We also got an error message after trying it. Now we have a perfectly good

no. Well, at least the couple I've got give a red error light when you
stick one in any LiIon packs. Anyone have any other result?

Interestingly, there's an eBay vendor who regularly sells the VST5000

Before you chuck this battery, try this routine.
1- Launch IBR with the right hand slot empty.
2- When asked, insert the battery.
3- You should see "extended precharge"
4- Let it run (maybe as long as 20 min.)
5- If it doesn't work try again. After 3 or 4 times with no success,
then give up on it.

Don't expect the programmes to pass the battery with flying colours, even
though the battery takes a full charge and functions well. Go to Smart
Probe in EMMpathy and pay attention to what it tells you is the maximum
capacity of the battery. If it tells you it's 1752 mah, (or better, as
there are batteries which have better capacity than the Apple ones) then
just keep going till it fills that capacity.

Hi,
You need some of the PB500 restoration programmes, like EMMpathy
and the Mac one (whose name escapes me) I wrote a small tretise on the
subject which I'll forward from my battery file.
BTW, who wants a copy of the 500 take apart video? You have to be
willing to copy it twice, and pass it on to two other listers, etc for
free. That way I'll copy mine once and send it to cary on the chain. This
should be old enough to fall into the public domain.

Two different manufacturers of the basic battery cells.

BP may have been Panasonic (Matsushita) cells. BS may have been Sanyo
cells.

Anyway, there were two different basic cell manufacturers.

BTI was able to knock-off the 500 battery, but it behaves a little
differently than a gen-u-wine Apple battery.

Perhaps the firmware in the in-battery microprocessor is a little
different than that in the Apple battery.

BP = Panasonic Cells
BS = Sanyo Cells

Self-rebuilding is difficult and potentially dangerous.

New cells for a Lombard/Pismo, for example, cost $53 (2000 mA-H), and up,
whereas a complete brand new battery can be obtained for an additional
$60 to $70, depending upon how hard one looks, and where.

BatterySpace.com is but one source of 18650 Li-Ion cells for 1999/2000
PowerBooks.

Other 'books require different cells, at higher or lower prices.

In some sizes, the 18650 being but one example, there are at least three
capacities available from the cell manufacturers, and third-party battery
manufacturers/importers are taking advantage of this fact by offering
extended capacity batteries at additional cost.

Watch out for cheap, low-capacity cells, which might be offered for
slot-car and other consumer uses, and which are unsuitable for 'books.

Just a FWIW aside: The PowerEx folks who make a great NiMh charger for
AA camera batteries claim that NiMh looses about 3% of their charge
every day. I can confirm that batteries that have been sitting around
for 4-6 weeks are almost useless unless recharged. I can also confirm
the LiIon battery in my Sony camcorder does not suffer that problem.
But LiIon batteries do seem to be fussy, potentially dangerous, and not
supported by Apple. Go with what Apple wants you to go with for any
particular model. Also NiMh batteries can be charged quite quickly.
I've seen 20 minute chargers for AAs, though 8 hours gives you about
10% more charge and longer battery life. I always slow charge mine.

Because Apple says so! The prototype 5300s did have LiOn

battery rumors. I'm not going to say what happened because I
don't know and the story is clear as mud. But something happened
and Apple replaced the LiOn with NiMH and redesigned it to not
charge LiOn.

Then the 3400 and latter the G3 came out and they do have LiOn.
They can charge and use either NiMH or LiOn.

--

___

Would those have been the ones associated with reports of fire?

Yes

Wasn;t that at a very early time in the development of Li-on cells.

Yes

Would anyone have any information as to whether a laptop battery
should NOT be rebuilt with Li-on cells?

The biggest problem with rebuilding a LiON is cell availability.
The are rarely available as individual cells and finding the right
form factor cells is going to be harder still.

You would only want to rebuild a LiON battery pack with LiON cells.
There is a part inside the battery packs which tells the computer
(charging circuit) what kind of battery it is. If you were to
rebuild a NiMH pack with LiON cells the pack would still be
identified as NiMH and the results could be BAD (tm).

--

???

The Nimh cells I have charge at a slower/lower rate than the Lion
cells I have For various things around the house.
Sellers of the Lion cells say they will charge in any charger but
sell special ones for high charge rates that recarge very fast.

I have no idea what form factor fits inside the 5300 battery pack
But recently looked for 4/3 A batteries for my7 1400 and Li-on
batteries that size are available.

But as you say the electronics may( or may not? ) present a problem
in switching over.

