Can anyone give me some other possible causes for this symptom?

Okay, based on my Lombard experience, reset the PMU. It's done by
holding the little button between the telephone and VGA connectors
down for about ten seconds and releasing it. Then, plug 'er back in
and try again.

Re: Pismo

2006-01-22 Thread Caleb Cupples
The fastest Pismo upgrade I've heard of is a G3/800, but I'd go with a
G4/500 over any G3, because of OS X being optimized for the Altivec
instruction set of the G4. However, in my humble opinion, the G3/500 in
the Pismo is pretty good, even after working with various G4 machines
and even a G5 or two.

There are a handful of G4/550 upgrades. Daystar/XLR8 make one.

Otherwise, the fastest CLOCK SPEED CPU you'll get is a G3 from
PowerLogix. They made 900 MHz and 1.0 GHz G3 upgrades, but as far as
I can tell, they've been discontinued. PL support for discontinued
products sucks, and their website is a nightmare.

Google found this:

Shouldn't this thread be on G-Books instead of PowerBooks?

Re: Pismo problem

2005-10-12 Thread Peter Phun
Wanda,
I'm assuming you didn't drop it or anything of that sort.
So I'm going to assume you're also changing one piece of hardware at a time
and noting meticulously which went in and didn't boot up the Pismo.

Assuming also you didn't mess with the RAM (hard not to with the Pismo since
removing the processor card requires removal of the top slots of RAM) I would
guess
it may be something not seated properly like when you put everything back
and didn't push down hard enough on the processor card to make a good
connection with the motherboard.

I've been inside my Pismo a lot and the few times it didn't boot, it was
something
like that. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious sometimes when 'panic' sets in,
you just don't think straight.

Take a break and start over. Change one component at a time.

You pushed hard enough on the processor to seat it properly? You have
to push hard enough to make it feel like you're going to crack
something.

Also check the pins on the processor card carefully, if you've got
one bent over you've got problems.

(Re-post: It looks like my email got lost somewhere in the ether the

Of course, this is topic is so completely off-topic for this list...
Having said that, let me contribute to the collective delinquency! ;-)

I own three Wallstreets (a 292, a 233 series II, and a 266). None of
them glowed out of the box (not in the same way as a Pismo, anyway,
which can be seen in a normally lit room in the daytime). A
Wallstreet might faintly glow if you view it from the rear in a
completely black environment, but that's only by accident. That's
because the foam and mylar sheet between the backlight and the logo
aren't 100% opaque (they're close to it though, maybe 95%).

On one of my Wallstreets, the only modification necessary to make the
logo glow was simply the removal of a mylar sticker from the backside
of the logo. On the other, I needed to remove the sticker and trim
back some of the foam spacer to allow the light through. I haven't
bothered to make the third glow.

In very bright direct sunlight with the LCD at lower backlight
brightnesses, sometimes there will be a yellowish blotch in the
center of the LCD where the sunlight shines through the logo more
brightly than the backlight lights the LCD.

Setting up some LEDs around the logo is a simple thing to do. I've
investigated the possibility of moving the sleep LED to the logo (or
adding a 2nd LED in addition to the primary LED) There's plenty of
space between the plastic of the lid and the backlight. Some of the
foam may have to be trimmed back on individual models, however.

Mad Dog, does this answer some of your questions?

I think that that would be a little dangerous, and, anyways, why would you
want to do that? I'd think that mounting a small LED array around the logo
with the spacing so that it would diffuse properly and a mirrored backing to
keep from affecting the LCD backlight would be the best solution, if you
could wire it properly. Unfortunately, this is just speculation. If you do
try it and get it to work, let me know.

I don't think you even need to fiddle with LEDs, just let the light

Just my 2c worth.

The Apple logo on the G3 was designed to show the logo so that it could
be correctly seen as being correct when the lid was closed. On the G4,
it was reversed so that others could see that, when in use, you were
using a Mac.

willingness to work with plastic.
Draw a perfect square around the logo. Cut it out. Flip it 180
degrees and use an MEK based or other appropriate solvent glue to
weld it back together.
Then fine sandpaper to finish. Some case modders use bead blasting
to match pebble grain finishes.

