When I investigated further I found that there's a small permanent
magnet under the speaker grille in the lower half of the case - this
activates the reed switch when the screen is folded shut, putting the
Powerbook to sleep.

Well, the similar switch on the Wallstreet puts the machine to
sleep when you close the "lid."

Resetting the PRAM was the solution. The Control Panel you're thinking
of is Universal Access, but it's not present. The result is that both
LCDs are fine, but the cs motherboard has some sort of problem which
prevents it operating the screen correctly.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

Fixable? Yes. But it may be more cost efficient to get another 166mhz
laptop/motherboard from Ebay or the Swap List...

The ribbon HD cable connects the HD to the mobo on the left side of the HD.
It is tucked in under the plastic border of the bay. When you pull the HD up,
on the left you'll see the orange ribbon. Try to CAREFULLY work the ribbon
downward, out from the plastic it is tucked into. After that, carefully remove the
connector from the HDs pins.

While you're at it, you might as well go on a fool's errand(!) and check to
see if the 117mhz unit's mobo can in fact handle a 166mhz processor. Some
117/133mhz mobos were alledged to be able to...

Looking under the heatsink, in the RAM/processor bay, look at the two chips
on the mobo between the processor connectors, and the RAM connectors. If the
chips have "203 LOW" and "X204 HIGH" then it cannot handle a 166mhz
processor.

But if the numbers above are in the 300's instead of the 200's, then you can
use the 166mhz processor with the C's motherboard.

Re: Best of two PB1400s

2004-09-12 Thread Andrew Noakes
Ha! PRAM reset was what I wasn't doing. If I do Command-Option-P-R
after swapping screens I can now get the 1400c base (known to be
good) working with the 1400cs screen (previously believed dead). I'm
using it now - and just for the record, for my money the Active
Matrix 1400c screen is much better, with more consistent colours and
faster response (less ghosting) than the 1400cs Passive Matrix screen.

I've refitted the 1400c screen (known to work) to the 1400cs base
(still with me?) and done a PRAM reset, but as before I get just a
faint image with no backlight. In fact, the backlight appears to
light in the top right corner during startup, then goes out. No
amount of brightness, contrast or monitor control panel setting
changes make it any better.

As both LCDs work with the 1400c, that suggests the problem with my
dead 1400cs is not the screen but somewhere on the motherboard.
Anyone know if this is fixable?

If not I'll swap the memory board and (bigger) hard drive to the
working 1400c. I tried to remove the hard drive earlier, but after
taking out the two obvious screws it still doesn't want to come out.
Is there anything else I need to undo first?

Thanks for all your very helpful suggestions thus far, and in advance
for any further pearls of wisdom!

Okay, I took logic at one time in my 7+ years(!) of undergrad...

All of the above tells me, barring some control adjustments/PRAM resets, that
something is likely wrong with the cs's mobo..

Joining this discussion late, but if you decide to switch the internals,
remember that the 117's mobo is different from the 166's mobo. The 1400c's mobo
cannot use the 166mhz processor.

Anyway, I just finished switching out a 1400c and a cs's mobo & screen. My
1400c/400 had a 166mhz mobo, and I needed it to use with a 166mhz processor for
a 1400cs/166 I built for a relative. So I gutted my 1400c/400 and removed the
screen, installed all of it on a spare 117/133 mobo, then built a 1400cs/166
on the removed 166 mobo. (If you can follow all of that...)

Did you try zapping the PRAM or setting the monitor settings? When I swtiched
the c screen (& guts) on the old 1400cs mobo I had, I did notice that the
colors were set to 256; perhaps adjusting the settings will help?

From my one try at breaking one down, I'd say it's pretty easy to swap the
screens. Just be careful with the two plugs that go into the sockets on the
motherboard. There's not much room to get your fingers down there to push
'em in, and on the one I tried it on, they're pretty brittle and easy to
break.

Make sure you have the cable heads planted correctly in the sockets.
The screens are 100% interchangable, so it shouldnt be a screen
problem.

It could be that the original screen was fine, but the motherboard
had the problem.

I've pulled the dead screen from the 1400cs, with the intention of

Just out of interest I opened up the case of that dead screen and

(behind the edge of the case, just about where the Apple logo is)
and it's broken - literally snapped in two. Can anyone tell me what
this reed switch does and whether this could be what's stopping the
display from working? When the machine starts up the display gives a
little flicker but then stays dark.
That might be the sleep sensor. When triggered, it should put the
computer to sleep.

I have a working PB1400c/117 and a PB1400cs/166 with a dead screen.
Would it be easier to swap the working screen onto the 166 machine,
or install the 166 internals into the 1400c? Or is neither really
worth the aggro?

Swapping the screen is much less work.