Current limits, float / cutoff voltages and in some cases temperature
limits are all likely different between the two. Lithium are likely
to have a higher maximum charge current. Thus if you use a NiMH
charger it will take longer. The float / cutoff voltage is likely
different between the two. I don't know what they are. But they are
almost certainly different. If the charger voltage is lower than the
battery it won't charge fully. If it's higher it will likely damage
the battery.

The thing I've found with all rechargeable batteries is that the
better the charger the longer they last and the more operating time
you get from them. Which means that using a charger meant for a
different type of battery is nothing but trouble.

Any electrical engineers out there with suggestions?

The biggest problem with rebuilding a LiON is cell availability.
The are rarely available as individual cells and finding the right
form factor cells is going to be harder still.

You would only want to rebuild a LiON battery pack with LiON cells.
There is a part inside the battery packs which tells the computer
(charging circuit) what kind of battery it is. If you were to
rebuild a NiMH pack with LiON cells the pack would still be
identified as NiMH and the results could be BAD (tm).

The Nimh cells I have charge at a slower/lower rate than the Lion
cells I have For various things around the house.
Sellers of the Lion cells say they will charge in any charger but
sell special ones for high charge rates that recarge very fast.

I have no idea what form factor fits inside the 5300 battery pack But
recently looked for 4/3 A batteries for my7 1400 and Li-on batteries
that size are available.

But as you say the electronics may( or may not? ) present a problem
in switching over.

Any electrical engineers out there with suggestions?

I'd just get two batteries and the LIon charger. You just have to remember to
take the battery out and put it in the charger when it gets low.

LiOn have higher energy density than NiMH. Meaning they will run a

Yeah, hate to tell ya, but I ended up selling my 1400 due to battery
prices.. Being it was about the same as buying one for my Wallstreet.

Re: Rebuilding PB170 batteries

2005-02-13 Thread martin
I posted detailed instructions for 100-series Powerbook battery
rebuilding on several occasions. These I'm told, are archived on The
Pickles site, and Grijan's FTP server as well. I found a clip from
these posts at <
mail-archive.com/powerbooks@mail.maclaunch.com/msg09926.html >

If you have time, you could troll the archives for the original posts
(from 2001 - 2003). Meanwhile I'll go see if I can find the complete
set ( packaged in .sit format ), which I think I have archived.

If there is interest in this subject ( the same techniques apply to
any rechargeable battery packs ), I'll be happy to re-post this guide
wherever anyone is generous enough to host it. Anyone with a
website/FTP/server who can post this small file?

Hi,
Does anyone know of a web-site or archive that has information on
re-building the battery pack for a PowerBook 170? I understand that they
are standard-sized NiCad's inside, and I'd like to give it a try.

3400 won't restart after changing batteries

2004-09-20 Thread Mark J. Pearson
My 3400 is a gem except for a couple of quirks: When battery one is
getting low, I shut down, swap batteries, and attempt startup. Nothing
happens. It doesn't seem to matter which of the two batteries I swap
to, it won't start up. It starts up fine if I plug it in.

Secondly, after I attempt to swap batteries, some of the PRAM settings
(date, time, etc.) reset to what must be a default.

It is a PRAM battery problem? I'm familiar with Macs (since 1989) but
this is my first PowerBook.

TIA,
Mark

New 1998 (Wallstreet) and 1999/2000 batteries are being made in China,
apparently to the original specs.

Fry's Electronics has them in stock. Its Outpost.com site could have
them, too.

Some direct importers have been selling them on eBay.

Wallstreet Batteries

2004-09-09 Thread BDavis
Hi Listers...
I'm new to this group and signed up in hopes of finding info and
support on my Wallstreet. It's now about 5 years old and of course the
original battery is dead. Also the PRAM or Clock battery is dead. So no
'mobility' and no correct date.

I'm not afraid to take it apart to 'fix' the PRAM battery but at nearly
$50 each I'm thinking there's got to be a cheaper fix.

I've opened the main battery pack and find that there are 12 Li-ion
batteries soldered together.. and could be replaced for less than $8
ea. IF I wanted to go to the trouble.

But since I almost never use it away from AC power and with the main
battery out I'm thinking here's an empty bay/space that maybe some
other type of PRAM battery would substitute (and could also be made
much easier to get to).

So there is the dilemma and the challenge. I'd appreciate hearing any
suggestions or comments?

Thanks...
Bill Davis

Re: PRAM Batteries for PB 1400

2004-08-03 Thread Kenneth Vann
New PRAM batteries can be had new for less than $20.00 each with the wiring
already made up. http://www.powerbookguy.com/1400.html

The PB 1400 takes eithor 1 or 2 PRAM batteries, depending on your model.
Remove the expansion bay cd rom/floppy and the main battery, look up into
the top of the computer and you will see eithor 1 or 2 black plastic parts,
this is the PRAM batteries. They are under these plastic covers.

