on PB 5300c

2002-12-02 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Hi all,

contrary to what I have stated several days ago, the problems with my
PB 5300c have remained.
The symptoms are:
- random freezes during startup or later
- when pushing the start button (with and without the power cord
plugged in), a klicking sound can be heard, but nothing happens.
Sometimes, command-option-start helps, but sometimes not (in this
case, the reset button is the last resort).

I am pretty sure that it is not a software issue, but I have tried
everything else I can think of (replaced keyboard, track pad, power
cord, removed extra RAM). Can the logic board or the built-in RAM be
the culprit? Every hint and every suggestion is very, very much
appreciated.

Thanks, Bruce and Drew (yes, you were the one, thanks again)! The
RAM-card looked seated alright, but after removing it the
aforementioned problems have (apparently, knocking on wood) ceased.
Do you think it was just the seating or could the card have gone bad?
(I have checked it with TechTool 2 and no problems showed up)

Random freezes on PB 5300c

2002-11-17 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Hi all,

my recently acquired PB 5300c shows the annoying behaviour of
frequently and randomly freezing, even with all extensions off. When
shutdown, the computer does only reluctantly start with the help of a
forced restart. When put to sleep by shutting the display, it
crashes, too.
My problems might have to do with the exchange of the original
trackpad against one of a PB 190. This was suggested to me by one of
the list members to gain the functionality of the button trackpad,
and it has worked alright - except of the crashes, of course.
Has anyone who did this swap experienced similiar problems or do they
lie elsewhere?

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Have you turned on "used jointly" (or something like that; it is
called "Gemeinschaftlich nutzen" in the German localized system; it
is the second item of "Get info") for your hard disk in question?
Otherwise it will not show up in the Chooser. Another point to
consider: you have to make sure that AppleTalk and the printer do not
use the same port.
Hope this helps.

PB 190 not starting up

2002-10-24 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Hi all,

I have got a problem with my PB 190cs: it won't start up, whatever I
do. Plugged in the green light above the screen glows steadily (which
already is, at least in my experience, highly unusual), but it does
not react to any keyboard stroke (or the little button at the back).
I have even tried to remove the PRAM battery, but this does not
change the situation.
Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Express Modem DAA trouble

2002-10-12 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Has anybody had trouble with the Apple Express Modem DAA? The modem
in my PB 180c works fine, but I do not get a connection, the modem
tells me that it does not get a carrier signal. The modem cable is
fine, too, so I suspect it has something to do with the DAA.
If anybody would share his/her experiences with me, I would be most grateful.

Trackpad button function on PB 5300cs?

2002-09-23 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel

Hello,

recently, I have acquired a used Powerbook 5300cs. It runs fine with
40 MB RAM and MacOS 8.6 (newly installed). However, I am not able to
activate the trackpad button function (usually in the trackpad
control panel), I do not even have the option to do that.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Powerbook 1xx lithium battery replacement

2002-08-17 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel

Hi,

I am new to the list, so I do not know if the subject has been covered lately:

My beloved Powerbook 180c changes time and date all the time. I am
pretty sure that this has to do with the lithium battery (now more
than 8 years old) which is supposed to make the computer remember
those things.

I have got a copy of David Wadson's excellent "Powerbook: Repairs,
Upgrades & Installations V3.0", but it does not cover this subject
completely.
Has anyone out there succeeded in replacing the old Powerbook 1xx
battery with a new one? How can it be done?

Many thanks in advance,

Nils