Too much work?
Then make up some good lines to *crew with peoples heads.
Like Woz gave it to me that way. It's a one-off ! or go take a
@$$*$%# ! .

Or just smile knowingly.

Just close the PB and say it's not upside down ;-)

I have my G4 Al siting on a stand on my desk attached to a big
monitor. I keep the PB closed using just the external video and the
logo on mine is upside-down so yours is correct.

Just my 2c worth.

The Apple logo on the G3 was designed to show the logo so that it could
be correctly seen as being correct when the lid was closed. On the G4,
it was reversed so that others could see that, when in use, you were
using a Mac.

Note that the inversion of the logo was more or less at the same time
as the logo backlighting. Which makes sense, if you are going to
light it, it should be right side up when lit.

Rumor has it that some TV show or movie rigged a Mac to illuminate
the backlight and when someone at Apple saw it they decided it would
be a good idea to do it for all of them.

PowerBook G3s glow. Not very brightly, but they definitely glow.

Also, clamshell iBooks were supposed to glow. They decided right before
production to make them not. The fix was a metallic sticker placed over the
apple cutout inside the display where the LCD backlight was supposed to
shine through.. You can make your Tangerine/Indigo/Lime/Graphite iBook glow
by opening your display (yikes! like 12 screws!) and removing this silly
sticker. Worked perfectly on mine.

Glowing is not enough,
Spinning and perhaps blinking,
Now these are important considerations.

Chain driven so as to always be right side up.
Spinning at optimal RPM. And blinking. Now that will draw much more attention
than simply being upside down.

It is oh, SO important !

Take your Wallstreet, with LCD at full brightness, into a completely dark,
windowless bathroom or closet or something. You'll see that it does in fact
glow, if I remember correctly. I had a Wallstreet and I'm pretty sure it
glowed, just nowhere near as brightly as G4s do. In fact, I remember
thinking gee wiz this thing is pretty dim

The spinning and blinking thing is old now.

I didn't say you'd want to do it, just that you could.

I don't think you even need to fiddle with LEDs, just let the light
from the backlight through.

Re: Pismo...upside down logo

2005-05-28 Thread Dan K
Anyone see this thread as a tad silly . . . errr, no? Hmmm . . .
right then . . .

I think cutting out the old logo, the new hole being a larger 'upside
down' . . . err, right-side-up logo is the cleanest solution. As for the
'insert' to use in the new larger hole - I've checked all the 'Book
display-back Apple logos from clamshell iBook to 17 AlBook and none are
large enough to cover a WS/Lombard/Pismo's old Apple logo's outline.
Everything I have from dual USB iBook and first gen TiBook up to the revs
A/B 12 and 17 AlBooks are identically sized, but the clamshell's Apple
is the largest of all by a small margin.

Therefore, unless there's some 'Book I've overlooked, one would likely
need to fabricate a new larger Apple insert for that factory look some of
y'all seem to crave.

How about using the Apple logo inserts from the side of a B+W form-factor
desktop? Now there's a statement! Sadly, color choices are limited to
blue and a couple shades of gray. Hmm, I don't have any recent Apple
desktop displays, are any of those logos appropriate?

Just had another (silly) thought or two . . . if one cut out the old
Apple's surround as a circle, one could fab some sort of
spinning/rotating thinga-ma-bob where one could turn the Apple anytime to
any orientation one desired. Now how's that for a complete solution?!?!
G Oo, oo, how about having it motorized somehow, so that it
turns 180 degrees when you open the lid!?!!? And back again when you shut
it?!?!?! Or even just constantly whirls when ever you have the lid
open?!?!? Alright, nobody steal that idea, that's a winner that one is!!
G

See, this _is_ a silly thread, I've just ensured its silliness!

Uh. . . . this will require a razor saw from the hobby shop or a
Dremel tool with saw blade . Patience, a steady hand and a
willingness to work with plastic.

I have my G4 Al siting on a stand on my desk attached to a big
monitor. I keep the PB closed using just the external video and the
logo on mine is upside-down so yours is correct.