A pain to change, but it can be done. I have done two. My first, I bought
the battery from a Apple dealer, $50.00+ each, my second, I bought the
batterys from powerbookguy.com.

Live and learn.

AFAIK, there's nowhere you can buy New 'new' batteries for the 500
series. 'Neew' ones are old new stock, meaning they've been sitting on
shelved for years.

However, I believe this place <http://nicdlady.com/laptop-a.htm> sells
rebuilt batteries.

The best solution is to re-cell existing ones. The NiCad Lady, above,
also sells cells. I don't know if she sells them by the sea shore.

However, I believe this place <http://nicdlady.com/laptop-a.htm> sells
rebuilt batteries.

The best solution is to re-cell existing ones. The NiCad Lady, above,
also sells cells. I don't know if she sells them by the sea shore. Here
is a howto:

Re: Recycling batteries

2004-07-10 Thread Howard R. Katz
Good info--and a lot of the drop-off places in my area are not only
convenient, but were ones that I knew about (most cell phone stores take
back batteries.)

One place not listed that I know takes batteries is Radio Shack--from
mercury button batteries from watches to cell phone and computer
batteries.

No rechargable battery is safe to put in the trash--even the "environment
friendly" ones should be recycled. It's the best way to keep heavy metals
from contaminating ground and water supplies.

Recycling batteries

2004-07-10 Thread R. P. Bell
As a Powerbook user for many years, and having gone through my share of
rechargeable batteries, I'm concerned about where to put those batteries
that are no longer of any use. I just found a non-profit service that
provides a drop-off program through many retailers. You might be
interested:

http://call2recycle.com/index.html

Positive point: If you're into recycling through a registered non-profit
agency, your donation is tax-deductible (in US). That alone makes it worth
my trouble. I understand that all of the nationwide Target Stores
participate in the program. Very convenient.

Re: Wall St. Batteries, charger, unorthodox methods

2004-07-06 Thread VidaVerde
There is one very strange thing, I have found that if I massage one of my
more recalcetrent (sp?) batteries and then even tap it lightly on a
hard serface
(about as hard as you might tap a stuck jar lid of Mayo), the Wall St. charger
I have will then recognize the battery and usually charge it enough to run
the PowerBook about 30 Min.

Easy. the little tin straps that connect the cells are corroding and
have a bad contact. when you bang it, it brings them into better
contact again. sadly it won't carry on forever.

you can saw it open and re-solder the straps (i have done this
sucessfully on my mobile phone which had EXACTLY this symptom)

However, the downside is that SOLDERING BATTERIES IS VERY DANGEROUS
AND THEY MAY WELL EXPLODE.

mine didn't though. be quick and minimise heating. ButI would wear
eye protection and be ***very*** careful if I were you.

One thing I learned the hard way--don't try recharging BTI 500x batteries
in a VST external charger. I killed 2 batteries that way on different
occasions. (I don't know if it's the EMM that's dead or the battery
components themselves. I was told later that the combo was incompatible.)

Subject: 5300 batteries?
Hi all,
I'm collecting some info about PowerBook 5300 batteries for my 5300
FAQ (yep, I'm still working on it!).
I know some of you have recently bought new batteries. What have
your experiences been? Have they lasted 2+ hours? Where did you buy
them?
Does anyone have any 3rd party batteries (VST, BTI, etc.)? I think
I've got a dead BTI battery around here somewhere, so I don't have
any good info on them... How do their run-times compare to the Apple
batteries? Do you know the mAh ratings for your 3rd party batteries?
Any info would be much appreciated!
Peace,
Drew
--
I picked up a three-pack from megamacs (hmm, 17.99 for 3 or 19.99 for
1) and one of them lasts about 1:20 or so, the other two are 30-40
minutes. I have run the recondition program about three times for each
of them. This is in a cs, 24MB, running 8.1.
I also have a dead dead dead BTI model, came in a eBay 'Book. Is there
a way to rebuild them? Maybe when I finally get around to the
500-series batteries I have here too.

5300 batteries?

2004-04-30 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Hi all,
I'm collecting some info about PowerBook 5300 batteries for my 5300
FAQ (yep, I'm still working on it!).

Peace,
Drew

Yup. And I bought some from a Georgia outfit, for real, real cheap.

Right now, Blackbird batteries are getting very rare. Ditto, Wallstreet
batteries.

