Gotcha; and now that I rethink it, the entire quotation
sounds like a Zappa review!

Well, perhaps it requires the use of certain illegal psychotropic substances
to understand Hakim Bey, but the way I always looked at it, it's possible
for insanity to be subtle. If you listen to some pieces of music, they
appear straightforward at first, and it's only with repeated listenings that
the more mindtwisting elements come out.

If you listen to Pink Floyd, or haujobb or Nine Inch Nails, you'll know what
I mean. ;)

Sorry I don't have a digital camera at the moment, the card was
branded Transcend, it started life as 8mb but had the pads for 8 more
chips, it was a simple matter to fit the extra chips (and de-coupling
capacitors).
once re-built with EDO (all I could get at the time) it worked fine
provided I only used the apple 4Mb card, with the 8Mb card I got
memory errors, I re-built the card yesterday with the correct FPM
chips and now my 1400 has 64Mb of ram and it works fine.
unfortunately the Japanese site only appears to have a photo of the
hacked card and no other details, if I can find out more then I will
post it here.

I also have a similar problem with a PB1400/177 (now a 133 using a
'hacked'166 processor).
I have 2x 24Mb cards and if I have the 8Mb module in it I get memory
errors (the 8Mb IS ok as it works in any other combination) but the PB
is fine with the 4Mb, in my case I think that the problem is due to
the fact that I re-built one of the 24Mb cards using EDO chips in 1 of
the banks, as far as I can ascertain, the PB will try to interleave
the RAM when you have 8+8 & 24+24 (matching banks), a 32Mb and a 16Mb
will look like 2x 24Mb to the PB and unless they are identical chips
then they probably will not interleave.
I have just got some more FPM chips today (I bought a box of 60 old PC
notebook SODIMS for £15 to rob the chips off) and I will re-build my
24Mb card and see if it works ok.
Also I am trying to work out the details on the Japanese site to hack
the 8Mb card to 16Mb, if this works then I will also try to do the
same to the motherboard and see if I can get the PB up to 80Mb!!
Ben.

2002-04-01 Thread Peter S. Kim

I just got back from vacation and read this tread. I have a 1400 with
this problem, but it has a problem with all stacked ram modules. I can
get all 64 megs recognized though, by going to restart from the menu.
Apparently, there was a last minute change in the memory specs from
Apple, and there is a powering issue with a 'cold' start. I'm not
familiar with electrical engineering jargon, so that's about all I can
understand.

I know one can get 64 megs in the old machines. For example, I have
a 32 and a 24 meg card stacked, + the 8 soldered on my mobo (older
machine). It would seem that having 3 cards with one of them the
apple 8 meg card, is sometimes trouble.

It could be that the 8 meg modules are just touchy. A friend who
overclocked his bus on a 1400 found that the 8 meg module, when
present would crash the machine. Perhapts the 8 meg modules came in
different specifications ?

Hmmm...I don't find a reference saying it has to be matched pairs (at least
not in v.2.8 of the GURU app). As a matter of fact, under 56MB it suggests:

8 MB in Apple slot
1 PB1400-24M
1 PB1400-16M
__or__
8 MB in Apple slot
1 PB1400-48M

These certainly aren't matched pairs.

I continued looking at the other RAM variation with no luck. Heck, I even
went and checked Mr. Rutabaga Head and Mr. Java with no luck. I do have to
concede that I didn't check all the variants of Mr. Rutabaga Head (Cowboy,
Hillbilly, Rastafarian) only Continental.

One note, I do like the "poink" (or "poke-in-the-eye") sound you get when
clicking on the little picture icons in the upper right corner :^)

This, also, worked. It would appear, then, that the problem was the 8MB
"Apple module" that I installed in there -- I guess the /117 only will work
with its original 4MB module?

Again, many thanks.

My GURU 2.9 says, under Macintosh PowerBook 1400cs/117 (this being my
base unit), Memory tab, 56MB selected:

8MB in Apple slot
1 PB1400-24M
1 PB1400-16M
__ or __
8MB in Apple slot
1 PB1400-48M

I don't know where you're getting the pairing bit from.

You didn't read it very well. If you go down the pull down menu to
56 MB RAM on the RAM page, it does say PRECISELY that.

Im not sure if is the apple card or one of the other cards. I also
dont know if it matters if its the older version of the 1400 or the
newer one. Sometimes having 3 modules is trouble. Try adding the 4
meg apple card back in and see if you can get to 60 megs.

And actually I think there's something erroneous in its entry; it says

A "third party" memory expansion slot allows piggy-backing of up to two
additional memory cards. (NOTE: A 32 MB or 48 MB module cannot be paired
with any other module.)

Since I have a 16MB on top of a 32MB, this seems definitely wrong :-)

And you were right, along with John McGibney and the others who suggested
this. It now comes up with 56MB. This is a 1400cs/117 if that makes any
difference -- does this problem seem to be more common with older 1400s?

Thanks, you guys!

Incidentally, note to Paul Nelson: GURU (at least version 2.9) does not
say anything about the RAM cards needing to be matched, nor does it appear
in the Service Manual or User's Manual.

The Apple removable module is actually only 8 megs, with the other 8
megs soldered on the motherboard. I have a theory that if you take
off the apple 8 meg card, everything else will work. Sometimes
having 3 RAM modules makes for a finnicky PB1400.

There's no Apple 8MB module in the unit, just the 16MB base module, and then
the 16MB stackable and 32MB stackable.

If I removed the base module, I'm still maxed at 48MB, so I don't want to

They don't necessarily have to be matched in size but I recall that there
can be problems when combining different manufacturers and/or speeds.
Especially with earlier modules installed in the first series of 1400s (ie.
the 117MHz machines). Later releases tended to be more compatible.

I had a PB1400/133 that worked perfectly with a combination of 32MB + 16MB
modules. The 16MB module was installed when the 1400 was new and I purchased
the 32MB when the 1400 was about 3 years old. Even at the time I bought the
32MB module I was sweating it out wondering if it would work when I got it.
I lucked out

It's likely that if you order a 16MB module from the same place it will work
with the 32MB you purchased. However if you can return the 32MB and buy two
24MBs that would be a better solution. A 48MB would be best but very
expensive.

Basically it seems to be a crap shoot as to whether old and new modules will
work together.

1400 RAM irritation

2002-03-25 Thread Cameron Kaiser

Elation turned to screaming this afternoon after my 1400's new 32MB RAM module
arrived. Previously, the unit had a 16MB "base" module (upgraded from the
original 12MB module), plus another 16MB stackable module, and all of this
worked.

To test the 32MB module, I pulled the 16MB stackable module and put in the
32MB module alone, and this worked, too.

What does NOT work is the 32MB stackable module and the 16MB stackable
module *together* -- I get a RAM error on startup, and only 48MB of the
ostensibly 64MB I should have is recognised. In any configuration, no
matter which one is first on the motherboard and which one is stacked on
top, the two modules will not coexist. Yet each will work independently.

Short of something horrible such as a shot connector plate (I sure hope
not) on the stackable modules, what else could be happening?

This is a 1400cs/117, upgraded to a 1400c screen, with a Sonnet G3/333 +
512MB cache, 48MB RAM (at the moment :-/), Best Data 56K modem card, and
8-bit Apple video expansion card, running 8.1.