...anybody got a good solution for the upside down logo on my Pismo?
 Yesterday,
for about the 9,000th time, somebody--a total stranger, sitting at least
 20 feet
away--walked over and asked me, Why is the Apple upside down? I tire of
explanation, and would love a workable solution, short of purchasing a new
Powerbook or a bullet through the screen. I thought about putting one of
 the
old Apple rainbow logos on a Post-It note and sticking it on the back of
 the
 screen, everytime.

Simple, lower the lid, note that the Apple is right side up, give
them a funny look and go back to what you were doing.

the logo is right-side-up again.

Re: Pismo...upside down logo

2005-05-27 Thread Jennifer Worgan
place Pismo logo side down on a good color copier
copy
cut out the logo with enough background color to cove the original logo
treat the surface with spray acylic or laminate
glue over top of old logo in any direction you want it

alternative
glue the botton of a snap on top of original logo
glue a hammered thin piece of lead or solder wire to the back of the bottom
edge of the new logo
glue to of snap to the new logo copy made above
lubricate top of snap with something like WD-40
snap on to top
for protection from rub against other objects - glue a clear plastic or
glass dome such as the glass/plastic on analog watches (from a cheap watch)
over the logo/snap apparatus.

if the snap is lubricated adequately and free moving, the weight (hammered
thin piece of lead or solder wire) should be pulled by gravity downward
keeping the logo upright with regards to the ground when opened

a lightweight spring could be added underneath the logo to return it
original (or desired) position when flat

cost::
snap, glue, sping, cheap watch, color copy - under $10

the envy of other Pismo owners with logos that appear upside down when open
? ...but probably not price less

I also don't see why it's such a big deal about the Apple logo being upside

When replacing the internal hard drive, you should be sure to obtain an

Yes, faster drives will work on slower interfaces. Slower drives will
work on faster interfaces, but will slow the bus down to their speed,
iirc. The only limitation is the physical height of the drive, (needs
to be = 11 mm, iirc. perhaps 9mm)

Re: Pismo HD question

2003-11-24 Thread DPrice
I am considering buying the following drive from Googlegear.com
because of positive reports on it that I have seen here. I am just
making sure this is close to the one reported, if not the same. It is
a bare drive. How problematic is that? This is the first laptop drive
I have purchased so my knowledge is clearly limited:
IBM Hitachi Travelstar 40GNX 20GB ATA-5 2.5in 5400 rpm mobile drive

Thanks a lot.
I had one that I installed into a Lombard and it worked out fine.
It's a little noisier than the 4200rpm, not much, but I think I'm
also more sensitive to that sort of thing. My wife's Pismo is
blissfully silent with the slower drive. btw, this is a better
question for the G-books list.

Re: Pismo Problems

2003-10-03 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Drew, IIRC you may want to check the extension which loaded right after
the Apple Audio Extension (or maybe the one right before). On my Pismo,
sometimes it's not been the extension whose icon you see last, but the
one that was in process of loading that caused the problem (or else, the
extension right before AAE, and it conflicted with AAE).
HTH,

Jim
It seems to have been AAE. Disabling it seems to have stopped those
particular errors. Curiously, the problem (with the same OS) doesn't
occur on my Wallstreet.

As for my other problems, I think I've nailed it down to a faulty
512MB RAM module. I'll be contacting OWC later to see what can be
worked out - it is supposed to have a lifetime warranty...

Peace,
Drew

Do you have File Exchange enabled? Since the card is probably PC
formatted, that would be necessary, I think.

Hi,

Just upgraded my Pismo PB to 9.2.2 and I can't seem to mount my CompactFlash
Card on the desktop. FYI, I did a clean install of 9.1, then upgraded to
9.2.1 and ran the 9.2.2 update. Do I need the original CD/Operating System?

Or what should I look for?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Thomas

I found with my 5300c and a SmartMedia adapter that I had to put the
SmartMedia card into the adapter and then insert the adapter into the
5300. If I put the adapter in first it didn't see the SM card nor
the adapter and in fact I had to shutdown and eject manually.

With CF I always inserted the CF into the adapter first so I don't
know if it works the other way or not.