1400 and 190/5300 batteries are still readily available.

Fry's Electronics is a "bricks and mortar" institution, all over the west
from California to Texas, established by Randy Fry and his brother.

Outpost.com is a bankrupt company with a former internet presence which
Randy Fry bought at a court-ordered liquidation sale (Randy was
simultaneously in negotiations with Egghead/Newegg.com, and when the
Egghead/Newegg.com negotiations broke down, Randy bought Outpost.com as
his "Plan B").

While Outpost.com may not show the BTI PB 500 batteries, some Fry's
Electronics stores may still have these batteries.

Certainly, their Sunnyvale store has two Wallstreet batteries right now,
but no Blackbird batteries. I was there less than five hours ago.

Perhaps the Campbell store, or one of the two dozen other "bricks and
mortar" stores throughout the west might have them.

I have little doubt that Outpost.com may have none.

But, as I have stated, and implied, Outpost.com and Fry's Electronics are
different institutions, with different product lines and different
inventories.

You'd probably have to go into a store physically for the Blackbird batteries;
most likely they're a remainder or closeout item limited to stock on hand.
That's how I found my BTI 1400 battery cheap (a closeout at a local Fry's).

Yes. The 500 series was last made in what, 1995, and was the only
series to use this style battery.

Exactly what happens when the batteries have been sitting
for so long?
They die.

And how much time will you get from the new batteries that have
been sitting for a long time?
You pays your money, you takes your chances...I'd wager not many of
them would hold more than an hour.

Also, I found several websites selling used PB batteries. Perhaps the
used
ones would be a better deal? Unless of course, the used ones too have
been
sitting around for many years!!

Used ones are just as bad or worse...the problem is that all
rechargeable batteries have a finite life span.

The fix is replacing the cells with new ones. The hassle is the
intelligent battery circuit that Apple saddled these batteries with.

Good idea, but typical of Apple ahead of it's time and problematic.
It's too bad, it's really the only blemish on what was otherwise a
stunning tour de force for Apple. First laptop with a trackpad, first
laptop with built-in ethernet, one of the first with active matrix
color, definitely the first with thousands of colors (albeit in an odd
screen resolution), a full range of ports, dual hot-swappable
batteries...(hmm can you tell it's my favorite powerbook, even though
it's underpowered for today. But my 540 is still useful today, whereas
all of the PC laptops we bought in that time frame have long been
relegated to paperweight status.)

Hi Andrew,

If Battery recondition doesn't work (if it doesn't allow you to begin, the
battery may be too weak to get started), send it to me, and I'll do a
recondition for you off my Lind 2 Supercharger - no charge (er, no fee),
just a helping hand!

Hi all,

I received a Duo 280c today. It came with a Type 1 battery, which,
to my understanding, should work fine with the 280c if a little
underpowered. Anyway, if I leave the battery in, the Duo won't
boot. If I insert it after the 280c has booted, the battery icon in
the menubar shows that the battery is fully charged, but then the
whole thing shuts down without warning.
That is an evil battery. You must use Battery recondition to whip it
into shape. Odds are, the first time you try it, the machine will
crash and die. Keep trying to recondition the battery (at least 3-4
times). If that doesnt work, about the only hope is to use a Lind
Supercharger to try and recondition it, but I dont know if anyone has
had sucess with Type 1 batts and the supercharger (Type 3 is the
best).

Worst case, you can crack the battery open and replace the cells.

Blackbird Batteries

2004-03-01 Thread Mattox, Thoma
Hello all:
I have three batteries for my PB 540c. Due to a remodel, at my house, the
computer sat unplugged for nearly 6 months. I recently started using this
again, and all three batteries have been drained. I have tried numerous
things to resurrect them (the multiple insert and run of Intelligent battery
recond and the VST utility programs). I tried to run the Lind Battery
program but couldn't (I have a PPC upgraded machine). Is there anyone
willing to try to get these to work, you can keep one of the batteries for
your trouble (I will cover shipping)? I was assuming that one of the
rechargers might have better luck than me...

Ideas would be appreciated.

5300 Batteries, ethernet

2004-02-23 Thread Jeff Hubatka
Is there a way to bring back a 5300 battery to life? I have a BTI model
that doesn't show up in the control strip at all, and Battery
Recondition doesn't see it either.
Along the same lines, should BR be run more than once per battery? When
I ran it on the others, they showed 2:30 of life. I was in another part
of the room, but at around 2:10 (only seemed like five minutes later)
it gave the low power warning and dimmed the screen. By the time I
moved six feet to get the AC plugged in, I had the immediate sleep
warning.

Second question: I have the Focus MV-16EN card installed in a cs with
the 1.04 software, and it seems to be recognized - but going to the
chooser freezes the computer. If I open the TCP/IP control panel first,
I can't close it after making the changes to Ethernet Adapter 1. The
AppleTalk CP unexpectedly quits if I try that one first.

I have successfully used a WaveLAN Gold on this one though in 7.5.5,
8.1, and 8.6.

Re: Suggestions for Powerbook 1400 internal batteries

2003-11-14 Thread Bigbikerbo
This is strange to me, that so many folks are trying to rebuild their
batteries. I had a 1400, and as I noted here before, you can buy a NEW 1400series
battery from Wegenermedia.com for $45 ea-- I ordered two from them about a month
ago- I think total was around $110 delivered for two main batteries, and I got
the PRAM battery as well with them--it was around $10 as I recall..

I researched the rebuild route on the battery, and the cheapest i could find
the individual cells put me at just under $50 for parts alone. I got the PRAM
battery as well, as I wasn't sure about it--my date & time seem to be holding
fine, but occasionally the machine wouldn't boot.. Of course you can't for
SURE say that's the PRAM, but when I got the new battery and new PRAM battery
in, she's running steady as can be!

I just thought it's a LOT less expensive to buy than build, not even
considering the time necessary to do it right. I found that I could get the cells for
PRAM batteries, but it was $7.50/cell + shipping (newark.com), and then i had
do the soldering & test it all, and if I screwed up anything, newark wasn't
going to give me my money back.

Anyway, just seems to me the intelligent thing to do, and I was quite happy
with the results...

All the best,

Tom

Those cells aren't available at any RatShack of which I'm aware. Common
misunderstanding 'round these here parts, you can't use just any ol' cell
what looks like the originals. You gotta use the original Vanadium
Pentoxide Lithium type cells.

digikey gets ~$7 each for tabbed VL2330 cells (two needed for one PRAM
battery), 10 for $66, so the $16 for a complete pram battery looks to be
the best bet. Assuming those are fresh batteries that is . . .

Suggestions for Powerbook 1400 internal batteries

2003-11-11 Thread Ruffin Bailey
Saw that the Powerbook Guy has 'em for $16, which sounds like an decent price, but
thought I'd ask the list before shelling out. *Almost* looks like I could run down to
Radio Shack and buy two plain jane (rechargable) batteries and use the tape and wires
from the one I removed to make a new one, but figured at the price of an oil change, I
might as well buy the "new" ones from the 'Guy.

Thanks,

Ruffin Bailey

Hello J Sand:

At this time, I know that this rebuild will work on any battery pack
with NiMH battery cells. The 5300 has NiMH cells. So far, I am not
sure of whether I can find the proper lithium cells, so PowerBooks
_after_ the 5300 & 190 are _so far_ out of my range.

Does this battery rebuild work on 5300 also?

Hello Howard, Nathan and (possibly) others:

I have been doing this (rebuilding and replacing the cells) for my own
PB 5X0s and Duos for the last several months and have learned a few things.

I would like to try rebuilding your batteries for you, but I before you
reply to this (off list, please), there are a couple of things you
should try to _truly_ recondition your batteries.

1. Get the battery utilities Battery Amnesia 1.5.2 by Jeremy Kezer (
<http://www.kezer.net/shareware.html> ) and EMMpathy 2.0 or 2.1 by VST
and Intelligent Battery Recondition (IBR) (for Intelligent batteries, PB
5X0s) by Apple. If you can't find any of these let me know and I will
send them to you.

2. Start up the PB on your AC power supply and start up IBR _without_
the battery inserted. Then insert your battery. If IBR doesn't like
your battery, shut it down, take your battery out and restart IBR. Do
this up to 10 times and allow the program to charge your battery each
time. You should be able to get enough charge during this process to
allow the battery memory to be read. Then let the program continue
processing your battery. You can also use a stock battery charger of
about 9V and 150 millamps or more up to 1 amp to manually charge the
battery (You will need to devise an attachment method, but I can help
you on that). Once you have the battery charged, you need to drain the
battery using Battery Amnesia and fully charge it back up about 5 times
or until you see no further improvement in battery life.

If the above works, it will need to be repeated about once a month
(about 2-3 charge and discharge cycles) to keep the batteries at full capacity.

However, even if this does work, (so far, about 50% of the time for me)
old batteries will _usually_, not always, lose from 5 to 50% of their
charge each day regardless of whether they are in the PowerBook or not.
A recelled battery will lose about 3-15% _per week_.

Please let me know what you would like to do.

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant
